ACT 2
The LePage dining room.

Vic Lamont is having dinner with Kay Reynolds and her father Walter LePage. Vic is obviously having too much wine and acts tipsy. Kay tries to get Vic to tell her father about the undercover work that he did to bust up a drug ring several years ago. Kay proceeds to boast to Walter that "there were some people working on the Crime Commission that wanted to know the location of a huge shipment of narcotics, and Vic pretended to commit a crime so that he could be sent to prison, because there were some people there with that information." Walter cuts his daughter off to say that sounds like peculiar work for an attorney and asks Vic if he does that sort of work all the time. "Not when I can avoid it, " answers Vic. "Leave the heroics to the heroes." Kay explains that Vic did it for Mike Karr. Walter says that he knows about Karr and his "stellar reputation". LePage asks Vic if he was Mike's law partner. Vic laments that the partnership didn't happen because of his failed marriage to Mike's daughter Laurie.

Kay decides to leave the two men alone to talk. Walter pours some brandy and says that Kay expects him to apologize for the way he acted the other morning-- when he found Vic in Kay's bedroom. Vic says that Walter doesn't have to apologize for anything. Vic knows that the only reason he has a law office is because Kay convinced Walter to buy him one. LePage counters that he didn't buy anything-- he made a loan so that Vic would have the capital to set up an office. LePage is giving Vic the opportunity to handle some business for him and expects full payment from the fees collected. However, Walter admits that his only motivation for helping Vic is because of Kay. She likes Vic, which is sufficient reason for Walter's financial assistance. Vic wants to explain his reason for accepting Walter's help but is too drunk to remember it. LePage says that he gave Kay's former husband Ashley Reynolds some business too-- a job at LePage's parent company. Surprisingly, Reynolds did the job well enough, and Walter hopes that Vic will do equally well. Vic assures Walter he will, even though he's still unsure about why he has Walter's account. LePage responds that since Vic was Mike Karr's associate, he's obviously not an amateur. Vic responds that he is an amateur drinker and isn't feeling well. He excuses himself and leaves. As he does, LePage ponders the situation and pours the rest of the brandy back into the decanter.

Outside Babs' apartment.

Babs says that she knows Johnny and Laurie are in love with each other since Laurie told the whole world at Adam Drake's murder trial. Danny tries to convince her that Laurie and Vic are still together. He insists that Johnny and Laurie became friends when she started playing the piano at the New Moon. Babs responds that she notices the way Johnny looks at Laurie. She is sad because Johnny doesn't care whether she is around or not. Danny says that Johnny needs time to get his head straight. He explains that Johnny is his "goomba"... "paisano"... best friend. They grew up in the same neighborhood, played stickball together, and attended P.S. 9.
Babs admits that she doesn't think she should see Johnny again. Danny tries to convince her otherwise. As she goes to enter her apartment, Danny says that if she doesn't come around the New Moon anymore HE will miss her. They share a kiss on the lips. Danny leaves, and Babs watches longingly as he walks away.

The Karr living room.

Vic apologizes for his inebriated state. He says that Mike visited him earlier and told him that he wasn't very fair to Laurie. "And he hit the nail on the head, " says Vic drunkenly. Laurie responds that she asked her father to visit Vic because she's confused about everything. She doesn't know where she stands. Vic reveals that things are going to change, and he hands Laurie legal separation papers. Upset, Laurie asks Vic to stay and talk, but Vic leaves, asking her to think about the separation and call him next week.

Scene 2
The Drake apartment.

Nicole tells her guests that she doesn't think it's a good time to see her father. His timing couldn't be worse. Adam explains that Nicole is worried that he father's checkered past will harm Adam's political career. Nicole confesses that it has crossed her mind several times and laments that "having Benjamin Travis as a father-in-law is not exactly a political asset. " Adam counters that if he really thought that were true, he'd tell Geraldine Whitney to back a another boy. Mike tells Nicole that if she wants to see her father, she should go. Nicole admits that the only reason she is going is because Peter Quinn came by and arranged for her to see her father outside of normal visiting hours. She continues that maybe "the reason that I am fighting this thing is because I don't want to go... because I'm afraid to see my father after all of these years."
Hal Simms: "Our story continues after this message."

ACT 5
The Drake apartment.

Nancy says that she sees how Nicole must feel... not having seen her father for so long. Mike asks if Nicole has any idea why Ben suddenly changed his mind about keeping in touch with her. Nicole answers that she doesn't... maybe it's because of his illness. Adam adds that Ben may not have any particular reason at all. He may have simply changed his position. Nancy adds that Nicole was the most important thing in Ben's life. "Maybe I thought that one, Nancy, " responds Nicole. "Up to five or six years ago. Until I found out there were things in his life he had hidden from me since my childhood." Nancy asks is it's possible that Ben has changed during his time in prison. "Maybe he has, " replies Nicole pensively. "Maybe he has..."

(DISSOLVE TO A PRISON HOSPITAL BED)

Benjamin Travis is asleep in the bed. The door opens and someone enters the room. The person asks if Ben is awake. Ben answers that he is. The unseen guest asks how he feeling. Ben replies that he only answers questions for his doctor. "As for you," Ben states, "ask me about my soul." We then see that the visitor is a prison chaplain. He came with news about the letter Ben wrote to Nicole. The chaplain tells Ben that Nicole will be there tomorrow morning. Ben is surprised. He tells the chaplain, "There's one thing I want you to promise me... one thing I want you to swear to do. Swear to me on your Bible, Father, that you won't tell my daughter the truth. You won't tell her that I'm dying!"
