"Thats all of them." Nathan sighed heavily as he covered his head
with
his hands.
"What are we gonna do now?" Vin usually hoarse voice was even more
so
as he continued to follow every flame lapping at the structure.
"Make sure this fella goes back to where he came from." Chris stopped
letting his gaze meet each man's and then settle on the fire. "Hell!"
***********
It was dark in Four Corners as the seven made their way into the
saloon. Silently, they sat in the back. Inez brought them
a
bottle of whiskey, and seven glasses.
Ezra poured drinks, and the seven men raised their glasses.
"To them" Vin Tanner said softly, as he downed his drink.
"To them" the others murmured, and threw back their own
shots.
Ezra poured each man another drink and the seven sat in
silence for a time, each thinking about the women who
had been such a large part of their life.
Finally, the silence was broken by JD's hesitant question.
"Hey guys, uhm, well, gee, I was just wonderin'?"
"Out with it JD." Chris demanded.
"OK, well you see, I was just doin' some figurin', and well,
uhm. . . "
"Look kid, I ain't got all night," Buck interrupted. "Blossom's
waiting."
OK, guys, it's like this. I was countin', and "The Dark Quill"
gal,
uhm she. . . "
"JD, I got doctorin' to do this week." Nathan reminded him
gently.
"See fellas, it's like this," JD's dark eyes were enormous as
he thought about the tiny little detail that "The Dark Quill"
had forgotten. His voice dropped to a whisper, as he started
to tell them what the detail was.
Before JD could continue, there was a thunderous crash in the
street. All 7 jumped from their chairs, and ran to the door of
the saloon.
Lightning was flashing, and thunder roared every few seconds.
The wind was howling, and the 7 stared in awe as a woman
appeared out of a swirling vortex.
Vin immediately began shaking with fear. His blue eyes clouded
over, and Chris put a hand on his shoulder.
"Easy cowboy." the gunslinger told his best friend. "She
ain't here
for you this time."
"The Lord is watching over us Brother Tanner." Josiah's melodic
voice rang
out as he put a big hand on Vin's shoulder.
"Gentlemen, I believe it would be advisable to inquire as to the
intentions of the purveyors of injury and sympathy, who are
approaching our posistion at this very instant." Ezra's observation
was borne out, as the saloon doors crashed open.
Vin paled and fell to the floor, curling into a ball and moaning
incoherently. Chris dropped to his side, rubbing his back and
putting his head close to Vin's ear, told "THE YOUNGER MAN"
bleeck, I hate that phrase.) soflty, "It's OK cowboy, I won't
let
her hurt you." Chris' icy blue/green eyes met the Queen's.
His
stare told her in no uncertain terms, that if she had anything in
mind regarding Vin, there would be hell to pay.
Buck glared at the Queen. "I don't know what you've
got in mind, but you'd
better leave Vin outta this "PART".
The Queen held up one regal hand, and her voluminous skirts
swirled around her. "I'm not here for any of you. Where
is
"The Dark Quill?" She demanded authoritatively.
"Did you hear that Vin? She ain't here for none of us."
Chris
told his best friend in a low voice. Vin didn't speak, but Chris
could feel the shaking in the tracker's slight build diminishing.
A trembling woman dressed from head to toe in black, came
haltingly down the saloon stairs. When she got to the bottom
of the steps, she blanched and began trembling. "OH MY GOD!
OH MY GOD! IT CAN'T BE! I KILLED THEM ALL! I KNOW
I DID!" The woman immediately began searching her story.
"Diana, yep shot her in the chest."
"Penny, her I stabbed."
"Kim, well I threw her down the well."
"The Dark Quill"s searching became more frantic, as she tried
desperately to find their names in her Fic.
"Judy and Mog, I got at the same time."
"OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD!" Her breathing became more rapid,
as the awful truth began to sink in. Still, her desperate mind
cried
out, there's 2 more pages. Keep searching.
"There's poor Sappy Cassie. I got her with the wagon."
"The Dark Quill" was whimpering louder than JD now. Only
1 page
left.
"Maggie, I knew I got Maggie." She breathed in short lived relief,
as
she came to the end of the story.
"NO! NO! NO! OH DEAR GOD! NO!" "The Dark Quill"
screeched
in terror as there in black and white was the proof. She had
indeed
forgotten them:
RIVER STYX NANCY
The Fanfic authoress glared at the trembling "Dark Quill".
Queen of the Styx Nancy let the person who'd destroyed all her friends
know in just four words, the kind of trouble she was in.
"I brought my hole!"
The end for now. The Dark Quill would be advised to bring
us back to life, so I can write the sequel, and get you out of
this mess. LOL! KIM, who told ya, you forgot something!
