Character
Captain Nathan Hale Bridger
Scheider admits that adjusting from the slower pace of acting in features to the faster pace of filming a TV series was a challenge. Nevertheless, he says the role of Captain Bridger was worth the additional preparation.
Scheider describes Bridger as an excellent leader: "Bridger knows how to motivate others and doesn't have to motivate himself," he explains. "His preoccupation is ocean research, and his occupation is command of the seaQuest, which is his laboratory."
Biography: Roy Scheider
Roy Scheider was born on Nov. 10, 1932, in Orange, N.J.. He is of German-Irish descent. He went to college at Franklin & Marshall College, Lancaster PA, USA.
Scheider is a dynamic, sinewy leading man and character actor of the American stage and screen. Trained in college dramatics, he made his professional stage debut in 1961, playing Mercutio in the New York Shakespeare Festival production of `Romeo and Juliet.' He continued receiving favorable stage reviews while performing at the McCarter Theater in Princeton, NJ; the Boston Fine Arts Festival; and the Arena Stage in Washington, DC.
He won an Obie Award in 1968 for his Off-Broadway performance in James Joyce's "Stephen D." Scheider spent several years in repertory, playing mainly classic roles, and in the mid-60s made his first film appearance. By the mid-70s he had developed into a versatile and intriguing leading man and character player in both American and French films. Scheider's first major feature-film role was in "Klute" in 1971. His career received added impetus in 1975 from a star billing in the box-office blockbuster Jaws.
He gave an engrossing portrayal of director-choreographer Bob Fosse in the latter's autobiographical film All That Jazz (1979). Scheider was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Actor for that performance and as Best Supporting Actor for his role in The French Connection (1971). Later, in 1980, he received the Drama League Critic's Award for Performance of the Year for his work in "Betrayal." His usually tough screen characterizations have benefited from a broken nose, a la Belmondo, that he sustained in Golden Gloves boxing preliminaries during his high school days. His other features include "The Seven Ups," "Marathon Man, "Sorcerer," "Jaws II," "Blue Thunder," "2010," "The Men's Club," "52-Pick-Up" and more recently "Night Games," "The Russia House," David Cronenberg's "Naked Lunch" and "Romeo is Bleeding."
In addition, Scheider starred in the HBO movie "Somebody Has to Shoot the Picture" and hosted the TV specials "Portrait of the Soviet Union" and, with "seaQuest" costar Jonathan Brandis, NBC's "Masters of Illusion: The Wizards of Special Effects."
He is married to Brend King, a documentary filmmaker. They have a 4-year-old son, Christian. Scheider enjoys reading and attending the theater.
