Shezilla: The Cloning Project

This was my very first Godzilla story...and EVERYONE likes it so far. Hey, Godzilla gets a GIRLFRIEND!!!(it's about damn time too! Poor guy's so lonely!)

Authors note: First of all, Godzilla is not my creation. He is Tomoyuki Tanaka's creation; therefore, I am not making any money off of this story. I used the name Kenpachiro Satsuma to honor the man who played Godzilla in the Heisei series. Shezilla is my own creation, and any authors who wish to use her in future stories may do so. Just give me credit for creating her, OK? This is my first Godzilla fanfiction, so please be nice. If it makes you feel like crying, I did my job. Email me at cgh18@yahoo.com. Now, on with the story.

Shezilla: The Cloning Project
By Cyndi Hovinga

Kaijuologist Dr. Kenpachiro Satsuma peered intently into his microscope. Using special tools, he sliced a thin layer off of a chunk of leathery charcoal-gray flesh.
Very carefully, he placed the tissue sample under the microscope and switched to a higher magnification. There, he viewed the chromosomes, and was finally able to determine the actual sex of the creature called Godzilla. Bringing the chromosomes into focus, Kenpachiro found an X chromosome. Next to it was a Y chromosome. At last, the world would know…
Kenpachiro turned on the television screen beside the microscope so his colleagues could see.
"We can clearly see that Godzilla is male. There has been a controversy over the kaiju's sex, and I now have the answer." Said the Kaijuologist. "Any living thing's sex can be determined by its chromosomes."
"So what's the big deal? It's a boy! D'ya need a blue banner and balloons?" Cracked Blake Dunham, a Canadian, with shoulder-length blonde hair and brown eyes.
Emiko Kurosawa, another Kaijuologist, jabbed him in the ribs with her elbow. "Not a good time to goof around. This is serious!"
Blake shrugged and smiled, "Nobody appreciates humor these days. I always thought ol' 'Godzy' was a guy."
Emiko ignored Blake's remark and turned her attention to Kenpachiro. "What will we do now?"
Kenpachiro stood there for a moment, clicking his pen. "I plan on cloning Godzilla, only I'll create a female clone. I am curious to see what would happen."
"Whoa! Wait a minute! Isn't this gonna end up like Biollante or SpaceGodzilla?" Blake asked.
"No, because those monsters were created as a result of further mutation or DNA splicing. In this project, I'm going to pair a set of X-chromosomes with another set of X-chromosomes. If anything, we could study the fetal growth of Godzilla. I shall call her Shezilla."
"That will be interesting." Blake told his colleagues as they prepared to compare notes.

Godzilla stirred beneath the ocean. The loneliness had been eating away at him for so long now, and not even hibernating could ease that feeling.
Anguirus and the others were good company, but Godzilla craved a different kind of company; he wanted another of his own kind.

It was nearly three o' clock in the morning. Kenpachiro had not left the lab that night. Instead, he decided to start the Shezilla project a little sooner.
Peering into the microscope, Kenpachiro injected a chemical that would dissolve all of the Y-chromosomes, but leave the X-chromosomes intact. Using a tiny needle, he suctioned out the inner material of a human ovum, leaving the cell wall, and injected half of the X-chromosomes.
Wiping his forehead with his sleeve, Kenpachiro worked meticulously with the joysticks that operated the microscopic needle. He suctioned the other half of the X-chromosomes and injected them into the ovum, along with the rest of the chromosomes. Then he relaxed and watched the TV screen.
For a long moment, the mass at the center of the borrowed ovum did nothing. Kenpachiro activated a device that sent a split second X-ray pulse through the cell. Suddenly, the cell became two. Those two became four.
The beginning of a new life form was at hand.
Kenpachiro wrote what happened in his notes and turned in for the night.

