Jake and Vicky Story Part 2

The Competition

Scene 1
Characters: Jake and Vicky
Setting: Their bedroom

(JAKE is in bed, reading over his notes. VICKY comes out of bathroom wearing red lace teddy).

VICKY: Hi Jake.

JAKE: Hi Vi -- (HE looks up). Hi Vicky. (VICKY seductively walks over to him and sits on the bed).

VICKY: Whatchadoin?

JAKE (looking down at his notes): Just going over some notes.

VICKY (arching her back): My back really hurts. Would you mind giving me one of your famous back rubs?

JAKE (laughing): Nice try, Vick.

VICKY: What? My back hurts.

JAKE: Oh, and you want a back rub? You're not just setting me up here?

VICKY: Of course not. I'm not cruel!

JAKE: That's debateable. But, okay. Come here. (HE takes her hand). Lay down. (VICKY lays on her stomach. JAKE begins to massage her shoulders).

VICKY: Oh, that's it.

JAKE: Feeling better?

VICKY: Tons. (JAKE massages her back. VICKY is enjoying it. JAKE blows the back of VICKY'S neck).

VICKY: Be careful there. You don't want anything sexual.

JAKE: What are the rules with this bet anyway?

VICKY: Anything goes, except intercourse. The first to suggest it or do it, loses.

JAKE: I can live with that.

VICKY: You're funny, McKinnon.

JAKE: I'm soothing too. (JAKE blows on the back of VICKY'S neck again. HE gently kisses her neck. VICKY twists her back and looks at JAKE).

VICKY: No fair! You know that makes me melt.

JAKE: Hey, you made the rules, remember? No intercourse. This isn't intercourse. Now, lay down. (VICKY lays back down).

VICKY: You're not playing fair.

JAKE (while massaging): It's okay, Vick. I've been thinking. This bet is stupid. I give in. I'm weak.

VICKY: I knew it! I win!

JAKE: Yeah, you win. Congratulations.

VICKY: I knew you were weak. God, it's good to be in the driver's seat.

JAKE: Now that the contest is over, I think we should... (HE kisses the back of her neck).

VICKY: Hmmm, keep talking. (JAKE continues to kiss her. HE's now kissing her back. VICKY rolls over to her back. JAKE kisses her face, then her neck).

JAKE: I love you, Vick.

VICKY: I love you too. (JAKE takes her straps down her arms. HE begins to pull off her teddy. VICKY helps him. JAKE takes off her teddy and throws it to the floor. HE kisses her neck, then goes down to her ankles and works up to her knees, then pauses).

JAKE: Are you hungry?

VICKY: WHAT?

JAKE: Are you hungry? (JAKE gets off of her). I'm hungry all of a sudden.

VICKY: Jake, we were -- (JAKE laughs).

JAKE: Who's driving now? (VICKY sits up and groans. SHE throws pillow at him).

VICKY: That's just not right.

JAKE: I guess we just proved who the real weak one is in this family. (HE walks out, laughing. VICKY is fuming).

Scene 2
Characters: Jake and Chris
Setting: The Herald

(JAKE walks in).

CHRIS: Where have you been?

JAKE: I spent the past hour and a half waiting for our dear friend, Veronica Allen. She was supposed to meet me at the Harbor Club at noon.

CHRIS: She called looking for you! She said your secretary called her and told her to meet you at 11 at Sassy's.

JAKE: What?

CHRIS: She waited for an hour and left.

JAKE: That's crazy! I don't even have a secretary.

CHRIS: She said it was a woman.

JAKE (shouting): Vicky! (JAKE storms out).

Scene 3
Characters: Jake and Vicky
Setting: Vicky's office/KBAY

(JAKE opens door and storms into VICKY'S office).

JAKE: Not funny, Vicky!

VICKY (innocently smiling): I don't know what you're talking about.

JAKE: You ruined my meeting with Veronica Allen!

VICKY: Jake, if you messed things up, that's your own problem. Now I have a lot of work to do, so if you'll excuse me -- (JAKE storms out. VICKY giggles).

Scene 4
Characters: Jake and Vicky
Setting: Hallway outside of VICKY'S office

(VICKY is walking down hallway. JAKE grabs her from behind and pulls her into a closet).

Scene 5
Characters: Jake and Vicky
Setting: Closet

(JAKE lets VICKY go and closes closet door).

VICKY: What the hell do you think you're doing?

JAKE (shouting): We're going to fight this out right now!

VICKY: I told you, I have work to do!

JAKE: That's too bad, Vicky! We're going to talk and we're going to talk now! (JAKE blocks closet door).

VICKY: Jake, get out of my way!

JAKE: Not until we talk.

VICKY: Jake, if you don't get out of my way --

JAKE: What Vicky? What are you going to do? There's nothing you can do. You're totally helpless this time, Vick. (JAKE gets in her face). There's not a damn thing you can do.

