Hal Simms: "Theeee EEEEEdgge of Night!"
ACT 1
Whitney mansion living room
Noel Douglas and Tracy Dallas are drinking and making out on the sofa in front of a crackling fire. Noel tells Tracy that Kevin and Geraldine had a terrible fight, and Kevin has left the mansion. Tracy reminds him that Kevin's absence won't change Geraldine's opinion of Noel. Geraldine has secretly returned to the house, and is drawn to the living room by the couple's laughter. An astonished Geraldine cries, "My God!" Tracy and Noel attempt to deceive Geraldine with the lie that Tracy brought important papers to the mansion for Noel to sign. Geraldine doesn't buy the paltry explanation.
Noel: What are you doing here?! This house
is supposed to be empty!
Geraldine: Oh... yes. I'm sure you thought
it was empty. That your wife and mother-in-law were gone... so anything
goes. Anything at all. Fortunately, I came back alone. I changed my mind.
I sent Tiffany off by herself. Don't tell me there isn't a providence.
There must be... because I came back to this house tonight to witness the
truth .

Whitney Mansion continued
Noel: Geraldine, I'm admitting I was wrong.
I'm admitting I made a mistake... alright?
Geraldine: (sarcastic) How noble of you.
Noel: The young lady came to deliver something
and we got to talking and we got to drinking too much...
Geraldine: The young lady ? My God,
Noel! Do you really think I'm that much of an idiot? Do you think I don't
recognize Tracy Dallas? Why, I know every detail of her life. Did you think
I wouldn't recognize her face?
Tracy grabs her coat and starts to leave, but Geraldine
blocks her.
Geraldine: You will remain right where you
are, Miss Dallas.
Noel: Let her go. We'll talk this over privately.
Geraldine: Oh, no. This is quite private
enough. As a matter of fact, a little too private. I'm only sorry
it can't include a larger conversational group. One that includes my daughter-in-law.
Tracy: (increasingly nervous) Noel, would
you please tell her to let me go?
Geraldine: (to Tracy) The minute you walk
out of this house, I shall have you arrested.
Tracy: Arrested? On what grounds?
Geraldine: (gloating) You're trespassing.
Will that do?
Tracy: But I-- I was told to come
here.
Noel: Shut up!
Geraldine: Yes. Do, Miss Dallas. Do allow
your friend Noel to invent some ridiculous excuse for his behavior.
Noel: Look, Geraldine. No matter what you're
thinking-- no matter how it may look, there are still some things that
haven't changed, now. You still don't want to hurt Tiffany by telling her
things that don't really concern her, do you?
Geraldine: (laughs) Oh, yes, Noel. I know
that argument. Let ignorance be bliss-- what she doesn't know won't hurt
her. Well, I'm very sorry... that logic doesn't work with me any longer.
I was stupid and naieve to have accepted that from you at all. To have
believed you meant what you said.
Noel: I did! I swear, I did!
Geraldine: When I tell Tiffany the truth...
and I will ... I'll have to apologize to her for hiding the truth
for so long.
Noel: You couldn't tell her. It would be
pointless...
Tracy starts to leave again.
Geraldine: No, Miss Dallas. No, no, no. I
have something to say to you, too.
Tracy: You see, I don't have to listen. Because
you mean nothing to me.
Geraldine: Oh, my dear. That's where you're
quite wrong. I'm your Boswell, Miss Dallas.
Tracy: (To Noel and back) My... my what?
Geraldine: I could be your biographer. Why
I'm the one person in the world who knows everything about you. I know
more ugly facts about your past than you may even remember.
Tracy: Noel, would you please make her stop.
Geraldine: My investigators were very thorough.
As a matter of fact, little too thorough. They told me more about your
sordid little life than I cared to hear. Why, I can give you the apartment
number in that house in Chicago. I can give you a list of names
of girls with whom you worked in "that house". Would you like to see that
list? Oh, and your police record... I have that, too.
Tracy: Police record? I was never in prison
in my life.
Geraldine: Oh, one doesn't have to be in
prison to have a police record. You were arrested weren't you? I can give
you the exact date. I must say that I could even give you the newspaper
clippings. You certainly photographed rather well... you and all those
other girls.
Tracy: Mrs. Whitney... you wouldn't do anything
with them. I mean, you wouldn't show them to anyone, would you? Like Mrs.
Douglas...
Geraldine: I'm through keeping secrets, Miss
Dallas! Yours or anyone else's!
Noel: Look, Geraldine. I'll say one more
time--
Geraldine: No! No you will not ! You
will not say one more thing in this house. You will leave this house at
once! (at Tracy) Both of you!!
Tracy grabs her purse and flees out the front door.
Noel turns to Geraldine, quiet with anticipation.
Geraldine: I said both of you!
Noel: Well, lets talk, for God's sake!
Geraldine: Get out, Noel! Take that girl
and go somewhere else for your recreation . Why don't you take her
to that apartment that you're paying for with Tiffany's money?
Noel: This is wrong to leave like this...
Geraldine: I said Get Out! Stay away from
this house. Tiffany may want you back for one last look, but I can't bear
the sight of you!
A dejected Noel grabs his coat, walks to the front
door, takes one last look, then storms out. Geraldine waits a beat, stunned.
Then, gaining composure, walks slowly as if in a trance. She climbs the
stairs and stops on the landing, gazing at the front door, and then she
continues up.
Scene 2
Restaurant
Brandy and Adam are dining and discussing the renovations
Adam is making to his new home, The Barn. Adam tells her about the renovations
he's made, but Brandy still jokingly sees it as "just a barn." Adam urges
her to see it for herself by spending the weekend there with him.

