Act One
Miles and Dr. Stern have just informed Draper that April has miscarried her baby. He is silent for a moment, sad and disappointed. He quietly asks how April responded to the bad news. Miles says that April doesn't know yet. They gave her a sedative, and she hasn't been conscious long enough to talk to her. Dr. Stern states that the sedative is wearing off. April is regaining consciousness and can be told soon. Tree remarks that they'll have to do it; it's the first thing April will ask. Miles offers to break the news to his sister, but Draper insists he wants to be the one to tell her. After all, she's his wife, and the child she lost was his baby.

ACT TWO
Scene One
Miles thanks Dr. Stern for his assistance, adding that he hopes he can take over from this point on. Dr. Stern states that he needs to get back to the hospital in Monticello. He give his condolences to Draper, reminding him that he is available to talk and answer any questions he or April might have. Draper stares off into space, deep in thought. He's unable to think of anything but the ordeal ahead of him. He softly thanks Dr. Stern, who leaves. Draper becomes agitated again, wanting to know how April could have fallen. Miles admits that it had something to do with Denise. Tree continues the story, adding that she was preparing lunch and heard Denise and April quarreling. Their voices sounded very angry so she came into the hallway to see what was happening. Tree has a flashback to the incident. She sees April and Denise arguing at the top of the stairs. Tree explains that Denise was clutching April, and April pulled away suddenly then tumbled down the stairs. Miles asks what they quarreling about. Denise is terminally ill and has nothing left to argue about. Draper demands to know where Denise is. Miles reports that she was sick, too, and needed a sedative. She's upstairs in bed. Tree confesses that Denise refused to take the sedative, so Miles instructs her to see Denise and force her to take it. They have enough problems as it is. Tree leaves the room. Miles admits to Draper that he was afraid something like this was going to happen because of the friction between April and Denise. Draper remarks that there's probably more friction between them than anyone will ever know. Miles theorizes that April went to see Denise to complain about the restrictions she had placed on Miles -to not see Nicole. They had words that became increasingly angry. Draper wonders why April would rush away from Denise in such a hurry. Miles doesn't know, nor does know why Denise was clutching April before she fell. Miles says that's obvioulsy how the accident happened, though: April wrenched away from Denise and the sudden movement caused her to lose her balance and fall down the stairs. It wasn't Denise's fault. It was just as Tree saw it. Draper sarcastically retorts that he knows what Tree said. He leaves to see April.
Scene Two
Draper enters April's room. She is resting comfortably and a bit woozy from the medication she has been given. She smiles at the sight of Draper. He tells her she had a bad fall. She says that she heard someone -maybe Tree- say that she didn't break any bones. Draper reassures her that she's okay. There was carpeting on the stairs, and that helped protect her when she fell. April raises a hand to her forehead, telling him that she has a headache. Draper informs her that it's probably the sedative she was given. She was pretty shaken up in the fall, but she'll be okay. Miles says so, and after all, April thinks that Miles is the best doctor in the world. April vaguely remembers seeing Miles and adds that there was another doctor with him. Draper tells her that Miles wanted a second opinion in case they needed to take her to the hospital. April says that she doesn't want to be hospitalized. Draper replies that she doesn't need to be in the hospital. She can recuperate right there in her own bed. April becomes upset, declaring that she doesn't want to be in the same house with Denise. She confesses that she finally overheard the truth. She wanted to tell him, but he was already asleep, and when she awoke that morning, he had already left for Monticello. Draper says that he wanted to talk, too. April explains that she eavesdropped on Denise and Gus, who were talking about their sordid plot against Miles. She went to confront Denise with the truth, and that's why Denise tried to kill her...

