Part Ten
INT.BAY
CITY DAY CARE-DAY
The day care center is full of police officers, roaming around.
KAT is standing in a corner, her face streaked with tears, and
JAKE is attempting to comfort her. TONI is trying to question
her.
TONI
You didn't give Quint permission to take the baby?
KAT
NO! I would never give him permission to take her!
TONI
Does he have any sort of custody or visitation?
KAT
He has none. We were never married, there were never any
arrangements worked out. He has kidnapped my daughter and instead
of standing in here questioning me, you should be out there
looking for her!
The doors to the day care center open and VICKY runs in, followed
by NICK. Kat runs to Nick, who holds her tightly.
KAT
Nick, he's got her. He took her!
NICK
We'll find her, I promise. He won't get away with it.
Vicky rubs her hand on Kat's back.
VICKY
Everything will be all right, Kat...we'll get her back.
TONI
We've got the airport, the bus station, and the train station
blocked off. There's an officer at every major exit to any major
highway. He's not getting out of Bay City.
KAT
What if I never see my little girl again? Oh, God, what if I
never see her again?
JAKE
Don't you dare talk like that, Kat. I am telling you right now
that he's not getting far with her. Claire is going to be home
safe with her mommy, and her uncle Jake, and her Aunt Vicky, and
all of her cousins very, very soon.
Toni walks Vicky aside.
TONI
You might want to take her home. She's not going to be able to do
anything here and she might feel more comfortable in a familiar
setting.
VICKY
Toni...what are the chances of finding her?
TONI
(sighing)
I don't know, Vicky...child abduction is a very iffy thing,
especially if it's done by a parent. We just have to hope that
Quint's caught on his way out of town.
Vicky walks back over to Kat, Jake, and Nick.
VICKY
Why don't we go back to our house? You'll be able to get away
from this, Kat, from the press, from the police, and wait.
KAT
(shaking her head)
I'm not leaving...I can't leave...
NICK
I think it's a good idea, Kat...
KAT
(almost hysterical, but her voice is strangely calm)
What if she can't sleep? What if she's crying for her mommy and
he decides that he can't take the noise anymore? What if he puts
his hand over her mouth again...and this time, I'm not there to
stop him? What if---
VICKY
(interrupting)
Stop it, Kat...come on...we're going to take you home.
As they begin to walk towards the door, Kat's body goes limp and
she collapses to the floor.
FADE OUT
INT.BCUH EMERGENCY ROOM-SAME DAY
KAT is asleep on a hospital bed, an IV in her arm. JAKE sits next
to her, her hand in both of his. As he watches her, NICK walks
in.
NICK
She's asleep?
JAKE
Yeah. They said it's shock. Of course she's in shock, her ex just
stole her kid!
NICK
God, Jake, how did this happen? She was getting her life
together...and this happens? He finds her and steals the one
person she would die for?
JAKE
All I know is that if I ever find him...I'll break his neck with
my bare hands.
Kat begins to stir, and looks over at them.
KAT
(sleepily)
The baby?
JAKE
They're looking for her still, Kat.
KAT
(beginning to cry)
I'm sorry, Jake...I've been so much trouble to you since I've
been here...
JAKE
Sweetie, it's okay. You're in shock and you've had some
medication, which is why you feel so rotten.
KAT
But all I wanted was to live a normal life again...I didn't want
to be scared, I didn't want to be fearful. And now this has
happened.
JAKE
I've already called a friend of mine, Kat. He's a private
investigator and his name is Gary Sinclair. He's going to help
find Claire.
KAT
(whispering)
Thank you...thank you.
Jake stands up to leave.
JAKE
I'm going to go check on what's going on, but I'll be back, okay?
Kat nods, as he leaves. Nick sits down by Kat's bedside, and
strokes her hair.
NICK
I'm so sorry this has happened to you.
KAT
I know you are...I'm sorry you had to be a part of it.
NICK
I want to be a part of everything in your life, Kat...the good
and the bad things.
KAT
I don't know if I should be saying this, and I know it's not the
medication talking, Nick...but I'm falling in love with you.
NICK
I'm falling in love with you, too. (He bends over and kisses her
gently on the lips)
As they kiss, we:
FADE OUT
INT.HOSPITAL CHAPEL-SAME DAY
VICKY is kneeling in one of the pews, her hands folded. She is
silent, watching the altar. Jake comes up behind her, quietly,
and puts his hands on her shoulders. She turns around and gives
him a half smile.
VICKY
I know, I'm not exactly the praying type. But I needed to come in
here...for Kat.
JAKE
I was thinking the same thing.
He kneels next to her, ans they're both silent for a minute.
VICKY
(in a soft whisper)
Jake?
JAKE
What?
VICKY
I'm glad she's come back to us. And I'm glad she's a part of our
family.
JAKE
(nearly in tears)
So am I...so am I, Vick.
They're quiet again, both watching the altar.
FADE OUT
CUT TO:
INT.BAY CITY AIRPORT-SAME DAY
QUINT is standing in a small bookshop in the airport, CLAIRE in
his arms. As he moves out, a woman in her early to mid-twenties
walks up to him. Without a word, he hands Claire to her and she
walks away with the baby towards the departing flights. After
about five minutes, Quint follows her.
