ACT 1

Scene 1

Cookie Thomas and Geri Pollock discuss Martha Marceau's trial for the murder of Rick Oliver. Cookie says that Martha has a chance that she didn't have before Mrs. Hillyer testified and at least the jury has some indication that she might be telling the truth. Cookie says that the DA didn't shake up Martha and she was wonderful. Also Pete Quinn tried to imply that not only did Rick Oliver have a thing for Mrs. Hillyer, but she had a thing for Oliver. Quinn was trying to make Laura Hillyer look bad but got nowhere because he should have realized that nobody would believe that a woman like Mrs. Hillyer would possibly go for a guy like Rick Oliver. Geri says that she is not sure. Obviously referring to her own situation she says that people are always going to ask, "what does she see in him?" Cookie thinks that Geri is talking about her marriage to Lee but Geri says that it is over. She is referring to someone else. "He is not glamorous like an architect or newspaperman, just a plain ordinary American middle class businessman" she explains.

Scene 2

"What a pity it is Mr. Crawford." Vera Turek tells the man. She's been studying him as he works there and there is nothing about him that suggests that he is nothing but an average American middle class businessman. He says that's all he wants to look like. Turek says that's all he should look like "to carry out the work we are engaged in successfully. The less conspicuous you are the better". Crawford asks what is so regrettable about that. "Your reluctance to do the work," admonishes Turek. "You've all the qualifications to make an excellent agent. One can not help but wish that you were a more willing one," she answers.

Harry Kramer: The Edge of Night is brought to you by Thrill.

ACT 2
Scene 1
Peter Quinn's house

Quinn and his assistant, Linc are having coffee and discussing the Marceau trial. Linc thinks that Mike Karr pulled a fast one when Laura Hillyer spilled her story during Karr's cross-examination and not on direct. Quinn says that he understands because the Hillyers are on Martha's side and must have known instinctively that their story would help Martha's case. Linc asks if Pete would have gone to trial if the Hillyers had come to him instead with the story that Rick Oliver had been making a play for Mrs. Hillyer and Hillyer(Orin) told him to get lost and Oliver was in the depressed state that Martha said he was in. Pete sees that Linc is trying to find out if he still thinks that Martha is guilty and answers "The answer is… yes I do. No doubts that I do. I'm not interested in Oliver's mood when he died. I'm interested in Martha's. And why she was ready to commit murder." Quinn says that Laura Hillyer's testimony didn't change a thing for him but says that the jury is another matter all together. He says that they have got to shake up the jury. They've got to drop their own bombshell. Pete decided to put Phoebe Smith on the stand because she is itching to testify. "She's got more on Martha than all our witnesses put together" Linc says. Pete makes a phone call.

Scene 2
The Hillyer foyer

A phone rings and the butler answers "Hillyer residence." He identifies himself as the butler Maynard. Quinn wants to speak to Phoebe but Maynard informs him that she is out and has no idea of when she would return. Quinn leaves a message for Phoebe saying to report to court in the morning when court convenes.

Scene 3
Back seat of a car

Phoebe Smith is bound and gagged in the back seat of a car while her captor, David Gideon is on the phone in a booth talking to the operator. He is trying to get the number for the Monticello Youth Center but is told that it is closed down. "Thank you. That is all I need to know," Gideon says as he hangs up and returns to the car.

ACT 3
Scene 1

Cookie tells Geri that Lee knew the way that Geri feels about Clint Crawford. Geri says that he couldn't have known because she didn't tell him anything except that it was none of his business. Cookie says that Lee thinks that Geri is in love with Clint. Geri says that since Lee gave her nothing but headaches and heartaches, she has had it with love and that hasn't changed since she met Clint. She explains that she was born without a rudder or pilot wheel "or whatever people steer themselves with". She has been sort of drifting and floating around and wants someone that she could anchor herself to. She says that Clint is "strong, reliable, and has got his feet planted firmly on the ground. He could be my anchor any time he wants to be."

Scene 2

Vera lights a cigarette for Mr. Crawford and gives him the lighter "as a gift from me." "Since when do you give me presents?" he asks. She says that she's had the lighter to give him since she came to Monticello. "It's no ordinary lighter, Mr. Crawford" she explains. "It looks like one, acts like one, but has a far more important function" she says as she picks up the lighter to show him.

