Pallet
Town
Pallet Town is the starting point of your journey, you
start in your room. There will be a PC in the top left
hand corner go check it out and withdraw the Potion (It
will come in handy.) Walk to the grassy area to the
north, and Prof. Oak will tell you to come back to his
lab. You will be given the choice between 3 Pokemon,
Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. No matter what you
choose, your rival (lets call him Gary since thats
his name on the show), will always pick the Pokemon that
has an advantage against yours. For Example:
| Your
Choice |
Gary's
Choice |
| Bulbasaur |
Charmander |
| Charmander |
Squirtle |
| Squirtle |
Bulbasaur |
Note: Bulbasaur is
the best choice for beginners. Squirtle is the one that
lots of people pick because he will get quite strong as
the game geos on. Charmander would have to be the
strongest of the three, but the most difficult to raise
early on, because early enemies arent effected much
by his fire attacks.
After you select your Pokemon, you will battle Gary. If
you win, you will gain a little experience and your
pokemon will grow a level also you will score some cash.
Both yours and Gary's Pokemon have about 2 moves. 1 is
Tackle or Scratch, and the other is a move that lowers
their defense or attack. Use the attack that actually
takes energy off the other pokemon, that should kill Gary
since he usually wastes his time on the attacks that
lower defense or attack. Once you win or lose, go to his
house (its to the right of your house), to get a Town Map
from his sister. Now, you will be set to go off to
Viridian City, by going north through Route 1.
Viridian City
The PokeMart has a parcel for Prof. Oak that you need to
bring to him. When you give it to him he gives you the
Pokedex which allows you to play linked games and trade.
Bring Oak's Parcel back to Prof. Oak in Pallet Town. You
can catch 2 pokemon on the way to Prof. Oaks lab but you
have to give him the parcel before you can buy some
pokeballs, the pokemon are Pidgey and Rattata.. Now, go
back to Viridian, buy whatever items you feel is
neccessary from the Pokemart (just some pokeballs,
potions and antidotes) and go through Route 2 to get to
the Viridian Forest.
Viridian Forest
Here, you will fight a few trainers, but don't worry, it
builds up experience real fast, and you can catch Pokemon
to. If you have already traded pokemon building up levels
to fast can be bad, since the traded ones won't obey you
early on, but your original ones will stay loyal. If you
bought Pokeballs, you can capture some pokemon. Depending
on what version, you'll either get a lot of
Caterpie/Metapods with the blue version or Weedle/Kakunas
with the red version. If you're lucky, you can find a
Pikachu. (Pikachu is really rare it takes a lot of
patience to find one just keep wandering in grass and
fight heaps of caterpie/weedles untill you finally see a
pikachu. It took me about an hour untill I finally caught
a Pikachu)
Pewter City
This is the location of the first Gym. The trainer here
is Brock. He uses rock-type Pokemon, his pokemon are
geodude Lv.12 and Onix Lv. 14. If you chose a Squirtle,
you'll win fast. Bulbasaur does pretty good too.
Charmander will get his butt whipped, so over level him
or use other pokemon. Defeating Brock will get you a
Boulder Badge and also TM34 (bide), which will let you
use FLASH any time and raises the Power of all your
Pokemon a little.
Note: When a badge lets you use FLASH or CUT etc., it
doesn't mean you can use it right away. You need to find
the HM that teaches that ability. Use it to give that
ability to a Pokemon and then you can use it.
There are several things to do in Pewter. Pewter is one
of the few cities where you don't have to do anything to
get out of that city, in order to get to the next one.
It's a good thing to talk to everyone, explore suspicious
areas, and check out all the buildings. As in every RPG,
it will usually end up with you getting rewards. When
you've finished in Pewter City, take Route 3 to get to
Mt. Moon. If your Pokemon are in bad condition, use an
item to heal them or just make the trip back to the
Pokecentre in Pewter.
Mt. Moon
Outside of Mt. Moon is a Pokecentre. In there, there is a
man who will try to sell you a Magikarp for $500.
DONT buy it just leave it alone. Magikarp is the
worst Pokemon. BUT once he evolves at level 20, he turns
into a Gyrados. I think he's as strong as some level 30
Pokemon even. But, don't get it right now. you can get
heaps for free later.
