Reincarnation, Part Four
INT.THE
HARBOR CLUB-DAY
DONNA is seated at the bar, looking over receipts. As she puts a
pile aside, she is tapped on the arm. She turns to see QUINT
standing behind her.
DONNA
Hello....Can I help you?
QUINT
I noticed in the paper that you're looking for an assistant
manager.
DONNA
And you're applying?
QUINT
I'd like to, yes. Is the job still available?
DONNA
It's open. What sort of prior experience do you have?
QUINT
Two years of management experience at a restaurant in
Philadelphia. Several years of waitstaff experience.
DONNA
So you're familiar with the restaurant business?
QUINT
More than familiar. My parents own a little mom-and-pop diner in
a small town, so my sisters and I have grown up in that
restaurant.
DONNA
Well, I guess before I hire you, I ought to find out your name.
QUINT
Rob. Robert McGill.
DONNA
Well, Robert McGill, it's nice to meet you.
Donna holds out her hand and Quint shakes it.
DONNA (cont'd)
I'm Donna Love, the owner of the Harbor Club. Why don't we
attempt a two week trial basis? See how you do.
QUINT
Fair enough. When do I start?
DONNA
Tomorrow morning, ten AM sharp.
QUINT
I'll see you tomorrow, then. Nine fifty-eight, sharp.
He walks through the front door. Donna watches him for a moment,
then goes back to her receipts.

Two weeks later
INT.KAT'S NEW APARTMENT-DAY
JAKE and NICK struggle to bring a couch into the living room of
KAT'S apartment. They set it down and Jake collapses on it in a
heap. Nick leans against
it as Vicky and Kat follow with Claire and several small boxes.
VICKY
Wimps.
NICK
Yeah,you're one to to talk.
VICKY
Oh, shut up. (She slaps him playfully on the arm) You two are
winded by a little sofa?
JAKE
Tell you what. Give me the baby and you two go get the rest of
the furniture.
VICKY
You wish. I'll treat you guys to dinner tonight, though.
KAT
Better yet, when I'm settled, I'll make dinner for you guys.
NICK
You cook better than my sister, right?
KAT
(Grinning)
I swear. I'll even let you choose the menu.
NICK
We can talk about that later.
Vicky and Jake exchange a sly look, which doesn't escape Kat's
notice. She shakes her head at Vicky, smiling shyly.
KAT
This place is great. How'd you find it?
JAKE
I used to live here. Actually, I never stopped the lease.
KAT
This looks like you, Jake....or at least what you used to be
like.
JAKE
But now I've changed for the better--
He grabs Vicky around the waist and kisses her. She squeals, and
he begins to tickle her.
KAT
I take that back, Jake. You haven't changed.
JAKE
All right, look, Squidgie, there's a large mud puddle in front of
the building. Feel up to a swim?
KAT
Your idle threats don't work on me, Jake, dear.
VICKY
All right, you guys. Let's get all this stuff in the house.
Jake and Nick leave again. As Vicky follows them, she notices Kat
hanging behind, lifting up a pile of envelopes.
VICKY (cont'd)
Kat? Are you coming?
KAT
Yeah....in a minute. I just wanted to open something first. This
is all my mail from Chicago....I got mail from the Lassiter Child
Protective Services.
VICKY
CPS? Why?
KAT
A few months ago, I sent them a letter requesting to have my file
sent to me....you know, once you turn eighteen, you're entitled
to all of your information.
And I haven't wanted it until now...until Claire, really.
VICKY
But now that you have a child, you want to know more about your
past?
KAT
Exactly. I want to be able to tell her where she came from.
VICKY
Have you opened the documents yet?
KAT
No....(she shakes her head)....I wanted to open them when I
wasn't alone. I don't know if I can handle it by myself. This
will tell me who my real parents
are....who I came from. Maybe why they gave me up.
VICKY
Or they could tell you nothing, sweetie. I wouldn't get your
hopes up too high.
