The 1970 version of Julius Caesar has been largely forgotten despite the decent reviews it gained on its cinema release. The most probable reason this is that it has been overshadowed by Joseph L Mankiewicz's acclaimed original adaptation (also featuring John Gielgud), made 17 years earlier.
Chamberlain was rather disappointed by the finished product, saying later, "At the showing I went to I was so bored that I left at the interval. A dreadful film."
Nevertheless, his inclusion in another all-star cast seemed to be indicative of his standing among the acting community. And this time, having already appeared with Gielgud in the TV movie of Hamlet, he wasn't quite so overawed by the big names around him.
