Baby McKinnon Enters the World
Scene 1
Characters: Jake and Vicky
Setting: The nursery
(JAKE is staring at wall. VICKY walks in and puts her hands
around his waist from behind).
VICKY: Penny for your thoughts.
JAKE: Can you believe that in a few weeks, we're
going to have a little baby in here?
VICKY: I know. I can't wait!
JAKE: So where's my penny?
VICKY: I have something MUCH better in mind.
(SHE kisses HIM).
JAKE: I love you. And I love our little one in
there. (JAKE rubs VICKY'S stomach). Our little Millenium baby.
VICKY: Jake, I'm not due until January 14.
JAKE: She'll come through, Vick. She's a
McKinnon.
VICKY: She?
JAKE: It's a girl. I know it's a girl.
VICKY: I thought only mother's had intuition
about the sex of the baby.
JAKE: Fathers know a thing or two.
Scene 2
Characters: Vicky and Donna
Setting: The cottage
VICKY: Mom, you really didn't have to do this.
(DONNA hands her three presents).
DONNA: That's what grandmothers are for,
Darling. If I'm not around to spoil this child, who will?
VICKY: Thank you. (opens first box and takes out
a little girl's outfit). This is so cute! Where did you find it?
DONNA: At this boutique downtown.
VICKY (opening second box and pulling out a
little boy's outfit): Awww, how adorable!
DONNA: Well, if you knew the sex of the baby,
there would be three distinct outfits there.
VICKY: Mom, we've already discussed it. (Opens
third box and pulls out a little girl's outfit).
DONNA: Is it a wonder what I'm wishing for?
VICKY (laughing): Thank you, they're all lovely.
(SHE hugs and kisses DONNA).
DONNA: Now, I have to go for a little while, but
I'll be back in plenty of time to baby-sit the boys later.
VICKY: You know, I don't know about going out
tonight. I'm kind of tired.
DONNA: Darling, you have to. It's Christmas Eve
and Jake is looking so forward to it.
VICKY: I know, but --
DONNA: No buts, Victoria. You and Jake are going
to have a night to yourselves.
VICKY: What about the kids? I can't leave them
on Christmas Eve.
DONNA: You are going to spend time with the kids
before you leave. And then tomorrow, we'll all have Christmas
dinner as a family.
VICKY: I don't know.
DONNA: Victoria, Jake needs this - and so do
you.
Scene 3
Characters: Jake and Vicky
Setting: Playground in Bay City
(JAKE has his hands over VICKY'S eyes as he walks her to the
swings. HE removes his hands. There's a table with candles.
There's also a radio on the
table).
VICKY: Jake, we haven't been here since --
JAKE: Since we first talked about having a baby.
And now our wish is coming true.
VICKY (referring to table): What's that?
JAKE: I'm glad you asked. (HE lifts top off
first dish). Pizza. (HE lifts top off second dish). Cheese flips.
(HE lifts top off third dish). Chocolate cake for dessert. (HE
picks up cans of root beer). And, of course, root beer to wash it
all down with.
VICKY: Have I told you how much I love you?
(JAKE takes HER hands and pushes "play" on radio.
NSYNC'S "In Love On Christmas starts to play". THEY
dance).
JAKE: This is how it's meant to be, Vick. You
and me forever.
VICKY: I've always known that. Part of me has
always known that one day you and I would be at this point.
You're the only one who has always loved me unconditionally.
You've never tried to change me or "teach" me the
morals of life. You just accept me.
JAKE: I do. I always will. (JAKE pulls VICKY
closer).
Scene 4
Characters: Jake, Vicky, Marley, Donna, Paulina, Remy, Amanda,
Etta Mae, Rachel, Felicia, Josie, Toni, and Chris
Setting: The cottage
(JAKE and VICKY are on front porch).
VICKY: Thank you so much for tonight. I had such
a good time.
JAKE: Me too. (HE opens door and VICKY enters.
The lights are out).
VICKY: Mom? (Turns on lights and everyone jumps
out).
