The Edge of Night Synopses: 1971

JANUARY - AUGUST 1971:

Despite protests of innocence, Dr. Jim Fields remained the prime suspect in the murder of his former girlfriend Rosella Gray. Jim professed his innocence, arguing he had not given Rosella a key to his apartment. However, based on an anonymous tip, the police obtained a search warrant for Jim's apartment and uncovered a housekey and note signed "R." Jim was soon indicted for Rosella's murder. Despite the evidence against her fiance, Liz vowed to stand by Jim. Adam agreed to defend to Jim, and recalling Dr. Charles Weldon's threats, began to suspect Charles was the real killer.

Jonah Lockwood convinced Laurie to move out of her parents home and in to an apartment with Jonah's friend Tango. Nancy was concerned about Laurie's safety, as the apartment was located in a seedy section of town. Behind Laurie's back, Jonah tried to make time with the free-spirited Tango, who enjoyed dabbling in the counterculture drug scene.

Across town, Nancy's sister Cookie suffered romantic troubles of her own. Diagnosed with melancholia, Cookie's condition worsened. Noting that Tiffany Whitney's roving eyes seemed to look in Ron's direction, Cookie became obssessed with the idea Tiffany and Ron were having an affair. At first, Cookie's fears were completely irrational. But after many months of Cookie's jealous, neurotic nagging and neglect, Ron finally did succumb to an affair with Tiffany, herself bored with being the wife of a preoccupied politician. Geraldine, learning about the affair, discredited Cookie's accusations by goading her into mental instability. When Cookie ultimately displayed violent and aggressive behavior toward the pair, Ron committed her to Greenhaven Sanitarium. Meanwhile, Colin discovered the affair between his wife and his PR man, too. Colin managed to set aside his anger, realizing the negative publicity would ruin his career.

With her parents in Europe, Mike in Capitol City, and Laurie in an apartment of her own, Nancy grew bored and restless. She decided to fly to the island of St. Elenora, which seemed to be the source of trouble for so many people. There, she investigated Keith's former fiance Suella Duval. On the island, Nancy learned Suella had drowned in a boating accident. However, Suella's grandmother insisted to Nancy that Suella had been a very strong swimmer, and her death seemed extremely suspicious. Meanwhile, Nancy was secretly being followed by someone. First, the stalker placed a poisonous scorpion in Nancy's bed, with the intent of scaring her away. Nancy was bitten, but the species of scorpion wasn't deadly, so Nancy wasn't seriously harmed. Next, the stalker spiked Nancy's drink with poison. This too failed when she was discovered and had her stomach pumped in time. Nancy returned to Monticello, this time asking Adam for help with the case.

Along with Nicole and Professor Neil Davenport (Colin Whitney's campaign manager), Adam flew back to St. Elenora. There he learned that Keith Whitney had secretly married Suella before her death. Doing his own investigating, Professor Davenport managed to locate Suella's former home. He went there and was astonished to find a Monticello newspaper dated the same day as Keith Whitney's death. Before Davenport could take the evidence to Adam, he was bludgeoned to death by an unseen assailant. Davenport's car was later found at the bottom of a ravine, leading authorities to believe he had died in a freak car accident.

Back in Monticello, Bill and Martha Marceau decided to purchase a new home in Graham County. Kate Sloane, a nurse at Monticello General and the house's former occupant, warned the Marceau's that the house was haunted. They didn't heed her wild tales and moved in anyway. However, it soon became apparent that Kate Sloane's stories might be true. At night, Martha heard footsteps, sounds of laughter, and even saw blood dripping from the walls. Normally level-headed and rational, Martha told Bill that the paranormal experiences convinced her that Kate was telling the truth. Suspicious, Bill decided to investigate the background of their home. He was surprised to discover that Kate's late husband was Frank Sloane, a thief who had supposedly drowned a year earlier, after falling into the Monticello River during a shootout with several of Bill's own officers. The Sloane house had been placed on the market, as Kate couldn't pay the back taxes.

Secrets were also floating around the Whitney Mansion. Adam Drake continued to suspect Geraldine's mysterious brother Dr. Charles Weldon was responsible for the deaths of Suella Duval, Rosella Gray, and Professor Neil Davenport. Indeed, Geraldine often spent time in the company of Charles, whispering and planning secret meetings. However, the case suddenly took a new turn when Charles' body was discovered at the base of a tower on the family's summer estate. When Geraldine hired Adam to replace Charles as her trust fund manager, Adam discovered Charles had embezzled over a million dollars from the account. This prompted the police to rule Charles' death as a suicide. Satisfied with the ruling, Adam decided the only way to prove Jim's innocence would be to find the key-maker who duplicated Jim's house-key for Rosella. Meanwhile, an intruder broke into the Whitney mansion. Shortly afterward, Geraldine received an anonymous call from someone who claimed to possess a manuscript written by Charles, which contained all of the Whitney family's dirty secrets. Geraldine secretly agreed to meet the blackmailer in the park to exchange money. At the park, Geraldine accidentally came face-to-face with the blackmailer and was shocked to discover it was her "late" son Keith, who now disguised himself as a bearded hippie named Jonah Lockwood! Keith's death had been staged by Geraldine and Charles to cover up a dirty family secret: Keith had been in the boat the day his fiance Suella Duval drowned. Fearing Suella's scandalous death would ruin Colin's Senate nomination, Geraldine devised and executed Keith's "death" then paid him to go into hiding in Mexico. Geraldine begged Keith to return to Mexico, and he agreed, but Keith really didn't want to leave without his true love...Laurie Karr.

By June, Mike Karr returned from Capitol City and was disheartened to learn about Laurie's growing relationship with Jonah. Mike felt that Jonah, Laurie's roommate Tango, and Tango's pot-smoking boyfriend Max were all a negative influence on his daughter. Meanwhile, Tango continued to carry on with Jonah. One day while Jonah was out, Tango let herself in to his apartment. She happened to discover a briefcase that contained a photo of Keith Whitney. Bored, Tango penciled in a beard and moustache on the picture, and she was shocked to realize that Jonah Lockwood and the late Keith Whitney were one and the same. Stupidly, Tango confronted Keith the evidence, demanding payoff money. Keith went to Uncle Charles, whom Keith knew had embezzled over two million dollars from Geraldine's trust fund account. At first Charles agreed to help Keith, but after accidentally learning that Keith had murdered Suella Duval and Neil Davenport, Charles refused to help and threatened to expose Keith. Keith lured Charles to Hawley Farms, the family's summer retreat. Meeting in the turret of a high tower, Keith pushed Charles to his death and skillfully arranged the murder to look like suicide. When Adam discovered Charles' embezzlement from the Whitney's, everyone seemed satisfied that Charles had murdered Suella Duval and Neil Davenport, then committed suicide as he was about to be exposed as a murderer and thief. Meanwhile, Keith planned to get rid of Tango, too. After inviting Tango and Max to a college pot-and-pill party, Keith tipped off the police, who arrested Tango and Max for drug possession.

At Greenhaven Sanitarium, Cookie Christopher made progress by realizing that perhaps Ron hadn't been unfaithful after all. One day while visiting, Ron spoke with Cookie's psychiatrist Dr. Kevin Reed. Unaware that a tape recorder had been activated, Ron confessed his affair with Tiffany Whitney to Dr. Reed. Later, Cookie accidentally heard the tape and went insane with anger. Finding a pocket knife in Ron's jacket, an enraged Cookie attempted to stab him. Afterward, Cookie exhibited the behavior of a small child, insisting that Mike and Nancy were her loving "parents" who would take care of her and protect her from evil people like Ron and Tiffany.

AUGUST 19, 1971 (EPISODE# 3,999)
Jonah told Laurie about Max and Tango's arrest. Following her release from jail, and enraged Tango confronted Laurie and Jonah. Tango made sarcastic comments about how convenient it was that Laurie and Jonah left the party right before the police arrived. Later, Tango insinuated that Laurie and Jonah left to have sex. Laurie volleyed Tango's accusations with a hard slap across the face. Adam informed Nicole that Gordon Whitney doesn't want anyone to know about Charles Weldon's two million dollar embezzlement of Geraldine's trust fund. Adam theorized that Charles accidentally murdered Rosella Gray while attempting to silence Jim. Vic showed Adam and Nicole his hand, which has healed nicely after punching Jonah. Adam told Vic that he doesn't deserve Laurie, which goaded Vic into calling her. Laurie agreed to meet Vic for lunch at The Raven. After Laurie left the apartment, Tango confronted Jonah with her suspicion that Jonah had tipped off the cops about the pot party. Jonah proclaimed innocence, but Tango didn't beleive him. Tango demanded $5000, otherwise she'll tell the world that Jonah is really Keith Whitney. Jonah secretly drugged Tango's coffee.

AUGUST 20, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,000)
Martha informed Nancy that Lt. Anderson caught Kate Sloane sneaking into the Marceau home with a jar of whole blood, stolen from Monticello General. Nancy was preoccupied with thoughts of Laurie, and told Martha that she hates Tango. Martha convinced Nancy that it would be a parent's perogotive to get rid of Tango. Nancy decided to issue Laurie an ultimatum: make Tango move or out or lose Mike and Nancy's financial support. At lunch, Vic revealed to a stunned Laurie that Tango had called him with a message to Laurie at an unkown apartment, which turned out to be Jonah's. Laurie realized Tango had set up Vic up to fight with Jonah. Furious, Laurie vowed to give Tango more than a slap in the face. Nancy arrived at Laurie and Tango's apartment, just as Jonah pushed a drugged Tango to her death out of a window.

AUGUST 23, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,001)
After pushing Tango out the fifth floor window, Jonah closed the window and failed to notice one of Tango's shoes had fallen off. Nancy grilled Jonah about his and Laurie's intentions. Jonah assured Nancy he's against drug use, and he respects Laurie. Before Nancy could spot the picture of Keith that Tango had penciled a beard and moustache on, Jonah destroyed the photo. In Washington, Tiffany gave Colin a photo album containing pictures of Keith. Tiffany noticed that weren't any pictures of Keith and Colin together before age ten. Colin recalled how insanely jealous Keith was of him, and remarked that Geraldine and Gordon gave everything he wanted...except for a brilliant political career. Tiffany wondered about Keith's sanity. Colin recalled Keith's affinity for cruelty and torture of animals. Colin and Tiffany realized that it's been exactly a year since Keith's "death" and decided to hold a memorial service in Monticello. Lt. Anderson told Adam and Nicole that Mr. Schreiber, the blind keymaker, positively identified the perfume Rosella wore the day she had Jim's apartment key duplicated. Another customer--Lucille Meeker-- identified Rosella's photograph, and recalled that Rosella had been in the key shop. Anderson admitted he believes in Jim's innocence. At Laurie's apartment, Nancy pressed Jonah about whether or not he and Laurie are engaged, then Nancy found Tango's shoe.

AUGUST 24, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,002)
Jonah worried about the shoe Nancy found, then realized that he'd stupidly closed the window after pushing Tango out of it. Jonah lied to Nancy that he'd convince Laurie to move back home. Laurie asked for Vic's help in convincing Mike and Nancy that Jonah really isn't bad. Adam and Nicole joined Vic and Laurie for lunch and urged Laurie not to rush into marriage when she graduates college at the end of the semester. Later, at home, Laurie found Tango's shoe and screamed when she spotted Tango's corpse in the alley below.

AUGUST 25, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,003)
Bill and Lt. Anderson questioned Laurie about Tango's involvement in the drug scene. Bill learned that Jonah was the last person to see Tango alive. Mike and Nancy arrived to comfort Laurie. Nancy told the police that she arrived at 1pm, and Tango was already gone. Bill discovered that the shoe on Laurie's bureau matched the one on Tango's body. Vic remarked to Adam and Nicole that Laurie is sometimes afraid of Jonah. Later, Mike called Adam with news of Tango's death. Lt. Anderson interrogated Jonah, who said Tango had left the apartment to buy LSD, and the last time her saw her, she looked like she had gotten it. Jonah lied that Tango had a "flying fantasy" in which she dreamed about having wings. After learning that Lt. Anderson questioned Nancy, Jonah worried about what Nancy said.

AUGUST 26, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,004)
Bill learned that Tango's real name was Gloria Humphries and located her parents in Seattle. Bill was astonished that Tango's parents had no remorse for their daughter's death. Mike asked Bill if the police suspect foul play or Jonah's involvement in Tango's death, but Bill stated that it's too early to tell. Geraldine refused to attend Colin and Tiffany's memorial service for Keith, claiming it was too soon after Charles' death. Colin told Geraldine that before his death, Keith insinuated that Uncle Charles embezzled Geraldine's money. Geraldine denied Colin's remarks. The autopsy report on Tango revealed that she was high on a hallucinogen when she flew out the window.