Scene 6
Characters: Jake and Vicky
Setting: Hallway outside closet

(VICKY comes out of closet, smiling slyly. A few seconds later, JAKE comes out. HIS hair is sticking up, his shirt is torn and coming out of his pants).

JAKE (calling after Vicky): Hold it! (VICKY stops with her back to him). You're not going to get away with this!

VICKY (turning to face him): Don't threaten me, Jake. I'd hate to have to get physical again. (SHE smiles coyly and walks away).

Scene 7
Characters: Jake and Vicky
Setting: The cottage

(JAKE is cooking dinner. VICKY comes in).

VICKY: Hi. (JAKE ignores her). Jake? I need to talk to you. I'm really sorry. Things went way too far today.

JAKE: You're damn right they did!

VICKY: I shouldn't have "beat you up."

JAKE: You did NOT beat me up!

VICKY (laughing): What can I say? You bring out the competitiveness in me. It's like when we were kids, you know? You always thought you could swing higher than I could. I couldn't let you win.

JAKE: So you tried to outswing me and ended up falling and scraping up your knees.

VICKY: And you kissed it and promised me it would feel better.

JAKE: I remember.

VICKY: And it did. Oh, Jake, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have messed up your interview.

JAKE: I think we both did some things we regret.

VICKY: We just have to realize that fun is fun, but if we're not careful, someone could get hurt. We can't let work come between us.

JAKE: Agreed. (JAKE kisses VICKY. A plane ticket falls out of VICKY'S pocket. JAKE bends down to pick it up). What's this? (HE looks at ticket). Washington, D.C.?

VICKY: Yeah. Ummm, Senator Howard's there and he's holding a press conference next week. Mom wants me to go out and cover it.

JAKE: Ohh. Yeah, Chris mentioned something about that. I think it's great that you're going.

VICKY: Thanks. (VICKY hugs HIM).

Scene 8
Characters: Jake and Chris
Setting: The Herald

JAKE (from his office calling out to Chris): Chris? Did you get me on that flight to D.C.?

CHRIS (coming into Jake's office): I told you, their booked. There are no more seats.

JAKE: I guess I'll just have to fly standby then.

CHRIS: And if you don't get on?

JAKE: I'll get on, Chris. Trust me.

Scene 9
Characters: Vicky, Security guard
Setting: Airport

(VICKY puts her purse and laptop on X-Ray belt. SHE walks through medal detector. SECURITY GUARD walks up beside her as she comes through detector).

SECURITY: I'm afraid we're going to have to open your purse.

VICKY: Oh. Okay. (SECURITY GUARD opens her purse and holds up gun).

SECURITY: Do you have a license for this?

VICKY: That's not mine.

SECURITY: It was in your purse.

VICKY: I don't care! It's not mine! I don't carry a gun!

SECURITY (pulling her to side): I'm going to have to ask you a few questions.

VICKY: You don't understand, I have a plane to catch.

SECURITY: No, YOU don't understand. You're not getting on that plane.

Scene 10
Characters: Jake and Stewardess
Setting: Airplane

(STEWARDESS walks over to JAKE'S seat).

STEWARDESS: Would you like a drink?

JAKE: Yeah, I would. I'd love some champagne if you have it. I'm celebrating.

Scene 11
Characters: Jake and Vicky
Setting: Hotel Room in D.C.

(JAKE walks into his hotel room, falls onto the bed and starts to laugh. VICKY walks out of the bathroom wearing a robe.)

VICKY: What’s so funny?

JAKE (jumps off the bed and stands up): Vick, you scared the hell out of me! What are you doing here?

VICKY: That gun maneuver wasn’t very funny, Jake. You made me miss my plane.

JAKE: I don’t know what you’re talking about.

VICKY: Sure you do. (SHE walks up to JAKE and slowly circles around him). You put a gun in my purse so I would miss the plane. It almost worked. But you forget I am a woman of unlimited resources. After I convinced the cops that my hubby planted the gun, I had my father’s jet fueled up and came down here.

JAKE: Vicky, I’m -

VICKY (puts her hand over his lips): I don’t want to hear it. I want you to sit down on that bed. (SHE pushes JAKE down on bed). And I want you to promise me that nothing like this is ever going to happen ever again.

JAKE: I promise.

VICKY: Do you? Do you really?

JAKE: Yes. I swear.

(VICKY unties the belt and lets the robe fall to the ground. JAKE'S jaw drops. VICKY walks over to JAKE and kisses him. HE kisses her back and SHE crawls on top of him.)

JAKE: What about that bet?

VICKY: I won, remember?

JAKE: (laughs) Oh, yeah. I remember -

(VICKY continues to kiss him).

VICKY: Well, I guess I still turn you on.

JAKE: You always will.