EVERYONE: Surprise! (VICKY looks surprised and
JAKE smiles).
VICKY: Oh my god!
DONNA: Were you surprised, Darling?
VICKY: You did this? (DONNA nods. Looks at
JAKE). Did you know about this?
JAKE: Yeah, I did. (VICKY hugs him).
VICKY: Thank you. (SHE goes over to DONNA). And
you, come here. (SHE hugs DONNA).
DONNA: I love you, Victoria.
PAULINA: Ok, now lets get this party going!
VICKY (to JAKE): Where are you going?
JAKE: Oh, this is a chick party. Chris and I
have (using a deep voice) macho stuff to do.
CHRIS: That's right. Man stuff.
TONI: Oh, man stuff?
VICKY (to CHRIS): Well, you take care of him.
(SHE kisses JAKE).
CHRIS: I'll guard him with my life. (CHRIS
kisses TONI. JAKE and CHRIS leave).
Scene 5
Characters: Vicky and Paulina
Setting: The kitchen
(VICKY goes into kitchen. PAULINA follows).
PAULINA: Vicky? Is something wrong?
VICKY: No, not at all. I'm just so happy.
PAULINA: Yeah, I know how it is. I'm so happy
for you and Jake.
VICKY: Thank you, Paulina. Actually, Jake and I
wanted to ask you a question.
PAULINA: Sure, what is it?
VICKY: You know how it is having a baby. We just
want to make sure this kid is always taken care of, you know?
PAULINA: Yeah.
VICKY: That's why we'd like to know if you would
consider being our baby's godmother?
PAULINA: Oh, Vicky. I would be honored to be
godmother. Thank you. (PAULINA hugs VICKY. ETTA MAE enters).
ETTA MAE: I think Rachel's had a little too much
to drink. (SHE laughs).
VICKY: Why is that?
ETTA MAE: She's standing on the table, giving us
a strip show. (VICKY and PAULINA laugh).
VICKY: You're kidding.
ETTA MAE: Honey, I wouldn't kid about Rachel
Cory being plastered.
PAULINA: Oh no, we better take care of this.
(SHE leaves).
(VICKY leaves kitchen. ETTA MAE follows.
Scene 6
Characters: Vicky, Marley, Donna, Paulina, Remy, Amanda, Etta
Mae, Rachel, Felicia, Josie, and Toni
Setting: The cottage
(RACHEL is in the background dancing on the coffee table as
PAULINA and AMANDA help her down. MARLEY walks over to VICKY).
MARLEY: Hi there.
VICKY (hugging Marley): I can't believe you all
kept this a secret from me.
MARLEY: That's what a surprise is all about. I
missed you.
VICKY: I'm so glad you're finally home. Your
little niece or nephew here will certainly be happy about that.
MARLEY: You would let me be a part of the baby's
life?
VICKY: Of course I would. Marley, what happened
between us is in the past. I can't forget it, but I have forgiven
it. I think all we can do now is move on - as sisters. (MARLEY
hugs VICKY).
Scene 7
Characters: Jake and Vicky
Setting: Their bedroom
(JAKE and VICKY are in bed).
VICKY: Thank you for the party last night.
JAKE: It was all Donna's idea.
VICKY: It was wonderful. (Pause). I need to talk
to you about something.
JAKE (light-heartedly): Sounds serious.
VICKY: Jake, seriously.
JAKE: What is it? (VICKY slowly lifts herself
out of bed).
VICKY: I was talking to mom last night, and
there's this story in New York --
JAKE: No.
VICKY: Jake, just hear me out.
JAKE: Vick, you're nine months pregnant. You
can't travel, even if you wanted to.
VICKY: That's why I was thinking about driving.
You and me. We could leave the kids with mom.
JAKE: That's crazy.
VICKY: No, it's not. We could do it!
JAKE: What's going to happen if you go into
labor on the road?
VICKY: We take an exit.
JAKE: Forget it.
