Ezra stepped out of the saloon and squinted in the bright afternoon sunlight.  Yawning, he stretched being careful not to spill the coffee he was holding in his right hand.  He was about to sit in his favorite chair on the boardwalk when he noticed a dejected figure silently walking across the street towards him.

Ezra leaned back in his chairs and stretched his legs out against the railing while he waited for her to make her way up the stairs towards him.  Noting the slumped set of her shoulders and her downturned gaze he asked softly, “Why, darling Shawna, whatever is wrong?”

Startled, Shawna look up to see her favorite gambler.  “Oh Ezra, it’s Kim, she says I use too many words in our fanfic,” Shawna wailed turning her dejected gaze to Ezra.  It was then she noticed the outstretched legs.  Feeling her knees begin to weaken she immediately lowered herself into the nearest chair.  The one occupied by Ezra, of course.  Nonplused, the gambler replied, “Why, my dear, it requires ingenuity and adroitness to construct appropriate sentences and it simply isn’t possible to use an excessive amount of words in one sentence in order to get your point across.”

“That’s what I told her, Ezra,” Shawna replied as she gazed into Ezra’s beautiful emerald eyes.  “But you should hear her, why she acts like I just have all these extra words lying around my computer room.  Just waiting for me to pick them up.  It’s not that easy.  Before you know it she’s taking out half of my hard work.  I have to go behind her back and add some of it back again.  She’s a terror, I tell you.”

Ezra blinked.  Just then, his gaze was distracted from his darling BrigaDear when another figure began making its way up the boardwalk.  Ezra studied the figure carefully.  Dressed in buckskins and wearing a deep blue shirt the man walked as though in EXTREME pain.  It was Vin Tanner.   His left cheek was bruised and slightly swollen.  He had one arm wrapped around his ribcage.  What looked to be bloodstains spotted his blue shirt a deep purple.

“Ugh-oh,” Shawna said, “Looks like Kim’s been hard at work again.  Sheesh, and she thinks I’m mean to you, Ezra.”  She felt Ezra stiffen beneath her >.

Vin LEANed against the post as though he didn’t have the energy to hold himself upright.  Grimacing he hugged his stomach harder as the movement pulled his sore muscles.  Shawna leaned forward as she thought she saw something underneath the open blue shirt…Is that his belly button?

Ezra notices her interest in the tracker and firmly removes her from his lap and deposits her in the chair next to him.  No sense in taking any chances, he thinks, these fanfic writers get a little carried away at times.  Finding herself alone in a chair, Shawna just gazed at Ezra sorrowfully.

“Well, Mr. Tanner, you are not looking well,” Ezra drawled as he studied The Texan.

“It’s these girls, Ezra.  They just won’t leave me alone,” Vin studied Shawna carefully.  He doesn’t think he’s seen her around here before.  However, there’s something familiar about her…if he could just breathe without pain, he’d be able to figure out where he’d seen her before.

“Why, last night I was woke up from a sound sleep by someone tripping over my feet,” Vin continued.

Shawna smiles sly at the tracker, “As I recall, that was a fitful doze.  You can blame Ezra for tripping over your feet.  He has a tendency to get clumsy when he’s getting the tar kicked out of him.”

Ezra looked at her sharply, nervously licking his lips.  He heard Vin chuckling, “Better watch your back, Ezra.  Looks like someone’s taken an interest in you.”

“Don’t worry, Ezra darling, I’ll watch your back for ya,” Shawna replied as she reached over to pat the gambler’s hand.

“That’s what I’m afraid of.”
