Richard Chamberlain playing a Scotsman? Robert Conrad as a Frenchman? It all seems rather unlikely, but that was the scenario for this popular drama which marked the beginning of Richard's reign as 'King of the Mini-Series' - a title he has often claimed to hate.

Chamberlain's character dominates the project, despite the presence of an all-star cast. He plays an inexperienced trapper who's saved from starving to death by a tough but kindly fellow hunter (Conrad) who takes him under his wing. Unfortunately, Richard's character falls for his friend's wife - a love triangle which kept audiences enthralled, even if critics didn't approve.

The script required Richard to play a loving husband who is happy and loyal to his friends - a totally likeable person. In fact, the actor himself has cited it as one of his favourite roles, saying "He was one of the kind of people I admire most."

Among the stars, sharp-eyed viewers may also spot a young George Clooney, who as a teenager appeared with his friends as an extra when filming moved close to his home town in Kentucky.