AUGUST 27, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,005)
Nancy helped Laurie pack when she decided to move home temporarily. Nancy wanted to know if Jonah had a part in Laurie's decision, then asked point blank if she and Jonah are engaged. Laurie admitted that she and Jonah are engaged, though not formally. Geraldine called Jonah and begged him to return to Mexico. Jonah told a shocked Geraldine that it's time Keith Whitney came back to life. At Keith's "grave" Gordon, Colin, and Tiffany discussed Keith. Gordon admitted that he considered Keith to be quite mad. Nancy went to Jonah's apartment, asking him not to influence Laurie into moving out again. Jonah laced a glass of sherry with LSD and served it to Nancy.

Note: According to the inscription on Keith's tombstone, Keith was born in January 1945.

AUGUST 30, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,006)
On the way home from Keith's memorial service, Gordon told Colin and Tiffany that he had wanted Keith to consult with a psychiatrist, but Geraldine refused. Gordon shocked Colin and Tiffany by revealing that as a child, Keith tried to smother a little girl who caught him stealing. Gordon remarked that it's hard to love a child whom you also fear. Laurie stopped by Jonah's apartment just as Nancy was about to take a sip of the drug-laced brandy. In front of Nancy, Jonah told Laurie that going might be good for her and stated that he's decided to return to Atlanta himself. After Nancy left, Jonah giggled to Laurie that he didn't mean anything he said... it was all an act for Nancy's benefit. Jonah remarked to Laurie that Nancy is as shrewd and calculating as his own mother. Laurie picked up Nancy's glass of sherry and was about to drink it, when Jonah batted it out of her hand.

AUGUST 31, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,007)
Adam told a delighted Jim and Liz that Lt. Anderson no longers believes Jim murdered Rosella Gray. Certain that Jonah knows who sold Tango LSD, Lt. Anderson got permission from Bill to question Jonah. Martha informed Bill that they received a note from Kate Sloane, who's spending thirty in days in jail for petty larceny. Bill feared that Kate would do worse than stealing blood, when she gets out. DA Quinn dropped the murder charges against Jim. At Jonah's apartment, Lt. Anderson threatened Jonah, who countered that his father-in-law Mike Karr would get Anderson fired. Jonah laughed when Anderson asked if Mike Karr knows what kind of man he's getting for a son-in-law.

NOTE: This script called for announcer Harry Kramer to read a special announcement over the closing credits: "We of The Edge of Night offer our congratulations to Search for Tomorrow, this week celebrating it 20th year on the air."

SEPTEMBER 1, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,008)
Liz, Jim, Adam, and Nicole broke Jim's good news to Mike. Liz suggested to Jim that they set a wedding date. Nancy stopped by Laurie's apartment to help her move and told Laurie and an angry Jonah that the murder charges against Jim were dropped. Jonah told Laurie that he was going to miss her, then he gave her a long, passionate kiss. Jonah smiled smirkily to Nancy, over Laurie's shoulder.

SEPTEMBER 2, 1971 (EPISODE #4,009)
Dr. Kevin Reed and Dr. Stephen Warner argued about Cookie's case. Reed stated that Cookie is psychotic and sees Mike and Nancy as her parental figures. Warner countered that Cookie appears rational and ready to be placed under minimum supervision. Dr. Reed told Ron that a tape recorder was activated the day they discussed Ron's affair with Tiffany Whitney. Reed confessed that Cookie accidentally heard the tape and now hates Ron. Reed commented that Cookie's is hatred is good because it forces her to face reality. Colin was elated that an anti-poverty bill he sponsored passed the Senate, but things turned grim with talk of what Keith might have accomplished had he lived. Geraldine became furious when Colin and Gordon discussed Keith sadistic nature. Colin told the family a story about Keith locking him in the tower room at the family's summer home. Colin said that Keith wanted him to die so that Keith would be the next in line for a political career. At Greenhaven Sanitarium, Ron confronted Cookie who told him that they'd never be together again. Cookie insisted that Mike and Nancy are her parents now and that they'd take care of her. Ron informed Cookie that she can't stay with the Karr's since Laurie has moved back home. Dr. Warner received a letter from Geraldine, urging him to call her. On the phone, Geraldine hinted to Warner that her very generous donation to the clinic might be revoked unless Cookie is discharged from the hospital. Later, Warner told Cookie that she could go home.

SEPTEMBER 3, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,010)
Laurie celebrated her 21st birthday with Liz, Adam, Nicole, and Winston. At the birthday party, Jim and Liz announced Jim's freedom and their upcoming wedding. Jonah overheard a radio news broadcast about Jim's release, and kicked himself for not killing Jim when he had the chance. Jonah realized that he couldn't attend Laurie's birthday party and risk being recognized by Jim. Geraldine and Gordon quarreled about Keith and Gordon's insistence that Keith was insane. Geraldine slipped by stating that she's sick of hearing that Keith is a madman. Gordon noted that Geraldine spoke of Keith in the present tense. Gordon commented that Keith had a death wish, but not for himself...he enjoyed killing other things. A stunned Geraldine was horrified by Gordon's statement until she realized that he was talking about killing animals. Geraldine begged Gordon not say another bad thing about Keith because their son is really alive!

Note: Due to the Labor Day holiday, this episode was pre-taped on September 1, 1971.

SEPTEMBER 6, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,011)
Geraldine called Keith and put an astonished Gordon on the line. Both were stunned to hear each others' voice. Keith apologized to Gordon for everything that happened, but he insisted it was for the good of the family and Colin's senate nomination. Geraldine explained to Gordon that she and Charles faked Keith's death in the car crash because of Keith's marriage to Suella Duval, who committed suicide rather divorce Keith. Geraldine admitted that she was afraid the scandal would have ruined Colin's political career. Tiffany and Colin discussed Keith and wondered what kind of monster he'd be if he were still alive. Cookie vanished from Greenhaven Sanitarium.

Note: Due to the Labor Day holiday, this episode was pre-taped on September 3, 1971.

SEPTEMBER 7, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,012)
Geraldine telephoned Nancy with news of Cookie's imminent release from Greenhaven. Dr. Kevin Reed was frantic when he learned about Cookie's disappearance. Ceila Burns told a stunned Dr. Reed that Cookie ran away from the sanitarium after learning she was soon to be discharged. A nurse verified Celia's story. Laurie lamented to Nancy that the birthday party would have been perfect with Jonah's attendance. Nancy worried Cookie's immediate release might not be a good thing and told Laurie she has more confidence in Dr. Reed's abilities than Dr. Warner's. Geraldine assured Gordon that she had to fake Keith's death in order to save Colin's campaign and the family's future. Gordon asked Geraldine if she's sure Keith didn't drown Suella the same way he once drowned a family kitten. Nancy was disturbed by Laurie's plans to marry Jonah, then got a bigger shock when Dr. Reed called with news of Cookie's disappearance.

Gordon: "If you told me you could pull a rabbit out of a hat, Geraldine, I'd believe you... But you did much more incredible trick, didn't you? You pulled a dead boy out of his grave."

SEPTEMBER 8, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,013)
Dr. Reed and Dr. Warner argued about Cookie, who apparently escaped via an open door in the sanitarium kitchen. Reed implied Cookie ran away because she viewed her early release as a rejection from Dr. Warner. Mike, Nancy, and Ron arrived at Greenhaven, outraged over Cookie's vanishing act. Liz and Jim stopped by Adam's office and told Adam, Nicole, and Vic that they're getting married tomorrow at 9am. Adam and Nicole agreed to be best man and bridesmaid. As a wedding gift, Adam canceled Jim's legal fees. Ron worried Cookie might be found dead, then learned from travel agent Phil Stevens that Cookie booked a morning flight to Paris. Nancy realized Cookie is running to Rose and Joe.

SEPTEMBER 9, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,014)
Nancy called her parents with news Cookie might be on her way overseas. Bill agreed not to notify the Paris police for at least 24 hours. When Lt. Anderson stopped by Bill's office with an evidence bag containing Tango's effects, Nancy recognized Tango's shoe as being a mate to the one she saw in Laurie's apartment the day Tango died. Released early from jail, Kate Sloane tried to convince Martha all the tricks to scare the Marceaus away were done for their own good. Martha refused to believe the house is actually haunted. Nancy insisted Jim and Liz marry at the Karr home instead of City Hall. Liz and Jim graciously accepted Nancy's offer. Bill caught Kate in the Marceau house and threatened to arrest her for trespassing. Kate collapsed, and upon awakening, began to speak about death in an eerie, otherworldy voice.

SEPTEMBER 10, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,015)
Laurie begged a reluctant Jonah to escort her to Liz and Jim's wedding. After accidentally referring to Jim as "Crazylegs," Jonah informed Laurie he's going back to Atlanta due to family problems. Laurie was upset at Jonah's implication he might not return to Monticello. Martha RSVP'd the Fields wedding since she has to baby-sit a sedated Kate Sloane. Jim and Liz were married by Judge Fine. After the wedding, Jonah and Laurie arrived at the Karr home. Alone, Nancy confronted Jonah about Tango's shoe and wanted to know how it was in the apartment if Tango was out buying LSD.

SEPTEMBER 13, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,016)
Jonah reacted violently to Nancy's questions about Tango's shoe, and accused Nancy of trying to railroad him into a murder rap. Nancy insisted she was only trying to understand how Tango's shoe could have been in the apartment if she was out, as Jonah claimed. Jonah threatened Nancy, promising he'll convince Laurie that Nancy is intentionally trying to break them up anyway she can. Nancy was shocked by Jonah's threats, but kept mum when Laurie and Mike entered the room. While Martha pitied Kate and Bill insisted she's insane, an "unconscious" Kate listened to every word the Marceaus said. Kate "awakened" after Bill left the room and told Martha someone is trying to possess her soul. Bill telephoned Mike and Nancy with news of Cookie's safe arrival in Paris. Jonah lied to Laurie that Nancy accused him murdering Tango and ordered him to not marry Laurie.

Jonah: "Some people will stop at nothing to get their way... and those people have to be... stopped ..."

SEPTEMBER 14, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,017)
Mike informed an unhappy Vic that Laurie considers herself engaged to Jonah. Nancy heard from her father Joe and learned Cookie is alive and well at their house in Paris. Bill congratulated Lt. Anderson on his "Pyrrhic victory." Now that Jim is cleared, they have no leads in the Rosella Gray case. Bill told Adam and Nicole about Kate Sloane's pranks, then confided to them he fears Martha might begin to believe the tales of hauntings and spirits. Kate told Martha the ghosts of a woman and her lover haunt the house. Later, Kate "sleepwalked" toward Martha's back, arms menacingly outstretched.

SEPTEMBER 15, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,018)
Kate attempted to strangle a terrified Martha, then snapped out of her "trance." Kate insisted she was possessed by the spirit of the woman who haunts the Marceau home. Adam agreed to help Bill convince Martha that Kate is faking the hauntings. Nancy questioned Bill about Tango's shoe, but he insisted the shoe Tango wore when she fell and the one Nancy saw in the apartment were different. Adam and Nicole visited Martha, who admitted she believed in ghosts as a child. Martha recalled her foster parent Aunt Margaret, an eccentric old woman who dragged young Martha to seances and convinced her the dead could return to life. Kate left the Marceau, warning Martha that she and Bill should do the same before it's too late.

SEPTEMBER 16, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,019)
Nancy called Dr. Warner with news about Cookie's safety. Warner informed Nancy there's no need for Cookie to return to Greenhaven, since she's already formally discharged. Dr. Reed reminded Warner that Cookie is only half-well and feared what might happen to her without additional psychiatric care. Dr. Warner suggested Reed will be first in line for a promotion when the hospital expands, but implied Reed had better keep quiet about Cookie. Reed was surprised to learn the hospital might expand, since cutbacks were previously planned. Later, Reed intercepted a call from Geraldine, whom he tricked into admitting she's paying for the hospital expansion. Geraldine told Gordon about Cookie, then commented she can drop the "keep-Mrs.-Karr-happy" campaign. Gordon disapproved of pretending to be friends with the Karrs just to keep them quiet. Geraldine stated she spent enough money to keep Nancy quiet for a long time. When Gordon insisted on seeing Keith, Geraldine said no, as she's sending Keith back to Mexico immediately. Later, Geraldine called Keith, who assured his mother he's leaving for Mexico as planned. Before Keith could leave, Laurie stopped by to see him off. Laurie resisted Keith's attempts to get physical, wanting only to talk about their future together. Keith was livid when Laurie mentioned Nancy dropped her off on the way to the police station. Fearing what Nancy told the police about Tango's shoe, Keith went to the Karr home where he found Nancy alone.

