Section Four: Party time.

Buffy made her way into the Bronze at twenty-five minutes past eight. Since the dance was supposed to start at eight, Buffy hoped that things would just be getting started around now. The club wasn't as full as she was expecting it to be, but there were a fair number of people around - Buffy saw Giles, in a royal blue robe, black mantle, and costume crown. Was he going for King Arthur as in 'First Knight?' Actually, she supposed the costume wasn't any worse than hers, but Giles was no Sean Connery. Buffy waved at him, but her Watcher was watching the far side of the dance floor right now and didn't notice her. Oh well... as much as she liked Giles he was not exactly her first pick of people to talk to at a dance. Teenage hormones got him so cranky.

"Hey, B!" With a greeting like that, Buffy knew who was talking to her before she even turned to look, but she couldn't help but stare at Faith's costume.

The other slayer had gone as Catwoman (the Michelle Pfeiffer interpretation from Batmanny Churns,) and boy had she ever done it right. Every detail was just perfect... black patent leather bodysuit with the white stitching, black leather mask with tiny ears sticking out, thin black 'tail,' and black stiletto heels.

"Hey, your costume looks great," Buffy said.

"Thanks. So do you... only who are you supposed to be?"

Buffy sighed. "Sarah Connor? Linda Hamilton, the Terminator movies?" Faith mouthed a silent oh. "So, what's up so far?"

"Nothing much," Faith confirmed. "Giles is in full grouch mode, and Oz is major pissed at you because someone named Leslie Decowski came as Julia Sullivan?" Faith relayed that message with seemingly no understanding of what it meant. "Are there gonna be many more people showing up?"

"Oh, yeah, plenty. Why?"

"I was hoping there'd be a cute Batman or two."

Buffy swatted Faith in the shoulder. "Down girl. We're on assignment here, remember? Isn't there any batman in the place?"

"There's one, but he'd have done better to go as the Penguin," Faith said.

"That bad??"

Someone came to a stop a few paces away from them, in a elegant, bright red gown. It was Cordelia, who had apparently had the presumption to dress up as Scarlett O'Hara. Cole Palmer, as Rhett Butler, trailed up behind her after a few seconds later to stand by her side.

"Is that you, Faith?" Cordy asked with a somewhat nasty edge in her voice? "I knew it; no-one's more, uh, retro than Faith, and cat costumes are so last year."

Wasn't that just like Cordelia. She had dressed up like a cat last Halloween, and found a way to turn that into an insult. Still, Faith could hold her own. "Hello, Cordelia. Nice to see you again, Cole."

"The pleasure is mine, Miss Summers," Cole said, giving her a half a wink and a bow of the head.

(About ten minutes later.)

Buffy sighed to herself in boredom. Cordy had gone off to flaunt her costume and date to the still-popular crowds in a reasonably transparent attempt to get back with the 'in' crowd. They'll probably take her, Buffy thought. All her old reasons for not speaking to Giles still held; Faith, well, Buffy was starting to realize that she had very little in common with Faith besides the Slaying. Oz was busy playing, and according to Faith, mad that Buffy's costuming suggestion had backfired. And nobody else she really knew seemed to be around.

"Man, I need some new friends," Buffy muttered to herself. But that wasn't really the case. What she needed were her old friends, the friends she had been perfectly satisfied with for years - Willow and Xander. But they hadn't shown up yet, and would probably rather be by themselves all night, doing date stuff. Boy, that was a strange concept - Xander and Willow finally on a date after all this time. It was cool, but still kinda strange. Would it change the dynamic? Would Buffy suddenly be the third wheel? Well, she was techincally a third wheel by default, but... Buffy sighed and tried to move on to another line of thought.

Who was this Leslie Decowski? Buffy had heard the name before, of a junior, but she couldn't place the face. Well, when in doubt, ask. "Who's Leslie Decowski?" she asked of the first person she saw to which the question seemed even vaguely appropriate. This was Jonathon Zimmerly, who she vaguely knew (as far as she could tell, everyone vaguely knew Jonathon, and nobody knew him well,) and who might possibly also be a junior.

Jonathon jumped, making his C-3PO droid armor clank audibly, and pointed across the club. It was a considerable distance, but all of a sudden Buffy had no trouble picking Leslie out. She was a fresh-faced, pretty young girl with short blonde hair, and was wearing an outfit from the wedding singer, not the waitress outfit, but the one from the big party scene; short black sweater over a pink strappy dress, rose pins on the sweater and an onyx pendant on a thin gold choker. She even bore a faint resemblance to Drew Barrymore, Buffy realized as she moved a little closer. So why would Oz be furious at having to dance a traditional dance with this girl??

A wolf whistle rang out from somewhere. Buffy turned around to see what it was about, and stopped short in surprise. Two figures were entering the club side by side - a guy in a suit, bowler hat, and carrying an umbrella, and a girl in a black leather bodysuit with a wide black belt and black heels, her red hair falling down around her neck. It was Willow, and the guy was Xander!!

"Oh, my god!" Buffy said out loud, making her way forward through the crowd, (and pushing aside a few drooling guys as she got close.) "I love the costumes," she said as she got withing hearing range of Willow and Xander. "Avengers, right? Very dramatic - whose idea?"

"Danny's reccomendation," Willow said. Buffy's confusion must have shown, because Willow elaborated, "Partytown-guy. I wasn't convinced at first, but yeah, it's a coolness. A chance to be someone I'm not, like a good friend once told me." Willow smiled cutely.
