ACT ONE
Scene 1
The Warren home.
Emory Warren reads a list entitled "Symptoms that indicate possible heart trouble". He thinks to himself, "Some kind of pills maybe...would speed up my pulse..."
His wife Lynn comes in. Warren asks if she slept well. "Like the dead, " Lynn responds. With those words, Emory holds his gaze upon her. Lynn wants to know if he'll write the letter today and make it clear that he knew the baby wasn't hers. "Anything to show you how much I love you, " Emory assures her. "If having me as deep in this thing as you are will make you happy, consider the letter written." Warren explains that he's got a couple of things to tie up and has to check the warehouse before they leave for Mexico. He says that he will make it back as early as possible, and tells Lynn that she should got to the doctor for a checkup and clean bill of health. The baby cries. Before Lynn goes to check on her, she hugs Emory and informs him, "Em, I need you so much." As Lynn leaves the room, Emory thinks to himself, "Yes, but I don't need you. Not any more!" He leaves the house.
Scene 2
The Karr home.
Nancy Karr and Joe Pollock talk about Christmas gifts for Laurie Ann. The phone rings. It's Winston Grimsley calling from Lakeview. He's calling for Mike. Nancy tells Winston that Mike isn't home. He left for an early appointment with Mrs. Mona Sherman, whose husband owns the Gaiety Club. Mike is attempting to track down the whereabouts of Sam Haven. Winston asks Nancy to tell Mike that he's in Lakeview to delay the Warren's departure from Monticello. When Nancy asks how he intends to accomplish the task, Winston replies that is the reason he needs to speak with Mike. Nancy wishes Winston good luck and a Merry Christmas. "There have been merrier ones, I'm afraid," Winston laments. "However, perhaps the New Year will be the happiest that I, as well as Phil and Louise, ever had." Winston wishes Nancy a Merry Christmas.

Scene 2
Hull Realty.
Winston Grimsley visits Mr. Hull. Winston gets down to business. They discuss the fact that Grimsley was willing to pay $125, 000 for the old Calder property. The owner was more than happy to accept. Hull has the paperwork for Winston to sign. As Grimsley looks it over, Hull tells him that Hull Realty guarantees all sales, and Winston doesn't have to read the fine print. Winston reads it anyway and agrees that everything seems to be in order, but he does want to see the abstract. Hull is taken aback and says that everything is fine. Winston insists, though. Hull gives him the abstract, and when he leaves to get coffee, Winston reads the abstract, puts the papers down, and rubs his chin ponderously.

ACT FOUR
Scene 1
Hull Realty.
Winston looks over the documents and is not satisfied. He notices that, "These people... the Warren's, Emory and Lynn, had an option on this property previously." Hull explains that they sold the option to the present owner. Winston cautions that he doesn't like the wording of the transfer. He wouldn't think of buying the land without getting a quit-claim from the Warrens. To expedite matters, Winston tells Hull that he will give the Warrens $2500 to get the quit-claim. Hull gets his secretary to call Monticello information and obtain the phone number for Emory and Lynn. Winston enjoys the success of his stalling tactics.
Scene 2

The Warren home.
Lynn is on the phone with Mr. Hull. He explains to her about Winston's request for a quit-claim. She says that she will have to talk to her husband first. They hang up. Lynn marvels at the $2500 sum. Emory calls from the custodian's office, and informs Lynn that he isn't feeling well. It's probably indigestion he lies. Lynn attempts to tell him about Mr. Hull's call, but Emory cuts her off by saying, loud enough for the custodian to hear, that the "indigestion" is really bothering him. After she hangs up, Lynn says to herself. "$2500! It sure would tide us over until... until we make our arrangements with Mr. Grimsley."