It was about noon on a warm autumn day in the bay area of Osaka. A young woman stood on the beach, the wind gently blowing her black hair around her face. Her eyes were closed and she frowned slightly.
Miki Saegusa, a gifted psychic, sensed Godzilla's loneliness. She could see the creature as he stirred like a restless sleeper within his thoughts. Attacking the land was not among them…

Emiko arrived at the lab at about twelve-thirty, discovered Kenpachiro's notes and turned on the TV screen. A rapidly multiplying blastocyst greeted her vision.
Three layers of cells that would later become the brain, spine, heart and lungs were presenting themselves before the amazed kaijuologist's eyes.
By the time Blake arrived, there was a disc and groove present that would later be a brain and spinal cord. Other cells were dividing that would later become other vital organs.

Kenpachiro jumped when his phone rang.
"Hello?" He mumbled into the receiver.
"Doctor! It's working! You need to come down here!" Emiko's excited voice came from the phone.
"On my way." Kenpachiro mumbled and hung up.
He got dressed and put some order into his disheveled hair. When he arrived at the lab, the cells were multiplying rapidly. A primitive heart began to beat.

Two weeks later, a definite embryo was present. There was an identifiable head, torso and tail. Three ridges were forming on the back that would later become dorsal plates, and there were tiny stubs that would soon become arms and legs. The heart could be seen beating beneath the embryo's transparent flesh.

Four months after the Shezilla project began, the embryo was still alive and showing sign of life. Kenpachiro had the developing creature placed in a special tank with the proper nourishment constantly flowing. Now, it was in identifiable creature. It had prominent eyes, ears, a mouth and stubs that would later be hands and feet.
Emiko and Kenpachiro agreed to accelerate the growth of Shezilla, keeping her in a comatose state until she was full-grown.
"Ain't she a beauty?" Blake commented as he observed the developing embryo in the tank.
"Hai." Emiko answered, taking readings and adding to her notes.

Miki awoke with a start in the middle of the night. The image of a developing Godzilla embryo had been haunting her for several nights now.
Something was going to happen. It would be very soon.

Godzilla awoke fully, and began to move. In moments, the King of the Monsters had reached the surface of the ocean.
A nuclear-dumping vessel sat like a toy in a child's bathtub. Godzilla sensed energy and released his atomic flame upon the boat, giving the night sky an eerie blue glow. The boat sank before any calls could be made.
Roaring victoriously, Godzilla followed the ship down and had a midnight nuclear snack.

"Shezilla's almost full-grown. She's three hundred and twenty feet tall, fifty-eight thousand tons. We can release her any time." Kenpachiro told Emiko and Blake.
It had been nearly ten months since the project began.

The bright sun rose over Japan. Rising out of the water with it was Godzilla, who was heading for land at high speed.
Tokyo awoke to the sound of his roar and the quakes of his footsteps. No one was prepared.
Shezilla began to move uneasily in the tank. Tubing and wiring broke free of her as she struggled to "hatch". Moments later, an opening above the underground tank opened wider and Shezilla burst free.
Standing there as if she had always existed, Shezilla took her first breath and roared. Torrents of the fluid she was in ran off of her flesh in rivulets.
Her features were clearly female compared to Godzilla's; her dorsal spines weren't as big, they were rounder and puffier than his were.
"She's perfect!" Kenpachiro exclaimed. "She's…beautiful!"
"Good goin' boss!" Blake commented eyes wide.

Godzilla caught a strange, yet familiar scent in the air. Looking into the distance, he saw a shape similar to his own. Was he dreaming?
Shezilla caught Godzilla's scent as he approached, and roared. Godzilla's roar answered hers. The two monsters maintained eye-contact throughout this encounter.
The kaijuologists watched the monsters approach each other.
Godzilla and Shezilla eyed each other warily, circling and sniffing. Their roaring had quieted to occasional growls, and the distance between them was getting smaller and smaller. Soon, they were standing nose to nose, sniffing each other.

"It looks good," Kenpachiro told his colleagues, "we should close the radiation shield at least. We can still watch. Their interaction is fascinating!"

Godzilla had walked away from Shezilla and moved towards the nuclear power plant.
The Kaijuologists observed closely as the King of the Monsters destroyed the power plant and extracted the nuclear reactor.
Instead of absorbing the radiation, however, he took the reactor and placed it at Shezilla's feet.
Shezilla picked up the reactor and proceeded to consume the radiation. One by one, her dorsal plates shimmered until they all emitted an electric blue glow.