VICKY: Jake --
JAKE: Vicky, you're not getting this story and
that's that. (HE kisses her on the cheek, picks up towel, and
goes to take a shower).
Scene 8
Characters: Jake and Vicky
Setting: Their bedroom
(VICKY is now dressed. JAKE comes in, ready to leave for work).
JAKE: I'm about to leave.
VICKY: Bye.
JAKE: No kiss? (JAKE walks towards VICKY). Come
on, don't tell me you're mad about before.
VICKY: I just don't understand why you won't
agree to it.
JAKE: We'll discuss it tonight. (HE gives her a
kiss and leaves).
Scene 9
Characters: Jake and Vicky
Setting: The cottage
(VICKY is sitting in living room, waiting for JAKE. SHE has
packed two suitcases and a picnic basket. JAKE walks in).
JAKE: Hi Vick. (Looks around). What's all this?
VICKY: The kids are at mom's. I was just waiting
for you to get home and pack up the car.
JAKE: I said no.
VICKY: And I said yes. You know you're going to
end up agreeing with me anyway, so why not just do it now and
save us both the time?
JAKE: What makes you so sure I'm going to let
you have your way this time?
VICKY: Because I know you. You always let me
have my way.
JAKE: Not this time, Vick. I'm worried, ok? I'm
concerned for the baby.
VICKY: The baby is fine. Jake, we could drive to
New York tonight and be there by morning.
JAKE: Tomorrow is New Year's Eve.
VICKY: So we come back the day after. Look, I
know my body. A woman knows when she's going to have a baby and
I'm telling you - we have time. (VICKY hugs JAKE). And besides,
wouldn't it be completely romantic to spend New Year's Eve in New
York City? Come on, it's the millenium, and I don't want to spend
it fighting, which is exactly what will happen if we stay here.
JAKE: Fine, I'll take you to New York. But
that's it, Vicky!
VICKY: Well, on the way, I would like to discuss
going to Times Square to watch the ball drop. (SHE walks out.
JAKE looks frustrated).
Scene 10
Characters: Jake and Vicky
Setting: Madison Avenue Towers (NYC hotel room)/New Year's Eve
JAKE: Four more hours of the 20th Century.
VICKY: Remind me to call the kids a bit later.
JAKE: They're probably having a blast. I bet
Donna went all out with her millenium party. (JAKE looks out
window). Come here, Vick, you've gotta see this. There must be 2
million people down there. (VICKY joins him by window).
VICKY: I'm so glad we're here - together. (THEY
kiss. VICKY pulls away). Oh no.
JAKE: What is it, what's wrong?
VICKY: Nothing, it's ok.
JAKE: Vick? What's going on?
VICKY: Ok, you have to promise me you won't
freak out.
JAKE: What?
VICKY: My water broke.
JAKE: Ok, I can handle that. Your water broke,
no big deal. (HE walks over to bed and lays down. After a second,
he sits bolt upright and begins to shout). What do you mean your
water broke? You're in labor? Oh my god!
VICKY: Jake, calm down.
JAKE: We have to do something!
VICKY: Jake, take a breath.
JAKE: I have to get a cab!
VICKY: You're not going to find a cab tonight,
it's New Year's Eve. Besides, all the roads are blocked off for
the ball dropping.
JAKE: If you can be in labor, I can find a cab!
(HE helps VICKY out of the room as they leave).
Scene 11
Characters: Jake, Vicky, Cab Driver
Setting: Cab
(CAB DRIVER is driving. VICKY is sporadically having
contractions).
CAB DRIVER: Nice night to be in labor.
JAKE: Tell me about it. I think you're the only
cab driver out tonight.
CAB DRIVER: It's hard for them to get around
with the crowds in Times Square. So are you excited?
JAKE: Are you kidding? Vick and I are going to
have the Millenium Baby.
VICKY: Jake, you don't know that.
JAKE: Trust me, Vicky.
CAB DRIVER: You know the first baby born in New
York becomes a local celebrity.
JAKE: No kidding?
