Jake and Vicky Story Part 1

Scene 1
Characters: Jake and Vicky
Setting: Their bedroom/afterglow

(VICKY is laying on her side. JAKE is behind her, holding her waist close to him).

JAKE: What are you thinking?

VICKY: About Marley. Jake, I just can't figure her out.

JAKE: Maybe it's time you stopped trying.

VICKY: She's my sister. You know, I thought after she got out of Willowdale, things would start to change between us - that we could maybe someday be close again.

JAKE: Do you really think that's possible?

VICKY: I was hoping. I haven't even talked to her since her release.

JAKE: Maybe that's the problem. You still have unresolved issues.

VICKY: When she gets back, I'm going to talk to her. We need to have this out once and for all. (JAKE kisses her).

JAKE: Just be careful.

VICKY: Always. (Pause). Oh, I forgot to tell you.

JAKE: What?

VICKY: My mom is working at KBAY again.

JAKE: That's great.

VICKY: Yeah. She wants me to work with her.

JAKE: Doing what?

VICKY: P.R.

JAKE: I think that's wonderful. And you know, if you wanted to get into journalism, you could always come to work with me.

VICKY: I don't think so. I'm not too into the journalism aspect of it - just the idea of getting out of the house, doing what I like doing, and of course helping my mother, all sound good. (SHE turns around and kisses HIM on the lips. JAKE strokes her hair).

Scene 2
Characters: Vicky, Donna, and Patrick
Setting: KBAY/Vicky's office

(DONNA shows VICKY to her office).

DONNA: You can work here.

VICKY: This is great, mom. Thanks.

DONNA: Well, thank you for agreeing to this. I just couldn't think of a better person to work the station's P.R. than you. (VICKY smiles. PATRICK runs in).

PATRICK: Donna, I'm glad I found you.

DONNA: Hi, have you met my daughter? Victoria, this is Patrick Henderson. (VICKY and PATRICK shake hands). Victoria's going to be head of public relations for the station.

PATRICK (to Vicky): Well, then I'm glad you're here.

DONNA: Why, what's going on?

PATRICK: Dan Olson. He's gone.

DONNA: What do you mean gone?

VICKY: Who's Dan Olson?

DONNA: He's the most important benefactor for KBAY. He's responsible for 75% of our ad revenues. Without him, I don't know how the station would even be on the air.

PATRICK: Well, we better find an alternate way for funding then. Olson just pulled out.

DONNA: Pulled out? He can't pull out.

PATRICK: Yes he can, if he's been arrested.

DONNA: Arrested? What on earth for?

PATRICK: He just gave a press conference. The drug ring the Illinois State Police have been working on -

DONNA: Oh my god. He's not involved.

PATRICK: He's the ring leader. And it gets worse.

DONNA: How much worse can it get?

PATRICK: You know all the funding and support he's been giving us?

DONNA: Oh no.

PATRICK: Oh yes.

VICKY: Wait a minute - are you saying the station's been staying afloat all this time with illegal funds?

PATRICK: Our license is up for renewal in two weeks. We'll never get it now. The press is jumping on this. We're in a lot of trouble here.

DONNA (to Vicky): Welcome to KBAY, darling.

Scene 3
Characters: Jake and Chris
Setting: The Herald

JAKE: Chris, this is huge. I'm going to take it!

CHRIS: Jake, everyone's tight-lipped about it.

JAKE: Then I'll go straight to KBAY.

CHRIS: They won't tell you anything, man.

JAKE: Chris, trust me. I have a source there now.

CHRIS: A source?

JAKE: That's right. A cute little blonde, who wouldn't refuse me. (JAKE leaves).

Scene 4
Characters: Jake and Vicky, Donna
Setting: Vicky's office at KBAY

(JAKE knocks on VICKY'S door).

VICKY: Hi, what are you doing here?

JAKE: Just came by to see how you were. How's your first day going?

VICKY: Awful. I'm sure you've heard about the big scandal.

JAKE: Yeah, I did. So, you have a scoop for me?

VICKY (laughing): Very funny. (SHE kisses HIM. DONNA walks in).

DONNA: Victoria, did you fax that letter to Olson's employee?

VICKY: No, I'll do it right now.

DONNA: Hello, Jake.

JAKE: Donna. (DONNA leaves).

VICKY: I'll be right back. (VICKY walks out. JAKE looks in her desk for files. VICKY comes back and catches JAKE going through her desk).

