"Okay," Buffy said, as she finished up the scoop of chocolate ice cream and progressed to the last one in the disposable bowl, a butter pecan. "Well, let's look at this objectively. What would be the benefits in staying with Oz, or dating Xander, comparatively?"

Willow giggled at that from the other side of the table. They were sitting together in The Ice Cream Bar. "You make it sound like an essay question, Buffy. Love isn't like that, is it?"

Buffy considered. "Well, maybe not quite. But I don't think you can exactly sit there and wait for your heart to talk to you one afternoon. You can't stop thinking about them, is what I guess I'm saying."

Willow smiled. "Okay, I won't. I don't think I could if I wanted to. I'm- I'm just not ready to discuss it. Yet."

(At the Sunnydale city impound lot...)

"You want what?" Faith yelled.

"Hey, lady. The cars had been in a collision and were found abandoned..."

"Here you go, good man," Jonny Hardcastle muttered, passing over some american bills. "Release the Citroen for a CBA tow truck; it'll be here soon. Oh, and here." he passed over another bill. "A, em, consideration, to put the viper up for auction. Soon."

"Okay, I'll need to see those papers again, miss."

"So," Faith said once the guy was satisfied and they left, "can you give me a hint what brings you to town?"

"What else?" Jonny shrugged. "Vampires, babe. Vampires."

"Of course," Faith sighed. "Who is it now?"

"A bunch of nasty customers; call themselves the Brotherhood of the Bat. They can turn themselves into bats, or wolves."

"Oh, sure," Faith said, punching him playfully in the shoulder. "And you believe it? You know the number of vamps who boast that they can pull tricks like that..."

"Well, these vamps do," Jonny confirmed quietly. "I almost had one of them staked in Reno, but he escaped by turning bat on me. They're dangerous."

"Okay, okay, I'll humor you until I meet up with them myself," Faith said. "So, what's their deal?"

"Since I've been tailing them, they've done everything from drugrunning to magic artifacts to bank robbery."

"And they're here now. Any idea why?"

"Nope," Jonny laughed his warm English laugh. "Isn't that always the fun part?"

(Back at Sunnydale High...)

"Hey, Giles," Xander called at Rupert and Celia as they entered the building. "Who's the chick?"

Giles flushed slightly and glared at the flippant teenager. "Hi, Celia Johnson," Celia said, extending a hand. "Rupert's ex-fiancee."

"Oh!" Xander shook the hand enthusiastically, a mischievous grin spreading over his face. "So, how long have you known Giles? And please, spare no embarassing details of what he was like long before we knew him."

Giles' face fell in frustration, but Celia just smiled at him. "Well, we've known each other on and off for more than thirty years, but I think the embarassing stories will have to wait for another time."

"I'll hold you to that," Xander insisted. "How long will you be in Sunnydale? What brings you here?"

"Well, I'm moving here, for the year at least." She shrugged. "Beyond that, well, I'm not really sure."

"Oh?" Xander considered her for a moment. "What do you do?"

"That's none of your..." Giles started.

"I'm a writer," Celia said confidently. "And I do some writing teaching, too."

"Gonna be trying to get a job here?"

"Here? Oh, no." Celia laughed. "I can't work the way I want to at a school. I teach privately." Xander was looking somewhat blank. "Well, why not? There are private music teachers, who teach the piano or some other aspect of the musical arts out of their own homes, so why not the same for the visual arts or the dramatic arts... or the literary arts?"

"Uh, okay," Xander said. "You know, for a moment there I was thinking you would say that you were another Watcher."

Celia smiled feebly and looked over at Giles, who gave her his patented "don't-even-think-about-it" glare while Xander wasn't looking. "I, I wouldn't think of it," Celia said, sighing.
