One year after TMBG really hit it big for Elektra with Flood in 1990, Bar/None Records, the distributor of TMBG's first two albums, released this collection of B-sides from singles the Giants had released while with the label. This album, shows how truly great a band TMBG really is. While most bands just have worthless, throwaway songs as the B-sides on their singles, most of the songs on this album could easily have been included on the first two albums. In fact, some of them should have. "It's Not my Birthday," "Hey Mr DJ, I Thought you Said we Had a Deal," "Nightgown of the Sullen Moon," and "We're the Replacements" (the song that had lots of wannabe Giant fans thinking TMBG actually used to open for The Replacements) are so good, they easily could have been released as singles in their own right. Most of the others are also great songs, such as "I'll Sink Manhattan," "When it Rains it Snows," and "For Science."
Miscellaneous T also features some familiar TMBG songs. While "Hotel Detective" and "Don't Let's Start" sound pretty much the same way they did on TMBG's first album, the two songs from Lincoln that are on there are presented, well, differently. There's an alternate version of "Kiss Me, Son of God," which was the last song on Lincoln. It's a very good version, and almost as good as the one that did get released in 1988. There's also a remixed version of "The World's Address," done by Joshua Fried, put on the album. Unfortunately, it's the first completely unlistenable song TMBG released. It's really quite awful. There are a couple other clunkers on the album ("Hello Radio" and "The Biggest One" being the two), but this remix of the song that played so well on Lincoln is by far the worst song on there. That being said, you simply must own Miscellaneous T. Most of the songs are great, and even though the two Johns recorded no new material for this one, it's a worthy addition to the TMBG canon.
As always, feel free to e-mail me with any problems. Or not. It's your nickel.