CAB DRIVER: Yeah, the city is sponsoring a ton
of prizes for the little one, as well as press coverage of the
baby's first few days.
JAKE (to Vicky): You hear that, honey? Our
baby's going to be the New York celebrity baby.
VICKY: Jake, midnight is a couple of hours away.
(VICKY has another contraction).
JAKE: It's ok. Do your breathing. (HE holds HER
hand). I'm telling you, it's going to happen. (JAKE gets a pain
in his stomach). Ow!
VICKY: What's wrong?
JAKE: All of a sudden, I just got this pain. (HE
gets another pain). Ow!
VICKY: Jake, are you ok? You need to have a
doctor take a look at you.
JAKE: I'm fine. I'm sure it was nothing. (VICKY
has a contraction. JAKE has a pain).
Scene 12
Characters: Jake, Vicky, Cab Driver, and Nurse
Setting: Hospital
(CAB DRIVER wheels JAKE in to hospital in a wheelchair. VICKY is
walking. THEY walk over to Nurse's station).
CAB DRIVER: Hi, this woman's having a baby.
NURSE (pointing to Jake): Who's this?
CAB DRIVER: Father to be.
VICKY: I think he's having sympathy pains.
NURSE (to Vicky): Ok, you come with me. Nurse
Allen will take care of him.
VICKY (to Jake): Ok, honey, I'll see you in a
little while.
JAKE: I'll be there as soon as I can. Don't have
her without me. (VICKY kisses JAKE).
Scene 13
Characters: Jake, Woman, Man, and Doctor
Setting: Hospital pay phone
(JAKE is on phone with DONNA).
JAKE: She's fine, Donna. She's about to give
birth to the Millenium Baby, how could she not be?... I'm telling
you, this will be the first baby born in the year 2000. I'm sure
of it!... I'll tell her. She'd love it. Tell the boys we'll see
them in the morning and they'll have a new brother or sister to
play with... Ok, bye. (HE hangs up and begins to walk away as he
sees WOMAN being wheeled in by DOCTOR. MAN is following).
DOCTOR: I'd say another hour or so before you
deliver, Mrs. Harris.
MAN: Hear that, honey? That puts it right around
midnight. We just might have the Y2K baby. (THEY walk into room).
JAKE (to himself): Like hell! (HE runs into
VICKY'S room).
Scene 14
Characters: Vicky, Jake, Nurse
Setting: Hospital Birthing Room
(VICKY is lying down in the hospital bed. JAKE bursts in the room
like a madman wearing scrubs.)
JAKE: (out of breath) Vicky - (running to her
side and taking her hand) Are you okay?
VICKY: Yeah, just great. I’m getting ready
to have a baby, what do you think?
JAKE: (rubs her forehead and brushes her away
off her face) I’m sorry. I’m here for you.
VICKY: Wanna switch places?
JAKE: (kisses her cheek) You know I would.
NURSE: (to VICKY) You’re at 6 centimeters,
100 percent effaced. If you want drugs, now’s your chance.
VICKY: (squeezing JAKE’S hand tightly)
Nope, I want to do this naturally.
JAKE: (in anguish) Are you sure about that
honey?
VICKY: Yes, positive.
NURSE: I’m going to update the doctor on
your status. I’ll be back.
(NURSE leaves.)
JAKE: There’s a couple in the room next
door. They think they’re going to have the Millenium Baby
too. (laughs) They think they’re going to beat a McKinnon.
VICKY: (squeezing JAKE’S hand again) Owww!
This is a bad one.
JAKE: Do you want to walk around? What can I do
to help?
VICKY: (turns on her side, facing JAKE) I think
this might help a little.
JAKE: (gives HER a quick peck on the lips)
You’re doing great. But you’re going to have to wait
(looks at his watch) for another hour to have the baby.
VICKY: (laughs) Thanks a lot, McKinnon.
Scene 15
Characters: Jake and Vicky
Setting: Hospital Room
(JAKE comes back in the room carrying a bag of cheeseflips and
rootbeer.)
