Lucasfilm have announced that the Star Wars
Trilogy Special Edition is to be released on both
video AND Laserdisc!!

The Star
Wars Trilogy Special Edition will be
available on video Aug. 26 in both regular and
widescreen editions.
The videocassettes will be sold initially at more
than 100,000 retail outlets across North America,
but only for a limited time. After a period of 97
days--on Nov. 30--Twentieth Century Fox Home
Entertainment will no
longer accept retail orders for the Special
Edition and it will be placed on moratorium.
Information
about the international release of the videos and
of a laser disk version will be made available
later.
The
availability of the Special Editions of Star
Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return
of the Jedi on video will give fans of the
saga the opportunity to own the definitive
edition of the trilogy--the one that creator
George Lucas always saw in his mind's eye. Lucas
has said that he had to make creative compromises
during the production of Star Wars because
of the limited production time and the
traditional effects technology then available. So
nearly two decades later, Lucas returned to the
original trilogy and enhanced the classic films
to match his original vision using computer tools
that had been developed in the meantime by his
own company, Industrial Light & Magic. The
premier special effects company generated
creatures and cityscapes that were added to the
original footage and provided digital fixes to
the original optical effects. In addition,
Lucasfilm's Skywalker Sound was able to digitally
remaster the soundtracks of the three films to
meet the high standards of modern sound systems.
"After the theatrical release of the Star
Wars Trilogy Special Edition created such
unexpected excitement and enthusiasm around the
world, we wanted to make the video available for
everyone who would like to own and enjoy
it," said Gordon Radley, President of
Lucasfilm Ltd.
The Star
Wars Trilogy Special Edition will be
available in the regular full-screen format for
$49.98 ($59.98 in Canada). Each film will be
available individually for $19.98 ($22.98 in
Canada). A special Platinum Widescreen Edition
also will be available for $59.98 ($74.98 in
Canada.)
All
three cassettes will include a special
behind-the-scenes segment on the making of the
Special Editions. These will include interviews
with George Lucas and key crew and creative
personnel including computer artists at ILM.
The Star
Wars Trilogy Special Edition will be sold in
iconographic "keepsake" packaging. The
three cassettes will come in a foil wrapped,
two-piece slanted case that follows the
distinctive contours of Darth Vader's helmet.