VICKY: Busted! (SHE walks in).

JAKE: It's not what it looks like. (VICKY smiles).

VICKY: Oh really?

JAKE: I just wanted --

VICKY: You wanted to get the press release so you could be the first paper to break the story?

JAKE: Come on, Vick.

VICKY: Nope, sorry. You'll just have to wait like the rest of the press.

JAKE: I'm not the rest of the press, Vick!

VICKY: When it comes to this, you are. Now, Jake, if you want me to do my job here, then you're going to have to respect the fact that I can't leak things to you. Can you do that?

JAKE: I can do it, but I don't like it.

VICKY: You don't have to like it. (VICKY kisses HIM).

Scene 5
Characters: Jake and Vicky
Setting: Their bedroom

(JAKE and VICKY are in bed. VICKY'S eyes are closed. JAKE picks up phone and dials numbers VICKY opens her eyes, but is turned to her side).

JAKE: Chris?... No, she won't give me anything... What am I supposed to do?... I don't know, I'm trying!... I think we're just going to have to wait for the police report and the press release... I'm telling you, Vicky is not going to give in on this one... I'll do whatever I can... Don't forget you have to be at Senator Howard's press conference today... What you talking about? You have to go! That's a huge story!... Chris, I need you there! If this guy resigns because an intern claims rape, that's front page! It's going to knock Monica Lewinsky out of the water!... Her name is Veronica Allen. No, I already talked to her. She promised us an exclusive next week. And just between us, she promised details of Howard's indecent parts, if you know what I mean. She said that's the only way people will believe her, but she doesn't want to go on the record until next week... Yeah, I know. I'll cover for you... no, I'm sure. I'll go to the conference, you write the story... Ok, bye.

(HE hangs up, looks over at VICKY who pretends to be asleep, and goes to take a shower. VICKY gets out of bed and walks over to door. SHE looks out and sees that JAKE isn't in sight. SHE closes door, picks up phone, and dials numbers).

VICKY: Mom? Hi. I know you're on your way to the production meeting. Do you have anyone assigned to cover Senator Howard's press conference?... That's great, don't assign anyone. I think I'm the perfect person for this story.

Scene 6
Characters: Jake, Vicky, James, Reporter #1, Other reporters gathering around, Senator Howard, Senator Howard's aids, Chris

(JAKE and REPORTERS are standing around, waiting for the Senator. VICKY and JAMES come in and VICKY walks over to JAKE).

VICKY: Hey.

JAKE: Hi Vicky. (HE does a doubletake). Vicky? What are you doing here?

VICKY: I'm covering a story, same as you. This is my producer, James.

JAKE: A story? You're in P.R.

VICKY: And today my mother needed me in news.

JAKE (taking VICKY aside): Vick, you don't know anything about news.

VICKY: Thanks a lot. For your information, I have done some reporting before.

JAKE: On TV?

VICKY: What's the matter, Jake? Afraid I'll get the better story?

JAKE: Of course not.

VICKY: Good, then there's no problem. (SENATOR HOWARD comes out and walks to podium and speaks into microphone).

HOWARD: Thank you all for coming. I'd like to start by saying that this scandal certainly has stirred things up. I'd like you to know that you can't believe everything you hear.

REPORTER #1 (interrupting): Are you saying you didn't assult Veronica Allen?

HOWARD: I'm saying that woman is a liar.

VICKY: Really? That's funny, considering she can describe your private body parts.

JAKE (looking at Vicky): How did you know that?

VICKY: I have my sources. (to Senator). What do you have to say about her exclusive interview with the Bay City Herald next week?

JAKE: Vicky!

HOWARD: I'm not going to discuss that woman's blatant attempts to turn public opinion on her side... (JAKE grabs VICKY'S arm and SENATOR HOWARD continues talking).

JAKE: That was cute.

VICKY (grinning): I thought so.

JAKE: What the hell's gotten into you?

VICKY: Jake, you're the one who would play any dirty trick to get your story. Now you're mad because I'm playing the same game?

JAKE: You don't know what you're doing.

VICKY: Really? Is that why you're so angry?

JAKE: We'll discuss this at home.

VICKY: I can't wait. (SHE smiles).

Scene 7
Characters: Jake and Vicky
Setting: Their bedroom

(JAKE is lying in bed. VICKY joins him).

VICKY: I’m sorry about what happened today.

JAKE: Don’t worry about it. You were right, I deserved it.

