Act 1

Takes place in Mike Karr and Charlie Brooks' office, the Robbery Squad at the stationhouse. Mike Karr is describing to the Captain and Charlie about the night that they were trying to take down Smith and Larry and how Larry got away. Mike takes the blame for Larry's escape. The captain doesn't believe him. By Charlie Brooks' nervous actions, it's apparent that it was Charlie's fault and that Mike is covering for him. The captain doesn't believe Karr's insistence that it was his fault. Mike asks, "Are you calling me a liar?" The captain replies, "Yes, I am."

ACT 2

Still takes place in the Robbery Squad. The three men are still discussing the events of the night that Larry got away. The phone rings. Sgt. Vincent calls to say that he pulled all cards of every suspect named Larry that fits the description that Mike gave. Charlie goes for the cards and comes back. Mike looks through several of them and then says, "Here's our man!" He flips the card over to look at the name, and he reads "Larry---White". White had two previous convictions for armed robbery and three arrests that didn't stick due to a lack of evidence. Mike vows to catch him this time. He sends Brooks to put out an APB on Larry White.

Smith, the prisoner that they arrested that night, is brought in and questioned by Mike and the Captain. They question Smith about the truck that he had and about Larry and his whereabouts the night of June 14th. Mike asks if it is not true that he and Larry robbed some hams from Harry Lane's truck. Smith remains defiant. Mike continues his hard questioning. He asks Smith what he knows about some stolen mink coats that were in boxes marked hams. The three policemen continue to pound away questions at Smith. They also ask him about Rose LaTour. Smith clams up. He is then taken away. Mike seems defeated. He asks the captain why would Lane say that he was carrying hams when they were indeed carrying minks. They realize that Martin Spode, Lane's general manager, might be involved, and Mike says that he and Charlie will find him.

Act 3--Scene 1

Takes place in Martin and Hester Spode's bedroom. Hester is tuning the radio to find the news program of David Murphy. Martin comes in and talks optimistically about some money that he is about to get and how things will be better. Hester will be able to get the operation she needs, and they will be able to get a radio that works. They laugh. Martin says that he can't give details about the nature of the money. Their daughter Bebe comes in and asks that when they get the money, can they all go to Cuba? The doorbell rings. Martin goes to answer it...

Scene 2

Downstairs in the Spode house. Martin goes downstairs and opens the door. It's Mike Karr and Sgt. Charlie Brooks. They tell Spode that they want to ask him some questions down at the stationhouse. When Spode says that he won't go, Mike gives him a piece of paper. Spode reads it, gets nervous, and goes to tell Hester that he'll be going out.

Scene 3

In the Spode bedroom again. Martin returns to tell Hester that he has to go out in connection to "the proposition" that he spoke of earlier. He says that he may be gone a few days. Hester worries, "What will we do?"

ACT 4--Scene 1

Martin tries to calm his wife down and tells her not to think like an invalid. He says that he may be gone a few days, but he will get someone to come in and help her and Bebe. Martin turns to leave. Bebe hugs him.

Scene 2

Takes place in the Robbery Squad room. Karr, Spode, and Brooks enter. The police begin to question Spode. Martin feigns ignorance as to why he is there. Mike informs him that they spoke to Bill Smith and are looking for Larry White. Spode continues to be ignorant towards the questions. However, one of Karr's questions about the truck, box of hams, Bill Smith, and Larry White finally trips up Spode. Mike sends Spode down to Crowden (another officer) for more questioning. He then decides to play Spode off against Smith.