ACT 4

The lighter is opened in such a way to see that there is a tiny camera inside. "For microfilm," Mrs. Turek says. "The techniques for micro photography has greatly advanced in recent years, not only I might add by your people". She continues that it works outdoors as well as indoors, "like the interior of the offices of the Monticello Electric Company." It can be carried around with out being noticed or examined, but a man who carries a lighter and still uses matches might be suspect. "It is a gift from me and my friends with our compliments," Turek added. "You mean orders to photograph the project of Monticello Electro," Crawford says.
"Project 'R' ,of course" Turek stipulates.
Crawford says that she thinks that little gadgets could solve all problems. "It doesn't. The equipment is always adequate, but what your people always leave out is the human element."
"You mean your reluctance to comply with our orders?" she asks.
"Yeah. That"
"We have means of making you comply!" Turek threatens.
Crawford says that there are unpredictable problems. "Though I do have access to the project, there is no guarantee that I can photograph it. Anybody can walk in."
"It is part of your assignment to see that somebody does not walk in," she retorts.
"It might be easier if I had some help," suggests Crawford. You said that you have another agent planted in Monticello Electro. It might be easier if I knew who he was."
"It is better that you DON'T!" she insists.
"I see. I am trustworthy enough to do a dangerous job like this but I cannot know the name of my own accomplice."
Turek answers,"If you were caught doing the job, you might betray the name. There is no point losing 2 agents. Now, the camera is loaded and ready for use. You will take it and use it at the first possible moment. You will photograph Project 'R'. You will carry the lighter safely past the security guard. You will give me the cassette of microfilm. There your assignment ends."
"And you take care of the drop?"
"That is part of my assignment," she responds.

Crawford says,"I hope you thought of another way of doing it other than the last time we talked."
"It still seems feasible" Mrs. Turek answers. "That is if Mrs. Pollock does decide to get a Mexican divorce."
"It is NOT feasible!" declares Crawford "because I won't have it Mrs. Turek! I won't have Geri involved. I warned you!"
"YOU warn ME Mr. Crawford?" balks Turek. Are you really in a position to do that?"
Crawford asks why she couldn't do the drop via mail and she explains that she is not equipped to reduce the film to microdot. So a courier is necessary. It is convenient to have Geri do it as she will be going to Mexico for a divorce.
Crawford says they are not sure Geri will go to Mexico. Turek suggests that other arrangements will be made in that case.
"Make those arrangements whether Geri goes or not!" orders Crawford..
"I'm sorry Mr. Crawford."
"Why make it impossible for me to cooperate with you?" he asks.
"That is not what I am doing."
"You think that there isn't any limit to how far I can be pushed?" Crawford cautions.
"There may be a limit, yes. But I don't think that you will be willing to expose your past to safeguard Mrs. Pollock's future!"

Harry Kramer: Our story continues after this message.

ACT 5
Scene 1
Hillyer foyer

Liz Hillyer comes down stairs and asks Maynard to leave light on for Phoebe. Liz is worried because they have an English test in the morning and Phoebe did not say where she was going. Maynard tells her about Quinn's message and they talk about how Phoebe is eager to testify against Mrs. Marceau. Liz says that Phoebe said she had a date but she was lying because she has turned down every boy since Rick Oliver died. Liz decides to wait up for Phoebe.

Scene 2
Location establishing shot of closed Youth Center

Gideon leads Phoebe, who is till tied up and gagged, to the boarded up door of the Youth Center. She flinches and he tells her "I thought I told you to be perfectly still Phoebe… If you move I might think you are trying to get away and I will have to do something to make you quite uncomfortable. Do you understand me?" As he picks the lock, Gideon says "This shouldn't take long. I've had quite a bit of experience with all sorts of locks. Luckily I carry the tools of the trade with me. Then I've been lucky in all sorts of incidents. Lucky that you didn't make your appearance till Orin Hillyer had left. Lucky that I thought of the Youth Center and read that it had been boarded up." He gets the door open and Phoebe tries to run. He grabs her and says as he leads her into the building "No, No, No…be my guest…mine and Rick Oliver." Gideon shuts door behind them.
