Sam sits at a desk rolling dice. Casey comes in and stops him. They talk and Sam tells him that there is a phone message for him. Casey gets worried when he sees that it is from Mr."K". Casey is worried because "K" wants his money soon. Sam tells Casey that he is a fool because he took the money from "K" and used it as a flier in the narcotics racket. Casey said that if things hadn't gone wrong, he would have made a bundle, paid back the money, and "K" wouldn't have been the wiser. Sam points out the stupid moves that Casey made...like getting involved with Jerry Harrison, who was supposed to sell the heroin in Monticello, but did so in Springfield instead. And, the fact that Harrison's friend Speed Taft got knocked off by the cops, who nabbed 10 kilos of the heroin. Sam tells Casey that he might be knocked off if he doesn't get Mr. K's cash. Casey says that he doesn't "have the money to give Kil...K...right now, but I've got something I'm planning to give him that he'll pay ten times what I owe him to get." Casey asks if Sam has found the lawyer he asked him to get. Sam did, but he's a drunken ex-JP from a small town upstate. He calls himself Judge Leland Davis Breckenridge, Jr. Casey says that he doesn't like using a drunk to do their legal work. He sends Sam to find Breckenridge and make a deal with him.

Ed comes in and says that if Helen McCabe hadn't seen Speed Taft, and if that stupid cub reporter hadn't...Judy stops him by saying that "if" is the most useless word in the English language. They put what happened in the past and decide to live in the present and future.

Scene 2

At Mr. K's office, Casey enters a secret room accessible by a sliding wall panel. He meets Scofield Killborn. Killborn asks for the money, but Reno says that he has something more valuable. Casey Reno plans to get Killborn in control of Winston Grimsley. He will do that by setting up an illegal adoption for the Capices, Louise being Winston's daughter. Think of what will happen when Mrs. Capice is threatened with having the child taken away from her, Reno explains to Killborn. She will do anything. Winston Grimsley will do anything to ensure his daughter's happiness. Killborn agrees that this scenario is fraught with possibilities. Reno is relieved and insinuates that this means more than the money he owes. Killborn says that it's not the money that was stolen from him that counts, but rather the betrayal of his trust. He says that Reno will pay dearly if he can't think of something to take its place. Casey asks if the scheme to get Grimsley under Killborn's control will accomplish it. Killborn says yes...if he can pull it off successfully. Reno replies, "Don't you worry about that." To that, Killborn responds, "I don't worry about it, but you better had." After Reno leaves the room, Killborn picks up the phone and orders someone to continue following Reno.