SEPTEMBER 17, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,020)
Keith, as Jonah, grilled Nancy about her meeting with Bill Marceau. Nancy insisted she only wanted to clear up the questions surrounding Tango's death... not to implicate Jonah. Keith became angry, then, gaining his composure, claimed that he went to the cellar to check on Laurie's laundry the day Tango died and that must have been when Tango returned to the apartment. Nancy discredited Keith's story, reminding him that the window was closed when she arrived; therefore, Tango couldn't have already fallen into the alley. Panicking, Keith drugged Nancy's sherry with knockout drops. Laurie stopped by Mike's office, just as Mike told Vic that Laurie and Jonah are officially engaged. An uncomfortable Vic made a hasty retreat. Mike offered to take Laurie and Nancy to the Coach House for a fancy dinner, since Nancy needs a distraction from worrying about Cookie. Just as Mike called home, Keith raised a poker above an unconscious Nancy's head, ready to bludgeon his victim to death. Keith couldn't bring himself to dispose of Laurie's mama in such a grisly manner. Keith dragged Nancy to the garage, and after binding her hands to the steering wheel with a length of rope, he turned on the car's ignition. As Mike called the Karr home again, Nancy lay in the garage, unconscious and dying from carbon monoxide poisoning.

SEPTEMBER 20, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,021)
At the Karr home, Jonah shaved off his beard and moustache, while Nancy lay dying in the exhaust-fume filled garage. Laurie wanted to drive home and pick up Nancy for dinner, but Mike insisted they call her again from the Coach House. Driving to dinner, Geraldine admitted to Gordon she was very sad about sending Keith away. When Gordon accused her of loving Keith more than she does Colin, Geraldine reminded him Keith always needed more love. At the Coach House, Mike tried unsuccessfully to contact Nancy. Laurie told Mike she fears Nancy would do anything to end her engagement to Jonah. After shaving off his beard and moustache, Keith declared it's time he "return from the dead." Geraldine commented to Gordon that Keith can re-appear in Monticello as soon as she's sure Nancy won't cause trouble for them by publicizing Suella's death. Gordon wondered if Geraldine was able to buy Nancy's silence by having Cookie released from Greenhaven. Geraldine instructed Dennis, the chauffeur, to drive them to the Karr home. Mike and Laurie began to worry when Nancy didn't answer the phone after an hour of calling. Arriving at the Karr home, Dennis told the Whitney's he heard a car running in the closed garage. Geraldine gave Dennis permission to break into the garage. Dennis dragged Nancy to safety, but he feared it was too late to save her life.

NOTE: The garage portions of this episode were pre-taped. On air, stage manager Howard Lenters could be heard saying, "More smoke, more smoke," to the special effects man.

SEPTEMBER 21, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,022)
Dennis performed artificial respiration on Nancy, who had stopped breathing. Gordon called for Dr. Wolfe and an ambulance. Mike grew uneasy after calling the Marceau's and learning they hadn't seen Nancy. Gordon speculated Nancy's "accident" might have been a suicide attempt, but Dennis informed them it was attempted murder-- he found Nancy's hands bound to the steering wheel. Gordon decided to call the police, but was interrupted by another call from Mike. A stunned Mike asked Gordon not to telephone the police immediately. Martha discounted Bill's theory that Kate wants the house back, since Kate couldn't afford the mortgage payments anyway. Bill suggested Martha is falling for Kate's tricks, reminding Martha she was influenced as a child by her Aunt Margaret's obsession with the occult. Mike called Bill about Nancy's attempted murder. At the Karr home, Dr. Wolfe assured an upset Mike and Laurie that Nancy will be just fine. When Bill arrived, everyone speculated a burglar might have attacked Nancy, since she could probably identify him. However, Nancy awoke and shocked everyone with the news Jonah Lockwood was her assailant.

SEPTEMBER 22, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,023)
Laurie refused to believe Jonah attacked Nancy. Geraldine suggested Nancy was confused by the carbon monoxide poisoning and didn't know what she was saying. When Colin invited Ron over for drinks, Tiffany feared Colin would be upset to see her and Ron together. Colin assured Tiffany he's forgiven both of them and wants to concentrate on the future. Ron told Tiffany and Colin that Cookie ran away to Paris and has no intention of continuing their marriage. Tiffany tried to convince Ron that Cookie will come back to him. Dr. Reed confronted Dr. Warner about Geraldine funding the hospital expansion. Rather than be bought or blackmailed into submission, Dr. Reed resigned from Greenhaven. Laurie begged Bill not to believe accusations against Jonah, and argued Jonah couldn't have harmed Nancy because he was on a flight to Atlanta. Bill learned via police headquarters that Jonah bought a ticket to Mexico instead of Georgia.

SEPTEMBER 23, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,024)
Martha was relieved to learn Nancy survived the attack. Bill and Lt. Anderson decided to search Jonah's apartment after learning Jonah never got on the flight to Mexico City. Vic stunned Adam and Nicole with news of Nancy's attack. An upset Nicole recalled the time Nancy was mistakenly shot by Stephanie Martin. Bill and Lt. Anderson wondered how an unemployed Jonah was capable of affording a $650 a month apartment and couldn't find a single trace of him in the apartment, not even a fingerprint. Martha, alone in the house, vowed to find the tape recorder when she heard the laughing woman again. Martha traced the laughter to a hall closet and screamed in terror when she discovered the ashen face of a man inside.

SEPTEMBER 24, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,025)
Mike informed Adam and Nicole that Nancy identified Jonah as her assailant. Gordon was puzzled by Geraldine's nervous demeanor and insistence that Jonah didn't try to murder Nancy. Adam confided to Mike he feared for Nancy's safety since Nancy had threatened to expose Keith's marriage to Suella. Nancy finally awoke and told a disbelieving Laurie that Jonah tried to kill her. After Geraldine assured Gordon that Keith is safely back in Mexico, Keith stunned them by casually strolling into the house as if he'd never been gone.

SEPTEMBER 27, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,026)
After getting over the shock of Keith's surprise appearance, Gordon and Geraldine embraced Keith with love and anger. Keith explained the story about his marriage to Suella, but neglected to tell Gordon about how Suella really died. Adam defended Jonah to Bill, saying there still might be a connection between Nancy's attack in Monticello with the scorpion incident on St. Elenora. Bill, Adam, and Lt. Anderson speculated Jonah might not have gone to Mexico City since he can't be sure he succeeded in killing Nancy. Gordon and Geraldine decided to tell Colin about Keith's "return from the dead." Keith warned his parents not to mention Geraldine and Charles' conspiracy, as Colin's strict ideals might motivate him into telling the press. Nancy recalled Jonah's attack for Mike. Geraldine shocked Keith by asking why he attempted to kill Nancy.

Keith: (referring to Suella's reaction to his engagement to Stacy Kendall) "She might have heard... and she might have made a fuss."
Geraldine: "(dryly) "A fuss! Yes, that's one way to describe bigamy."

SEPTEMBER 28, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,027)
Keith denied responsibility in Nancy's attack, then he told an unhappy Geraldine he met Laurie a year earlier at Colin's campaign party. Gordon persuaded Colin and Tiffany to come from Washington, though he only alluded it's because of Keith. Nancy told her story to Bill and Adam. Adam retrieved Nancy's sherry glass Keith used to drug her. Laurie accidentally overheard Nancy say that Jonah attacked her to cover up Tango's murder. A furious Laurie screamed at Nancy, calling her a liar.

SEPTEMBER 29, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,028)
Vic told Mike he suspects Jonah drugged him the night he passed out at Adam's apartment. Martha confessed to Adam and Nicole about seeing a man's face in the closet, but it disappeared. Laurie telephoned Mike to say she wouldn't be home for dinner, since she needs time alone. Vic unexpectedly joined Laurie, but he left when Laurie voiced no sympathy for Mike and Nancy's worries. Adam and Nicole searched the Marceau home but couldn't find any trace of a recording device. After Adam and Nicole left Martha alone, every light in the house suddenly went out. Martha screamed in terror as demonic laughter grew louder and louder in the darkness.

SEPTEMBER 30, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,029)
Ron returned to Monticello with Tiffany and Colin and learned about Nancy's brush with death. Neither Ron nor Nancy were impressed with Geraldine's assistance in getting Cookie released from Greenhaven. A prodigal Laurie returned home with apologies to Nancy. Bill left for Georgia after a witness spotted a Jonah lookalike. Colin and Tiffany were floored when Geraldine and Gordon told them that Keith is actually alive.

OCTOBER 1, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,030)
Colin flipped to see Keith in person. Keith recounted the story of his "death" to Colin and Tiffany, then the family worried about what to tell the public. Nancy informed Mike that Laurie came to her senses about Jonah's murderous impulses. Martha dropped by the Karr house and asked to spend the night, since she's afraid to be alone in the house while Bill is away. Mike caught Kate spying through the window. Kate claimed she wanted to be sure of Martha's safety. Adam and Nicole, on their way to dinner, decided to invite Martha and headed back to the Marceaus'. At the Marceau house, Adam and Nicole spotted a ghostly light moving around inside and went to investigate. Stumbling around in the darkness, Adam was afraid when Nicole seemingly disappeared.

NOTE: The Marceau home scenes were pre-recorded and dropped into the live telecast.

OCTOBER 4, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,031)
Adam headed to the basement to find Nicole. Kate told the Karrs the ghosts in Martha's house are spirits who want to possess human bodies. Mike warned Kate she might find herself in a mental hospital instead of jail if the malicious mischief against Bill and Martha continues. Adam found Nicole, who said she fainted after an icy hand touched her face in the dark. Searching the basement, Adam found the circuit breakers which had been turned off. Keith was angry when all discussions focused on how his return would affect Colin's career. The Whitneys elected Ron as the spin doctor for Keith's re-appearance. Mike extracted Kate's promise to leave the Marceaus alone by agreeing to help get her reinstated at Monticello General. Adam and Nicole stopped by the Karr house with news of seeing a ghostly light. A fearful Martha realized Kate couldn't be responsible since she was with her all evening.

Tiffany: "May I say something?"
Keith: "Who could stop you?"

OCTOBER 5, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,032)
A tearful Cookie telephoned Nancy from Paris and wanted to come home, but she realized she couldn't since Laurie has moved home. Mike convinced Cookie he'd find her a suitable place to stay. Keith agreed to do whatever Ron says is necessary to help Colin. When Tiffany suggested Keith call Stacy Kendall in person to tell her about his return, he commented Stacy may have no place in his future. Keith became enraged when Colin mentioned Suella's death, and warned him not to say anything about it to Ron. Ron was shocked to see Keith, who stunned everyone with his plans to run for a congressional seat in the 1972 election.

Keith: "What were you proposing, Mother? That I return to my grave like Dracula...?"

NOTE: A reference to Vietnam, made by Geraldine, was deleted from the script.

OCTOBER 6, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,033)
A depressed Laurie admitted she'll never allow herself to trust another man again after what Jonah did. Nancy informed Ron about Cookie's imminent return from Paris. Ron decided to hold a press conference in the Whitney mansion and balance the seriousness of Keith's return with wry humor. Colin confided to Ron that Keith isn't a changed man at all. Ron told Colin about Cookie's homecoming but admitted he doubts she will ever forgive him. Mike urged Vic to call Laurie, who agreed to meet Vic for dinner. Nancy reminded Ron that Cookie isn't ready to go home with him yet. Nancy and Laurie reeled at Ron's news of Keith Whitney's return.

OCTOBER 7, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,034)
Vic broke the news to Laurie that the police identified traces of chloral hydrate in Nancy's sherry glass. Laurie refused to listen when Vic presented evidence that Jonah drugged and murdered Tango, too. Adam and Lt. Anderson searched for clues in the Marceau basement while Kate secretly watched from the shadows. When Lt. Anderson threw the main circuit breaker, Martha felt an icy hand touch her face in the darkness.

OCTOBER 8, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,035)
Keith made an impromptu appearance at Colin's press conference and dazzled reporters with his "truthful" admission he left the country in order to save Colin's campaign. Mike and Nancy met an indifferent Cookie at the airport. Cookie feared seeing Ron and embraced Nancy when Nancy said she could go home with them. Everyone congratulated Keith on his "performance" at the press conference. A wry Keith told Ron about his marriage to the late Suella. Geraldine stunned Keith by inviting Nancy and Laurie over for cocktails. When Keith protested a visit by the Karr women, Geraldine warned him they must know whether or not Nancy and Laurie will recognize him as Jonah Lockwood.

Keith: "Suddenly I realized there are times when...only the truth sounds like the truth."

Keith: (referring to Suella's drowning) "The marriage was annulled... by the Grim Reaper."

OCTOBER 11, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,036)
Cookie became agitated when Nancy didn't want to leave her alone in the house. Laurie agreed to attend Geraldine's cocktail party so Cookie won't think Laurie is "babysitting" her. When Nancy suggested Cookie take Laurie's room temporarily, Cookie screamed she's never going home to Ron. Nancy agreed with Mike's observation that Cookie needs further psychiatric treatment. Jim and Liz returned from a Florida honeymoon. Ron stopped by the Karr house, insisting on seeing Cookie. While Nancy and Ron argued, Cookie came downstairs and flipped to see Ron. When Ron begged for her forgiveness, a furious Cookie slapped him hard across the face. Ron walked out in anger, and Nancy begged Jim to help Cookie.

