Sara takes an interest in meeting Danny when her mother pays particular attention to choosing an appropriate outfit for an upcoming date. At the hospital, Austin attempts to choose a vacation spot where she and Danny can spend some time together. But Danny counters that money is tight, and he cannot justify the expense. In lieu of taking a vacation, Austin suggests they have dinner with her daughter.
Wilkes is taken aback when Watters begins trying out potential comedy material for his stand-up act. Though Watters is not considering a career move, he does derive great pleasure from making people laugh. The problem: none of his colleagues think his material is funny. Wilkes broaches the subject to Watters, but the concern is quickly dismissed. McNeil asks Catera out on a lunch date, but, as she has done on previous occasions, declines. Feeling badly, Catera changes her mind and offers to cook Jack dinner.
Kronk notices Wilkes pouring over (what he thinks is) the hospital's administrative budget. But Wilkes explains the paperwork represents his personal 20-year financial plan, which includes his son's schooling. This makes a large impression on Kronk, who has not yet considered how the birth of his child will affect his life. He tells Grad they must begin thinking about their financial future. Grad counters that she will only be on maternity leave for a few months before she returns to work. This takes Kronk by surprise, as he had assumed she would want to stay at home and raise their son.
Catera visits McNeil's brother, Sean, who is serving a jail sentence. Sean apologizes for his behavior at the cafeteria (see episode 5M14), and, during the conversation, gets Catera to smile several times. Before Catera leaves, Sean tells her she is very beautiful.
When the night of the dinner-date arrives, Jack presents Catera with a gift: a day-planner that will help her remember future dates. McNeil proceeds to kiss Catera, but his advances are rebuffed in a friendly fashion. Catera explains she has plans for the evening helping a shut-in. McNeil is unaware she is referring to his brother.
Austin's dinner with Sara and Danny does not go smoothly. Sara asks where Danny went to college, prompting Austin to jump in, explaining how he served his country.
When Catera returns to the jail, she tells Sean that she and McNeil are friends... and that he (Sean) is romanticizing her. Later, McNeil reveals he is aware of Catera's visits, as he noticed her name on the jail sign-in sheet. Catera tells McNeil he has no right to scrutinize her behavior. The argument escalates until Catera orders McNeil out of her office. Later, Shutt tells Catera she is the architect of her own dilemma and concludes her attraction to Sean is really all about Jack. He encourages her to repair the relationship.
One night, unable to sleep, Kronk tells Grad he is going for a walk. He travels to a local bar, where he gets into a physical altercation with a large drunken man. Kronk ends up in the emergency room with a fractured hand. As a result, he is pulled from the surgery roster. Kronk seeks out Shutt for some advice. He explains that, when he was a child, he wanted to become a formula-one racer. He fears that with a baby on the way, he will be stuck being a doctor for the rest of his life. Shutt insists he still has options. Later, Kronk tells an incredulous Grad that he purchased a used sports car.
Austin and Danny discuss their dinner with Sara. Towards the end of the conversation, Austin tells Danny he suffers from an inferiority complex. Danny responds by slamming his hand into the wall beside her head. Later, Danny apologizes for his behavior and presents Austin with a strand of pearls. At first she refuses to accept the gift, explaining how she was once married to a man who was unpredictable and cruel. She admits she fell in love with Danny because he was kind towards her until he lost his temper. Danny expresses his love for Austin, and before he leaves, tells her that she knows where to find him should she change her mind about their relationship.
Watters invites his less-than-enthused colleagues to the comedy club so they can watch his performance before an audience. At first, Watters' jokes land with a resounding thud. But he then used material culled from his life experiences at the hospital. This generates laughter from the audience and chastened looks from the doctors.
Catera makes an attempt to restart her relationship with McNeil by opening a dialogue. Using her new day-planner, she schedules another date. But later, when Sean phones Catera's apartment and begins leaving a voice message on her answering machine, Catera picks up the phone instead of screening the call.
PHILLIP: A rack of lamb. Is that a lamb
that's been tortured first? A lamb with a nice torso?
Look at the rack on that lamb!
JACK: How's Italian sound?
LISA: Like Spanish, only more lyrical?