"Monster love! How cute!" Blake commented, running his hand through his hair. He jumped when Emiko smacked him in the back of the head. "OW!"
"Grow up! We can laugh later."
Blake made a face and returned his attention to the monsters.

Godzilla couldn't ever recall feeling this happy. Finally, after so long, another of his own kind had appeared. There was also another feeling present, more like an urge.

"Are you getting this on film?" Emiko asked Blake.
"Never stopped." Blake replied.
Kenpachiro's heart was pounding in excitement. So far, the monsters were getting along.

Again, Godzilla began to circle around Shezilla. Shezilla watched him carefully, the drained reactor dropping to the ground with a crash.
Godzilla stopped right in front of Shezilla. He turned and faced her, then bent over momentarily. His tail rose high up into the air and slapped down to the ground, destroying an expensive car dealership lot. Blue light danced down one dorsal plate at a time, like the chasing blinking action of Christmas tree lights.
Shezilla, seemingly approving of Godzilla's display, walked over to him and nipped the side of his neck. Godzilla roared and nipped her back. They stood still for a moment, sniffing each other once again.

"What're you waitin' for? Go for it!" Blake hollered, as if the monsters could hear him.
Kenpachiro and Emiko just ignored their excited colleague.

Shezilla bobbed her head and moved her tail over to one side as an invitation to Godzilla. Godzilla took the invitation; moving behind her, he pinned her arms to her sides with his arms, lightly bit down on the ridges of the back of her neck and used his own tail to hold hers still. His torso jerked a couple of times and she roared.
They looked like a strange four-legged animal, for one couldn't tell where one ended and the other began.

Kenpachiro smiled as the monsters mated. The experiment was a success!

Shezilla stumbled forward with Godzilla still clinging to her. Godzilla moved with her. The motion sent them crashing over what remained of the nuclear power plant. Shezilla roared, and Godzilla released his grip on her neck to roar in reply.
Shezilla roared again, not in pain or anger, but pleasure.
They continued to growl and wriggle about. About ten to fifteen minutes after the mating actually began, Godzilla released his grip on Shezilla.
Shezilla roared and wriggled away, her tail thrashing about. Godzilla waited for her to calm down before approaching her again. The monsters actually held hands and nuzzled noses in an almost human display of affection before heading out to sea together.

Hours after witnessing the mating behavior of the monsters, Kenpachiro got together all of the Kaijuologists he could get ahold of.

"I would first like to thank you all for coming on such short notice," Kenpachiro began.
The lights went out and images of the chromosomes appeared on the large TV monitor in the front of the room. Quiet chatter erupted around the room and notes were being taken.
"As you can see, Godzilla has both X and Y-chromosomes, thus proving that the creature is indeed male." He pushed play, and the X-chromosomes being injected into an empty ovum appeared on the screen. "I created a clone of Godzilla using only X-chromosomes. The result is a female Godzilla. We here at the lab call her Shezilla." Pictures from different stages of Shezilla's embryonic development flashed in sequence on the screen.
Fascinated oohs and ahs went up.
"Today, Shezilla was born, in a sense. We kept her unconscious until full adulthood was achieved. It happened so quickly because I accelerated her growth process." Kenpachiro continued. "And for the first time in history, we have the entire mating process of two monsters of film."
Blake hurriedly stuck the recently shot tape into the VCR and pushed PLAY. The image of Godzilla and Shezilla circling each other filled the screen. The image froze.
"Basically, the first thing they did was sniff at each other from a distance." Kenpachiro clicked the remote and the image went into motion. He paused it again when Godzilla placed the nuclear reactor at Shezilla's feet. "Here, we can clearly see him presenting her with a gift, so to speak. My guess is that Shezilla could've rejected the offering and ended the process right there, but she did not." The images began to play until Godzilla began to circle Shezilla once again. "At this point, the male observed the female as she consumed his offering. Then Godzilla began a display process using his dorsal plates. Shezilla lost interest in the offering and approved of Godzilla's display."
The Kaijuologists watched in fascination when the neck-nipping took place.
The picture froze again when Shezilla moved her tail aside and invited Godzilla to mate with her.
"Shezilla clearly approved of Godzilla and her readiness to mate is…well…quite obvious.. The rest of the tape is self-explanatory." Kenpachiro finished and let the audience watch the rest of the mating process.