Not much to say about Mt. Moon. Find your way out.
<Try and catch the rare Clefairy's in the deeper
sections of the mountain> There are plenty of items
lying around, and trainers protecting them as well. Some
trainers give you special items when you defeat them.
Bring items along or go back to the Pokecentre to heal
your pokemon. There is one person who you MUST battle
that isn't too tough, but when you win, will give you a
special item, one of 2 fossils. They are the Dome and
Helix Fossils. Either one of those fossils will allow you
to get a Rare Pokemon when you get to the Cinnebar Island
(the pokemon you get are: Dome Fossil-kabuto and Helix
Fossil-omynmite). For now, when you get to a PC, store
the fossil, since you won't be able to use it for a
while.
Cerulean
City
In this city, Misty is the trainer at the Gym. She uses
water type Pokemon, her pokemon are Staryu Lv. 18 and
Starmie Lv. 21 If you have a Bulbasaur, he'll make short
work of them. Squirtle does average, and Charmander the
worst. Like I said, Charmander isn't good early on. If
you captured a Pikachu already, he'll do well also. It's
important that you defeat Misty, because you will get the
Cascade Badge. It lets you use CUT and Pokemon up to
level 30 will obey you. You will also get TM 11
bubblebeam. That means that your Pokemon won't ignore
your orders in battle unless they are much higher than
level 30. Explore a little. In this city, there's a Bike
Shop that will sell you a Bike for $1,000,000,000 or it
might be 1,000,000 but what ever it is you wont be
able to afford it. Don't buy it, you can get a coupon,
which will get you a free bike, in the next town. There's
a house with a cop blocking it. This will be important
later. Gary is at the bridge, so be prepared to fight.
There's a few trainers on the bridge to that you must
defeat to get to Bill's Sea Cottage. Defeat them and get
a prize which is a nugget.
Sea Cottage
Bill, the Pokemaniac lives here. He invented the Pokemon
storage system (the place where pokemon go when you store
them via PC). He is stuck in the form of a Pokemon until
you help him turn back to a human. After you help him,
you will recieve an SS Anne Ticket. You can also check
out his PC and get the info on the evolved forms of Evee.
After you helped him, when you go to a PC, it will now
say Bill's PC instead of someone's PC. Return to Cerulean
City when you've finished in his cottage.
Cerulean City (continued)
After you've helped Bill, the house that was guarded by
the cop is now accessible. Talk to the people inside and
they will tell you that Team Rocket trashed their house
and stole the TM that contained Dig. He's right outside
in the backyard. Defeat him and youll get the TM.
Travel South and there will be 3 buildings there. There's
a daycare centre, here you can leave a Pokemon and have
the person raise it's level (you will be charged $100
minimum). You have to leave it there for a while before
it grows because every step you take it gets one EXP.
point. For every level it's raised, it will cost you
another $100. The daycare centre is great for low-level
Pokemon, they grow faster than a Pokemon who is already
strong. There is another building to the right, it has an
underground tunnel in it that will take you to Vermilion
City and the SS Anne. Below the daycare centre is the
city gates which leads to Saffron City, which is between
Cerulean and Vermilion City on the Map. You can't go
through yet. City gates are everywhere, and are not
accesible until you do a favor for the guards (which is
buy them some water from Celadon City Mart).
Vermilion City
Vermilion is the location of the third gym. The leader is
Lt. Surge. He uses Electric Pokemon, his pokemon are
Voltorb Lv. 21, Pikachu Lv. 18 and Raichu Lv. 24.
Electric Pokemon are crap against Grass Pokemon. Water
will do the worst. Fire is alright. Defeating Lt. Surge
will get you the Lightning Badge and TM 24 thunderbolt.
It increases your Pokemon's speed slightly, and lets you
use FLY. You won't be able to get to Surge however, until
you get the HM 01-cut (see SS Anne). Vermilion City has
some neat stuff. Check out all the buidlings you can.
There's a Pokemon club where you will get a Bike Voucher.
Take it back to the bike shop in Cerulean City to get a
free Bike. Now you can travel a lot faster. Put it at the
top of your item list, because you will use it a lot
(Bike's can be used only outdoors and in caves). Go back
to Vermilion City and get an old rod from the man in the
house near the SS Anne. Now you can catch as many
Magikarps as you want when you fish in the water with the
old rod. Catch a Magikrap and leave it at the daycare.
