Monkey Business- Entertainment Weekly March 16, 2001
How does a $75 million film starring a bankable actor sidle into theaters unnoticed and immediately drop dead? It's a question the makers of Monkeybone, starring Brendan Fraser and directed by Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas), are trying to answer in the wake of their miserable $2.7 million opening two weeks ago.
Two of the filmmakers admit that Monkeybone, a dark comedy about an animator trapped in the world he created, was a tough sell. But they argue that the movie's distributor, Twentieth Century Fox, gave up on the project after the June departure of chairman Bill Mechanic, who greenlit the film. (Fox declined to comment for this story.)
According to production sources, Fox took Monkeybone from Selick and recut it after a disastrous screening at which the sound system failed. Executive producer Chris Columbus also did an edit in an attempt to make the movie more mainstream before giving it back to Selick.
"They talked about opening the film in October, then Thanksgiving, then Christmas, then Martin Luther King's birthday, then spring break, then Presidents' weekend, then the weekend after," says one of the filmmakers. With only two weeks to launch an advertising campaign and a decision to delay previewing the picture for weekly magazine critics, the filmmakers say Monkeybone was doomed. Says one, "A week and a half before the movie was supposed to come out, the ads were disappearing"; the Sunday before it opened, Fox took out only one print ad, in the L.A. Times.
Fox brass, which couldn't have guessed that the film would recieve favorable reviews from the L.A. Times, The New York Times, and Entertainment Weekly (reviews in other parts of the country were mixed at best), reportedly told the filmmaters, "Its going to look bad on Monday. This will make it look less bad." Adds a source, "If you do your best [to market the movie] and it bombs, go ahead and blame the film. But this is crazy. I mean, is this worse than Get Crater or See Spot Run?"

Scream 3 DVD-July 10, 1999
The third and final chapter in the blockbuster Scream horror trilogy has just been released on video and DVD. If you pick up a copy of the DVD you can see clips of Rose from behind the scenes on the first one. The clips are different than the ones on the Scream DVD. It is not any sort of interview but it shows her hanging out with Neve Campbell by the police Jeep before a shot wearing a big hat (probably to block the sun) as well as some other shots. The Scream Tilogy Box Set is expected to come onto DVD in September with a bonus cd of extra footage, including some screen tests from the stars of the original (maybe Rose's???). It is going to be priced somewhere under $100.
Ready to Rumble Release Date-December 16, 1999
Well Rose's Untitled Wrestling Movie now has a title, Ready to Rumble. The comedy, also starring David Arquette and John Goodman also has a release date which is not too far away. The 14th of April is quite an ambitous release date for a film that has just recently started shooting, but hopefully they will meet it.
The Last Stop Premiere-September 11, 1999
Apparently, Rose's latest movie, The Last Stop is finished with the filming and editing processes. The movie is set to premiere in London at the London Screenings on October 16th. It is not known yet whether or not the movie will be released in the US. The movie is about several snowbound strangers who discover there is a murderer amongst them.
1999 MTV Video Music Awards-August 30, 1999
With the 1999 Video Music Awards just over a week away, I feel it necessary to warn you that Rose McGowan will not be in attendance. Although Marilyn Manson is nominated for 2 awards for The Dope Show, he will not be able to attend because he will be out of the country at the time. I guess Rose will not get a chance to top her '98 VMA dress.
Coma White Music Video-August 21, 1999
It seems that the Marilyn Manson music video featuring Rose McGowan and Marilyn Manson as Jackie O and JFK during the assasination has been postponed again. This time it is due to the recent death of JFK Jr. No release date has been set, so we'll just have to hope that the headlines clear up so that they will decide it is an appropriate time to release the video.
Ellipsis-August 6, 1999
Rose is slated to appear in another movie set to film this fall. It is called Ellipsis, and is written and directed by Karin Thayer, the same writer and director of Rose's 1997 short, Seed. The filming is set to take place in Los Angeles and San Fransisco.
