Overcoming Obstacles, Part I
This
storyline starts the day after Grant's funeral. Jake has been
pretending to Vicky that everything is okay between them. Vicky
has just returned home from dropping the boys off for 2 weeks of
camp.
Scene 1
Characters: Jake and Vicky
Setting: The cottage
VICKY: (walks out of the kitchen into the family
room) Jake? Jake where are you? (to herself) Hmm, he must be
upstairs.
(Close in on a suitcase on the bed. Jake walks out of the
bathroom carrying a shaving kit as Vicky walks into the bedroom.)
VICKY: (smiles and walks over to Jake). Are we
taking a trip? Just you and me so we can concentrate on making
our baby?
JAKE: (walks past Vicky and over to the
suitcase) No, we aren't taking a trip. I am leaving, Vick. I'm
moving out.
VICKY: What do you mean your moving out?
Scene 2
Characters: Jake & Vicky
Setting: the cottage
JAKE: (turns to face Vicky) Exactly what I said.
VICKY: (walks towards Jake) Why? What's wrong?
JAKE: (taking Vicky's hands and leads her over
and sits her in the chair and kneels down beside her) I continued
to stay in this house even though you were lying to me. You know
I was worried about your safety and the boys. Now that Grant is
dead and out of our lives, the threat is over. I know that you
haven't been yourself since you were locked up in the basement,
but you didn't have to lie to me, Vick. This thing that happened
with Grant finally made me realize that no matter how much I love
you I will always take second place in your life.
VICKY: Jake, that's just not true. You know I
love you.
JAKE: Just listen to me, okay? I have been
trying to figure things out and I think I finally realized what
is going on here. Maybe I talked you into thinking that you were
in love with me.
VICKY: How can you say that? I do love you,
Jake.
JAKE: (puts his hand on Vicky's face) I know
that you love me, but I think deep down you only love me as your
best friend. All our lives, I have tried to be there for you
whenever you needed me. I changed for you because I love you. I
got through the lies about Shane even though it completely tore
me apart. I made it through Marley holding you hostage and hoped
that we could finally be totally together. Then when I finally
get you home, you spend all your time thinking about Grant
instead of us. We needed to be healing as a family and planning
that baby we talked about. If you really loved me, I would be the
only man you would want to be kissing or thinking about and you
wouldn't feel the need to lie to me.
VICKY: Why don't you see I had to get Grant for
our family?
JAKE: I know you think that you had to do that,
but in reality you just pushed me aside. I told you before we got
engaged that I couldn't settle for second place but that seems to
be the way it turned out. But not anymore. Vicky I deserve to be
loved by someone who loves me as much as I love them and I know
now that I have to have that.
Scene 3
Characters: Jake & Vicky
Setting: the cottage
VICKY: Jake, how can you say that I only love
you as a best friend? (Jake grabs the suitcase and Vicky grabs
Jake's arm) Please stay so we can talk about this and work it
out.
JAKE: I can't do that Vicky. I have to leave
this house. I have to find a way to get you completely out of my
heart and my soul. Right now all I know is that I can't see you
anymore. I can't even be your friend. At least not now. Maybe
someday. I want to be there for the boys and I will make every
effort to help them if they ever need me. But as long as I don't
have to see or talk to you. Could I please pick them up after
they get back from camp so I can try to explain to them what is
happening?
VICKY: (starting to cry) What can I do to change
this? I will do anything Jake.
JAKE: (tears forming in his eyes) Honey, I wish
that you could change it, but I can't make you love me the way I
need to be loved. God knows if I knew how I'd do it but I don't.
(he picks up the suitcase and walks over to Vicky and kisses her
lightly on the lips) Goodbye Vicky. (he walks out of the room,
down the stairs and out of the house)
Camera flashes then to Vicky upstairs and Vicky is holding Jake's
pillow and is crying.
Scene 4
Characters: Jake, Chris and Toni
Setting: Chris's apartment
(Jake is knocking on Chris's door and Chris gets up to answer
it.)
CHRIS (opens the door): Jake what are you doing
here? (points to the suicase) What is that for? It doesn't have
anything to do with me dressing up like the Love lady again does
it?
JAKE: (being somber) Chris I need a place to
stay for a while. I left Vicky.
CHRIS: (puzzled) Come on in.