Now go back and go on board the SS Anne.
SS Anne
You will have many opponents to fight, but you dont
have to fight them. But it's best to do so to get some
items and experience. Most of the SS Anne's passengers
quarters have trainers who will fight you. Most of them
use Water Pokemon to. There are many visible items as
well as hidden items so search hard for them in the
rooms. Gary is on the ship to. The Captain of the ship is
sick. Help him <rub rub??!!>(kinky), and get HM
01-cut. Getting HM 01-cut lets you fight Lt Surge.
Vermilion City (continued)
Now that you have cut, teach it to one of your pokemon. I
don't know who you can teach it to for sure, but
ground-type can learn it (eg. Sandshrew, Charmander)and
grass-type can learn it to (eg. Bulbasaur), and a few
others. The good thing about HMs is that they can be used
an unlimited amount of times, where as with TMs, you can
only use them once, and many of them you will only find 1
of in the game. Cut can also be used as an attack in
battle, but it is pretty weak. Teach it to a pokemon and
you will be able to fight Lt. Surge and win the Thunder
badge. East of Vermilion City is Diglett's Cave.
Diglett's Cave
This is a short path that will take you back to another
part of Pewter City that you couldn't get to before.
Diglett's cave is filled with Digletts (derr). Although
there arent many Dugtrios in there, but if you do
find one they are very hard to catch. You should try and
capture one, theyre the best and at a certain
level, they learn DIG which is a move you can use in and
out of battle. Out of battle, you can use it like an
Escape Rope and get it out of caves and some buildings,
and will take you back to the Pokecentre you visited
last. DIG in battle is an awesome move. It can often kill
a pokemon in one hit.
Pewter City (from
Diglett's Cave)
Here, you will get the HM 05-flash from one of Oak's
Aides in one of the houses. He will give it to you only
if youve caught 10 pokemon. Also, you can get many
items that you missed because you didn't have CUT before.
Now go back to Cerulean City so you can get to Rock
Tunnel. By using cut you can get into the back of the
museum, use it right next to the museum and go into the
house. It will take you behind the counter of the museum
so you can talk to some Scientists. Talk to the top one
and you will get Old Amber. Store this in your PC. It is
a fossil just like the Helix and Dome Fossil, which can
be used to get a rare pokemon later (the rare pokemon is
Aerodactal).
Rock Tunnel
To get here, you have to defeat some trainers. Teach
flash to an Electric pokemon that you don't like. Flash
is a crap move and you'll only use it once to see in the
dark at Rock Tunnel. Flash isn't really an attack. It's
one of those moves that lowers defence or attack or
something like that in battle. While in the tunnel you
will fight trainers and find items.
Lavender Town
There's no gym in this town but it is the location of
Pokemon Tower, where pokemon go when they die. Don't try
going in there just yet theres no point. Talk to all the
people in the town and you will find that Mr. Fuji is
missing. He is at the top of Pokemon Tower. If you go in,
on the 2nd floor, you will have to fight Gary.
Continue after that, and you will fight a heap of
Channellers (ghost-pokemon trainers) and a bunch of ghost
pokemon. You can't fight ghost pokemon unless you have a
Silph Scope which IDs them, which you get from
Celadon City. So don't go in the tower just yet. Just go
West of Lavender Town. There will be a City Gate to
Saffron City (which you still can't use) and an
underground tunnel that will take you to Celadon City.
Celadon City
This is where the 4th gym is. The trainer here
is Erika. She uses grass-type pokemon, her pokemon are
Victreebel Lv. 29, Tangela Lv. 24 and Vileplume Lv. 29.
