Gillian bei Jay Leno im Juni '98Gillian's childhood was pretty "international". First her family lived in Chicago, then they moved to Puerto Rico. A few years later the Anderson family settled down in London. At the age of 11, Gillian finally went back to the US. After having lived in the British capital, she wasn't very happy with finding herself in a small midwestern town. So she kind of revolted against everything: She constantly changed the colour of her hair (the colours ranged from green to purple), got her nose pierced, hung out with punks and couldn't motivate herself to do some work for school.

There was another problem: When she came to England, people made fun of her American accent, back in the US her classmates found her posh British accent strange that she kept for quite a while. Gillian still can talk with that accent and she easily falls back into it when she's "surrounded by Brits".

Luckily, Gillian finally found something that supported her: acting. She was accepted at the Goodman Theatre School in Chicago and later she developed her acting skills at the National Theatre of Great Britain, N.Y. Soon it became obvious that Gillian was really gifted and for starring in the play Absent Friends she won her first award (Theatre World Award).

Then she moved from New York to L.A. and auditioned for some small roles. Thus she didn't keep to her resolutions: "I swore I'd never move to L.A., I also swore I'd never do TV." (Not all resolutions must be kept! ;-))

Although you could say that Gillian is busy with being a single working mom, she takes the time to support the organisation NF. Her younger brother suffers from Neurofibromatosis. Gillian uses her popularity to draw the public's attention to that disease.

When the X-Files gradually became a hit TV show, Gillian learned something that was a shock for everybody: She was pregnant. "I told David, then I told Chris." But the writers and producers found a way to cover her pregnancy as long as possible. It is remarkable that Gillian only missed one episode and appeared on the set after only 10 days of "maternity leave". Her daughter Piper Maru was born on 25 September 1994. Chris Carter, who is Piper's godfather, even named one episode in Season 3 after her. In Season 7 Gillian proved that she's not only a first-class actress: She wrote and directed the episode "All Things (7X17)".

Gillian's taste of music has changed during the years. Whereas she used to listen to bands like Greatful Dead she now prefers bands like Cake, Radiohead and jazzy tunes. She's some part of the music business herself, because she recorded a single with HAL. But according to Gillian that was one-off venture.