Meanwhile, Miki worked swiftly on a drawing of two creatures nestled around each other beneath the sea. Her teacher, a psychic named Asuka Okouchi, looked over Miki's shoulder.
"Is that the dream you had last night?" Asuka asked.
Miki looked up and nodded, "Someone created a female clone of Godzilla, and now the clone and Godzilla are mates."

Godzilla never felt so happy in his life. Now he had a mate who thought and behaved just like he did. They wrestled playfully, causing quite a disturbance in the calm water. They stopped and licked each other for a moment, then nuzzled noses.
Shezilla darted away towards the shores of Tokyo. Godzilla followed close behind.
Thirty minutes later, they were stepping onto land. The citizens fled in panic and the military began to attack. Shezilla roared and bellowed as bullets struck her and Godzilla. Godzilla answered her call.
Simultaneously, the kaijus destroyed most of the tanks with their radioactive breath. The ammunition in the tanks went off, causing more explosions.
Jet fighters swooped in, pelting the monsters with more rockets and bullets.
Godzilla's tail swiped one of the jets to its doom and a constant stream of radioactive fire poured from his maw. Jets crashed into buildings or the ground and exploded.
More jets swooped in, but were also destroyed.
When Godzilla and Shezilla realized there were no more weapons being launched at them, they both roared triumphantly.

Miki had another hunch, and asked Asuka to drive her to the laboratory in Osaka. When they arrived, Miki hurried to the exact room where Kenpachiro, Emiko and Blake were working.
They whirled around in surprise.
After a brief explanation from both sides, they became friends.

Godzilla and Shezilla found the nuclear power plant and consumed the radiation from the reactor. Stunned civilians watched the monsters nuzzle noses, sniff each other and growl.

Miki closed her eyes and frowned slightly.
"What's wrong, Miki?" Emiko asked.
Opening her eyes, Miki said, "Shezilla is experiencing strange sensations…I can't tell…"
"Are they mating again?" Kenpachiro asked.
Miki shook her head, "They are too far away to read anymore than what I am telling you." She took a deep breath and sighed. "Going into their minds and emotions is strange."

"Doctor, you should take a look at this." Emiko called from across the room.
Kenpachiro walked over and looked over Emiko's shoulder. Shezilla's life-signs were slowly deteriorating. Blake came over as well, followed by Miki.
"What's happening to Shezilla?" Blake asked.
"When we accelerated her growth process, we also accelerated her aging process." Kenpachiro answered with a sinking feeling.
"So…what does that mean?" Blake asked.
"Shezilla will die within the next twenty-four to forty-eight hours." Kenpachiro replied with a sigh. "She'll just lay down and stop…just like an old lady who goes to sleep and never wakes up."

Godzilla and Shezilla did eventually start mating again, and their thrashing about wrecked many of Tokyo's finest skyscrapers. Many people fled, but some watched this ritual with bafflement and fascination. Calls started coming in.

"They're at it again!" Blake called from the radio room. "I just heard a report about two Godzillas performing a strange act. If only they had the concept of emotions. I'll bet when Shezilla dies, Godzilla will just walk off into the ocean without looking back."
"How can you say that, Blake?!" Miki cried, "When the military attacks, Godzilla always retaliates because he's angry. The monsters don't understand why they're being attacked! Their anger is so strong I can feel it now!"
"I want to go to them." Kenpachiro suddenly said, interrupting the shouting match.

Godzilla and Shezilla ignored the approaching helicopter. They were too busy searching for more radiation and nipping at each other to notice it. The two kaijus realized there was no more nuclear energy around the area.
The two monsters started making a beeline for Sapporo.

