Fall Preview 1998

Felicity

9-10 p.m., WB

(premieres September 29)

Stars: Keri Russell, Scott Foley, Scott Speedman, Tangi Miller, Amy Jo Johnson

Premise: My So-Called College Life. On a romantic (and, as it turns out, misguided) impulse, high school grad Felicity Porter (Russell) defies her parents and enrolls in a New York college 3,000 miles from home. A doctor's daughter with an artist's soul, she forges new friendships while feeling her way toward a stimulating, uncertain future.

They Say: "Felicity is about risks, taking chances and finding your voice," says executive producer and screenwriter J.J. Abrams ("Armageddon"), who acknowledges he has heard the show dubbed Ally McBeal Goes to College. "The truth is, it's so not that," insists Abrams. "It's Felicity goes to college . . . It's about a character you admire, who is brave in the face of adversity, dealing with the challenges that life presents her."

We Say: If any new fall series has widespread critical buzz, this is the one, and it's not hard to see why. Felicity is immensely appealing, emotionally engaging and altogether entertaining as it recaptures the adrenaline and awe of the college experience. Russell is certain to join the WB's gallery of fresh-faced instant stars, and her love triangle (between high school crush Speedman and lovably self-deprecating dorm advisor Foley) is one of the best since Beverly Hills, 90210's Dylan had to choose between Brenda and Kelly.