Marilyn Manson Music Videos-July 30, 1999
Rose's fiance, Marilyn Manson, has been getting a lot of publicity from some of his videos. His video for "The Dope Show" from Mechanical Animals was nominated for Best Cinematography in the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards. This is the only award he is nominated for, and he is not expected to perform like last year, so whether or not he and Rose will attend is not yet known. Also, his video for "Coma White", featuring Manson and Rose acting out the Kennedy assasination; Rose playing Jacki O and Manson as Kennedy, has been pushed back to a later release date. Manson felt that it was inappropriate to air the video in light of the recent school shootings since the video shows scenes of an assasination. Its release date is as yet unknown.

Rose McGowan NOT in Archie-July 23, 1999
With all of young Hollywood interested in the new Archie movie, it seems Rose would be among the people in line for the cast, especially when she was listed as Tommy O'Haver's (writer/director) pick to play the part of Veronica. But apparently this was just a rumor. In reality, none of the roles have yet been cast. Here is what Comics2Film posted after they spoke with producer, Ben Myron:
Although Myron didn't wish to publicize any of the current candidates, he did rule some out. Giovanni Ribisi (The Mod Squad) is not under consideration for the role of Archie. Myron had a good laugh also when we told him that Rose McGowan was rumored for Veronica. "Not a chance!" Myron told us.
Marilyn Manson's Holywood-July 18, 1999
Looks like Marilyn Manson is finally making that movie that he was talking about. Here's what Variety reported:
Heavy-metal rocker Marilyn Manson is poised to join the legion of musicians moving to the feature-film beat. Manson has made a deal with New Line for ``Marilyn Manson's Holywood,'' a far-out feature he'll co-write with Robert Parigi. Manson will star in the film, which is said to be highly visual and reminiscent of Pink Floyd's ``The Wall.'' Manson will also do the soundtrack, which he'll control under his Interscope-based label. Manson pitched the concept to the studio and with Parigi wrote a treatment. They're scripting in earnest, hoping to get the pic under way this year. It'll mark the screen starring debut of Manson, who cameoed in ``Jawbreaker,'' the film that starred his offscreen partner, Rose McGowan. Hopes are for McGowan to join him in ``Holywood.''
Archie Movie-July 14, 1999
For those of you Archie fans out there, rejoice! Universal Pictures is making the movie Archie, written by Tommy O'Haver. The casting process has begun and the part of Betty has been cast as Melissa Joan Hart (TV's Sabrina the Teenage Witch), while the Veronica part is uncast yet. Rose is being considered, as well as Charisma Carpenter. The last I heard Rose was close to signing, but they might fall back on Charisma if she decides against it. It should be out later this year.
MTV-June 24, 1999
Some of you may remember the little Courtney Love/Rose McGowan battle that occured earlier this year on the Hole/Marilyn Manson tour. Well at this year's MTV Movie Awards Courtney appeared to still have hard feelings on the subject. She was asked what she would do if Rose slapped her. She also commented on Rose's self esteem issues. If you want to see the short interview on RealVideo, click here.
Mr. Showbiz-May 30, 1999
Some information which seems to clear up the plot about Monkey Bone a little more:
Those darn agents also had it pretty easy when finding an actress who could convincingly play Kitty in Monkey Bone. Variety reports that catlike starlet Rose McGowan will personify the half-female, half-feline inhabitant of Dark Town, the creation of a dying animator (Brendan Fraser).
Also, the Internet Movie Database has categorized this movie under the comedy section so I presume it will not be so spooky.
Yahoo News-May 25, 1999
Just a little more information on the Monkey Bone to confirm what most of you already knew.
Rose McGowan's joined the cast of Fox's ``Monkey Bone,'' the film scripted by Sam Hamm and directed by Henry Selick. She'll play Kitty, a character who's half woman, half cat, joining Brendan Fraser and Whoopi Goldberg. McGowan was last seen in the black comedy ``Jawbreaker,'' ``Scream'' and ``The Doom Generation,'' and will soon be seen in ``Southie.'' She's repped by UTA and Hoffman-Polone.
Monkey Bone-May 21, 1999
Rose McGowan is signed on to the new spooky flick, Monkey Bone. The film also stars Bredan Fraser and Whooopi Goldberg. Nothing else is known about it at this time except that she has just been cast, so it probably won't begin shooting for about a month or two because Rose McGowan has just started shooting The Last Stop in Canada.