"They mate for life." Kenpachiro observed, his voice partially obscured by the engine of the helicopter.
"What?" Emiko called, leaning closer to hear.
"I said they mate for life." He repeated as he watched the monsters interact. "They look…happy."
Blake snorted, not believing the doctor's words.

The two monsters were clearly showing affection for each other, by going out of their way to nuzzle noses or make some kind of physical contact. For a moment, they walked with their tails entwined.
It saddened Kenpachiro to know that soon, very soon, Shezilla would die, leaving Godzilla all alone again. He wished there was some way to stop or even reverse the aging process which had been accelerated to speed her growth and development.

The cities in the path of Godzilla and Shezilla were evacuated. Kenpachiro hoped he had predicted the monsters' moves correctly, or many lives would be lost.

Godzilla looked over at Shezilla with growing unease and concern. She seemed to be weakening before his eyes, and it also seemed as if she was slowing down a bit. Each hour, Shezilla seemed to grow thinner and weaker.
The urge to protect Shezilla burned strongly in Godzilla's atomic heart. He would go to any length to keep her strong, unaware that she was dying. Even Shezilla didn't know her death was soon.
They arrived in Sapporo and began a desperate search for nuclear materials. Shezilla demolished an apartment complex and roared in frustration. Godzilla answered with a roar of his own. He found the power plant and removed the reactor, demolishing the place in the process.
Godzilla carried the nuclear device to his mate, placing it at her feet. Shezilla took the reactor and consumed the radiation.

In the helicopter, Miki closed her eyes and concentrated. Her lips tightened as she shut out all the other psychic "voices" and zeroed in on Godzilla's and Shezilla's thoughts. She felt Godzilla's confusion at Shezilla's condition.
"Shezilla's weakening. Godzilla doesn't know why, so he keeps finding nuclear energy for her." Miki finally said. "He thinks she just needs more and more."
"Godzilla has the right idea, but it's not the metabolism. Every hour is like another five to ten years for Shezilla." Emiko inquired.
"I think she's sinking faster than I predicted." Kenpachiro noted, watching Shezilla's life-signs, which were fading.
"Miki, is she in pain?" Blake suddenly asked, finally showing concern.
Miki shifted from Godzilla's thoughts and feelings to Shezilla's. "She's in no pain."

"Hey, I need to refuel. Can I go back to base?" The helicopter pilot interrupted them all.
"Of course." Kenpachiro replied, "we must continue to monitor Godzilla and Shezilla." He watched his laptop computer, observing the twin blips as they moved over land.
The helicopter sped away to refuel, leaving Godzilla and Shezilla to each other once again.

Shezilla was feeling so strange, but couldn't understand why. No matter how much radiation she consumed, she continued to weaken. Godzilla lumbered over and nuzzled his mate, trying to comfort her. Somehow, he could sense how she felt, and wanted dearly to help her.

"How's Shezilla?" Emiko asked her colleague.
Kenpachiro shook his head, "Not so hot. It could be any time now." A sudden lump formed in his throat. "If I had known this would happen I'd have never proceeded! I thought I could create…play God. Whatever you want to call it. But I was WRONG! Now Godzilla and Shezilla will suffer because of me!"
Emiko put her hand on his shoulder consolingly, "Don't say that. You had no idea this would happen. Cloning is never a perfect science."
Kenpachiro sighed, "But Godzilla will be all alone again."
"But you gave him some friendship. Another of his kind," Miki joined the conversation. "At least he had some time with another of his kind."
"But still, I feel as if I'm dangling something under his nose and then taking it away again." Kenpachiro sighed again. "They're going back to the water."
"Where are they heading?" Asked Emiko, craning her neck to see the computer screen.
"Just out to sea. Probably to sleep…which is something all of us need." Kenpachiro told everyone. "We can meet back in the lab in six hours or if the monsters appear."
They all agreed and went home when the helicopter landed.

