ACT 1

At the Art Institute, a young Lee Pollock goes into the classroom. Classmate Betsy Brown asks him if he saw their teacher Mr. Gallowen. She says that the selection committee is about to set a date for awarding their fellowship grants. Lee says that he feels sick. Betsy asks him if the police have been around. Lee, upset, tells her not to push the panic button. Betsy retorts that he is up to here in a knife killing and not for him to push the panic button.

ACT 2

At Mike Karr's office, Mike is on the phone with his secretary Jean. He wants her to get in touch with Chief Marceau for him, and to let Phil Capice in when he arrives. Mike then talks to Nancy (PLEASE NOTE: IN THIS EPISODE, NANCY POLLOCK IS NOT PLAYED BY ANN FLOOD), who is at the office also. They talk about the attack that her father Joe took on Mike in the papers. She also says that it looks like Joe and Lee might be involved in the Julie Kurtz murder. Jean gets Marceau on the phone, and Mike tells him that he needs whatever information is available on the case. Nancy is worried that Joe was forced into slandering Mike. Phil Capice enters the office. Mike, Nancy, and Phil talk about the situation and how Nancy moved out of the house because of Joe's attack on Mike. Joe didn't know that Mike and Nancy were going to get married. Phil did some checking into Joe Pollock and his info doesn't show that Joe would be vulnerable to blackmail. Mike tells Phil that Lee may be involved in a murder.

ACT 3--Scene 1

At the Art Institute, Mr. Gallowen walks into the classroom with some drawings and talks to Lee and Betsy. Gallowen is concerned that Lee is not getting his designs out on time. Betsy says that they are working together, helping each other out. This is said to get Gallowen off their backs. Lee tells Betsy that Nancy moved out of the house because of what Joe said about Mike in the paper. Betsy tells Lee that she cares what happens to him.

Scene 2

At Mike Karr's office, Bill Marceau arrives with information on the Kurtz murder. He says that Nancy's brother is mentioned in this, and that they have not been able to come up with any decent leads. The specifics in the Chief's info are: Kurtz was 22 when he died. Death was caused by a stab wound--he was stabbed in the back. Murder weapon found on the scene belonged to the victim. Kurtz had a record and a bad reputation, as well. Lee had explained that he was driving around because he was having problems with his work. Joe corroborated the story as Lee picked up his father around midnight.

Bill says that his sole purpose is to catch Kurtz's killer. He can cut Mike some slack, while mike can check out some leads as well.
