ACT ONE
The Karr home

Louise arrives to have lunch with Nancy. Nancy tells her how frantic it is getting things ready for Mike's trip. Louise admits that Phil said Mike is finding things pretty frantic at the office, too. Louise asks if Mike is finding it more complicated to arrange for Adam to take over the practice. Nancy replies that the problem is that every client thinks he is the only client, and Adam has not been able to meet them all yet. Louise explains that she and Phil saw Cookie and Adam together at the Monticello Club on Christmas Eve, with Cookie looking head-over-heels in love, and wants to know if things have started up between the two again, and if a wedding could be imminent. Nancy replies that she honestly doesn't know, but she hopes so. "It would make me happier than you could imagine, " Nancy confides.

ACT TWO
Scene 1
Mike Karr's office

Mike's secretary Jeanne Culpepper is on the phone with Peter Quinn, explaining that Mike is trying to lighten his work load so that he can get away. Mike takes the phone and talks to Quinn. Mike can't get in a word edgewise, as Quinn does most of the talking. Mike finally manages to tell the DA to take it up with Mike's partner Adam Drake.
Jeanne comes in and says that Mr. Capice is already at the Coach House waiting for Mike. He instructs Jeanne to tell Adam to come in, but Jeanne says that Adam was going to lunch right after the courthouse. Mike tells Jeanne to give Adam a memo: "Advise McNeil to cop a plea. We don't have a plausible legal defense. If we have to go to trial, the judge is bound to instruct the jury to convict. Kendricks... tell Adam to dig out 59 Monticello 321. That is the perfect precedent for this case. "
Mike asks Jeanne about Adam's lunch date, and she reveals that it's with Cookie Thomas. Mike isn't surprised. He comments that the two seem to be getting along pretty well. At least they gave that impression Christmas Day. Jeanne admits that she's surprised by that, as she thought Adam had other plans for Christmas. Mike replies that Adam arrived late, but once he got there, Mike didn't think Cookie and Adam would ever get out from under the mistletoe.

Scene 2
Cookie's desk

Bill has Cookie place a phone call for him, and she tells Bill that Martha should be back any second. Ken Emerson comes in. Cookie tells Ken that she and Bill were discussing Ken's series on corruption in Leroy County. Ken says that it was Joe Pollock's idea, and it's going to be a crusade if they can pull it off with Bill's help. Cookie admits that Bill had Martha and her digging up dirt on Leroy County all morning.
Ken notices Cookie looking at her watch and asks if she's got a date with Adam. Cookie says yes and informs Ken that he missed a lot of fun with them at Christmas. Furthermore, Ken was missed. He's one of their dearest friends... like one of the family.
Cookie remarks that she was almost abandoned on Christmas until Adam showed up. Cookie explains that Adam arrived very late because he was out of town earlier that day. "He was where?" asks a stunned Ken. Cookie tells him that Adam spent the day upstate visiting with a friend in a Veteran's hospital... an old army buddy. Cookie comments that it's just like Adam to give up his own Christmas to help someone else. Ken stares at Cookie and looks concerned about what she's just said about Adam.

ACT THREE
The Karr home

Louise tells Nancy that Liz and Steve Prentiss are moving into the Capice's garage apartment. Louise remarks about how happy the young couple looks, but Nancy wonders if Liz mentioned Orin and how hesitant she is to leave him alone. Louise asks Nancy if Orin is in worse shape. Nancy replies that Liz told her that Orin has gotten better. Nancy and Louise recall the last time they were at the Hillyer home and how Orin talked about his late wife Laura. "It gave me the shivers, " Louise admits. Nancy says that Orin speaks as if Laura were still a part of his life. Louise adds that the worst moment came when Orin thought he heard Laura playing the piano and queries whether or not he got over that delusion. Nancy reminds her that there's another woman who plays piano, a singer who accompanies herself at The Riverboat. Nancy explains that Liz has seen the woman-- Julie Jamison... and Nancy and Martha ran into her too while Christmas shopping.

Nancy: Louise, it's as if Laura Hillyer was standing there. She looks exactly like her. Exactly. Oh... Laura had short dark hair, and this girl's is long and blonde, but apart from that, it could have been Laura. Martha and I were speechless...