If you have a Charmander, you will defeat her quick. You
can match grass against grass if you have a Bulbasaur
hell do average. Squirtle's water attacks will not
be effective against, so just use non-water attacks like
tackle or bite. Also, since Squirtle is a water-type
pokemon, their grass attacks will kill him fast. You will
be awarded a Rainbow Badge and TM 21, megadrain, for
winning. The badge makes it so level 50 pokemon obey you,
and lets you use strengh. To get to here, you will need
to use cut on the bushes South of Celadon. In her gym,
you will find many trainers. Take your time to gain more
EXP. points. Celadon is home to a very large shopping
mall where you can buy things for your Pokemon. On the
top floor, there are vending machines where you can buy
Water, Soda Pop, or Lemonade. If you've been talking to
the guards at the city gates, you'd know you need to buy
them water. Buy one for a guard, and give it to him. He
will share some with the other guards, and you can now go
through all the city gates. Also on the top floor, there
is a girl who is thirsty. Buy her some water, give it to
her, and she will give you TM !!!! icebeam then give her some sodapop and she will
give you TM !!!! rockslide, now give her some
lemonade and she will give you TM 49 tri attack. In the
mall, you can get a Stone that evolves certain pokemon.
Also, there is a Pokedoll, which will get you mimic
later, or help you RUN from combat. You can also get
Eevee by going into the back of one of the buildings.
Once you have given the water to the guards, you can go
to Saffron. But first, back to the Lavender Town
business. If you've been around, you know what the Game
Corner is. If you want to play, you need to get a Coin
Case from a guy in the Diner. You might have heard rumors
that Game Corner is run by Team Rocket if so there right.
You also might have heard there is a secret switch. Go to
Game Corner and talk to the guy facing the wall. He is a
member of Team Rocket and will fight you. Defeat him and
you can press the switch behind the poster. It will open
a door to the left, which leads to the basement levels of
Game Corner.
Game
Corner
In Game Corner's basement, there are some Team Rocket
trainers to fight, and items to find. Here's how you get
to the boss, Giovanni the leader of Team Rocket. Go down
the stairs to the 4th Basement Level. Then find and fight
a Team Rocket guy who mentions the Lift Key. The lift key
will make it so you can operate the elevator on the lower
right-hand corner of every floor (except 3rd Basement)
now you can get to Giovanni. You might have to talk to
the man from Team Rocket after you beat him so you get
the Lift Key. Now, take the elevator to get to the bottom
floor and fight Giovanni. Defeat him and get the Silph
Scope. Now, you can identify/fight ghost pokemon in
Lavender Town.
Now you can go to
Lavender Town to rescue Mr Fuji. Also in Celadon City is
HM 02-fly. It is located left of Celadon City, near the
city gate going to the cycling path. Get to it's location
by cutting the bush in the small path that is close to
the City Gates. Go up and left, through the house. It
will take you to a small hallway that is right above the
guardhouse. Then, there will be a house. Go in it and the
girl inside will give you FLY. Now, you can quickly
return to cities that you have already visited without
having to journey long distances to return.
Lavender Town (continued)
We here at Lavender Town rescuing someone for 2 Reasons.
There's a sleeping Snorlax blocking the route from
Lavender to Fuschia (Routes 12-15) and another Snorlax
blocking the Bike Path that takes you from Celadon City
to Fuschia City (Routes 16-18). We need to rescue Mr.
Fuji, who is trapped in pokemon tower, and he will give
you a pokeflute. A PokeFlute is an item that will wake up
the Snorlax and can be used to wake up sleeping pokemon
in battle (very useful). Mr. Fuji is on the top floor.
With the PokeFlute, you can wake up a Snorlax and attempt
to capture it. There are only 2 in the whole game, so you
should save before you wake it up. It sleeps a lot, so it
should make it easier. You should go straight to Fuschia
City because Koga is easy to beat then Sabrina. You might
wanna get a ghost pokemon for later when you fight
Sabrina (because she uses psychic pokemon, which are weak
against ghosts).
Fuchsia
City
This is the location of the 5th gym. The
leader is Koga, who uses crap pokemon, his pokemon are
Koffing Lv. 37, Muk Lv. 39, Koffing Lv. 37 and Weezing
Lv. 43. You can get into this gym right away. But inside
there are invisible walls, so you'll have to go pretty
much blind through the maze. If you look close enough,
you'll notice that the floor has lines going from left to
right. You can tell what is a wall and what isn't by the
lines on the floor. If they go up-down, then thats a
piece of wall. It's pretty simple to figure out. You will
get there eventually if you run into the wall enough
times. After you defeat Koga you get the Soul Badge and
TM 6 toxic. The badge lets you use SURF and the defense
of your Pokemon will be raised a little.
