ACT ONE
The custodian's office at the warehouse.

Emory Warren fakes a pain in his chest. He sends the custodian next door to Mercy Hospital to get some bicarbonate of soda. When the man leaves, Emory glances over his list of of heart problem symptoms and says, "dizziness." Emory calls Lynn and tells her that he has a pain, and he's feeling dizzy. He drops the phone to the floor, and then roughs up the office a bit. "Good enough...good enough, " he says looking over what he's done.

ACT TWO
The Karr home.

Nancy prepares Christmas presents for the Grimsleys, Capices, and the Pollocks. Mike comes in, maneuvers Nancy under the mistletoe, and kisses her. She tells him about Winston calling from Lakeview and his attempt to delay the departure of the Warrens. Mike is curious about Winston's method. The doorbell rings, and Bill Marceau arrives with a present for Laurie Ann. He explains that Martha...his assistant Miss Spears, shopped for him. Nancy takes the present for Laurie while Mike and Bill remain in the livingroom to discuss business. Bill wants to know if Mike got anything out of MIss Sherman. "No. Except that bookie is going to see what he can come up with on Sam Haven through the grapevine, " Mike responds. Bill says that Robinson, Haven's parole officer, might be of some help to them through the Warrens. Mike agrees, and Bill telephones Tom Robinson.

ACT THREE
Scene 1
The warehouse.

The custodian returns with Emory's bicarbonate of soda pills. The custodian says that he's going home to Christmas dinner. Emory gives the custodian a tip, wishing him a Merry Christmas. After the man leaves, the phone rings. It's Lynn calling to ask her husband if his indigestion is still bothering him. She starts to tell him about the property in Lakeview, but Emory says that it is Vic Miller's problem now, and they'll talk about it when he gets home.

Scene 2
The Karr home.

Nancy and Laurie leave to deliver the gifts, just as Tom Robinson enters stating that he's just as anxious about getting a fix on on Sam Haven as Mike and Bill are. Mike says that he wants Haven because Haven is going to be a key witness in re-opening the custody case he's working on. Also, Mike knows that the Warrens have a real estate deal in Mexico, and he needs to know exactly when they're going to leave Monticello. Robinson asks them to give him an hour, and he'll get the information for Mike. Mike offers Robinson a couple of Christmas cookies. Comically, Bill gets mad at Mike for offering the man two cookies.

ACT FOUR
Scene 1
The warehouse.

Emory goes to the far wall of the warehouse and removes a secret panel that leads to Mercy Hospital. He gets into the hospital and takes some pills from a cabinet. He returns to the secret panel and has trouble opening it. Finally, Emory gets the panel open and returns to the warehouse.

Scene 2
The Warren home.

Lynn is packing suitcases for the planned trip to Mexico. The phone rings. It is Mr. Hull, the realtor. She tells him that she hasn't spoken to her husband yet. As she hangs up the phone, the doorbell rings. Lynn opens the door to Tom Robinson. "Sam Haven's parole officer," Robinson introduces himself.

ACT FIVE
Scene 1
The Warren house.

Robinson apologizes to Lynn for being there on Christmas and asks about Sam Haven. Lynn says that she knew Sam from when they worked together in the same nightclub. Robinson informs Lynn that her old friend jumped his parole. She explains that she's leaving on a trip and would appreciate it if Robinson would hurry up with his questioning. Robinson continues to ask about Haven, but Lynn doesn't have any answers. However, in the course of the conversation, Lynn inadvertently gives him her airline flight information. Robinson wishes her Happy Holidays and leaves.

Scene 2
The warehouse office.

Emory takes out an envelope of pills and states, "One of these should speed up the heart beat. Two should really do it." He takes the pills, then he burns the list of symptoms in an ashtray. He feels his pulse.

ACT SIX
Scene 1
The Karr home.

Mike tells Bill if they don't locate Haven, he will re-open the hearing to keep the Warrens in Monticello. Bill points out that if they lose again, the Capices will not get their baby back. Mike says that he's got to take that risk.
Tom Robinson arrives and tells the men that the Warrens are going to Mexico City tonight at 11:30.
Mike runs to the phone and calls his secretary.

Mike: Hello, Jean. This is Mr. Karr. Sorry to call on Christmas, but I want you to get ahold of Kathleen Finelli and tell her to stand by. Then I want to issue three subpoenas for Carol Kramer, Emory Warren, and Lynn Warren. They are set to get on a plane at 11:30, so move lady, please!

Mike then phones for his private eye Oakley Reynolds.

Scene 2
The warehouse.

Warren puts out the fire in the ashtray. Then he calls home, but there is a busy signal. He calls the operator and asks her to break in on the line. He explains that he's been trying to call home, but the line is busy, and please break in as it's an "emergency!"