ACT THREE
Draper assures April that Denise didn't try to kill her. It was an accident...Tree told them. April insists that Tree wasn't there, and begs Draper to listen to her. She knows that she sounds funny -her words aren't coming out right. Draper says that it's the medication. It isn't allowing her to think clearly. April promises him that there's nothing wrong with her memory. She is thinking straight and recalls every word she heard. Draper attempts to calm her, suggesting that they talk about it later. April becomes very emotional, demanding they talk now. She wants to see Miles and tell him the truth. Draper reveals that Miles is with Denise now. His admission makes April even more upset. She declares that Denise will lie to him; she'll tell him that April was hysterical and didn't hear what she thought she did. April reveals that she heard Denise thanking Gus for faking the laboratory reports that fooled Miles into believing she's terminally ill. April assures Draper that it's true, and Denise isn't really dying. He asks if she's sure about what she heard. April becomes increasingly emotional as she explains how she confronted Denise with what she heard. April says that Denise believed her. She knew that April would convince Miles of the truth this time. That's why Denise followed her to the top of the stairs and pushed her down. She wanted April dead the same way that she wanted Cathryn Dane and Charlie Richmond dead. Draper begs April to calm down. She apologizes for being so hysterical. She agrees that she must stay calm for the sake of the baby. Draper looks at her sadly, unable to respond. He nervously says that he's going to go get Miles. April pleads with him to stay with her, but he turns away. She asks him to look at her; she realizes something is wrong -there's something he hasn't told her. Draper tries to tell her the news but admits that he can't. He thought he could do it, but he just can't. April recalls that the other doctor with Miles was Dr. Stern. Yes, it was, Draper solemnly confesses. April states dispassionately that she lost the baby. She knows it. And, she knows that it would have been a boy. Draper softly reassures her that they'll have another baby. He got so used to the idea of being a father. April replies that she was used to the idea, too. She had already fallen in love with the baby, and now he's dead. Denise killed him...ACT FOUR
Scene One
Monticello General Hospital.
Mike and Nancy are in an examining room. Dr. Connolly enters the room with Dr. Lacey. Dr. Connolly tells Mike that he took the liberty of inviting his personal physician and hopes it's okay. They all exchange plesantries. Mike says that it's always nice to see Dr. Lacey. In fact, there's nothing he'd like better than to actually see Dr. Lacey. Mike admits that he'll be glad to get the bandages off his eyes. Nancy asks if he'll still have to wear the bandages afterward. Dr. Connolly says no, though Mike probably would benefit from using a pair of dark glasses, because the last examination indicated a strong light presence. If Mike's eyesight has returned, light could be painful for some time. Dr. Lacey closes the blinds to darken the room. While Dr. Connolly slowly removes the bandages from Mike's eyes, Dr. Lacey comments that he heard Ben Everett's editorial on WMON. Nancy retorts that she wishes he hadn't given it. Dr. Lacey counters that it was actually a great tribute to Mike, but Mike explains that Nancy is upset with the way Ben concluded the editorial -suggesting Mike remain chairman of the Crime Commission. Dr. Lacey says that he did recall the mention of honorary chairmanship. Mike replies that he doesn't want that. There's no reason a man with poor eyesight can't do anything he wants... short of brain surgery. Dr. Connolly finishes the removal of bandages and asks if Mike is ready. Mike slowly opens his eyes and attempts to focus. He says that there doesn't seem to be much light presence. Dr. Connolly responds that it's because the room is dark. They open the blinds to allow more light into the room. Mike continues to focus, but he can't see anything. Nancy softly reassures him that perhaps it just takes time. Mike says that he's sure it takes time, but there is cynicism and disappointment in his voice.

Scene Two
The Norwood home in Mayfield.
Draper and Miles are alone. Draper says that April is sleeping now. The sedative finally knocked her out. Miles asks if Draper told her about the miscarriage. Draper admits that it was difficult; he almost couldn't tell her. Miles states that he should have gone with Draper. He's April's brother and a doctor... he's supposed to be more accustomed to breaking bad news. Draper reveals that April didn't cry. She just said things about Denise. Miles wants to know if April blames Denise for what happened. Draper avoids the question, suggesting Miles speak with her himself when she awakens. Tree appears and tells them that Denise claimed she took the sedative, but Tree isn't sure she actually did. Tree reasons that she'll have to start standing over Denise to ensure that she takes her medication as directed. Miles says that he should probably go to her. He asks Tree if Denise wanted to see him, but she states that Denise didn't seem concerned about anyone but April. Miles remarks that at least Denise isn't just thinking about herself.

Draper responds that she feels more than that... she thinks that Denise actually killed their baby.

Scene Two
Denise enters April's bedroom and hovers over her sleeping form. She removes a pillow from the chair and walks over to the bed. Looking down at her victim, she quietly thinks to herself that April hasn't told Miles the truth yet. She's been too busy to say anything. "And now... you're going to be too dead," Denise declares ominously as she raises the pillow above April's head.