Cookie: "You have to be careful about men, Laurie. I want to warn you about them. Men can be terrible liars and cheats..."

NOTE: This episode was pre-taped in the morning and telecast later the same day.

OCTOBER 12, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,037)
Nancy asked Jim to handle Cookie's psychiatric treatment now that he's taken over Brain Lee's practice. Colin admitted to Tiffany he's worried what Keith's next news story will be about. When Ron questioned Colin about his party's reaction to Keith's political future, Colin remarked the party's interest is unfortunately certain. Cookie submitted to therapy with Jim after learning Dr. Lee has moved to London, but she warned Jim she'd end up in a state mental hospital before allowing Ron to pay for her therapy sessions. Cookie spoke of wanting to live with someone else, then showed Jim a photograph in her locket... a photograph of a woman who bears a striking resemblance to Cookie.

Nancy: "All marriages don't turn out badly, Cookie."
Cookie: "Most of them do. Because of men and the way they lie and cheat. Oh, I'm not saying women are angels. I mean, without women like Tiffany... there might not be husbands like Ron."

OCTOBER 13, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,038)
Bill telephoned Martha from Chattanooga, TN, to say he's coming home with no leads on Jonah. Cookie told Jim the lady in the photograph inside her locket is probably an ancestor sent to help Cookie find happiness. Adam was discouraged to learn from the municipal office that blueprints for the Marceau house are no longer available. After Jim casually mentioned Bill and Martha's big, new house, Cookie invited herself to stay in their guestroom.

Jim: "Cookie... other men have been unfaithful, and their wives have forgiven them."
Cookie: "They must be crazy."

OCTOBER 14, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,039)
Nicole asked a skeptical Adam to consider the possibility of supernatural forces in the Martha's house. Martha told Nancy she and Bill would love to have Cookie as a houseguest. At the Marceau home, Kate came out of the basement and decided the spirits haven't been wicked enough. Then, she began to destroy the living room by smashing lamps and sweeping objects off tables. When Geraldine called Nancy to remind her of their date for cocktails, Martha ironically joked to Nancy that Geraldine is playing matchmaker for Keith and Laurie.

OCTOBER 15, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,040)
Cookie became hysterical at Nancy's suggestion she give Bill and Martha time to think about having Cookie as a permanent houseguest. Cookie cried that the Marceaus don't want her either and threatened to run away again if she can't stay with Bill and Martha. Laurie confessed to Nancy she's reluctant to attend Geraldine's party since Laurie didn't like Keith the first time she met him. When Gordon read a newspaper account of Keith's resurrection, Geraldine wondered what they'll be reading about him next. Geraldine and Gordon quarreled about Geraldine pushing Colin and Keith into political service. Keith failed to convince Geraldine to cancel the cocktail party. Later, Geraldine faced the tensest moment of her life as Nancy and Laurie arrived at the mansion. Introduced to Keith, Laurie stared into his eyes and stunned everyone with the news she knows him already.

Keith: (comparing himself to wild and hairy Jonah) "Just look at me, Mama. You ever see anything so square and respectable in all your life?"

NOTE: This episode was pre-taped the afternoon of Monday, October 11, 1971. A script reference to humorist P.G. Wodehouse's 90th birthday was an in-joke, as Wodehouse was one of Edge's most vocal celebrity fans.

OCTOBER 18, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,041)
Geraldine was relieved when Laurie told everyone she'd met Keith a year earlier at Colin's campaign party. Martha flipped to find her living room in shambles. After cleaning up the mess and making Cookie promise not to mention the incident to Bill, Martha gave Cookie the whole story about Kate Sloane and the haunting. Nancy said what Geraldine wanted to hear when Geraldine stated everything is right once again with Whitney and Karr families. Keith informed Nancy and Laurie of his intention to enter politics. Laurie admitted to Nancy she's not impressed with Keith. Geraldine warned Keith they have to do something about the situation with Stacy Kendall.

Keith: "Have no fear, my dear family, I'm as sober as I've ever been... I doubt that I can ever be drunk again."
Tiffany: (dryly) "What a loss to humanity..."

OCTOBER 19, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,042)
Jim was shocked to read an account of Keith's return in the morning paper and wasn't interested in Liz's suggestion that he contact Keith. Jim told Liz he's skeptical of Keith's altruistic adventure in South America. Bill informed Mike all traces of Jonah Lockwood have reached a dead end, as if Jonah never existed. After Martha talked about Kate with Cookie, Cookie saw Kate peering through the window. Martha disbelieved Kate's warnings that poltergeists were responsible for the trashed living room. Cookie acted strangely when Kate told her the ghost will like her since she and Cookie look alike.

OCTOBER 20, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,043)
Nancy worried about Cookie living in Bill and Martha's house since Kate is still playing supernatural tricks on them. Keith mentioned to Colin and Ron that Neil Davenport's death was a terrible loss as he could have successfully managed Keith's congressional campaign. Jim phoned Keith, who pretended to be delighted at hearing from his "old buddy." Jim and Keith planned a lunch date to reminisce about the good old days. Celia Burns visited Mike and Nancy and asked for Cookie's telephone number. Celia mentioned Cookie's locket, which Celia said is the most important thing in the world to Cookie.

OCTOBER 21, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,044)
Jim wouldn't allow Liz to lunch with Keith and him, as Jim wants to settle unfinished business. Tiffany told Colin she doesn't buy the story of Keith's trip to South America. When Colin commented Keith's friendship with Jim might be a good thing, Tiffany retorted Keith would be better off as Jim's patient. Liz and Laurie lunched at the Coach House so Liz could spy on Jim and Keith. Laurie smothered Liz's interest in Keith by stating there's no reason to be interested in a man like Keith Whitney. Laurie grew somber as Liz described her blissful happiness with Jim. Keith bristled at Jim's comments about Suella's untimely death and Keith's not being a changed man. Keith subtly hinted Jim might lose his medical license if he doesn't keep quiet about Suella.

Colin: "There's no reason to suspect Keith of lying, Tiffany."
Tiffany: "There's only one reason... because he's Keith."

OCTOBER 22, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,045)
Talking about Kate and the hauntings, Cookie confided to Martha she's not afraid of anything but loneliness. Nicole talked about Liz and Jim with Adam, commenting how magical it is when two people who love one another can come together. Adam feigned sleep at Nicole's not-so-subtle hints at marriage. Nicole and Adam told Bill what happened to Martha while he was out-of-town. Bill wasn't happy that Martha kept secrets from him. Cookie awoke at the sound of the laughing woman and almost discovered Kate in the living room. Kate went to the basement, where she opened a secret passageway which lead to a hidden room. Kate ran to embrace her husband Frank... who is very much alive!

Nicole: (to Adam) "I know that you are the most thick-headed, obstinate, unromantic, most insufferable, stupid and boring man I've ever met in my entire life... (ADAM PULLS HER INTO ONE LONG, PASSIONATE KISS . NICOLE IS LEFT PANTING.)

OCTOBER 25, 1971 (EPISODE#4,046)
Frank Sloane, partially paralyzed from a bullet wound to the back, berated Kate for failing to scare Martha and Bill out of the house. Frank instructed Kate to concentrate on scaring Martha, who is more susceptible to the tricks. Adam tried to convince Nancy and Mike that Cookie shouldn't live with the Marceaus while until Kate's tricks stop. Adam and Mike speculated Kate might be trying to get revenge on Bill because of Frank's death in a shootout with the police. Martha told an unhappy Cookie she can't remain in the Marceau home while all sorts of strange things are happening. Kate informed Frank about Cookie's mental instability, then goaded him into playing a tape recording of the Laughing Woman again. As the laughter echoed through the house, Cookie clutched her locket and told Martha, "We're not afraid."

OCTOBER 26, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,047)
Jim told Liz about Keith's threats to revoke Jim's medical license if he doesn't keep quiet about Keith's marriage to Suella. Geraldine chastised Keith for threatening Jim. Keith reminded Geraldine too many people know about Suella, and it's his intention to keep all of them quiet. Geraldine demanded to know the name of Keith's informant when Keith let it slip that he knows Cookie overheard a conversation about Suella and that's why Geraldine had Cookie committed. Martha confessed all of Kate's latest tricks to Bill, who decided it might be better to send Cookie home. During therapy, Cookie admitted to Jim she finds a peace and happiness she's never known in the Marceau house. When Jim questioned Cookie further about the Laughing Woman, Cookie stated the spirit laughs because she's glad about Cookie's presence.

OCTOBER 27, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,048)
Laurie's apathy toward life disturbed Nancy. Vic telephoned to apologize then asked Laurie out for a dinner date. Nancy was pleased that Laurie accepted Vic's invitation. Martha told Nancy about Cookie's encounter with the Laughing Woman. Nancy agreed the atmosphere at the Marceau house isn't conducive to Cookie's recovery, but was stymied about where else Cookie could stay. Cookie wept when she overheard Nancy and Martha discussing alternative living arrangements for her. Frank plotted to drive Cookie back into the mental hospital, reasoning Martha and Bill will feel so guilty they'll move out for good.

OCTOBER 28, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,049)
Ron warned Keith his reputation for fast cars and women won't be forgotten by voters or Keith's opponents in the next election. Keith and Ron decided to destroy the old image of Keith, while creating a solid, new one. Ron recognized the depth of competition between Colin and Keith, when Keith vowed he'd beat Colin to the White House. Colin confided to Ron that Keith really just wants to be Number One in Geraldine's eyes. Colin admitted to Keith he doesn't believe Keith's "one-man-peace-corps" trip to South America. Keith enjoyed a newspaper article labeling him the "new sex symbol of politics." Keith was stunned when a sobbing Stacey Kendall burst in and smothered him with an embrace.

OCTOBER 29, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,050)
Keith was less-than-thrilled over Stacey's sudden arrival, as well as her insistence that they marry soon. When Keith stalled talk of the wedding, Stacey suspected Keith is involved with another woman and became hysterical. Laurie insisted to Mike, Nancy, and Vic that she won't work on Keith's campaign the way she did on Colin's, and then admitted she doesn't think Keith has changed at all. Bill promised Adam he's going to get an airtight case against Kate Sloane and send her to jail for a very long time. Stacey failed to understand the subtext when Geraldine and Keith argued about why Keith had to leave last year, avoiding his October marriage to Stacey. Keith noticed an engagement ring on Stacey's finger. Stacey confessed she's been engaged half a dozen times in the last year, then ran crying from the room. After Stacey left, Keith called Laurie, who accepted a dinner date with him for the next night. Geraldine slapped Keith hard across the face when she learned he'd made a date with Laurie.

Stacey: (referring to the news of Keith's return) "I would have rushed right home on the next plane out of Orly if I didn't have a fitting on Wednesday..."
Keith: "A fitting...?"
Stacey: "My winter wardrobe... that's why I went there in the first place... Oh, Keith! Let me look at you! Oh, you look scrumptious...!"

Stacey: (about Keith's death) "Didn't I just weep buckets at the funeral?"
Colin:(dryly) "That's right. Keith, three people drowned before we could stop Stacey."

NOVEMBER 1, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,051)
Keith's vows that Laurie would never recognize him as Jonah Lockwood meant nothing to Geraldine, who insisted Laurie would never have the opportunity to recognize Keith, because Keith will never see her again. When Keith protested, Geraldine threatened to ruin his political career before it ever gets off the ground. Ron told Mike and Nancy he feels there's something inconsistent about Keith's stories. Laurie wasn't especially disappointed when Keith called to cancel their date. Cookie informed Bill she's not afraid of Kate Sloane or the laughing woman. Bill realized Cookie thinks the spirits are real.

NOVEMBER 2, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,052)
Ron told Bill the best thing the Marceaus can do for Cookie is to kick her out of their home, forcing Cookie to return home with Ron. Bill unnerved Ron with the suggestion Cookie might harm herself if she's placed in the position of going home against her will. Cookie cried to Martha about being a dull, unattractive woman, then she removed her wedding ring, which she vowed never to wear again. Martha urged Cookie to be and fair and at least see Ron's side of things. Cookie complied with Martha's request by going to Adam and asking him to start divorce proceedings against Ron.

NOVEMBER 3, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,053)
Adam attempted to dissuade Cookie from divorce, but she insisted it's the only fair thing to do for Ron, who obviously would rather be married to a more attractive woman like Tiffany. Adam warned Cookie she could be charged with slander if she continues to make accusations against Tiffany. Cookie informed Adam that Ron did have an affair with Tiffany, then Cookie said she'd find another divorce attorney. Liz and Jim discussed their financial affairs, and Jim suggested Liz should sell Claybank. Keith spotted Jim and Liz lunching at the Coach House and invited himself to join them. Nancy was delighted when Laurie accepted a date with Vic after Keith canceled their dinner together. Behind Geraldine's back, Keith called Laurie to re-instate their date, but he slipped and mentioned her relationship with Vic. Laurie wondered how Keith knew so much about Vic when the two have never met.

