Part One
Buffy Summers crossed the street quickly, keeping her head ducked. She
wasn't in the mood to fight, and the demons and vampires in this town, and
in most others, knew her. She was the Slayer, and she was not in a good
mood.

"Oh fun," she muttered as she heard sounds of a struggle outside the
Bronze, the hot all-ages club of Sunnydale. Sometimes she was shocked that
they didn't ban her from the area, her fights always had a tendency to pull
her in and destroy, well, everything. Buffy pulled around the corner. Two
big horned demons were charging on a girl, dressed in sweats and a pair of
beat up sneakers.

The girl let the demons, Buffy too, think they had her cornered. Buffy was
about to launch a surprise attack on the demons, who hadn't noticed her
presence - not noticing her was not a good thing for demons- when the girl
flipped up and kicked them both squarely in the chest. They both fell
backwards into the dumpsters Buffy stood behind. The girl noticed Buffy,
complete with a shocked expression, and smiled. "You must be Sunnydale's
original," she said, then blocked one of the demons punches by grabbing his
throat and launching him across. He hit his friend who was just standing up.

The demons charged yet again, this time spotting Buffy and launching at
both her and the new girl. Buffy immediately drop kicked the one coming at
her, but the girl wasn't so quick. The demon knocked her over. "That wasn't

The demon muttered "Demon's aren't nice."

Buffy grabbed a small ax from inside her coat, and slicing one in half,
hurried to the girls side. She was holding her own again, though, and,
grabbing Buffy's ax, she got hers down too, but not before it gashed her
leg.

Buffy grabbed some bandages from her pocket and immediately set to helping
the girl with her leg. "Who are you?" Buffy asked. "How do you know about
me?"

"My names Kyra. I'm a slayer. You're Buffy right?" the girl, Kyra, didn't
look like she could be more than 16 years old. Of course, Buffy hadn't been
when she was called. For the first time, Buffy felt guilty for saving
Dawn's life instead of her own.

"That's me," her voice was grim.

"You died right?" the girl seemed to know everything about her. "I mean
obviously, 'cause hi. But before that?"

"Yup," Buffy said cheerfully. "How'd you know? Is the Watcher's Council
spilling the dirt on all my many, many mistakes in their eyes?"

"Nope, they didn't tell me," Buffy was puzzled, but she decided not to ask
where Kyra had found out.

"And you were called last summer?" she said instead. Kyra just nodded, as
Buffy helped her stand. They started walking towards Buffy's house, where
Buffy, her sister, Dawn, who had once been a Key to a hell dimension but
was now just a human, and their friend Willow, and ex-witch who'd gotten
addicted and quit cold-turkey, all lived. "How old are you?"

"15," Kyra said, and Buffy felt truly sorry for her. Buffy remembered being
15 and being called. Sure, being the Slayer had changed her for the better,
Double Meat Palace, and a college drop-out, taking care of her sister, who
hadn't existed 2 years ago. Although she loved Dawn, she resented the
Council for taking her life away from her.

But when she was 16, she'd believed she could still have a life. She'd been
with Angel then, a vampire with a soul. She'd had college ahead of her. Her
mom had been alive to take care of Dawn, well, that was how she remembered
it. It wasn't true, of course, the monks who'd created Dawn had put those
memories in her head, but it still felt like a part of her past.

"So you have a sister, right, Dawn?" Kyra asked. "She was a Key?" wow.
This girl had done her homework.

"How do you know all this? And where's your Watcher?"

"Who says I have one? You don't," Kyra smiled at her.

"He's still my Watcher, I think. He's just not here. He's in England,"
Buffy suddenly realized that she hadn't told Kyra that either. "How do you
know?"

"My Watcher's finishing up some old business and told me to meet him here.
I was told that I should just find you, and not worry about it," Kyra
admitted.

"Oh. How does he know?"

"Got me."

"Do you have a place to stay? 'Cause you should stay at my place, at least
until your watcher shows up. I can make up the sofa, and you can have my
bed," Buffy offered.

"Oh, that's okay, the sofa will be fine for me," Kyra said. "Just until my
Watcher gets here."

"When will that be? I mean, not that I'm not in a hospitable mood, I just
want to meet him or her. There are her Watchers, although I've never had
one. Am I babbling?"

"It's okay, my Watcher's a him. And he'll be here tomorrow, with a
colleague, I think," Kyra smiled.

"Cool."

"So, this your house?" Kyra gestured to the house in front of them.

"Yeah, home sweet home." She opened the door, and let her in. She led her
to the living room, where Dawn sat, with Willow, watching Nick At Night.
"Dawn, what are you still doing up?"

"Buffy, I let her," Willow said, looking curiously at Kyra. "And it's only
eleven."

"Slayage was minimal tonight. Oh, this is Kyra. Kyra this is" Buffy said.

"Willow, and Dawn, your sister," Kyra cut in.

"Yeah, well, Dawn's my sister. Will's"

"An ex-witch. I know," Kyra said.