KAT
I need to see WHAT they can tell me, though.
She opens the envelope, pulling out a sheaf of papers. There are
also two smaller envelopes that fall to the ground.
KAT
This is my birth certificate....my real one.
She looks at it, and suddenly, gasps. When she looks back at
Vicky, her eyes are full of tears.
VICKY
What, Kat? What does it say?
KAT
It can't be right.....maybe it's just a coincidence....this can't
be true....
She hands the paper to Vicky.
KAT
Read my given name and my natural parents' names.
VICKY
Your given name....Molly Jefferson McKinnon....McKinnon?
Mother....Laura Jefferson. Father....
Vicky stops, looking up and staring at Kat.
KAT
I know....it's impossible. It can't be.
VICKY
Oh, my God, Kat. We have to show this to Jake.
KAT
If this is right, Vicky....God, this means that Ray McKinnon was
my father. And Jake is my brother!
They stare at each other for a moment, and Vicky begins laughing,
but her laughter is mixed with tears. She grabs Kat in a hug,
Claire letting out a huge
protesting screech.
VICKY
If this is right, then Jake is going to be so thrilled!
JAKE
If what is right?
Both Kat and Vicky stare at Jake, who is in the doorway, a large
box in his arms. Vicky stands, realizing that Kat is too
terrified and shocked to say a word
to him.
VICKY
Jake....Kat just received all of her records from Lassiter CPS.
She just opened up her birth certificate.
JAKE
So what does it say? Why are the two of you so emotional over it?
VICKY
It's amazing. It's more than amazing, it's a miracle. I can't
believe this.
JAKE
(beginning to get agitated)
What, Vick? Would you please just tell me?
KAT
Jake, what was your father's name?
JAKE
Ray McKinnon. You knew that. Why?
KAT
Because that's the name of my natural father, too.
JAKE
Ray?
KAT
Not just Ray. Ray McKinnon. This is probably just a huge
coincidence, Jake, it's probably not the same person--
VICKY
I don't think it's a coincidence, Katie, and I think it's the
same person.
JAKE
Wait, what is it you're telling me? That my father, and your
father, are one and the same? That can't be, Katie.
VICKY
It can be, and I think it is, Jake. Look! (She shoves the birth
certificate into his hands.) Look at the name....Ray McKinnon.
JAKE
Oh, my God. You're right. Katie, I think this is true.
KAT
Jake, you don't have to....you don't have to act like you're
happy about this for my sake. Learning that you have a younger
sister that you didn't know about
can't be easy---
JAKE
Learning that YOU are my younger sister is something that I'm
more than happy to find out.....
He stops, obviously fighting emotion. Vicky puts a hand on his
shoulder.
KAT
There's so much I have to find out....who was my mother and how
did she and your---our---father meet? Why did she put me up for
adoption? Did she
know what happened, how my parents died, and how I went into
foster homes?
VICKY
We can find all that out later, Kat....
JAKE
We can find out everything. I promise. Right now, let's just let
this sink in, okay?
Kat nods, tears streaming down her face. Jake puts his arms
around her and hugs her, and Kat cries into his shoulder. Vicky
puts a hand on Kat's back
while she cries. Finally, she stops crying and looks at Jake.
KAT
I know I don't exactly seem like it now, but Jake, this is the
best news I could ever have found out. You've been like a brother
to me and to find out that you
really are my brother...I feel like I've found a missing piece in
my heart.
JAKE
Same here, Kat.
VICKY
You know, I always wondered about you too. No one could have that
same sick sense of humor and not be related.
KAT
Watch it, Vicky. Now that you're my sister-in-law, and married to
my big brother, I might have to have an attack of jealousy. (She
grins) But I doubt it.
She hugs Vicky tightly.
VICKY
Well, all of us being maudlin isn't exactly getting you moved in.
Let's get it done, and then tonight, we'll celebrate.
The three of them leave the apartment, arms around each other,
laughing.