Godzilla and Shezilla swam peacefully side-by-side. Many people called in and reported the sightings one after another.
The monsters made no moves toward any of the boats in the water; they were too busy paying attention to each other. Despite being ponderous on land, they were very agile and graceful in the water.
There was a playfulness about them that people couldn't help but watch.
Shezilla lifted her head above the water and roared. Godzilla rose above the waves and answered with a roar of his own. The two monsters actually leapt out of the water like whales or dolphins. The massive splashes caused by them nearly capsized all of the boats in the area. The two monsters nipped at each other for a minute, then Godzilla started picking the seaweed and other sea life from between Shezilla's dorsal plates. They switched places and Shezilla started picking at Godzilla's dorsal plates.
The two monsters nuzzled noses and allowed the current to carry them around. They almost looked like two humans who were in love with each other. In a way, they were.
Shezilla nipped her mate's neck playfully and splashed him with her tail. Godzilla grunted at this surprise "attack" and lightly slapped her with his tail.
After another bout of playful wrestling, the two creatures vanished beneath the sea.
Shezilla darted off towards land, and Godzilla followed.

Kenpachiro jumped when his phone rang.
"Hello?" He mumbled into the phone
"It's Miki. I just had a dream…Godzilla and Shezilla are heading for Tokyo again!" Came the excited voice of Miki from the other end.
"On my way." Kenpachiro hung up.
This time, he'd slept in his clothes. However, he still looked like a wreck: his hair was a mess and his clothes needed to be washed and ironed.
Blake and Emiko received similar calls. They all met in the lab at the same time the monsters landed in Tokyo, which had been evacuated due to a timely warning from Miki.
Miki, Emiko, Blake and Kenpachiro all piled into one car and they headed for Tokyo.
By the time they arrived, great destruction was already at hand. Godzilla and Shezilla tore ferociously at the buildings surrounding them as they searched for sustenance.
Shezilla looked so…old. Her flesh looked as if it were wrinkled and seemed to hang loosely on her aging frame. Her ribs stood out on her ravaged flanks and her eyes looked as if they had sunk into their sockets.

Kenpachiro picked up his cell-phone and called the military. He told the military to leave the monsters alone. It would be a costly venture, but he wanted Shezilla to die with as little distress as possible.
"How's Shezilla?" Emiko finally broke the silence.
"It's almost over. Any minute now." Kenpachiro swallowed hard and fought tears. His creation was dying, and he couldn't save her.
He watched helplessly as Shezilla's life signs dropped to a dangerously low level.

Godzilla and Shezilla started heading back to the ocean. Shezilla was lagging further and further behind, then finally stopped and stayed in place. Godzilla kept going until he realized Shezilla wasn't following; he turned and approached his mate. With a grunt, he nudged his mate gently from behind, but she wouldn't move. Her once-bright eyes were fading, dimming, like a dying candle-flame. She looked painfully thin, old and tired.
Darkness was descending on Shezilla. Instinct told her to fight it, to push it away, but it was sapping her strength. She wanted to return to the sea with her mate, but couldn't move. Her joints ached and her vision was not clear.
With a little urging from Godzilla, Shezilla took a few more steps before her strength gave out. With a thud that made the ground shake violently, Shezilla collapsed. Many of her now-brittle bones broke, and she cried out in pain.
Godzilla roared in bewilderment and Shezilla roared back. Bending over his fallen mate, Godzilla tried to urge Shezilla back to her feet.
For several heart-wrenching minutes, Shezilla struggled to rise, but couldn't. She finally sank back to the ground, exhausted and weak. Her breathing was raspy and shallow.

Miki frowned as she picked up on Shezilla's feelings. The kaiju was confused and afraid.

Godzilla tried as hard as he could to get Shezilla back onto her feet, but Shezilla was just too weak to support her own weight. Godzilla gently gripped Shezilla's arm and tugged, but she just couldn't get up. Instead, she cried out in pain. He bent over and sniffed as if to figure out by smell what was ailing his mate.
Shezilla felt her strength ebbing, and the darkness continued to consume her; it had begun to blanket her vision. Soon, it was dimmer than a night without a moon. She still had enough sight to see her mate desperately trying to help her to her feet.
Godzilla knew something was happening to Shezilla, but he didn't want to believe it. His mate could not die! Not now! Each time the thought crossed his mind, he struggled harder to save her.

