RC PLAYS: Harry Powell.

Who could ever forget Robert Mitchum's chilling performance as Harry Powell or Charles Laughton's amazingly atmospheric direction from the original version of this thriller?

This updated remake of the undoubted classic then was always going to be on something of a hiding to nothing thanks to the stature of the original, whose startling imagery and chilling menace it fails to recapture - perhaps there are some movies which can only work in the black and white photography of the 1950s. Having said that, for anyone not familiar with its predecessor, this version is quite passable and certainly watchable.

Chamberlain is almost unrecogniseable as the fake preacher with his slicked-back hair and 'LOVE' and 'HATE' tattooed across his knuckles - but it did at last provide the actor with an out-and-out villain to play, and he makes a decent fist of it too.