"Right. Uh, guys, Kyra's the new slayer in town," Buffy said, sitting on
the arm of the sofa and putting an arm around her sister.

"Hi," Dawn said, "like Three's Company?"

"Love it," Kyra answered, sitting down to watch with Dawn. Willow stood,
and Buffy followed her into the kitchen.

"So, new slayer?" Willow asked.

"Yeah, it's creepy though. She knows everything. Like that stuff about you?
I never told her that. She knew who I was before I even opened my mouth.
And she started asking questions about Dawn before I mentioned her. And she
Faith knew, but by then it had gotten all over that I was of the living."

"Well, you are pretty well known in demon-land. Maybe the Council"

"Did nothing. She said she didn't hear about it from them the first time I
asked."

"That is weird. Who's her Watcher?"

"She didn't say. Just that he had business and would catch up with her, and

Suddenly the door to the kitchen burst open and Spike, a vampire with a
chip in his head preventing him from biting anything human, came in. He
casually walked over and opened her fridge. "Excuse me? Human who owns the
house in the room," Buffy said, annoyed. Spike had become somewhat of a
friend since he'd been chipped - pun intended - of his hurting the humans
ability. But the whole human thing excluded Buffy, having become chemically
unbalanced, or something, with the rest of her race after un-dying. Spike
smiled, in his bad boy way. That smile had gotten her into a lot of
trouble. Somehow she'd fallen into it's trap and was now in some sort of
hidden relationship with him.

"Relax, luv. Just looking for ice," then Buffy noticed the bruise, blacking
out the eye on the side of his head she hadn't been able to see.

"What happened?" she asked, struggling not to show her concern in front of
Willow.

"Dru's in town, and my baby ain't happy," Spike muttered. Drusilla was the
vampire who'd sired him, and his long-time on and off again girlfriend. The
last time Buffy'd seen her, Spike had chained them both to his crypt, and
Buffy'd somehow gotten knocked out. Something about trying to prove his
love for her. Drusilla had cracked up.

"Oh," Buffy muttered. Domestic violence between vampires wasn't her
jurisdiction.

"Why'd she beat you up?" Dawn asked, as she and Kyra entered the room.
Great, now Spike would say something stupid about his loving Buffy, and
everyone would know from the way Buffy would look, that they were together,
or doing stuff together or that they were something.

"Don't worry, little bit, just a little argument between lovers," Dawn
looked disgusted. Buffy silently thanked Spike in her heart. Then she
noticed Spike eyeing Kyra oddly.

"Spike this is Kyra, new Slayer," she didn't bother introducing Spike to
Kyra, figuring Kyra already knew who he was. After all, she'd known
everyone else, and he was someone the Watcher's Council really would have
told her about.

"Hi," Kyra said, walking closer to him.

"Don't come too close, I bite," Spike warned. Buffy wanted to tell him it
wouldn't work, his feeble attempt at scaring a human, but she figured it
wasn't necessary.

"No you don't. You've got a chip. And anyway, isn't that a Slayer's job,
get close to the things that bite."

"Sorry luv, not interested," Spike retorted.

Buffy blushed. "So that we can kill them," she said, annoyed with Spike.

"Well, got my ice, guess I'll get going now. I'm gonna head back to my
crypt, wait for sun up, then sleep a little, alone," Spike was dropping
hints, but Buffy wouldn't bite.

Buffy muttered. "Dawn go to bed."

Buffy's sister looked disappointed. "But Buffy"

"No buts, tomorrow's a school day. Go to bed."

"I always miss everything," Dawn grumbled, but she obliged and went
upstairs.

As Willow headed to bed herself, Buffy covered the sofa with blankets, and
put pillows at the end. "You don't have to go to bed now, I mean, I'm not
your mom, or your sister, or watcher or whatever"

"No big, I'm kinda beat anyway. Those things we fought weren't the first
monsters of the night for me," Kyra smiled that smile that a slayer gets
after fighting a lot. Kyra was already used to it all, and it had just been

"Cool, we'll talk tomorrow, when your Watcher gets here," Buffy said.

"Sure."
~*~*~*~

Around three in the morning, Buffy woke up with a start, and headed
outside, to do a quick patrolling, something she'd done a lot her mother
died. She had trouble sleeping through the night sometimes. She headed to
the main cemetery, figuring that although she was too late to stop anyone
from rising, she could get anything there, or just visit her mom's grave.

Spike stood outside his crypt smoking his cigarette, when he saw her, he
gestured towards the door. "you coming luv?"

"With you? No," Buffy said.

"What, you're actually gonna patrol?"

"You have a problem with that? 'Cause I can start with you."

"No, no problems here. No problems whatsoever," he paused. "You sure
though?"

"Positive. Spike, I am not coming to your crypt."

"Why not luv?" Spike asked.

"Because Spike! I am not your little play thing! There is nothing
between us! We are not a couple!"

"Then what have you been doing with me almost every night this week?"

"I made some mistakes, everyone does it."