NOVEMBER 4, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,054)
Keith lied to Laurie that Colin told him all about Vic the night Laurie attended Colin's campaign party. Laurie was astonished at Keith's remarkable memory and agreed he can call her again if he likes. Later, Laurie confided to Nancy she's unsure about whether or not she likes Keith. When Frank played a tape of the Laughing Woman again, Martha called Bill on the phone, but the laughter stopped before Bill could hear it. Frank secretly watched Martha's every movement through an air vent. Keith informed Gordon he will not marry Stacey Kendall. Gordon sided with Keith against Geraldine, but Gordon insisted Keith will need the right kind of wife before the November election. Geraldine shivered at the thought of Laurie when Keith admitted he has a vision of the perfect wife. Adam suggested to a skeptical Bill that the Marceaus hire a professional ghost-buster to prove actual spirits are not haunting the Marceau home. Bill caught a woman lurking outside the house, but it turned out to be Ceila Burns, Cookie's friend from Greenhaven.

NOVEMBER 5, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,055)
Nancy worried about Cookie, who is still missing after her meeting with Adam. Cookie arrived at the Marceau's and cried at the sight of Ceila. Martha made Cookie call a relieved Nancy. Nancy was puzzled by Cookie's cryptic remark that Ron will be fine now. As Ceila commented about what a lovely, cozy home the Marceau's have, Frank spied on them through the air vent. Kate had an idea about convincing Cookie and Martha that the Laughing Woman actually exists. Keith intruded on Vic and Laurie's dinner at the Coach House. Laurie was absolutely stunned when Keith inadvertently referred to Jim as "Crazylegs." After Keith left, Laurie told Vic she'd heard someone else use that nickname for Jim...Jonah Lockwood!

NOVEMBER 8, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,056)
Vic and Laurie speculated about how Jonah could have possibly known about Jim's naval nickname. Looking through old photo albums, Jim told Liz his mother died giving birth to his sister Dee-Dee, who was adopted by very distant relatives. Jim theorized that Dee-Dee doesn't even realize she has a brother. When talk turned to Keith, Jim admitted he tried to psychoanalyze Keith in the Navy but was frightened by what he touched. Adam informed Nicole that Cookie probably couldn't succeed in divorcing Ron if he proves she's mentally unstable. Laurie was reluctant to tell Bill about Jonah's knowledge of Jim's nickname, but Vic persuaded her to at least tell Mike. Keith dropped off a wedding gift for Liz and Jim, then subtly warned Jim to tack his medical diplomas on the wall very carefully. Jim understood the implication when Liz opened the gift to reveal a framed sampler that bore the words: "Silence is golden."

Liz: "Oh, Jim... you look absolutely darling in your sailor suit."
Jim: "Yeah, that's what the Admiral said to me every day."

NOVEMBER 9, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,057)
An angry Liz revealed Keith's threats against Jim to Adam and Nicole. Adam advised Jim that Cookie wants to petition Ron for a divorce. Nancy noticed an uncomfortable Laurie changed the subject when Vic mentioned Jim's nickname. Cookie told Bill and Martha about her impending divorce from Ron, then Frank bristled at Cookie's comments about staying with the Marceau's forever after her divorce is final. When Frank shot down Kate's failed haunting schemes, Kate showed him an antique ball gown, which Kate assured him would make a believer out of Cookie and the Marceaus.

NOTE: This episode was pre-recorded.

NOVEMBER 10, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,058)
When Bill suggested Ron will fight Cookie's divorce petition, Cookie retorted Ron will agree to anything in order to keep Tiffany's name out of the paper. Martha didn't agree when Bill told her Ron wants them to make Cookie leave, thereby forcing her to return home. Colin reluctantly agreed to Geraldine's request that he publicly endorse Keith's congressional campaign. Tiffany told Ron that Cookie might listen to her better than she does to him. Tiffany called Cookie, who agreed to allow Tiffany to visit. Martha was disturbed by Cookie's comment that Tiffany can't hurt her as long she's staying in the Marceau house.

NOVEMBER 11, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,059)
Martha worried about Cookie's meeting with Tiffany, but Cookie made Martha promise to leave them alone. Tiffany stressed to Cookie that she's completely in love with Colin and has no interest in Ron, who loves only Cookie. Cookie didn't buy Tiffany's story, then threatened to file adultery charges against Ron and name Tiffany as corespondent. Laurie reluctantly told Mike and Nancy about Jonah's knowledge of Jim's nickname, then confessed she avoided telling them because she's afraid of ever having to face Jonah again. Mike promised Laurie he'd tell Bill. Nancy was upset when Martha arrived with news of Cookie's meeting with Tiffany. Martha explained Cookie's oddly calm behavior and bizarre affinity for the Marceau home. After Tiffany left, every light in the Marceau house went out. Cookie fainted at the sight of Kate, who walked slowly down the stairs in the antique ball gown, carrying a flickering candle.

NOTE: The last act was pre-recorded.

NOVEMBER 12, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,060)
Liz feared for Jim when he confessed he knew about Keith's bigamist relationship with Suella and Stacey, a secret that could destroy the Whitney family. Keith was delighted with the outcome after meeting with the leaders of his party, and dryly commented no one in the room knew how opposed to his nomination Colin really was. Geraldine informed a happy Keith that the head of the party is certain Keith will be their next congressional candidate. Adam and Nicole dropped in to see the Fields, and Adam repeated his theory that Rosella's murder was actually an attempt on Jim's life to keep him quiet about Suella. When Liz remarked about Keith's bigamy being a nasty trick, Jim laughed that it was no worse than Keith's naval trick of putting harmless scorpions into people's shoes. Adam quietly made a connection between Keith's scorpions and Nancy's scorpion attack on St. Elenora. Adam theorized to Nicole that Keith might have been in both St. Elenora and Monticello instead of South America.

NOVEMBER 15, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,061)
Adam speculated Keith could have attempted to kill Jim in order to silence his knowledge of Keith's marriage to Suella. Nicole reminded Adam he once suspected Charles Weldon of being the killer, but Adam retorted that was before he knew that Keith Whitney-the person with the most to lose-had actually been alive then. When Colin insinuated Keith isn't fit to run for public office, Geraldine speculated Keith might change for the better if he finally gets the attention he's craved his whole life. Tiffany shocked everyone with news of her visit to see Cookie. Tiffany informed Geraldine and Colin that Cookie plans to sue Ron for divorce, but stated Cookie appears to be in control of her faculties. As Geraldine expressed her happiness at Cookie's recovery, Cookie lay unconscious on the floor at the Marceau home. Adam arranged to meet Nancy to find out more about the scorpion attack on St. Elenora. Martha revived Cookie, who told her she saw a spirit in an old-fashioned ball gown. Cookie stunned Martha by insisting she wants to contact the spirit.

[NOTE: A reference to Geraldine meeting Gordon at a 1930's lawn party given by the Roosevelts was deleted due to how much it would date the characters.]

NOVEMBER 16, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,062)
Cookie insisted to Bill the figure she saw was a real spirit, not Kate Sloane in disguise. Cookie declared she's a "sensitive," one who has an affinity for hearing and seeing the dead. Martha accused Cookie of wanting to believe in ghosts. Tiffany explained her conversation with Cookie to Colin, reiterating how much she loves Colin with all her heart and devotion. Tiffany promised she won't give up trying to convince Cookie that Ron loves only her, then nixed Colin's suggestion they warn Ron about Cookie's divorce action. Colin feared Keith's mysteries might now hold up to public scrutiny. Keith invited Laurie to dinner to celebrate his congressional campaign. Frank badgered Kate to rob the Marceaus since he and Kate are desperate for money.

NOTE: This episode was pre-taped the evening of November 15, 1971.

NOVEMBER 17, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,063)
Nicole urged Adam not to scare Nancy with his theory about Keith being a murderer. Liz told Jim she wrote to her father Orin about selling Claybank, but so far, she hasn't received a reply. When Jim admitted he thinks Keith isn't mentally stable enough to hold public office, Liz grew more concerned. Laurie announced to an unhappy Vic she's having dinner tomorrow night with Keith Whitney, then walked out in anger when Vic made male chauvinist remarks about women staying home where they belong. Laurie arrived home, just as Adam was about to tell Mike and Nancy his theory about Keith. After Laurie stated she's more determined than ever to go out with Keith, Adam decided to temporarily keep quiet.

NOTE: This episode was pre-recorded on November 16, 1971. The "Edge" studio was dark (no taping or live telecast) on Wednesday, November 17, 1971, due to location shooting for the Hawley Farms remote.

NOVEMBER 18, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,064)
Cookie insisted to Bill she saw a real spirit, not Kate Sloane in disguise. Kate panicked when she overheard Bill's intention to have her picked up for questioning. When Bill, Martha, and Cookie left to have dinner at a restaurant, Frank urged Kate to rob the house. Kate objected to Frank's plan claiming she'd be the first person the police suspect, but Frank convinced her the plan will work if she only steals one small piece of jewelry at a time and pawns it. When Ron stopped by the Whitney house unexpectedly, Colin pressed Tiffany to tell him about Cookie's divorce intentions. Ron was floored to learn Cookie is contemplating divorce. Kate returned to the secret room in the basement and showed Frank the jewelry she swiped...Cookie's antique locket.

NOTE: This episode was pre-recorded.

NOVEMBER 19, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,065)
Nancy worried about Laurie's involvement with Keith. Laurie realized Vic was so upset about her date with Keith because she and Vic already had theatre tickets. While discussing the past, Gordon credited Geraldine with the family's success in politics, then recalled the night he lost a crucial election and Geraldine commented at least she had two wonderful sons. Geraldine admitted she always wanted to be the mother of a United States president. Keith joked he may skip being a senator and go straight to Pennsylvania Avenue. Vic gave his theatre tickets to Adam and Nicole after sadly declaring Laurie prefers Keith over him. Nancy urged Laurie to break her date with Keith. Geraldine intercepted Laurie's phone call to Keith and was furious to learn about his date with Laurie. Enraged, Geraldine confronted Keith with his betrayal of the promise to stay away from Laurie. When Keith tried to worm his way out of it, Geraldine slapped him, vowing she'll withdraw her support of his congressional campaign and no longer cover up his dirty little secrets...like the death of Suella. Keith horrified Geraldine to her very core by asking if she'd also reveal the truth about the deaths of Rosella Gray, Neil Davenport, Tango Humphries, and all the other people he murdered...

NOVEMBER 22, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,066)
Geraldine became ill as Keith launched into a litany of his murderous escapades, and blamed Geraldine for ordering him to "take care of Suella Duval." Vic attempted to give his scalped theatre tickets to Adam and Nicole, but they not-so-subtly goaded him into calling Laurie to remind her they have a planned date. Adam stirred Vic's curiosity with hints that Keith is trouble, but Adam refused to fully share his suspicions until he has more proof. When Nicole later joked she was worried Adam might suggest Keith is a murderer, Adam stated that was his exact thought. Laurie failed to reach Vic by phone to apologize about forgetting their theatre date, then reaffirmed her view to Mike that Vic's a "hot-head." Nancy pointed out Keith Whitney might have a temper too, but Laurie insisted he's probably "very cool." When Keith informed Geraldine that he blackmailed embezzling Uncle Charles into his conspiracy of murder, Geraldine begged him to stop torturing her. Keith pushed the envelope by freely admitting he tried to murder Nancy with carbon monoxide poisoning. After Geraldine retired to her room in horror, Keith telephoned Laurie, who agreed to accompany him on a day trip to the Whitney summer estate.

Keith:(RELIVING IT IN HIS MIND) "That was quite a night for me, Mama. I'll never forget that night. I thought I'd be scared. I thought I might lose my nerve at the last minute. Instead... I was exhilarated! That's the only word for it. I felt as if I was doing something I was born to do. It was like the first time I went skiing... I mean really skiing, down that big mountain in Aspen... when the whole thing came together for me. The snow and the wind and the sky and...gravity! Yes, that's what I felt that night in Jim Fields apartment... that gravity was on my side...(PANTOMIMING IT AS GERALDINE WATCHES HIM WITH HORROR-FILLED EYES:) Jimmy's door was opened! Imagine that! Rosella forgot to close the door behind her. Then she got in bed to wait for him. Only I showed up first. (HE DOESN'T COMPLETE THE STABBING GESTURE. WHISPERS) Then I did what I had to do."

Keith: "Mama, please understand! Once I killed Suella...what did it matter who else I killed? What's the difference if it was one person or ten? Murder is still murder, isn't that right? You can only hang once..."