Safari
Zone
If you do some
exploring in Fuschia City, you'll find out
somethings wrong with the warden of the Safari
Zone. He's missing his gold teeth. You can find them in
the Safari Zone next to the Secret House. In the Secret
House, if you can get there, you get HM 03-surf. When you
bring the Gold Teeth back to the Warden, give it to him
and he will give you HM 04-strengh. It is used to move
boulders, and can be a pretty strong attack in battle.
You can use it to move the Boulder in the Warden's house
and get the TM in the pokeball. Next Door to the Warden's
house is the fisherman's older brother (the fisherman
from Vermilion City). Talk to him and he'll give you a
Great Rod to fish with. You can catch few better water
pokemon with it. If you came to Fuschia City through
Routes 12-15 (from Lavender to Fuschia), you might have
met the fisherman's oldest brother. Talk to him and get
the Super Rod, which will catch you some even better
water pokemon.
Saffron
City
This is the location of
the 6th gym, which is run by Sabrina. She uses
Psychic pokemon, her pokemon are Kadabra Lv. 38, Mr Mime
Lv. 37, Venomoth Lv. 38 and Alakazam Lv. 43. She will
give you a Marsh Badge and TM 46 psywave if you defeat
her. The Marsh Badge makes pokemon up to level 70 pokemon
obey you. You can't get into this gym at first. If you've
been to Saffron before you finished in Pokemon Tower,
you'd have seen a tall building (Silph Co.) with the
entrance guarded. If you rescued Mr. Fuji, you can now go
in. Here, you will take on Team Rocket trainers and
rescue Silph Co. If you beat Giovanni again and talk to
the president of Silph Co. he gives you a Master Ball.
The Master Ball will catch any pokemon, first try
everytime. But you only get one, so save it (for Mewtwo).
If you talk to a man just before you go into the room to
fight Giovanni he will give a Lapras.
If you don't wanna
go there right away, you can find the Psychic's house it
is along the bottom road. The person there will give you
TM !!!! psychic. Another place you can
visit is the Fighting Dojo (its right next door to
the gym). It use to be the Pokemon Gym, but they lost
their title, and now operate outside of the Pokemon
League. In there, you will fight a few fighting-type
pokemon trainers. Defeat the boss of the gym and you get
a free pokemon. You will have to pick between Hitmonchan
or Hitmonlee. There's only one of each in the game, so
this is the only time you can getit. When you defeat
Giovanni and Sabrina, you should go back to Fuschia City
to get Seafoam Islands
Seafoam Islands
Not much to walkthrough here. Just find your way through
the cave to get out the other end so you can go to
Cinnebar Island. If you try to swim inside the cave,
there might be strong currents that will push you in the
wrong directions. To stop that, look for boulders in the
cave and use strengh to push them into the holes that are
right beside them, then you go in the whole after them.
The rocks will act as a dam and the current will be gone,
so you can surf in the water and maybe get out quicker.
If you up from where you fell in the water theres a
secret pokemon. It's one of the rare birds, the icebird
Articuno!
Cinnebar Island
Cinnabar Island is where the 7th gym is
located. The leader is Blaine, his pokmon are Growlithe
Lv. 42, Ponyta Lv.40, Rapidash Lv. 42 and Arcanine Lv.
47, he will give you a Volcano Badge and TM 38 fireblast
if you win. The badge makes it so your pokemon's special
abilities increase a little. Blaine specializes in
fire-type pokemon. You won't be able to get into the gym
until you find the Secret Key. The Secret Key is located
in the Old Mansion right above the lab. It has many fire
pokemon and poisonous pokemon. Make plenty of room for
items too.
Also on the island is a lab, where you can finally
resurrect those Helix and Dome Fossils, as well as the
Old Amber you got from the back of the Museum in Pewter
City. Ressurecting the fosil will take a little bit of
time though. When defeated Blaine, surf North and to
Pallet Town, and go through Pallet Town and go to
Viridian City.
Viridian City (continued)
Viridian City the location of gym 8. If you explored here
in the beginning, you'd have found that the that the gym
was not accessible. Now, you will be allowed to enter. In
the Gym is a bunch of those spin-tiles the same ones that
were in Game Corner's basement. If you go correct way you
will meet the 8th Gym Leader. The Gym Leader is Giovanni.