TONI: (walking in to the room and sees Jake) Hi
Jake.
JAKE: Toni
TONI: (looking at Jake and then Chris) I think I
better be going. Mama needs me to help her out at the Lucky Lady
for the lunch crowd. (she kisses Chris and mouths call me later)
Bye Jake.
CHRIS: (sitting down on the sofa) Okay buddy
tell me what happened from beginning to end and don't leave
anything out.
JAKE: I don't want to talk about it right now. I
don't even want to think about Vicky Hudson.
CHRIS: Okay. I won't make you talk right now but
you need to get it off your chest. I will be here when you are
ready.
JAKE: Thanks, Chris. I will only be here until I
can find a permanent place to live. I will try to stay out of
your way.
CHRIS: Don't worry about it.
(Chris goes into the other room to call Toni. Jake sitting on the
couch with tears running down his face.)
Scene 5
Characters: Vicky & Donna
Setting: the cottage the next morning
(Vicky is coming down the stairs with a depressed look on her
face and Donna is in the living room.)
DONNA: Good morning. How are - What is wrong?
(Vicky starts to cry and walks over to the window.)
DONNA: Darling, why are you crying? Where is
Jake?
VICKY: (turning towards Donna) Jake left last
night.
DONNA: Where did he go? Did he take a business
trip?
VICKY: (crying a little bit more) He moved out
and I think I may have lost him forever.
DONNA: Why did he move out? Because you lied
about Grant? I told you were risking everything you cherished if
you kept on with your plan to get Grant.
VICKY: Mom I don't need this right now.
DONNA: I'm sorry, darling.
VICKY: Jake left because he believes that I am
not "in love" with him. He said he thinks that I only
love him as my best friend.
DONNA: Well I don't believe that to be true. You
need to go and find him and bring him back home.
VICKY: I don't think I could say anything at
this point to get him to come home.
DONNA: Don't give up! Just give him a day to
rethink things and then go make your move and he will come home.
Just you wait and see.
VICKY: I pray you are right.
Scene
6
Characters: Jake & Chris
Setting: the Herald
(Jake is sitting in his office and Chris walks in.)
CHRIS: How are you doing this morning?
JAKE: How do you think I am? My life with Vicky
is over.
CHRIS: Are you ready to talk about what happened
yet?
JAKE: What is left to talk about? I just
realized after this Grant fiasco that no matter what I do Vicky
isn't going to love me the way I love her.
CHRIS: What are you talking about? That woman is
totally in love with you!
JAKE: I'd love to believe that Chris but I
always take second place in her life. I think that maybe I pushed
her into believing that she was in love with me.
CHRIS: Man, I can't explain nor guess why Vicky
does the things she does but I sure as heck don't think that she
isn't in love with you. You guys belong together end of story. I
think you need to think about what you might be throwing away by
being insecure about her love. (he walks out of Jakes office)
JAKE: (staring at the door, mumbles) Your
supposed to be my friend.
Scene 7
Characters: Jake & Paulina
Setting: Paulina's House
(Jake knocks on the door. Paulina goes and answers the door,
looks at Jakes face and pulls him in the house.)
PAULINA: What gives? I thought you would be
relieved that Grant is out of your for good.
JAKE: (shaking his head). Grant is out of my
life and so is Vicky.
PAULINA: (shocked) What are you talking about?
JAKE: I left Vicky.
PAULINA: Why on earth would you do that?
Especially now when Grant won't bother you guys anymore.
JAKE: I realized that I am have been living in a
dream world for a long time because I believed that Vicky truly
loved me but this stuff with Grant just made me wake up to the
fact that she doesn't love me the way I love her.
PAULINA: Jake, I know Vicky has caused you some
real heartache with all the stuff that has happened. First the
stuff with Shane and now with Grant. But I believe that she loves
you.
JAKE: I know she loves me but I don't think she
is "in love" with me.
PAULINA: Maybe all of this is my fault for
trying to nudge her in your direction when you guys got engaged.
Maybe she wasn't ready.
JAKE: No Paulina, this is my doing and now I
have to figure out how to get her out of my heart, head and soul.
I've told her that I can't even be her friend anymore.
PAULINA: Oh Jake, are you sure?
JAKE: At least for now. I need to get out of
here. Thanks for being here for me.