NOVEMBER 23, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,067)
Vic was delighted Laurie canceled her date with Keith and agreed to attend the play tomorrow night. Vic insisted on meeting Laurie for a coffee. Martha told a relieved Nancy that Cookie's visit with Tiffany went well, but Nancy was disappointed Cookie still won't return to Ron. Frank berated Kate for stealing a worthless piece of junk like Cookie's locket. Martha warned Bill if Kate continues her tricks, Cookie might go off the deep end again. Cookie discovered her locket is missing, then accused Martha and Bill of stealing it. Vic and Laurie nearly came to blows with Vic's cracks about Laurie considering a career as an airline hostess, but when Vic grew protective over Laurie's impending date with Keith, they ended up in a passionate kiss.

NOVEMBER 24, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,068)
Gordon noted the tears on a depressed Geraldine's face. Geraldine feigned having a cold but reacted harshly when Gordon commented how much Keith has become more sincere like Colin. Then, Geraldine grimaced when Gordon assured her she'd cleverly and successfully buried all of Keith's past skeletons. Keith told Colin and Tiffany about his date in the country, pronouncing Laurie Karr a "new conquest." Nicole advised Adam not to share his suspicions about Keith with Mike and Nancy, but Adam phoned Nancy for a visit anyway. Gordon told Colin and Tiffany that Geraldine fears Keith isn't stable enough for political service but was at a loss as to why Geraldine is suddenly so afraid of Keith. When Nancy recounted the story of her visit to St. Elenora, Adam was astonished to learn Suella committed suicide, as her religious convictions would have considered it a mortal sin. Just as Nancy was horrified to realize Keith probably murdered Suella and made it look like suicide, Laurie got into Keith's car to head out to the Whitney's isolated summer estate. GERALDINE: "Doesn't every problem in this house revolve around...Keith?"

Adam terrified Nancy with his suspicion that Keith killed Rosella Gray as well as Suella Duval. Nancy interrupted Mike's lunch with Vic, imploring him to come home. Laurie and Keith arrived at the Whitney summer estate, which Keith jokingly called "Whitney's Folly." Laurie was fascinated with the tower on the estate but refused to go inside when Keith reminded her Charles fell to his death from the observation deck. As Keith and Laurie ran playfully through the woods, the tower loomed ominously in the distance. Mike and Nancy weren't reassured when they recalled Adam's deductive powers have usually been right. Laurie heard Keith's hearty laugh, but saw the face of Jonah.

Laurie:"Well, it's just so hard to imagine you as President, Keith. I mean... you hardly look old enough to shave!"
Keith:"To shave..." (THE HUMOR OF IT STRIKES HIM AND HE BEGINS TO LAUGH UPROARIOUSLY)
Laurie:"Was it that funny?"
Keith:"To shave...(HE GOES ON LAUGHING. AND AS LAURIE LOOKS AT HIM: SUPERIMPOSE THE LAUGHING FACE OF JONAH LOCKWOOD--AND THEN LAURIE'S WIDE-EYED STUNNED REACTION)

NOVEMBER 29, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,071)
Keith's laughter abruptly died when he realized he was reminding Laurie of Jonah Lockwood. Later, Keith distracted Laurie with campaign talk, but when he mentioned having a bandaged face like a mummy the first time they met, Laurie began staring at Keith's face more intently. Mike and Adam tried to calm Nancy's fears by reiterating Keith has no reason to want to harm Laurie. Mike suggested they all speak to Jim Fields, the one person who knew both Suella and Rosella. Jim was disturbed by Liz's news of Cookie losing the locket. Adam dropped by Jim's office just as Liz opened mail containing an 8x10 glossy of Keith Whitney's campaign pose. Jim assured Adam that Suella never would have killed herself as she was devoutly religious and considered suicide a Mortal Sin. A reluctant Laurie begged Keith to take her back to Monticello, but he insisted on cooking her a steak dinner at the boat house. Jim was stunned when Adam intimated Keith returned to Monticello and murdered Rosella Gray after killing Suella Duval.

NOVEMBER 30, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,072):
Jim satisfied Adam's suspicions by admitting Keith was warped enough to commit murder. Adam speculated Keith stabbed Rosella by mistake while making an attempt on Jim's life, then theorized Keith was probably responsible for Neil Davenport's fatal "car accident." Jim reluctantly agreed to make a house-call when Martha phoned to say Cookie won't leave the house without her locket. Colin tried to console Geraldine about Keith, but they spent most of the talk reminiscing about Keith's amoral cruelty as a child. Colin assured Tiffany he's done as much to help Keith as she has Cookie Christopher. While explaining to Jim about seeing a vision of the ghost, Cookie decided the ghost stole the locket because it belongs to her.

DECEMBER 1, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,073):
Nicole privately speculated to Mike and Nancy that Adam has become too emotional and may be wrong about Keith Whitney's guilt, but Adam arrived with news he's more convinced than ever that Keith's a killer. When Laurie insisted Keith call a local restaurant to see about dinner, Keith secretly feigned the call and told Laurie they'd have to have dinner on the estate. Keith joked about Laurie having never smoked marijuana then caught Laurie staring at him strangely again. Geraldine stunned Gordon with the news she's going to force Keith to drop his congressional campaign for 1972. Nancy phoned the Whitneys, insisting she come over to talk about Keith and Laurie. Meanwhile, at the Whitney summer estate, Laurie recognized Keith's laugh again and realized Keith and Jonah are the same person.

DECEMBER 2, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,074):
A stunned Laurie tried to get away from Keith, who at first denied Laurie's accusations but finally admitted he's in fact Jonah Lockwood. Laurie refused to listen as Keith lied that he didn't attempt to kill Nancy with carbon monoxide. Keith suggested that hysterical Laurie have a drink of sherry to calm down. Gordon warned Geraldine she should never have allowed Nancy to visit, then was mortified when Geraldine insinuated that Keith murdered Suella Duval. Mike and Nancy arrived at the Whitney Mansion, but Nancy insisted on confronting Geraldine alone. Nancy was terrified when a thunderstruck Geraldine collapsed at the news of Keith and Laurie being alone together on a date. Keith drugged Laurie's wine, which she weakly accepted to play along with him.

Keith:"Now you just listen to me! You cut out these hysterics and listen! (SHE TURNS TO FACE HIM, TERRIFIED) I am NOT this Jonah Whoever-he is. I am Keith Whitney. If I've got eyes like your friend Jonah, maybe it's because we both look at you the same way...If my laugh sounds like him...maybe it's the way you want to hear it."
Laurie: "No! It's the truth! The more you talk...the more I look at you...I know who you are! I KNOW WHO YOU ARE!" (KEITH GLOWERS AT HER. THEN HE RELEASES HER ARM, AND GOES SLOWLY, BACK TO THE KITCHEN. HE POURS HIMSELF ANOTHER DRINK, AND THEN, BEGINS TO CHUCKLE SOFTLY)
Keith:"Yes...yes, indeed. Mother knows best. Like the saying goes, mother knows best...(LOOKS UP WITH A SMILE) Mama warned me about this, Laurie. Yes, she did. She told me never to see you again...not after that first night when you and your mother came to visit. That was a test night, you see...an experiment. To find out whether or not I was going to get away with it. Whether you or your mother was going to recognize me right off the bat. Well, you didn't. But mama said, you can never see Laurie Karr again! Because if you do...one of these days she's going to know who you are...she's going to remember your eyes, or the tone of your voice...or your laugh...(HE CHUCKLES AND SIPS HIS DRINK) And she was right, wasn't she?"
Laurie: "Oh, God...no" (SHE BACKS UP)
Keith: (WITH JONAH'S SOUTHERN ACCENT) "Come on, honey chile, don't look at me that way. You were crazy about 'ol Jonah once. Who knows. Maybe you'll like his buddy Keith Whitney, too."

Gordon:"Geraldine, I can't believe there's still something I don't know about that marriage..."
Geraldine:"No. You know everything about the marriage. But there is one thing you don't know about the girl."
Gordon:"What's that?"
Geraldine:"How she died, Gordon. How she REALLY died."
Gordon:"But you said it was...suicide... You said that when Keith asked her for a divorce, she...drowned herself. (GERALDINE LOOKS UP AT HIM, DIRECTLY INTO HIS EYES. AND THE REALIZATION COMES TO HIM UNSPOKEN BY HER) Oh, dear...no..."

Keith:(HE LIGHTS THE FIRE) "It won't be long now, honey. I know you're hungry. So am I. I'm just plain starved. And I'm going to need nourishment. Yes, for what I have to do, I need lots of energy. You understand, Laurie?" (AND HE TURNS TO GRIN AT HER. CAMERA MOVES SLOWLY TO LAURIE'S UNCONSCIOUS BODY ON THE FLOOR)
(FADE OUT)

DECEMBER 3, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,075)
Nancy told Mike, Adam, and Nicole about her meeting with Geraldine. Nancy feared Geraldine's horrified reaction to Keith and Laurie's date, but Mike assured her Laurie would be home safely in time for her theatre date with Vic. At the Whitney summer estate, Keith finished his steak dinner and grinned at an unconscious Laurie, but Laurie was secretly awake. On Adam's advice, Bill arrived at the Karr home, but was skeptical of Adam's theories about Keith. When Bill argued Keith couldn't have returned to Monticello to commit murder without being recognized, Adam realized Keith probably used a disguise. Nancy panicked when Adam drew a beard and moustache on Keith's campaign photo, revealing Keith and Jonah Lockwood as the same man. At the boathouse, Keith lamented being forced to kill Laurie and loaded a rifle. Laurie knocked Keith off balance, making a dash for freedom. Keith chased Laurie through the woods, but she eluded him. Laurie made it to the car, then was horrified to see Keith in a clearing dangling the car keys. Keith fired a shot at Laurie, but missed. Laurie made a mad dash for the tower and locked herself inside. Keith, knowing another entrance to the tower, tried to overpower Laurie, who was armed with a crowbar. Laurie fell and was knocked unconscious while attempting to strike Keith. Geraldine suddenly arrived just as Keith had carried Laurie to the top of the tower staircase. A tearful Geraldine begged Keith to let her help him, but completely insane, he began to recite the Presidential oath. When Geraldine moved closer, Keith tried to finish off Laurie, but in his haste, he tripped and fell headlong down the winding staircase. Geraldine sank to her knees as Keith died at her feet.

(REMOTE, COUNTRY PLACE. LONG SHOT OF THE BOAT HOUSE, AS LAURIE RUNS AWAY FROM KEITH. KEITH APPEARS AT THE DOORWAY, HOLDING THE HUNTING RIFLE AND LOOKING FOR HER. THEN HE SEES HER AND BREAKS INTO A RUN AFTER HER. CUT TO: OTHER SHOTS OF THE CHASE: THROUGH THE WOODS, DOWN THE ROAD, ETC. THEN A SHOT OF LAURIE AS SHE SEES THE CAR AND RUNS FOR IT. SHE CLIMBS IN. A CU OF HER AS SHE FUMBLES TO FIND THE CAR KEYS, SOBBING IN HER FEAR AND ANXIETY. BUT SHE CAN'T FIND THE KEYS. SHE LOOKS UP AND WE ZOOM TO KEITH. HE STANDS IN THE CLEARING, LOOKING AT HER WITH A GRIN. HE HAS THE CAR KEYS IN HIS HAND AND TOSSES THEM IN THE AIR. THEN TAKE LAURIE AS SHE CLIMBS OUT OF THE CAR AND FLEES DOWN THE ROAD, KEITH DOESN'T FOLLOW HER IN THE SAME DIRECTION, BUT GRINS--KNOWING A SHORT CUT. HE TURNS AND HEADS IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION. THEN, A SHOT OF LAURIERUNNING DOWN THE ROAD, WHEN SUDDENLY: KEITH APPEARS OUT OF THE WOODS, AND CRIES OUT:)
Keith: "Laurie!" (SHE SCREAMS WHEN SHE SEES HIM AND RUNS AGAIN. KEITH LIFTS THE GUN SWIFTLY AND FIRES. HE MISSES, AS SHE RUNS BROKENLY. THEN SHE HEADS FOR THE TOWER, AS HE STARTS AFTER HER. SHE TREIS THE DOOR OF THE TOWER, AND IT'S OPEN. SHE GETS INSIDE AND SHUTS IT AFTER HER. SHE SEES THE BOLT AND SNAPS IT CLOSED, RELIEVED, BELIEVING HERSELF SAFE, THEN TAKE KEITH AS HE APPROACHES THE TOWER. HE TRIES TO OPEN THE DOOR, BUT FINDS IT BOLTED AGAINST HIM. HE SMILES)
Keith: (TO HIMSELF) "Something I forgot to tell you, Laurie. There's a generator room in the tower..." (HE GOES AROUND TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TOWER. CUT BACK TO: LAURIE INSIDE, WAITING, FEARFUL. SHE LOOKS BACK AND SEES: THE WINDING STAIRCASE. CUT BACK TO KEITH, AS HE CAREFULLY OPENS THE DOOR THAT LEADS TO THE GENERATOR ROOM. HE GOES INSIDE. CUT BACK TO LAURIE AS SHE MOVES AWAY FROM THE DOOR, PANTING, NOT KNOWING WHAT TO DO. SHE SPOTS A CROWBAR OR SOMETHING SIMILAR AND PICKS IT UP, JUST FOR THE SAKE OF POSSESSING A WEAPON. THEN, SUDDENLY, SHE HEARS SOMETHING BEHIND HER AND WHIRLS TO SEE KEITH GRINNING AT HER)
Laurie: "No... no!" (SHE BACKS AWAY)
Keith:(EASILY) "You can't get away now, honey chile. (HE DROPS THE GUN ON THE FLOOR) I won't need this any more. You're not going to have a hunting accident, Laurie. You're going to have a very bad fall... just like poor Uncle Charles. (SHE SCREAMS AGAIN AS HE COMES TOWARD HER. SHE TURNS AND RUNS UP THE STAIRS. HE LAUGHS.) "Yes, that's where I want you to go." (SHE STOPS. SHE LOOKS AT THE WEAPON IN HER HAND, AND RAISES IT TO STRIKE HIM. HE DUCKS AND THE FORCE OF HER MOTION SENDS HER TOPPLING OFF THE STAIRS. SHE FALLS, KNOCKED UNCONSCIOUS. HE LOOKS DOWN AT HER AND SIGHS.) "Now what'd you do that for? Now I've got to carry you all the way up there..." (HE SIGHS AND REACHES FOR HER)