You already know what kind of pokemon he uses but the
pokemon he uses in this battle are, Rhyhorn Lv. 45,
Dugtrio Lv. 42, Nidoqueen Lv. 43, Nidoking Lv. 45 and
Rhydon Lv. 50. Beat him and you get the Earth Badge and
TM 27 fissure. The Earth Badge makes pokemon at any level
obey you. Fissure is a one hit K.O. move. It misses a lot
but could work pretty well with the right pokemon. Now,
journey West to the Pokemon League. You must have all 8
badges, plus a pokemon with surf and a pokemon with
strengh to get to Indigo Plateau. You need surf to cross
water so you can get to the cave that leads to the
Pokemon League. In the cave, you'll need strengh to move
boulders to activate switches which operate certain
doors. If you along the right path, you will see a
pokemon. Save before you fight it because it is very
rare. The pokemon is a Moltres, a rare fire bird pokemon.
You can capture it with almost any Pokeball, but don't
use the Master Ball. When you get through the cave, you
will see a building. That's a Pokemart. If you are there,
you have reached Indigo Plateau.
Indigo Plateau
Inside is a Pokemart and Pokecentre. Here, you can
deposit/withdraw items or pokemon, and you can
trade/fight with other players with the game link cable.
In order to defeat the Elite Four, you will have to rely
on items. Because you will have to face 4 Trainers with
level 50+ Pokemon, one after another and you cant
go to the pokecentre and heal your pokemon either. Lose
once, you'll have to start all over.
The first trainer
is Lorelei she uses ice type pokemon, her pokemon are,
Dewgong Lv.54, Cloyster Lv.53, Slowbro Lv.54, Jynx Lv.56
and Lapras Lv.56.
The second one is Bruno
he has rock type pokemon, his pokemon are Onix Lv.53,
Hitmonchan Lv.55, Hitmonlee Lv.55, Onix Lv.56, Machamp
Lv.58.
The next trainer is Agatha she uses ghost pokemon, her
pokemon are, Gengar Lv.56, Golbat Lv.56, Haunter Lv.55,
Arbok Lv.58 and Gengar Lv.60.
The last of the elite
four is Lance the dragon trainer, his pokemon are,
Gyarados Lv.58, Dragonair Lv.56, Dragonair Lv.56,
Aerodactyl Lv.60 and Dragonite Lv.62.
Upon defeating the
Elite Four, they crown you league champion. That is, they
would if you didn't have 1 more trainer to face. He
defeated the Elite four just before you did (like
everything else). Thats right Gary is the pokemon
master, he is pretty tough, but if you have recovery
items, you should be fine. His pokemon are, Pidgeot,
Alakazam and Rhydon. His other pokemon vary so if at the
start he chose, Charmander his pokemon will be:
Exeggutor, Gyrados and Charizard, Squirtle his pokemon
will be: Exeggutor, Arcanine and Blastoise and if he
chose Bulbasaur his pokemon will be: Arcanine, Gyrados
and Venusaur. Win against him, and your Pokemon's name
and level as well as time it took to beat the game until
this point will be entered into the Hall of Fame. After
that, you can continue on and keep fighting the the Elite
Four and Gary, or continue on with your quest to become a
Pokemon Master.
Secret
Dungeon
The Secret Dungeon is the cave right next to right next
to Cerulean City where you couldnt get to before.
Go up Nugget Bridge and use surf, and surf downward til
you see the cave entrance. This is a cave with lots of
great strong pokemon to capture. Here, you will find
Mewtwo. If you can find him, capture him with the Master
Ball you've saved. He's a level 70 psychic pokemon. In
this cave, you will need surf to get to Mewtwo. You will
also find some high-level Raichus and Chanseys as
well. You cannot get here until you have become a Pokemon
League Champ.
Power Plant
Another secret area you can only get to with surf is the
powerplant. Here, you will find lots of electric pokemon.
If you manage to find your way to the exit, you will see
a rare pokemon. This one is a Zapdos, and electric bird
pokemon very very good. You can capture him with any ball
except the normal pokeball. He's rare and the only one in
the whole game, so save before fighting him. To get to
the Power Plant, go to the area north east of the Rock
Tunnel. It's right above the Pokecentre. use surf and
surf along the river the river.
