Harry Kramer: The Edgggge of Night
ACT ONE
Joe Pollock's office
Joe Pollock and Ken Emerson talk about doing a story on juvenile delinquency. Ken suggests that they do it on delinquency among the privileged. Joe agrees and asks how the delinquency rate in Monticello stacks up against the national average. Emerson says that according to Chief Marceau it is lower, but when he started documenting the actual cases of vandalism, dope addiction, and theft, it is pretty frightening. Joe says that he and Rose were lucky with their three children. Rose comes in with presents that she just bought. She gets the men to leave the office and invites Ken to dinner.

ACT TWO
The Pollock home.
Cookie and Lee decorate the house for Christmas. Lee is bothered by his situation with Beth Anderson. He doesn't know how she really feels. Cookie says that Beth wouldn't go ahead with the marriage plans if she didn't really love him. Lee admits that he doesn't want Beth to marry because it seems like the right thing to do, or because she's mad at John Barnes, or for any other reason except that she loves him. Cookie asks if he doubts Beth's intentions. Lee responds that if Beth thought she was in love with John while Lee was away, what's to prevent Beth from feeling that way now? Cookie says to trust Beth, but Lee isn't sure that Beth even knows her own mind now. Joe, Rose, and Ken come in. Cookie is glad to see Ken. The Pollocks invite Ken over for Christmas. Lee points to the mistletoe and asks Ken what he's waiting for. Ken obliges by taking Cookie in his arms and kissing her.

ACT THREE
The Pollock kitchen
Joe and Rose clean up after dinner abd talk about Ken. Joe thinks that he made a mistake by inviting Ken over for Christmas, as Joe feels it isn't a good idea to encourage Ken too much. Rose says that if there was anything worrisome about Ken and Cookie's attraction, she wouldn't have invited Ken to dinner. Joe is shocked that Rose knows about Cookie and Ken. Rose admits that the two were attracted to each other since Ken went to work for Joe at the paper. Joe thinks the whole relationship is one-sided and doesn't want to see a nice guy like Ken get hurt. Rose manuevers Joe into admitting that the age difference between Ken and Cookie troubles him. Rose further cautions that the last time an older man became interested in Cookie, they had strong opinions, which they expressed often. "Now after what happened then, don't you think we should have learned our lesson," Rose warns her husband.

ACT FOUR
Scene 1
Beth Anderson's home
Beth places her Christmas presents under the tree. Lee comes by, and they exchange gifts. As he hugs Beth, Lee tells her that he has the very best present. They wish one another a Merry Christmas.
Scene 2
The Pollock living room
Ken and Cookie talk. Ken says that Joe nad Rose have been so kind, and he doesn't want to take advantage of them. Cookie asks if Ken is apologizing for kissing her under the mistletoe. Ken admits that he is feeling more like a boy than an old man. Cookie says that she likes him just the way he is...just the age he is. Ken is glad and reminds Cookie that "we all need a little assurance once in a while." Cookie wonders is anyone ever outgrows that need, because she wants to be able to stand alone. Ken assures her that there's a difference between standing alone and being alone. One is good; the other is destructive.
Cookie notes that Ken has been standing for alone for a long time, and he hasn't been destroyed. Ken replies that it could destroy him, especially when he thinks about what he's missed. Cookie asks if he isn't contradicting himself because earlier he said that when his wife died, he couldn't find a girl to replace her. Ken responds that he could have been wrong... people aren't meant to live by memories. He is beginning to realize that. "Perhaps there can be a second time around. Different, but just as real. Just as rich. Just as complete." Cookie agrees that of course there can be a second time for him.

ACT FIVE
Beth Anderson's house
Lee tries to find out what his present is. Beth scolds him, and Lee remarks that he's not one of her 9th grade students. Beth fires back that he's worse... old enough to know better, but way too big to spank. When Lee asks what she's going to do with him, Beth says that she'll just have to marry him.
Lee takes offense at the phrase "have to marry" and admits that sometimes one gets into a situation from which you cannot easily extricate yourself. Beth doesn't want to talk about this again, saying that she already explained her temporary interest in John Barnes, which is now over. Beth reminds Lee that there wasn't anything to turn off and adds, "Besides, if there had been, after the way John treated you..."
Lee jumps in and says that's exactly what he's talking about. Beth is still angry, but when she gets through being mad, "what will happen then?" Under the resentment and hurt, what does Beth really feel for John? When Beth fails to respond, Lee continues questioning her. He hates to do it, but if they're going to spend the rest of their lives together, he's got to be sure that she's finished with John. Beth retorts that she is finished. She's not a liar or hypocrite, and if he doesn't want to believe her, she doesn't know what to do about it. Furthermore, does Lee think that she's so dishonest with herself that she'd marry a man she doesn't even love. Lee agrees that she is not. Beth finally admits that they should get married as soon as possible..."like right after the holidays."