(REMOTE, THE TOWER. KEITH HAS CARRIED LAURIE ALMOST TO THE TOP OF THE TOWER STAIRS. NOW HE SETS HER DOWN, AND WALKS UP THE REST OF THE WAY IN ORDER TO OPEN THE TRAP DOOR. THEN HE TURNS:)
Keith: "This is really going to break my heart, Laurie. You may not believe I have a heart... but I do. (HE COMES BACK DOWN FOR HER, WALKING A STEP OR TWO BELOW HER UNCONSCIOUS FORM IN ORDER TO GET LEVERAGE TO PICK HER UP AND CARRY HER. BUT AS HE BENDS TO DO THIS HE HEARS)
Geraldine's Voice: "Keith!" (HE WHIRLS, AND TO HIS STUNNED SURPRISE, SEES GERALDINE ON THE LANDING)
Keith: "Mother!"
Geraldine: "Keith... for the love of heaven...come down. Let that girl alone. Come down..."
Keith: "What are you doing here? How did you get here?"
Geraldine: "I drove out... just as soon as I heard...why you were here...who you were with."
Keith: (CLOSE TO TEARS) "Oh, mama... why did you have to do it? Why did you have to come here?"
Geraldine: "Keith...please..."
Keith:"She recognized me, Mama. She knew who I was. She saw Jonah Lockwood in me..."
Geraldine: "Oh, dear God..."
Keith: "I didn't think she'd do that, mama honestly I didn't... I wanted Jonah Lockwood to be dead! But she made him come to life! That's why... she has to die, too, Mama. She has to die... or everything is spoiled!"
Geraldine: "Keith...believe me... no one has to be killed...no one else...(SHE TAKES A STEP UP)
Keith: "No! Don't come up here! Don't!"
Geraldine: "You can't do this. Don't you see? It's over now, Keith. Now... you must rest, my son. You need...rest...(SHE TAKES ANOTHER STEP)
Keith: "Rest! What are you talking about? I've got things to do, Mama. I've got a million things to do! (AS SHE TAKES ANOTHER STEP) Stop that! Stay where you are..."
Geraldine: "You're sick, Keith. That's why you need rest... Come home with me. Come home and let me...take care of you!"
Keith: "No, Mama! I'm going to take care of myself... I'm going to be what you never thought I could be...I'm going to be more than Papa ever was! Do you hear me? I'm going to be bigger than Colin and bigger than Papa! You're going to be proud of me yet, Mama, you're going to say... He was the best one! He was the best!"
Geraldine:(TEARS FALLING NOW) "Oh, Keith, please please... come to your mother...
Keith: (CRYING NOW, TOO) "I want to, Mama. I want to. I want to come to you with... everything you ever wanted. I want you to... stand by my side...when I say...I do solemnly swear..."
Geraldine: "Keith!"
Keith:"I do solemnly swear... that I will faithfully execute the office...of President of the United States..."
Geraldine: "Oh, my poor boy...my poor baby..."
Keith: "...and will, to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend...the Constitution..."
Geraldine: (WALKS UP ANOTHER STEP) "Please...come to your mother!"
Keith: (SHRIEKS) "No! Stay away! Stay away!"
Geraldine: "I can't...I can't...I've been away from you...too long..."
Keith: (SHOUTING IT) "Preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution... of the United States!" (AS SHE COMES EVEN CLOSER) "No!" (HE TURNS TO GO UP THE STAIRS AGAIN, BUT HE HAS FORGOTTEN ABOUT LAURIE ON THE STEP ABOVE HIM. HE TRIPS. CUT TO: GERALDINE AS SHE SHRIEKS:)
Geraldine: "Keith!" (AND KEITH FALLS. SHE COVERS HER FACE AND CRIES OUT, THEN HURRIES TO HIS FALLEN BODY, AND SINKS TO HER KNEES. SHE TOUCHES HIM AND KNOWS HE IS DEAD. IN A WHISPER:) "Rest...rest..."
(FADE OUT)

DECEMBER 6, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,076)
Sheriff Penbrook telephoned Gordon, who rushed to the summer estate. Adam, Nicole, Mike, Nancy, and Bill arrived at Whitney's Folly. Nancy was terrified when she saw a body covered with a sheet, but Geraldine assured her it was Keith then began to weep. Mike and Nancy were relieved that Laurie was unharmed. Nancy comforted Geraldine and swore they'd never forget that she was the one who saved Laurie's life. Martha told Cookie she wants a piano for Christmas and hoped that Bill was relaying that message to Nancy at that very moment. Martha admitted to Cookie that Aunt Martha thought music was "spiritual" and connected the living to the dead. Ceila stopped by to visit Cookie and made Martha uncomfortable with talk about how Fred is too preoccupied with other things recently. Cookie informed Ceila she's never felt better since she's decided to divorce Ron and stay with her "friends." Martha and Ceila realized Cookie was referring to the spirits that haunt the Marceau house. Bill telephoned Martha and stunned her with the news about Keith. Gordon arrived the summer estate and begged Geraldine not to blame herself for Keith's madness.

Celia: "Sometimes I get the feeling that men don't really think of their homes as their castles anymore. These days, I think men think of their homes as... retreats. Or maybe..sanctuaries. Where their enemies can't reach them, where they don't have to pose all the time, or watch what they say or do."

Gordon: (about Keith) "The devil owned that boy, Geraldine, don't you realize that? You can't take all the blame for the evil that was in him..."

NOTE: According to Bill, the Whitney summer estate is about an hour and ten minute drive from Monticello.

DECEMBER 7, 1971 (EPISODE # 4,077)
The doctor attending Laurie told Mike and Nancy that Laurie spoke just before he sedated her, and she said, "Vic saved me." Nancy refused a sedative claiming that Geraldine had suffered far more than she. Bill warned Adam and Nicole that criminal charges might be brought against Geraldine for concealing Keith's identity as Jonah Lockwood, a known killer. Ceila was skeptical when Cookie told her about seeing the ghost and believes the locket was hers in a former life. Listening over the intercom in the basement, Frank was furious to hear Cookie say she's never felt safer or happier. Kate worried when Frank insisted they'd have to use "muscle" to scare Cookie out of the house. Ceila warned Cookie that talk about spirits might get her recommited to Greenhaven. Frank decided to arrange an "accident" for Cookie. When Kate protested that it might go awry and actually kill Cookie, Frank insisted it was a risk they'd have to take.

NOTE: The doctor in this episode must have trained with Dr. Julia Hoffman from "Dark Shadows." Not only is he anxious to dispense tranquilizers to Nancy (who didn't even witness the horror), he also sedates Laurie, even though she's suffered a potentially serious head injury!

DECEMBER 8, 1971 (EPISODE # 4,078)
Ron caught up with Colin and Tiffany, who were waiting for a delayed airline flight at Monticello International. Colin and Tiffany were stunned to hear the news of Keith's death and attempted murder of Laurie. Cookie, alone in the Marceau home, begged the ghost to appear to her again. Bill and Martha lamented the fact that Keith must have risked being exposed because he truly loved Laurie. A sad and lonely Ron visited Cookie at the Marceaus', but Cookie warned him he wasn't safe from the ghost who has great powers over "the living and the dead." Cookie told Ron that the ghost had "directed" him to get the locket, but Ron slipped and said that he didn't buy the locket. When Cookie became hysterical, insisting on knowing who did get the locket, Ron was forced to admit it was a gift from Tiffany. Bill and Martha arrived home just as Cookie went into a hysterical fit and attacked Ron.

DECEMBER 9, 1971 (EPISODE # 4,079)
Tiffany worried that Keith's criminal madness would ruin Colin's political career. Geraldine broke down and collapsed into Colin's arms. Geraldine told her family that she's as guilty as Keith because she drove him to murder then helped him escape. Adam and Nicole stopped by the Fields' apartment with the grim news of Keith's death and attempted murder of Laurie. Colin promised Geraldine she won't be prosecuted as an accessory to Keith's crimes. When Geraldine stated her life is over, Gordon railed at her selfishness, claiming the rest of the family deserves to grieve, too, and Geraldine can't turn her back on her husband and other son. Colin comforted Gordon, who burst into tears. Ron called Jim with news of Cookie's hysteria. Ron feared Cookie would harm herself, while Jim promised he'd get over there as soon as possible.

Geraldine: "The house shouldn't have been here, Colin. It should have all been...rubble. Rubble and ashes. Nothing should have been left standing! But here it is. Just the way I left it today. As if nothing has altered. As if the world is the same place it was this morning."

DECEMBER 10, 1971 (EPISODE # 4,080)
Martha and Bill admitted to Ron that they deliberately kept Cookie's fascination with the occult and Kate Sloane's tricks from him. Jim arrived to take care of Cookie. Adam arrived home to find Vic on his doorstep. Vic told Adam a friend in the DA's office called about Keith's death, but Vic wanted more details. Adam gave Vic the full story about what happened at the Whitney summer estate. Vic was stunned to learn that Keith was actually old nemesis Jonah Lockwood. Adam congratulated Vic on saving Laurie, since Laurie had remembered Vic's accusation that Jonah drugged his drink. Laurie had only pretended to drink Keith's spiked wine, which gave her time to escape from the boat house. At the Marceau house, Jim suggested that Cookie remain where is and that Ron should leave. All the lights in the house suddenly went off, then the ghostly figure of a woman carrying a candle descended the stairs. Bill grabbed the "ghost" while Jim found the light switch. Everyone was astonished to see that the ghost was Cookie, who stared blankly, seemingly in a demonic trance.

DECEMBER 13, 1971 (EPISODE # 4,081)
Martha worried about Cookie, who had been asleep for thirteen hours. Bill persuaded Martha not to bother Nancy with news of Cookie, since Nancy has enough to worry about with Laurie. Ceila stopped by to keep a lunch date with Cookie and told the Marceaus that she's afraid of Cookie's obsession with spirits. Nancy told Mike that Laurie wants to get away from Monticello for a while even though Christmas is coming up soon. Mike and Nancy theorized that Laurie's resilience stems from surviving a kidnapping by Ben Travis and Eric Barrington two years earlier. Vic visited the Karrs' and was disappointed that he can't see Laurie and that she wants to go away to a tropical island soon. Martha telephoned Nancy and told her about Cookie's latest fit of hysteria. Nancy rushed over to the Marceau house. Ceila lunched with husband Fred, who listened coldly to her animated chatter. Ceila noticed when Fred took an unusually strong interest in Bill and Martha's haunted house. Fred told Ceila he knows someone who might be able to "solve" the psychic phenomena occurring at the Marceau house. Nancy was disturbed by Martha's admission that Cookie believes one of her ancestors is haunting the house. Cookie awoke and stunned Nancy and Martha by declaring herself to be "Alexandra."

NOTES: Although Martha agrees not to call Nancy, she nevertheless ignores Bill's advice and telephones her anyway. It also seems strange that Laurie would want to go away to a tropical island, considering that all of the trouble began with Keith's first murder on the Carribean island of St. Elenora!