"Keep telling yourself that, luv. You know you don't believe it. I'll be
waiting for you," Spike said, then walked into his crypt like he owned the
place, which, okay, he did. Buffy just kept going.

One hour and three vampires (of the evil kind) later, the crypt door
opened once again. Buffy entered his crypt and saw Spike sitting on his
couch. "Told you you'd come pet," Spike muttered.

"Shut up! Just don't say anything!" Buffy shouted, and he grabbed her.

Pushing her to the ground, with him on top of her, he muttered "okay, we
can do this your way." Buffy's breathing got heavy.

At five, Buffy headed home. She had a few cuts, but they would heal soon.

~*~*~*~

"Hey," Kyra muttered when she opened the door, there was a man sitting next
to her, on the couch, Buffy couldn't tell who it was, but she assumed it
must be her Watcher. Then the man turned around.

"Angel?" Buffy whispered, staring into the face of her ex-boyfriend, the
one the only vampire with a soul. "But what are you doing here?"

"He's the colleague I told you about. Wesley's in the bathroom," Kyra told
her. Buffy just nodded, dumbly. Wesley had been her watcher, for a few
months, along with Faith, the other, well another, Slayer.

"Hey Buffy," Angel said.

"What are you doing here? I mean, not that I'm not happy to see you, but I
thought Wesley said sianara to the Council."

"Well, I did, Buffy, but when Giles was reinstated they came and asked me
to come back. They have changed a great deal," Wesley, said walking into
the room.

"I know, I mean, I un-quit, too," Buffy paused awkwardly. "Where are you
all staying?"

"I'm renting Giles's place from him," Wesley responded.

"That's why he didn't sell? Cause he figured I needed help by some new
slayer and her watcher? I'm fine! I don't need this! Go kill things
somewhere else!"

"That's not why at all. He was going to rent it out to anyone. And we don't
think you do need help. We do," Kyra told her.

"Huh?" Buffy sounded confused.

"Buffy, something's out there. A bridge between the worlds. We can't deal
with this alone. We need your help," Wesley said. "Will you help us?"

Buffy stared deep into her former Watcher's eyes for a moment, then turned
to Angel. "What do I need to do?"

"First, talk to Angel. Kyra and I will go to the house," Wesley said. He
and Kyra stood together, and left. Angel stood, and walked towards Buffy.

"Angel," she whispered.

"Buffy, there's something I need to tell you."

"What?"

"Buffy, it's happened."

"What's happened? What are you talking about?" Buffy was intrigued, and a
little put off by his tone.

"Buffy, if everything goes as planned the Powers That Be they're going to
make me human again."

"Wow," Buffy said, taking that in. "Wow. So this whole apocalypse is big
enough to be your final task or whatever?"

"Yeah."

"Angel, what's going on?" Buffy asked. Angel and Wesley were being very
secretive about the whole thing, usually meaning really, really big
badness. Badness that could get her killed. The first time she'd gotten
lucky, she hadn't been cut, just suffocated, and Xander, another friend of
theirs, had done CPR. The second time Willow had done magic after she'd
been gone for months, and that wasn't happening again, what with all
non-magic Willow.

"You remember Ethan Rayne?" Angel asked softly.

"How could I forget?" Buffy asked smirking.

"He's assembling something, bringing hell to Earth."

"Nothing new," Buffy murmured. "I always stopped him and every other
magician before."

"Yeah, but now they're all together," Angel said. "He brought a bunch of
people back, a lot of Slayers, magicians and watchers and other powerful
people, and he's turned them all evil. He's preparing to launch an attack,
and all their powers have been doubled."

"What?" Buffy whispered, shocked. "Who?"

"Buffy"

"Give me names Angel."

"Kendra, Merrick, Pike, Jenny, India, Lucy. And he turned some living
people evil," Angel paused, "Riley." Buffy's face shown clear horror. These
people had all been close to her at one point. Kendra was the Slayer called
after Buffy's death, when she'd died Faith had been called. Merrick had
been her first watcher, and had been killed very early on. Buffy had only
good memories of Merrick, who had awakened her to the truth. Pike had been
her L.A. boyfriend, prior to Angel, who'd helped her a lot, but had a habit
of running away. Jenny had been Giles's girlfriend, a gypsy, and a witch,
who Angel had murdered viciously when he'd lost his soul. And Riley, Riley
was her ex-boyfriend. The first man other than Angel she'd truly loved,
well, come pretty close to loving anyway.

"Buffy, those are only the people you knew and liked. There's other people,
well, vampires, and demons you killed and then there are people and things
you never met"

"Angel who?"

"Evil Darla, Drusilla, the Master, the Judge, and somehow, the soul-less
me."

"What? I have to kill you again?! Among everyone else you?"

"I'll take care of me, but Buffy"

"WHAT???" Buffy yelled, scared as hell. How could they win? How could she
fight those people? How could she kill the people she loved?

"There's one more person" Angel paused painfully. "your mom."
