ACT 1

Establishing shot of the exterior of the Monticello County Courthouse. In Austin Johnson's office, Johnson is talking to Teresa Vetter. They argue because Mike Karr made her testimony look phoney. Austin says that he suspects that Teresa is Victor Carlson's killer. Mike walks in with a warrant signed by Judge Edwards for the detention of Teresa Vetter on suspicion of murder. Mike and Austin leave to see the judge. Teresa says that she will stay until they return. A guard looks out the window. There is a flash of lightning and a clap of thunder. "Looks like there's going to be a storm," he says.

ACT 2

In the judge's chambers, Mike and Austin arrive. Judge Edwards wants to talk to them about the dramatics and sensationalism that took place in the courtroom. Mike had announced in court that he would prove Teresa Vetter killed Victor Carlson. Mike's theatrics in court were an attempt to make Teresa confess. Apparently the killer was left-handed, and to prove that Teresa was left-handed, Mike threw a fountain pen at her to catch Teresa off-guard and make her catch it with her left hand. Teresa did catch the pen, proving Mike's theory. Johnson then asks the judge to speak to Teresa alone, since Johnson was onetime close to Teresa and could possibly convince her to confess. Judge Edwards agrees. As Mike is about to leave, the judge tells him to return in ten minutes, he wants to talk to him.
