ACT 1

Takes place in the Spode living room. Bebe is playing with a doll, trying to fix a broken leg. Martin comes in and helps her with the doll. He questions her about what she did today, making sure that she didn't have any contact with the outside world. He tells her that until he goes away, she is not to go outside. Hester enters the room to speak to her husband.

COMMERCIAL

ACT 2--Scene 1

In the Spode living room. Martin and Hester discuss telling Bebe the truth about Martin going to prison. Hester wants the girl to know; Martin doesn't. He doesn't want Bebe to find out from friends or the newspapers either.

Scene 2

Takes place in Harry Lane's office/study. Harry is talking to his lawyer Everett about the Spode case. Spode was found with stolen minks. Lane wonders if he should testify against Spode to make sure that Spode doesn't blow the whistle and tell the truth...that the stolen goods belonged to Harry. Lane plans to get Spode to sign a confession to make sure that he (Harry) is not implicated in the crime. Lane plans to tell Martin to take the confession to the arresting officer, Lt. Mike Karr.

COMMERCIAL

ACT 3

Takes place in Harry Lane's office/study. Spode wants Harry's lawyer to hold up the case. Harry wants things to proceed quickly. Spode wants to be able to send Hester and Bebe away during his trial and sentencing. Harry will not hear of it. He gives Martin the confession and tells him to take it to Mike Karr, waiving a jury trial. Spode initially refuses, but when Lane offers him more money and brings up the idea that Martin had something to do with Smith's killing, Spode goes along with it, and says that the money will go to Hester's operation.

COMMERCIAL

ACT 4--Scene 1

Takes place in Harry's study. Cora enters and and speaks to Harry about her big party. He wants his wife to sign Spode's confession as a witness. She says no, as she didn't see Martin sign it. Besides, she doesn't want to get involved so close to "Monticello's biggest social event". Harry talks her into signing the Spode confession. She does, but says that she doesn't feel well and needs a drink.

Scene 2

At the Spode's house, Hester talks to Bebe about Martin having to go away. Martin walks in on them and tells Hester that Harry Lane will take care of her operation. He also says that he will not have a jury trial, and that he'll be leaving next week. They talk about Bebe knowing the truth, and Martin says that Harry says the sooner this is over, the better. Hester reminds him that they are lucky to have a fine man like Mr. Lane in their corner. Martin sarcastically agrees.

COMMERCIAL

TEASER:

In a restaurant, Harry and Cora are having drinks when she tells him that she went to Winston Grimsley's office, and he was dictating a letter to Grace O'Keefe about a real estate deal with a man named John Barry. Harry's interest is piqued, and he excuses himself to find a phone.