(There is a knock at the door. VICKY gets off JAKE and puts her robe back on.)

VICKY: That’s going to be for you.

JAKE: Who is it?

VICKY: Oh, its just the cops. They are just going to ask you a few questions about that gun.

(VICKY walks over to door).

Scene 12
Characters: Jake and Vicky
Setting: Vicky’s hotel room/ a few hours later

(VICKY is sitting at the table reviewing press conference notes. There is a knock at her door. VICKY puts her notes down and walks over to the door.)

VICKY (opening the door): Jake! (JAKE pushes past VICKY and walks into the room.)

JAKE: This is getting out of hand, Vicky.

VICKY: Jake, it was just -

JAKE: Just what, Vick? You almost got me arrested!

VICKY: Now you know how it feels.

JAKE: Look, I’m sorry about what I did to you. That wasn’t right. But you have just gone over the top.

VICKY: Honey, you know I’m just competitive. (SHE tries to hug JAKE, but HE pushes her away.)

JAKE: Don’t. I don’t even know how I can look at you right now. (HE starts to walk toward to door, but VICKY grabs his arm).

VICKY: Jake, don’t leave because of this. This is so stupid!

JAKE (turns to face VICKY): Do you not understand that this is my job we’re talking about? This might all be a game to you, but this is my job that I care about.

VICKY: I’m sorry. (Jake goes over to the door.) I’m sorry! (HE leaves). Damn it, I have something to tell you.

Scene 13
Characters: Vicky, Jake, Senator Howard, Press Members, Man
Setting: Press Conference

(VICKY and JAKE are sitting on opposite sides of the room. SENATOR HOWARD enters the room. Bulbs start to flash and reporters immediately begin asking questions.)

DIFFERENT MEMBERS OF THE PRESS: Can you tell us - what do you plan to do about - is it true that - what do you think about-

HOWARD: Ladies and Gentlemen, if I could please have your attention. I’m sorry to say that I have opted to have my attorney answer all legal questions for me. As for answers to any other questions you might have, please look for the exclusive interview in the Bay City Herald next week.

(The press begin shouting again as HOWARD walks away. JAKE has a puzzled look on his face. He looks over to where VICKY had been sitting, but she isn’t there anymore. A man walks over to JAKE).

MAN: Mr. McKinnon?

JAKE: Yes?

MAN: Please come with me. Senator Howard would like to talk with you now.

JAKE: Ok.

Scene 14
Characters: Jake, Senator Howard
Setting: An office

(JAKE walks into an office with the man. HOWARD walks in and shakes JAKE'S hand)

HOWARD: Hello, Mr. McKinnon.

JAKE: I think there seems to be some mistake. I wasn’t aware you agreed to do an interview with my paper.

HOWARD: Oh, I just made the decision about (looks at his watch) oh, twenty minutes ago.

JAKE: Not that I'm not grateful, but why the Herald? There are numerous, more established papers who would have jumped at this -

HOWARD: I can’t reveal who made me change my mind because I made a promise, but I will tell you that you have one smart and beautiful wife, Mr. McKinnon.

JAKE: Vicky. (Stands up.) I can’t believe her. (HE runs out of the office.)

Scene 15
Characters: Jake & Vicky
Setting: Airport

(VICKY is about the board a plane, when JAKE comes running up.)

JAKE (out of breath): Vick! Vicky, wait!

VICKY (turning around): Jake, I have to go. I’ll see you at home.

JAKE: No, wait. Please. I’m sorry.

VICKY: Don’t be. You were right. This job isn’t for me. (SHE turns to board, but JAKE pulls her to him and kisses her.)

JAKE: Don’t go.

VICKY: Jake, I was such a jerk.

JAKE: So was I. I can’t believe what you did for me today. How did you manage that?

VICKY: Well I still had some connections down here. Guess my marriage to Grant wasn’t a complete waste.

JAKE: I just can’t believe you did that for me.

VICKY: I would do anything for you.

JAKE: (kisses her) Anything?

VICKY: Well…(laughs) Yes.

JAKE: Then don’t quit. I think you’re a great reporter. You sure gave me a run for my money. I need someone like you to keep me on my toes.

VICKY: (smiles) I love you, McKinnon.

(JAKE takes VICKY'S bag and puts his arm around her. THEY begin to walk towards the exit.)

JAKE: So you know, the hotel bathroom has a Jacuzzi.

VICKY: Good, we just might have to celebrate - not just the interview either.

JAKE: I like the sound of that.

VICKY: I'm serious, Jake. I have a surprise for you.

JAKE: What?

VICKY: I'll tell you all about it at the hotel.

JAKE: Come on, give me a hint.

VICKY: Your hint is that it will arrive in 9 months. Well, 7 months and 2 weeks.

JAKE: You -- you're -- (Vicky nods).

(Jake picks Vicky up and kisses her as they leave).
