In her room at the Lakeview Inn, Lyn Warren stands in shock as Emory steps through the window. He smiles at her reassuringly. She looks at the phone then back at him as her voice quivers, "Em - Emory --!! B-but you just phoned me - n-not ten minutes ago! You said you were in Monticello!" In order to cut through her shock, Emory firmly tells her to take a deep breath and settle down. He extends his hand and tells her to feel it - flesh and blood. He moves to her and kisses her but she doesn't respond - however, she is more relaxed after touching him. He tells her, "I tried to reach you at home - but when I found you drove up her tonight I got worried, so I followed you." Lyn asks him how he got out of the hospital and in a deprecating tone he tells her that since his "so-called" heart attack turned out not to be, they couldn't hold him. She asks him why, when she spoke with him on the phone, he told her he was in the hospital and not Lakeview he responds, "Sweetie, I didn't tell you I was here because I had to see what was going on. You talk to Grimsley again?" Lyn responds no and Emory shivers. He tells her he had a cold drive and asks for a drink. She says she can order him one and he smiles and says, "Just one brandy - and make it a double. Then you and I'll get down to business, okay?"

SCENE 1A
At the same time, in the Capice living room, Phil is speaking on the phone to Oakley Reynolds. Louise comes downstairs and enters the room. She hears Phil say, "Lakeview," in a questioning tone. He tells Oakley not to send anybody up to there as they already have someone in Lakeview - Mr. Grimsley. He says he'll try to get in touch with him and breaks the connection. As he dials the operator he tells Louise that Oakley's men lost Mrs. Warren but they think she headed toward Lakeview. He then speaks into the phone, telling the operator he wants to speak person-to-person to Mr. Grimsley at the Lakeview Inn in Lakeview. Louise asks him about Emory and Phil tells her that Emory's still in the hospital in Monticello. He speculates that Grimsley is engineering that real estate deal in Lakeview to keep the Warren's from taking off for Mexico and that if Lyn is on her way up there, it may be working.

SCENE 1B
In the lobby of the Lakeview Inn, Freddy is on the phone while Mrs. Hubbell is descending the stairs carrying her knitting. He nods to her, "Evening Mrs. Hubbell." Mrs. Hubbell nods curtly stating, "It's not warm enough to sit in my room. See you got plenty of heat down here, though." She plops into a lobby chair and gets out her knitting. Sully comes past the desk carrying a tray with a single glass of brandy on it. Freddy sees Sully and gestures for him to stop. Into the phone he says, "The telephone in Mr. Grimsley's suite is out of order. I'll have to send up for him." He hangs up, turns to Sully and asks him to run up and get Mr. Grimsley. With a pained expression Sully jerks his thumb toward Lyn's door and says, "She just called down for a nightcap." Freddy tells him to get Mr. Grimsley first; he has a long distance call. Sighing, Sully puts down the tray and starts to turn away. Glancing upward he sees the door to Grimsley's suite open. He smiles and says to Freddy, "Looks to me like he's starting down that hall again! And I'll give odds where he's heading!" Freddy tells him to go and tell Mr. Grimsley that he's got a phone call. Sully says, "Okay, but he's not gonna like it. You can be he'd rather talk to her than talk on the telephone!"SCENE 2A
In Lyn's room Emory, still wearing his coat, looks through a slit in the blinds. He comments that it's not snowing, but the wind's picking up. Wryly thanking him for the weather report, Lyn tells him it's not exactly what she wants to know. She tells him she's got a thousand things to ask him - such as, why he came through the window instead of the door. Grunting, Emory asks her what's taking so long for his drink. Lyn reminds him that they're at the Lakeview - not the best hotel, but the coldest - and tells him he might warm up faster if he took off his coat. When Emory comments that maybe a Saint Bernard is bringing the drink, Lyn tells him the bellboy isn't exactly a ball of fire. Emory asks her if she means Sully, Sully Sullivan. With a puzzled look Lyn asks him how he knew and he reminds her that he used to live in Lakeview and knew his way around "this old barn." As he puts his coat in the closet he smiles and tells her that's how he knew to come the back way - in the dark without being seen.
Again Lyn asks him why he did that - instead of coming in the front door and up to her room. Emory tells her he wanted to find out what was going on. She says, "I told you. I told you when you called with that song and dance about being in the hospital." Deliberately he says she may have told him, but he had to see for himself. Softy Lyn says she wishes he hadn't said that; she feels as if he slapped her in the face. Emory's mouth smiles, but his eyes don't as he says, "Aw - I didn't leave a mark on you." As Lyn shakily tells him she wouldn't lie to him, Emory unsmiling, says, "No?" Desperate, Lyn tells him, "Oh, all right, all right! I lied to you about the baby! I told you she was mine when she wasn't - but I had to lie to you about her! I lied about her because of you." With a faint smile, Emory says, "So it's all my fault." There's a tap on the door and Emory says, "I guess that's my drink finally." He starts moving toward the bathroom and tells Lyn to wait until he's in there before she opens the door. He disappears into the bathroom and Lyn shivers as if she experienced a sudden chill.
She goes to the door and opens it for Sully, who has a tray bearing two drinks of brandy. Lyn glances at the tray and says, "I told you to bring one." With a wise look Sully says, "Well - since you're going to have company, I saved myself a trip." With a questioning look Lyn says, "Company?" Sully tells her that Mr. Grimsley was on his way when a phone call sidetracked him but he's sure that it won't hold him up for more than just a minute. He smiles and leaves, closing the door behind him. As soon as the door is closed, Emory emerges from the bathroom and looks directly at Lyn. Saying he heard what Sully said, Lyn tells him the bellboy must be mistaken. Holding up his hand, Emory tells her they'll get the misunderstanding cleared up, but not now - not with Grimsley on his way to her room. He reaches for his brandy and tells her they'll clear things up after Grimsley has been - and gone. He tells her to get rid of him fast.
SCENE 2B
In the hotel lobby, Winston is off to one side with the house phone. Fred is working at the switchboard and Mrs. Hubbell is sitting, placidly doing her knitting. Fred tells Grimsley that he's gotten the operator back and Winston turns to the phone. Phil, on the other end, tells him they've had a development he ought to know about and then asks Winston if he's somewhere he can talk. Winston says he's at the switchboard and Phil says, "I understand." Phil tells him "the woman" visited her husband in the hospital this evening - went home - and a little while later drove away. They weren't geared to follow her in her car but think she headed toward Lakeview. Grimsley tells him she did. Phil then asks him if he's seen her and Winston tells him he has - and will again. In the background Freddy is eavesdropping as much as he can. Grimsley glances at him then carefully tells Phil, "Let me put it this way, Philip, things have not gone quite as I could have hoped. But it isn't over yet and I still think I've got a chance of getting what I came for. You may hear from me later." He hangs up, glances in the direction of Lyn's room and starts stalking toward it.