VICKY: (laughs) Well you did. You should know better than to try to get info out of me.

JAKE: I think I know a way I could have gotten that information. (He kisses her gently on the lips.)

VICKY: Oh, you do, huh? And what might that be?

JAKE: This. (He kisses her again. They continue kissing. Phone rings).

VICKY: Don’t get it.

JAKE: (kissing her) I have to. It might be important. (he rolls off of Vicky and grabs the phone.) Yeah? (Pause) That is the best news! (Pause) Yeah, bright and early. See you then. (Jake hangs up the phone. He pulls Vicky back to him.) Where were we? (He kisses her.)

VICKY: What was that about?

JAKE: Nothing I can talk to you about, Ms. KBAY. (He attempts to kiss Vicky, but she pulls away)

VICKY: Either you tell me right now, or your little friend down there will be very lonely for quite some time.

JAKE: (hides his face under a pillow) I can’t tell you.

VICKY: Fine, have it your way. (She gets out of bed and heads for the shower.)

Scene 8
Characters: Jake and Vicky
Setting: The shower

(Vicky has her back turned to the shower door and is washing her face when Jake steps in. He puts his arms around her waist and starts to kiss her back.)

JAKE: Now, come on, I thought we weren’t going to fight about work.

VICKY: (laughs) We only fight on your terms I see.

JAKE: (nibbles her ear) I’ll tell you whatever you want to know.

VICKY: (turns to face Jake) Anything? (she kisses him softly on the lips)

JAKE: (closes his eyes and smiles) Yep. Anything you want.

VICKY: (starts to massage Jake’s chest) Who was on the phone?

JAKE: Chris.

VICKY: What did he say?

JAKE: (puts his arms around Vicky) He got Veronica Allen to agree to do the interview again.

VICKY: He did?

JAKE: Yeah.

(Vicky turns the water off and steps out of the shower. Jake follows and starts to kiss her again.)

VICKY: (pulls away) Not right now, honey.

JAKE: Huh? But you said -

VICKY: I have work I have to do!

(Vicky throws on her robe, leaves the bathroom and heads downstairs. Jake stands alone in the bathroom.)

Scene 9
Characters: Jake and Vicky
Setting: Cottage

(Vicky is sitting at the kitchen table writing on a note tablet. Jake walks downstairs wearing his bathrobe. He comes up behind Vicky and kisses her ear.)

JAKE: Why did you just leave me in the bathroom?

VICKY: (continues to write) I told you that I have work to do.

JAKE: (peeks over her shoulder) What are you working on? Its after midnight.

VICKY: (puts her hand over the paper) That is confidential, McKinnon.

JAKE: I can’t do anything to change that? (He kisses her neck)

VICKY: Nope.

JAKE: Come on, Vick. I told you.

VICKY: That’s because I know your weak spots.

JAKE: Oh and I don’t know your’s?

VICKY: (laughs) Apparently not.

JAKE: I am not liking this at all.

VICKY: You are such a sore loser.

JAKE: Nope, you are. Next time you want to make love, let’s see who the loser is. (Jake walks back upstairs.)

VICKY: Yeah, right.

Scene 10
Characters: Vicky and Jake
Setting: Their bedroom

(Vicky walks into the bedroom and gets into bed.)

JAKE: Are you done working already? Its only 3:00 in the morning.

VICKY: As a matter of fact, yes I am done.

JAKE: Good.

VICKY: Yeah, good. (They both turn on their sides with their backs opposite each other.) Oh and we’ll see what happens next time you want to make love.

JAKE: (sits up in bed) You think I can’t live without sex?

VICKY: (sits up and looks at him) Yes, that’s what I think.

JAKE: (laughs) Me? You’re the one who needs it every night.

VICKY: Every night? (laughs) We’ll just see about that.

JAKE: Yes we will. I bet you will come in here tomorrow night begging for me to make love to you.

VICKY: Don’t give yourself so much credit, McKinnon. Not only will you be on your knees for sex, you will be begging me for news scoops.

JAKE: Yeah, right. Are we going to shake on this little bet?

VICKY: Oh, so it's a bet now?

JAKE: If you want it to be.

VICKY: And what will I get when I win this little bet?

JAKE: Oh, when you win?

VICKY: Never mind, I will settle for the look on your face when you see that your wife has beaten you.

JAKE: Very funny. So its a deal then.

VICKY: Deal. (They shake hands. They smile and quickly kiss on the lips before lying back down again with their backs to each other.)