ACT 3
Restaurant continued
Brandy reminds Adam of their last weekend together and how it ended unhappily with Adam's refusal to discuss Serena Faraday. Adam says that he doesn't even like discussing a discussion of Serena. Brandy promises that the name Serena Faraday won't pass her lips. Adam changes the subject, telling Brandy that his only concern about her missing a day of work to go away with him concerns the DA office's informant who is "making accusations about people we know." Adam asks if the accusations are against John Dallas. Brandy concedes that they are. Adam wonders whether or not Brandy believes the informant. Brandy answers that she doesn't know, but she theorizes that maybe John did go back to the mob and has a contract out on his life because he double-crossed his employers. Adam admits that John's disappearance and failure to contact anyone is ominous.
Scene 2
The Karr kitchen.
Laurie reads a newspaper account of Johnny's disappearance
to Nancy. Laurie says that the police are making an appeal for Johnny to
contact them, even though he isn't being sought for arrest, only to clarify
his attack on Gerald Kincaid at The New Moon.

ACT 4
Scene1
Karr kitchen continued.
Nancy and Laurie talk about Johnny's disappearance. Laurie states that Bill Marceau must be aware of the marital problems between her and Johnny, and they should conclude this is the reason Johnny left. Laurie further states that she told Johnny that she didn't want him any longer. She wonders why the police would seek Johnny so urgently over a domestic matter, then Laurie asks Nancy if they are keeping serious information about Johnny from her. Nancy quietly replies that Laurie should ask Bill-- he's in the living room Mike.
Scene 2
Karr living room.
Bill tells Mike that Walter LePage told the police
that Gerald Kincaid is now the Number One man behind the mob. The question
is: why did John attack Kincaid at The Blue Moon? Mike speculates that
John's attack had nothing to do with the mob. Maybe the two men had words
that led to violence, and Kincaid retaliated by ordering a hit on John's
life. Bill reminds Mike that they don't know who ordered the hit... or
even who the hit man is.
Mike and Bill debate whether or not they should
show their hand by bringing Kincaid in and asking him outright. Bill says
that if Kincaid knows the police are on to him, he might be afraid to kill
Johnny and call off the hit. Mike isn't sure. Bill suggests another option:
go to the press and release all the information the police has about Kincaid
and Dallas. Bill thinks it might persuade Johnny to contact them. Mike
states that Bill seems to want Mike to make the ultimate decision. "He
is your son-in-law," replies Bill.
Hal Simms: Our story continues after this
message.

ACT 5
Scene 1
Restaurant.
Brandy admits that it makes her uncomfortable to keep official DA business secret from Adam. He understands, as he's not affiliated with the police, the DA's office, or the Crime Commission. With seductive banter, Adam tries to persuade Brandy into going to The Barn with him. Adam says that he really needs Brandy to organize his life for him. Brandy melts and agrees to go since she doesn't have pressing work the next day. Adam remembers that he does have some business with Geraldine. She asked him to revise her will. Adam says that surely that can wait a few days, and he phones the mansion to make sure. Adam finds it starnge when no one answers. Surely if Noel weren't there, John and Trudy would be.
Scene 2
The Whitney living room.
The telephone rings repeatedly. Slowly, the camera
pans across the empty, darkened room, through the foyer, and to the top
of the stairs. As the camera travels down the steps, a motionless, unconscious
Geraldine lies across the bottom three stairs.