VICKY: Oh, is that for me?
JAKE: I didn’t know you wanted any. (VICKY
looks disappointed) I’m just kidding, honey. Of course its
for you. (HE leans over and kisses her on the cheek.) How are the
contractions?
VICKY: (sarcastically) Oh, they’re
wonderful! What the hell kind of question is that? Why don’t
you try squeezing a watermelon out of your nose and let me know
how its going.
JAKE: (looks scared) I’m sorry.
VICKY: How did I let you get me into this?
JAKE: Because I’m so irresistible. (kisses
her cheek) Speaking of resisting, do you think you can hold off a
little longer before you start pushing?
VICKY: Jake?
JAKE: Yeah?
VICKY: Come here. (JAKE leans in for a kiss and
VICKY slugs his arm) If I hear one more thing about this
Millenium Baby I’m going to scream.
JAKE: Ow! I’m sorry.
Scene 16
Characters: Jake, Vicky, Nurse, Doctor
Setting: Hospital Birthing Room
(VICKY is in hard labor, and JAKE is right by her side holding
her hand and rubbing her leg with the other.)
VICKY: (breathing hard) Oh, I really think I
need to push.
JAKE: Just wait for ten more minutes. Then
we’ll win the contest!
VICKY: (looking into his eyes) Damn it, Jake. I
don’t know if I can. Ow!
(DOCTOR and NURSE enter the room. The DOCTOR puts on his gloves
and is checking VICKY.)
DOCTOR: Eight centimeters.
VICKY: That’s it?
DOCTOR: Yes, but you’ll be ready to push in
no time. We’ll be back in ten minutes.
JAKE: Wait!
DOCTOR: Yes?
JAKE: (looks at VICKY who is breathing heavily)
Nothing, we’ll see you in ten minutes. (DOCTOR leaves) Vick,
Vick can you try to push a little?
VICKY: Jake, give it up! I can’t take much
more of this! Ow!
JAKE: Is the baby coming?
VICKY: Shut up!
JAKE: (goes to the foot of the bed and lifts up
sheet) Well, I can’t see the head. Come on little baby, you
have eight minutes to make your entrance. (VICKY instantly kicks
JAKE in the face) Ouch! That was uncalled for!
VICKY: I told you to stop it. And I mean it.
Either stop it or get out of my sight!
JAKE: (walks back up to VICKY and grabs her
hand) I’m sorry, I’ll stop. I promise.
VICKY: Thank God.
(DOCTOR and NURSE enter the room a few minutes later.)
DOCTOR: Are you ready, Vicky?
VICKY: Yes, definitely. I have to push now!
DOCTOR: Not yet. Its not time. You still have a
few minutes.
(VICKY squeezes JAKE’S hand tightly.)
VICKY: I have to push, now.
JAKE: (nervously) Shouldn’t we be ready to
push yet? Vicky says she feels like she’s ready to push, so
what’s going on here?
VICKY: (smiling at JAKE) Honey, its okay -
OWWWWWW!! Oh my God. Owww!! (to JAKE) I can feel the baby moving
down. Jake- (VICKY starts to cry.)
JAKE: (wipes the tears from VICKY’S face)
Honey, everything is fine. You are doing great. We’re going
to be holding our baby in no time.
VICKY: (still crying) I really need to push.
JAKE: (looks at his watch and smiles) We are
making perfect time. Its ten seconds til midnight.
DOCTOR: (checking VICKY again) I think
you’re right, let’s start pushing.
(JAKE helps VICKY sit up a little in the bed)
DOCTOR: Okay, that’s great. Now just give
me a little push.
(VICKY takes a deep breath and starts to push. JAKE continues to
rub her leg and hold onto her hand.)
DOCTOR: Whoa, okay, we already have the head.
JAKE: (starts to cry in amazement) That’s
our baby.
VICKY: (crying, looks at JAKE) I can’t
believe it.
(Baby in next room starts to cry.)
JAKE: I guess they had their baby.