SCENE 3
In Lyn's room Emory is leaning against the doorjamb of the bathroom door, sipping his brandy. Lyn is at her dressing table, growing more apprehensive by the minute as she combs her hair. The sound of a wooden shutter bangs and Lyn jumps and puts her comb down with a clatter. Emory smiles and says, "I told you the wind is picking up." Turning to him Lyn says, "I don't like the way you lied to me about being in the hospital - or the way you sneaked in here." In a mild tone Emory tells her there's a lot of things he doesn't like, and he's there to make some changes. Lyn then asks him if he'll leave her room the way he came in and then come in through the front door - as her husband. If Mr. Grimsley is coming to talk, he can talk to both of them. Emory tells her he likes it "this way", as there is a tap on the door. He steps into the bathroom and Lyn forces herself to go to the door and open it.
Winston is at the door and in an understated, and shaky, tone Lyn says, "Mr. Grimsley, I don't want to talk to you any more. Didn't you get my note?" Winston says, "I did, but…" and stops as Lyn tells him they have nothing more to say to each other. "All I want you to do is leave me alone," she says in a pleading tone. She puts out her hand to push him away from the door and her weak shove puts her off balance and she clutches his coat for a moment. Grimsley is watching her closely and appears to mean it when he asks, "Mrs. Warren, are you all right?" Still shaken Lyn says, "Yes! Or I will be if you'll leave me alone." Looking at her and nodding, Grimsley says that perhaps she'll feel like talking in the morning. Reminding her that "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush," he turns and walks away. Lyn closes the door, leans against it weakly, and now realizes that when she pushed Mr. Grimsley one of his buttons came off in her hand. She looks at it and absently picks at a few threads looped through the buttonhole.
Emory steps into the bedroom and asks her what Grimsley meant by a bird in the hand. Lyn tells him that's what she wanted to tell him. She and Mr. Grimsley did talk earlier; he knows what they expect to do when they get to Mexico - that they'll jack up the price once they get the baby out of the country. Grimsley will deal now. Wisely Emory says, "So he wants to make the deal now for half a million?" He than asks Lyn if she would make the deal without twisting a noose around his neck. When he doesn't get much of a response Emory tells her they don't need to talk any more. It's time for him to get out of there. Still watching her he goes toward the closet as she feels a stab of fear. Her hand clenches the button.