DECEMBER 14, 1971 (EPISODE # 4,082)
Colin visited Bill, wanting to know if criminal charges would be preferred against Geraldine. Bill told Colin and Adam it wouldn't do any good to twist his arm as he had already submitted his recommendation - for or against Geraldine - to the district attorney's office. Adam told Colin that he thinks Geraldine has suffered enough. Tiffany comforted Geraldine, then apologized for not being a good daughter-in-law. Geraldine embraced Tiffany, who confessed that she really does love Geraldine like a mother. Colin was moved by witnessing Tiffany and Geraldine's reconciliation, then revealed that Bill recommended no charges should be brought against Geraldine. Nancy was relieved when Cookie awoke and responded to her name. Cookie didn't remember the incident with the candle on the stairs. Nancy told Cookie about the name "Alexandra." An elated Cookie decided that Alexandra must be the ghost's name and was delighted that Alexandra wants to possess her.

DECEMBER 15, 1971 (EPISODE # 4,083)
Adam and Nicole helped Liz and Jim trim their Christmas tree. Adam told Liz and Jim that he and Nicole are expected at the Karr house to watch Colin's press conference about Keith. Nicole and Adam were saddened to hear that Cookie has deteriorated to the point she believes herself to be possessed by the ghost of an ancestor. Nancy considered the possibility of having Cookie committed to another mental facility, but Mike tried to allay her guilt by leaving the decision to Jim. Mike and Nancy wondered if anyone in the Pollock family was actually named Alexandra. The Karrs were stunned when the family bible revealed that Nancy and Cookie's great, great grandmother was Alexandra Mansfield Pollock. Ron poured out his heart at The Raven, while the bartender poured drinks. Ron avoided the advances of a pretty girl who wanted to go home with him. Jim attempted to explain why Cookie would want to be possessed by someone else, but it was so deep everyone decided to concentrate on trimming the tree. Liz lamented the fact that Jim wouldn't allow her to use any of the Hillyer family ornaments, but Jim insisted their tree is a "Fields tree...not a Hillyer one." Liz convinced Jim to let her top the tree with a star that's been in her family for generations, then felt awful when the star fell to the floor and shattered. A messenger arrived at the Fields' door with a telegram from Italy. Liz fell sobbing into Jim's arms when the telegram revealed that Liz's father Orin and stepmother Julie had been critically injured in a plane crash.

Girl: (to Ron) "Why bother getting sober? You'll just get drunk again tomorrow. (smiles) Right?"

NOTES: This episode was pre-taped on an early 7 am cast call. The messenger in this episode was played by a then unknown actor named... John Travolta.

DECEMBER 16, 1971 (EPISODE # 4,084)
Frank grinned sardonically when he overheard Bill and Martha tell Cookie that they were leaving to watch Colin's press conference at Mike and Nancy's house. Kate begged Frank not to go through with his plan, but she couldn't dissuade him. Ceila stopped by the Marceaus' to tell them about Simon Jessup, a professional psychic researcher and acquaintance of her husband Fred. Bill and Martha told Ceila they'd be glad to meet Fred, but nixed the idea of bringing a "ghost-breaker" into the house. Mike telephoned Nancy from the office to say that Laurie's safely on a flight to the Caribbean. Nancy was saddened when Nicole and Adam arrived with news of Orin and Julie Hillyer's accident. After Bill and Martha left their house, Frank ordered Kate to put on "Alexandra's dress."

DECEMBER 17, 1971 (EPISODE # 4,085)
Colin told Tiffany and Ron that his parents couldn't bear to attend the press conference, but Geraldine and Gordon shocked everyone with their arrival. Colin, who had rejected Ron's prepared speech for one of his own, kept everyone on tenterhooks as to whether or not he'd announce his resignation from the senate. Mike revealed to Vic that Laurie is vacationing on the island of St. Martin. Vic was touched by Mike's insistence that Vic spend Christmas Day with the Karrs. While discussing the Hillyer plane crash, Nancy begged a glum Adam not to speak of Julie in the past tense. Nancy worried when Martha mentioned Cookie taking sleeping pills, but Bill pooh-poohed Nancy's fear of a suicide attempt. Nancy told the Marceaus that she's considering having Cookie committed again. Colin gave a moving speech about the tragedy of mental illness and how it affects society, then vowed he'd work to help the mentally ill as a private citizen or politician... a decision he'd leave to voters. The Karrs and Marceuas were impressed by Colin's speech, which had a particular significance to Nancy. At the Marceau house, Cookie awoke to find "Alexandra" in her room. Kate, as Alexandra, carried a flickering candle and beckoned Cookie to come with her. Cookie followed Kate to the top of the staircase, where Frank hid in the shadows. Frank, with eyes blazing, raised his crutch over his head and prepared to strike Cookie, sending her headlong down the stairs.

Colin: (in televised speech) "The security and progress of this country, the future of our people, has only one starting place. The human mind. So now I take a different vow. To serve my country by serving our most valuable resource... the mental well being of our citizens. This is what I plan to do with my future. Whether as a private citizen... or a Senator of the United States. And that decision I leave to the people." (COLIN'S EXIT LINE).

NOTES: Nicole commented that she heard Adam's name for the first time during Julie Hillyer's trial for the murder of Harry Constable. This was the final appearance of the Whitney family. Although Geraldine and Tiffany would return in November 1973, Colin and Gordon would never be seen by viewers again.

DECEMBER 20, 1971 (EPISODE # 4,086)
Fred and Ceila arrived, just as Frank was ready to hurtle Cookie down the stairs. Cookie told Fred and Ceila about Alexandra's appearance, then became angry when Fred suggested Simon Jessup get rid of the spirit. Nancy told Mike about the Hillyer plane crash. Mike suspected it must have upset Adam, since he fought so hard to save Julie from a death sentence in the Harry Constable murder. Nancy telephoned the Fields' and tried to comfort Liz, who feared that Orin's attorney is keeping bad news from her. Bill and Martha arrived home and stated emphatically that they don't need Simon Jessup's help, since the house isn't really haunted. After emphasizing that Jessup doesn't charge a fee for his psychic research, Fred persuaded the Marceaus' to at least consider meeting with Jessup. Cookie became hysterical again at the thought of Jessup exorcising the ghost.

DECEMBER 21, 1971 (EPISODE # 4,087)
Bill told Jim about Fred and Ceila Burns and their offer of involving psychic researcher Simon Jessup. Jim theorized that if Jessup "exorcizes" the ghost, it might actually help Cookie by convincing her the spirits are gone. Adam and Nicole watched a news broadcast which indicated 90% of voters are in favor of Colin Whitney continuing in political office. Ron stopped by Adam's office to enquire about divorce proceedings. When Adam wanted to know if Ron really wants the divorce, Ron assured him that he wants a normal life with a normal wife. Jim convinced Bill and Martha to meet with Simon Jessup, though Bill was still reluctant. Ceila arranged to have Jessup visit the Marceau's that evening. Jim broke the news about Orin and Julie to Bill and Martha. Later, at home, Jim and Liz received another telegram and learned that Julie had died. An upset Liz insisted on flying to Milan immediately.

Nicole left the table in tears over Ron's depression and the thought of marriage.

DECEMBER 23, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,089)
Cookie waited anxiously for the arrival of the Burnses and Simon Jessup. Cookie told Bill and Martha she's convinced the spirit is her great grandmother Alexandra Pollock. Cookie refused to meet with Jessup, whom she fears will drive Alexandra away. Bill was skeptical of Jessup, despite Jessup's assurance that he uses scientific methods and has no pre-disposition about the presence of spirits. After Ron's visit, Nicole talked marriage, but Vic interupted the moment as Adam tried desperately to avoid the discussion. Vic told Adam and Nicole that Laurie is safely tucked away on St. Martin. Jessup assurance that he can detect false encounters with the supernatural didn't sit well with Frank and Kate. Cookie attempted to stop Jessup, who stated the evil spirit of Frank Sloane might be present. Martha believed Jessup when he felt a "cold spot" in the living room.

Adam: I still think you should have that after-dinner drink. It can't be more of a depressant than Ron was.

Kate: (about Jessup) Frank, he's right you know. What he says is true...about this house!
Frank: Would you shut up! I'm trying to hear this screwball...

DECEMBER 24, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,090)
After thinking about it, Cookie hoped Jessup is genuine so that he can make Alexandra appear again. Frank plotted to harm Cookie and insisted Kate dress as Alexandra to do it. Bill counseld Adam that he and Nicole may be getting serious about one another if they can things important enough to fight about. Frank overheard Martha's phone call to Bill, who said he wouldn't be home until very late. Bill agreed with Adam about not publicizing Charles Weldon's embezzlement from Geraldine. Bill jokingly invited Adam and Nicole to Simon Jessup's seance. Cookie awoke when Kate, dressed as Alexandra, entered the room with a candle. Kate spoke to Cookie in sepulchral tones, instructing her to swallow the bottle of sleeping pills. Cookie obeyed, thinking she'd be able to join Alexandra in peaceful eternity. Bill caught Kate sneaking out of Cookie's room.

Adam: (on phone to Nicole) I was just talking to Bill, and he's thinking of having a seance at his house...
Nicole: Have you two been drinking?

NOTE: This episode was pre-recorded.

DECEMBER 27, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,091)
Frank flinched when Bill asked if Kate had help in getting in and out of the house, but Kate claimed the spirit was guiding her to get the house back. Bill refused to listen to Kate's pleas about letting her go. Adam admitted to Vic that he's avoided marriage because his own mother was so desperately unhappy. Vic convinced himself to propose to Laurie the minute she returns from St. Martin. Ron informed Mike and Nancy that he plans to resign as Colin's press agent. Nancy realized Ron has lost interest in everything because of Cookie. Before officers took her away, Kate told everyone that Cookie didn't look right, and there's an empty pill bottle by the bed. Martha ran to Cookie's side and screamed that Cookie killed herself.

Bill phoned Jim, who revealed the pills were too mild to be toxic. Mike, Ron, and Nancy arrived at the Marceaus. Everyone speculated about whether or not Cookie took the pills with the intention of ending her life. Cookie had hysterics when Bill told her he caught Kate snaeking out of her room, dressed as Alexandra. Cookie was forced to face the truth when confronted with the locket Kate had stolen.

DECEMBER 29, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,093)
To avoid an accusation of bias, Bill convinced Adam to serve as Kate's public defender. Kate insisted she was soley responsible for the Laughing Woman, though Bill still thought it was the result of a recording device. Jim told Mike and Nancy he doesn't think Cookie attempted suicide, but added it's probably best to leave her at the Marceaus as removing her would be viewed a rejection. Jim was speechless when Liz phoned to say she wants to bring Orin back to Monticello to recuperate.

Nicole: The Clarence Darrow of Monticello has just arranged to represent Kate Sloane. What do you think of that?

DECEMBER 30, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,094)
Ron told a sleeping Cookie he'll give her freedom no matter how much it hurts him. Martha dismissed Simon Jessup after telling him about Kate's capture, but Jessup insisted spirits might still be at work inside the house. Jessup subtly appealed to Martha's hidden curiosity about psychic phenomena. Ron joined a depressed Nicole for lunch and they comiserated about doomed relationships. Adam was slightly jealous to see Nicole and Ron laughing together. A hysterical Cookie prevented Jessup from leaving. DECEMBER 31, 1971 (EPISODE# 4,095)
Adam warned Bill he'll fight for a reduced sentence for Kate, then Bill agreed to drop the larcency charge. Bill informed Adam they're going through with the seance tonight in hopes it will convince Cookie the house isn't haunted. Fred Burns became curiously testy when Celia insisted Kate Sloane was singularly responsible for the haunting. In the secret room, Frank bemoaned the fact he's running out of food and liquor while Kate's in jail. Jessup countered Martha's skepticism about the seance with the idea of New Year's Eve being the end and beginning of something new...just like life and death. As the seance got underway, Bill was incredulous, Martha and Celia frightened, Frank indifferent, and Cookie hopeful. Everyone was astonished when a light appeared in the darkness as Jessup implored the spirit to show itself. Cookie fell to her knees, laughed demonically, and claimed to be the spirit of Alexandra Pollock.

Nicole: I feel I was wrong, to start pressing the issue of marriage, when you made it perfectly clear to me once that...you're not the marrying kind.
Adam: I guess I said something to that effect.
Nicole: And I accepted that. If I didn't want to play by your rules, I didn't have to play at all. Nobody forced me, right?
Adam: Yes...that's right.
Nicole: Well, then it just seems like common sense not to complain about it.
Adam: Seems to me that you're being just a little too sensible tonight...
Nicole: A woman can't be TOO sensible. We still haven't made that toast.
Adam: Maybe you better make it.
Nicole: All right...I will. Here's to...New Year's resolutions.
Adam: What resolutions?
Nicole: (Sipping champagne) Mmm. It's very good, isn't it?
Adam: Whose New Year's resolutions are you talking about?
Nicole: Mine.
Adam: Well, what is it?
Nicole: I'm sorry. I can't tell you. It's like telling your wish. If you do, it won't come true, everybody knows that.
Adam: Does this New Year's resolution have something to do with us?
Nicole: Everything to do with us, Mr. Drake.