PAULINA: Jake you know I will be here for you no
matter what, but you need to think things through and decide what
is right for you.
Scene
8
Characters: Vicky & Etta Mae
Setting: The cottage
(Vicky is sitting on the couch and Etta Mae just walks in the
cottage door.)
ETTA MAE:(going up to Vicky): Come here baby
girl and let me hug you. Donna called me and told me that Jake
left. It is going to be okay.
VICKY: (crying and hugging Etta Mae): I can't
believe that he just moved out like this. He says that he thinks
I don't love him. I know I lied to him about Grant even when I
had promised him that I never would lie again after Shane, but I
thought he would understand that I had to get Grant. I thought we
could work it out.
ETTA MAE: Honey, you better tell Etta Mae
everything that happened so I can try and help you figure things
out. So let's start with Grant.
VICKY: I told Jake that I had stopped going
after Grant but I didn't.
ETTA MAE: That's it. That's all that happened?
VICKY: No. I took Grant's side in an argument
and Jake got put in jail and I left him there overnight.
ETTA MAE: Not a good thing to do to your own
husband. Anything else?
VICKY: I was kissing Grant at the airport and
Jake saw us. Then Jake found Grant's cufflink and found out that
Grant was in our bedroom.
ETTA MAE: You sure know how to make a mess of
your life don't you honey? I know you probably don't want to hear
this, but you know me, I don't hold anything back. It sounds like
Jake had a very good reason for being upset with you.
VICKY: But don't you understand I did it for my
family.
ETTA MAE: Did you do it for your family?
VICKY: Yes, why else would I do it?
ETTA MAE: Maybe you need to ask yourself why the
stuff with Grant happened and what about the mess with Shane. Why
did that happen? Maybe you need to do some soul searching to
figure why you let those things happen even though you knew that
it would hurt Jake. You need to figure out what that means. Maybe
you really aren't in love with Jake and you only love him as a
friend. Jake loves you completely and he deserves the same. If
you can't give him that then you need to let him go for both your
sakes. Now I have got to get out of here but you call me if you
need me. (She hugs Vicky and leaves.)
Scene 9
Characters: Vicky
Setting: the swings in Lassiter
(Vicky is sitting in her swing thinking about her & Jake's
past. She begins to think about the times that she hurt Jake. We
see flashbacks of Vicky turning down Jake's marriage proposal at
the swings, cut to Vicky telling Jake she could never love him
the way he wants her to, cut to Jake saying good-bye to her on
the docks after he had seen Vicky kissing Shane in Lassiter, cut
to Jake telling her his worst fear is that she realizes that they
are just a big mistake, cut to them in the courtroom, cut to Jake
after he got home from being in jail where he asked her if she
wanted him in her life. The last clip is of Jake walking out of
the bedroom with his suitcase.)
VICKY (crying): I just never realized how much
pain I have caused him. No wonder he doubts my love.
Scene 10
Characters: Jake & Chris,woman, and waiter
Setting: Sassy's
(Jake and Chris are walking in to the bar and walk to a table and
sit down.)
CHRIS: Jake please tell me we did not come here
for you to get drunk and start a fight.
JAKE: I am not going to start a fight. I just
can't sit at your place because all I do is think about Vicky. I
have to do something to quit thinking about her.
CHRIS: Well I think you would be better off
going and trying to straighten things out with her instead of
trying to forget her.
JAKE: Please, just be my friend and let's not
talk about Vicky anymore.
(A waiter walks over and sets a drink in front of Jake.)
JAKE: I didn't order that.
WAITER: It is from the lady sitting at the bar
(he points to her).
(Jake hesitates not really knowing what to do and Serena walks up
table.)
WOMAN: Hi guys.
JAKE: Uh Hi. (he accepts the drink)
CHRIS: Hi
WOMAN: My name is Serena. (she turns to Jake). I
just sent you that drink because you looked kind of sad and
thought it might cheer you up. Mind if I sit down?
JAKE: Suit yourself.
CHRIS (to Serena): Sorry my friend is really a
nice guy he is just under a little stress right now.
SERENA: That's okay, I have been there before. I
haven't seen you guys here before.
CHRIS: It has been a long while since we have
been here.
SERENA (looking at her watch): I have to get
going. It was nice meeting you guys.
(she walks away).
(Jake and Chris just shrug at each other as she walks off.)