SCENE 4A
In the Capice living room Phil is dialing the phone as Louise enters. He asks her if she reached Mike on the other phone. Louise tells him Nancy said he's still tied up, so she gave her the message. He tells Louise he's trying to reach Oakley. Speaking into the phone he tells Oakley there's no reason to send anyone to Lakeview - Mr. Grimsley's trying to reach an agreement with Mrs. Warren and he doesn't need help right now. Phil hangs up and looks soberly at Louise telling her all they can do is wait and see what develops. He goes to her and puts his arms around her. They cling to each other as Louise says to Phil, "Thank God for you, my darling."
SCENE 4B
In Lyn's room Emory is putting on his coat. Lyn watches him with a strange and disturbed expression. The shutter outside bangs and she gives a little shudder. "Every time that shutter bangs I almost jump out of my skin." She looks at the button in her hand and shows it to Emory telling him she was so anxious to do what he told her she almost shoved Mr. Grimsley out the door. She then asks him where she should meet him and he looks at her questioningly. He tells her it's time for them to say goodbye and with an uncertain smile Lyn says, "You make it sound so - so final."
She goes to the dressing table, still with the button in her hand, and picks up her comb. She runs it through her hair a time or two and then turns to face Emory. "Em, would you stop that? You've been looking at me - like that - ever since you got here." Emory leans over and picks up the brandy glass he was holding. He holds it to the light and shakes his head. Then taking out his handkerchief he polishes the glass briefly as he tells her the Lakeview Inn hasn't changed a bit. The glass is all smeary. He puts the glass down and tells her to pour the rest of the brandy - he has a long, cold drive ahead of him. She looks at him baffled, and a little fearful, then asks him, "Is it final?" She finishes pouring the brandy and takes the glass to him. By now Emory has his gloves on and takes the glass in his gloved hand. Nervously she tells him that maybe she was wrong to ask for the letter (stating he knew the baby didn't belong to her). She starts to drift around the room, edging toward the door, saying she felt she had to protect herself because of Carol Kramer. As she drifts toward the door Emory moves smoothly and quietly to interpose himself between her and the door.
He finishes the brandy and puts the glass down. He looks at her and tells her she should have told him the truth about the baby - instead of making him worm it out of Sam Haven. His tone is soft, but he grits his teeth as he says, "Lyn, you haven't trusted me from the beginning." She looks at him a beat then blurts out, "I don't now! I don't like the way you're looking at me; I don't like the way you're acting now!" She shakes her head and tells him not to forget about Sam Haven. Sam knows the truth about the baby - so any crazy ideas about leaving her out are not going to work. Emory looks at her with a very small, very cold smile. He reaches into his coat pocket and slowly extracts a silk scarf, telling her to forget about Sam Haven. Lyn watches him, baited, as Emory says, "He's gone. Dead and gone." He tells her that Sam won't make trouble for anybody on the bottom of that river. Lyn catches her breath and puts the back of her hand to her mouth.

SCENE 5A
In a shaky whisper Lyn says, "Dead --? Sam?" Emory nods his head and says that Sam was a problem - a complication - but after he told Emory how to get in and out of the hospital without being seen he wasn't needed any more. Lyn makes a strangled sound of fear as Emory tells her Sam outlived his usefulness - so Sam isn't living any more. The elemental strength in this woman makes her fight back in spite of her terror as she says, "You need me! And don't you ever forget it!" Emory shakes his head as he takes a step toward Lyn. She says, "Oh, yes you do! I'm that baby's mother - the court said I'm the baby's mother. And I've got custody!" Taking another step toward her, Emory tells her that he's her husband and has an application in the works. They're going to name him the legal father of the child she fooled everyone into believing was hers. "Now I don't need you any more, sweetie. You've outlived your usefulness, too."
Lyn takes desperate action in these, the final moments of her life. She looks toward the rear window, her eyes widen and she speaks, as if to someone coming through that window, "Look out! Don't! Don't hurt him!" Emory whirls to face the unseen danger she made him think was behind him as Lyn breaks the bonds of her terror and darts to the door. She flings it open.
SCENE 5B
In a blind storm of fear Lyn runs into the corridor outside her room as Mr. Grimsley comes around the corner. She turns and looks back into the room. Emory takes a step toward her and she recoils. She backs into the railing, which gives way. She goes through the railing and over the edge of the mezzanine floor as her shriek ricochets through the old lobby. Not seeing Emory, Mr. Grimsley hurries to the edge of the broken railing. Emory backs away from the doorway and starts toward the bedroom window.
