To be honest I didn't know much about Vondie Curtis-Hall when I first saw him in his starring role in Passion Fish playing Sugar LeDoux who wins Afre Woodard's heart.
Then I saw him again in Chicago Hope and got curious. In the video-tape library I came across Gridlock'd. Vondie Curtis-Hall wrote and directed this movie and also plays the part of D-Repper. This movie is worth seeing it. With the late Tupac Shakur and Tim Roth telling the story of a music-trio: Cookie has to be rushed to the ER after having an overdose and while she is fighting with her life the two friends try to find a rehab program which they can attend to get clean. (also see the Vondie Curtis-Hall Filmography). The movie was shown at the Sundance Film Festival and highly claimed by the critics.
Vondie Curtis-Hall's wife Kasi Lemmons is a talented actress and writer/director. She wrote and directed the movie "Eve's Bayou" which stars Samuel L. Jackson as well as Vondie Curtis-Hall.
His guest-starring role as a suicidal transsexual patient in ER brought him an Emmy nomination.
On Broadway he starred in Dreamgirls (a Tony Award winning musical). He also appeared in It's so nice to be civilized and several other Broadway plays.
In 1987 he won the Audelco Award for Best Actor playing in Williams and Walker.
