Or perhaps Misery at the Box Office would have been a more fitting title.

During the multi-part Dr. Kildare episode 'Tiger, Tiger', the medic fell in love with an epilepsy sufferer played by Yvette Mimieux, who won an Emmy for her role. Ratings soared thanks to the story's romantic nature - after all, it was very rare that Kildare gave his heart away. When Mimieux's character eventually died, Chamberlain's army of female fans wept along with his character.

That success was not of course ignored for long by MGM, who produced this movie in the hope of turning the chemistry between the two young stars into box office gold.

It certainly had a good pedigree, the screenplay being based on a novel by Betty E. Smith, whose A Tree Grows in Brooklyn had been made into an acclaimed film starring Dorothy McGuire in 1945. However, it was not to be. Joy in the Morning totally bombed on its release, leaving Richard still without a cinema hit.