When Louise asks if Orin knows about Julie Jamison, Nancy replies that Liz is worried about just that. Orin may be better, but "he is not what we call a stable person yet." Furthermore, Nancy reveals that Liz is afraid Orin might identify Julie with Laura, and try to contact her. Louise comments that no matter how unstable Orin is, he is still Orin Hillyer... "he still has the education and background." Nancy replies that she told Liz that Orin's background would probably deter Orin's attraction to a girl like Julie Jamison. The type of life that kind of girl lives is totally different from Orin's. "On the other hand, do you know any person in the entire world who could account for a man's taste in women?" Louise questions.

ACT FOUR
Martha's desk

Ken Emerson comes out of Bill's office and asks for Cookie. Martha tells him that she has already left. Martha wants to know if they dug up some good stuff on Leroy County. Ken says much obliged. Bill told Martha what it is all about, and she thinks it's about time for an expose on all those shady doings over there.
Ken changes the subject to Cookie and Adam and says that he didn't buy it from the beginning... "the big revival between Cookie and Drake. This sudden cracking up of emotions." Martha say that the girl is in love. Ken knows that but feels she is headed for a fall because Adam Drake happens to be a liar. Ken explains that Adam lied about being upstate Christmas Day. Ken ran into Adam at a diner that day, and Adam was having dinner alone.
Martha doesn't have the vaguest idea why Adam would lie to Cookie. Ken replies that he's got an idea, an idea that he's had since he and Cookie went to The Riverboat and stumbled upon Adam and Nancy in an ardent clinch. Martha reminds him that it's what Adam and Nancy wanted everyone to think. Ken admits that he thought it was for real, and even though he later learned they were acting, he wasn't sure if Adam didn't really feel something. "That look on his face, was that the look of a man only pretending to be in love?" Ken wonders. Martha assures him that they were simply acting for Ephraim Webster.

Ken: Then when the playacting was all over, when they were no longer under Ephraim Webster's orders, why didn't Drake rush back to Cookie, the girl he was presumably in love with? The girl he abandoned because he was under obligation to the A.C.E.? No. He stalled around. He avoided. He practically brushed her off. Why...?

Ken continues that he bought all of Drake's excuses until today... when he learned that Drake lied about his whereabouts Christmas Day. Ken speculates that Adam lied to avoid spending time with both Nancy and her sister Cookie. "He is pretending to be in love with Cookie, but he has never gotten over Nancy, " Emerson states. Martha responds that it's not true because she knows the facts:

Martha: Adam was attracted to Nancy. It was a result of them being thrown together by Ephraim Webster. It was a very one-sided thing. It was a momentary infatuation, and it's over. I mean, I think Adam had a struggle with himself, and it's over, and that's that.

Emerson doesn't believe it. "On the basis of what I've seen, I don't. Not for second, " Ken says emphatically.
Hal Simms: Our story continues after this message.

Mike and Phil are having drinks during lunch. Phil warns Mike not to let them run him ragged in Capitol City. Mike tells Phil to keep his fingers crossed that Mike is up to the challenge. Phil says that he is the right man. He's seen Mike Karr in action. "For quite a number of years, " Mike replies.

Phil: Remember the last time I went dashing about in planes?
Mike: When you went down to Mexico to bring back John and Beth from that hospital?
Phil: Before that.
Mike:Oh yes. You were trying to locate Angie... what's her name?
Phil:Talbot. Angie Talbot.
Mike:And I joined you there afterwards and found out that she'd been murdered.
Phil:We've been through some times together.
Mike: We sure have.
Phil:Well, buddy. I'm going to be aware of your absence.
Mike:That goes double.
(They clink their glasses together)
Phil:I think you are going to be too busy to be aware of anything... wives and daughters excepted.
Mike:You know Nancy wanted to come along.
Phil:That's what Louise said.
Mike:I just can't see it. Readjusting your whole life. It would be different if I were going to spend more than two months up in Capitol City.
Phil:I agree. Louise and I will see that she's not bored.
Mike:You and my junior partner.
Phil: Who? Adam?
Mike:Yeah. I've asked him to keep an eye on Nancy.
Phil:Well, she won't lack for attention now.
Mike:No. No. Frankly though, I'd rather count on you and Louise.
Phil:Adam's not dependable? What do you mean?
Mike:(leaning forward) HE'S IN LOVE, MAN!
Phil:(laughs) Yes, I gathered that the last time I saw him.
Mike: He's got it so bad that without me here, I don't think he'll remember that Nancy exists.
(They both laugh)