DOCTOR: Ok, Vicky now, take a deep breath and
let’s push the baby out.
VICKY: Oh, oh! (HER legs are shaking terribly)
DOCTOR: (baby starts to cry) Its a girl!
JAKE: (cries and kisses VICKY) Its a girl!! I
have a daughter! We have a daughter!!
VICKY: I can’t believe she is finally here!
JAKE: (To VICKY) Oh, thank you so much. I love
you. I love you.
DOCTOR: Congratulations! (To NURSE) What time is
it?
NURSE: Its 12:04 A.M.
VICKY: (NURSE gives the baby, which is wrapped
in a pink blanket, to VICKY) Hi little girl. I’m your mommy.
JAKE: She’s so beautiful. (HE kisses VICKY
on the cheek and then kisses the baby.)
VICKY: Wanna hold her?
JAKE: Is it okay?
VICKY: Of course its okay, she’s yours.
JAKE: (takes the baby from VICKY and starts to
cry) She is so tiny.
VICKY: (To JAKE) I’m sorry we didn’t
win the contest. I know it was important to you.
JAKE: (kisses her softly) Yes we did. I won when
I married you. She is perfect, just like her mother.
(End of scene)
Scene 17
Characters: Vicky, Jake, Baby, Nurse
Setting: Vicky’s private hospital room, an hour later
(VICKY is alone in her room. JAKE comes in smiling.)
JAKE: She’s absolutely gorgeous.
VICKY: (reaching her arms out for JAKE) Did you
get to hold her again?
JAKE: (hugging VICKY) Yes, she’s perfect.
VICKY: She really is beautiful.
(NURSE enters the room with baby)
NURSE: I’m sure you’ve been waiting
for this little one. (gives baby to VICKY)
VICKY: (tears up) Oh! (looks at JAKE) I
can’t wait for the boys to meet her.
JAKE: Donna and the boys are flying in today.
VICKY: (to the NURSE) Is she ready to nurse yet?
NURSE: Yes, you can start nursing right away.
You can hit the call button if you need me.
(NURSE leaves)
VICKY: (kisses the BABY, then kisses JAKE) Thank
you so much for the most beautiful little girl.
JAKE: No, thank you.
VICKY: I couldn’t have done this without
you.
JAKE: Well, I guess that’s true.
VICKY: (hits JAKE) Very funny, wise guy.
JAKE: So shouldn't you be feeding our hungry
little girl?
VICKY: (starting to nurse the BABY) I was just
getting to that. (watching the BABY) Well, she seems to know what
she’s doing.
JAKE: You know we’re going to have to start
calling her something other than "she."
VICKY: You got any suggestions??
JAKE: Victoria. It's gotta be Vicky. (VICKY
smiles).
VICKY: Don’t you think it would be
confusing to have two Vickys?
JAKE: No, not at all. Big Vicky, little Vicky.
VICKY: Somehow the idea of being referred to as
"Big Vicky" doesn’t appeal to me.
JAKE: Let’s name her Millenium.
VICKY: Ha ha, very funny.
JAKE: (looks out the window) We fell in love in
this city, maybe we can find her a New York-style name.
VICKY: Well, we’re not naming her New York
City if that’s what you’re thinking.
JAKE: Hmmm. (HE sits down on the bed and reaches
into his pocket and a matchbook falls out. He picks it up and
smiles.)
VICKY: What? What is that? (JAKE hands her the
matchbook) Madison Avenue Towers?
JAKE: Yeah.
JAKE & VICKY: Madison!
VICKY: I love it.
JAKE: So do I.
VICKY: I have an idea for her middle name.
JAKE: Me too.
JAKE & VICKY: Bridget.
JAKE: Oh, I love you so much.
VICKY: I love you for thinking of her.
JAKE: I know we would both love for Bridget to
see her.
VICKY: She’s going to watch over Madison.
She’ll be her guardian angel.
JAKE: That’s right.
VICKY (looking at MADISON): Welcome to our
family, Madison Bridget McKinnon.