Kenpachiro jumped out of the car and ran up the hill so he could see the monsters better. For a moment, he made eye contact with Shezilla. Her eyes were very dim looking, almost not seeing.
"I'm sorry, Shezilla. I'm so sorry. Godzilla, I'm sorry…" Kenpachiro fell to his knees, sobbing.
Emiko brought a handkerchief to him and put her arm around his shoulders. She carefully led him back to the car.

Miki could see what Shezilla saw; everything was getting so dark. She could also sense Godzilla's growing unease.

Godzilla nipped Shezilla's neck lightly, then sniffed again. Shezilla slowly lifted her head and nuzzled noses with Godzilla, then put her head down again. Instinctively, the monster knew she was dying.
Godzilla finally laid down beside his mate, his head rested against the side of her neck. He could sense her weakening, he could sense death fast approaching her, but the monster didn't know what else to do. So he just lay there, comforting his mate in her last moments.
The darkness consumed her completely, and she was no longer afraid. She felt her pain start to fade away. There was no ground or sky, no up or down. Just the calm sensation of drifting. Accepting the darkness that washed over and around her, Shezilla slowly closed her eyes and allowed it to carry her away.
Farther and farther, she went. No pain, no anger. Just peace. Peace was all Shezilla felt as she was swept up towards the stars.

Before the monitors and machines alerted the Kaijuologists, Miki gasped and clapped a hand to her forehead. She could sense Shezilla's spirit as it left this Earth forever. It was a pure soul, something a human being never knew a monster could have.
"Shezilla…it's over." She whispered softly, then turned her attention back to Godzilla. Tears rolled down her cheeks, and she sniffed.
"Goodbye, Shezilla," Kenpachiro whispered as Shezilla's lifesigns all flatlined.

Godzilla nuzzled Shezilla's neck lightly, trying to rouse her, but she was gone. Getting to his feet and turning his face to the stars, he roared mournfully. Then, as the human onlookers watched, Godzilla closed his eyes, bent down and touched his mouth to Shezilla's head as if to bid her farewell

Then, the monster nuzzled noses with her again, holding her head in his hands. He stayed that way for several minutes, holding her head in his hands with a gentleness no human knew he had.
The kaiju felt the strangest sensation; to him, it felt like his heart had just broken in two. The sensation rose from his heart to his throat.
He did not know why his mate had died. For some reason though, Godzilla didn't feel angry. It was another emotion, one he'd never felt before. The emotion swept over him, making his heart heavy and something strange happen to his eyes.

As Miki and the Kaijuologists watched, Godzilla gently laid Shezilla's head back onto the ground, straightened and opened his eyes. They saw something in them that they never thought the King of the Monsters was ever capable of, but it was the most human thing they'd ever seen.
Tears.

Mournfully, Godzilla sent a swift blast of radioactive flames onto Shezilla's body, setting it on fire. Tears continued to roll down his cheeks as he watched the flames slowly cremate her body. Because she was dead, her cells didn't regenerate the burning flesh.
When the flames died down, a pile of ashes and a skull remained. Godzilla stared at the skull for a moment, blinked, then roared again. Turning his back to the ashes, he used his tail to scatter them into the air. Then he reached down and picked up the skull.
With a last mournful roar, the monster lumbered towards the sea, carrying Shezilla's skull with him.

Emiko wiped tears from her eyes, Blake was blowing his nose and Kenpachiro was still sobbing a little. Everyone felt Shezilla's passing deep down inside.
"Is Godzilla OK?" Kenpachiro asked Miki.
Miki nodded, "That was the first time he ever cried. I can still feel his grief."
"We all do, Miki." Blake told her. "We all do."

Alone again, Godzilla slipped beneath the calm waters of the ocean, his tears mingling with the salty water. He would miss Shezilla for the rest of his life. She was his companion, friend and mate. Now, she was just a memory, the best memory Godzilla would ever have. The skull he carried was all that was left of her.
But for a few precious days, he had the company he desired. For that much, he was grateful.

Poor Godzilla...I'm probably the only writer who ever portrays Godzilla crying.
