Biography
From NBC's Web Site: An Emmy Award winner in 1995 as Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, Julianna Margulies also won the Best Supporting Actress Award from Viewers for Quality Television and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award for her work on "ER." Margulies was born in Spring Valley, New York (just outside New York City), the youngest of three daughters. Her father is an advertising writer, and her mother is a former dancer with the American Ballet Theater. Almost before she could walk, Margulies and her family were off to Paris, where they lived for two years before relocating to England. When she was five, they returned to Spring Valley, and five years later they moved back to England. At 14, Margulies began high school in New Hampshire. She eventually obtained a B.A. in liberal arts from Sarah Lawrence College, where she appeared on campus in several plays. While looking for acting jobs in New York, Margulies waited tables for a year until winning a role in "Out for Justice" with Steven Seagal. Eventually, she supported herself by appearing in regional-theater productions, at the Yale Repertory Theater and the Asolo Theater in Florida, as well as in national TV commercials, and she guest-starred in an episode of NBC's "Law & Order." Later, writer/producer Tom Fontana wrote her into a recurring role on NBC's "Homicide: Life on the Street" as a waitress and violinist who attracted Detective Bolander (Ned Beatty). She received critical acclaim in Taylor Hackford's "Paradise Road" starring opposite Glenn Close. She also starred in "The Traveler" with Bill Paxton. Her upcoming films include "The Newton Boys" with Matthew McConaughey, which will be released this spring, and "Price Below Rubies" with Renee Zellweger, which is due out in early 1998. Margulies has earned three consecutive Emmy nominations playing "ER"'s head nurse Carol Hathaway, who almost died from an attempted suicide in the series's pilot. About Hathaway, the actress says: "Carol is someone who does not wear her emotions on her sleeve. She's competent and a go-getter who loves her job. But there's a lot more going on than she can let know." Margulies enjoys inline skating, running, reading and attending three or four movies a week. She lives in Los Angeles. Her birthday is
