Part Six
INT.THE LUCKY LADY-NIGHT
SERGEI is singing on stage, surrounded by a bunch of teenage girls, including ALLI. NICK
and KAT are sitting at a table further back from the stage. As Sergei finishes his song,
they applaud.
KAT
Wow, he really IS good. I'm impressed.
NICK
The groupies are a nice touch. I wonder how much he's paying them.
KAT
(laughing)
You're really bad. They're teenagers. When I was that age, I went crazy over New Kids on
the Block.
NICK
(Standing up, jokingly)
Okay, I'm leaving. I can't deal with that.
KAT
Come on, I know you have a shameful celebrity crush in your past. Admit it.
NICK
Okay. Olivia Newton-John.
KAT
And you're making fun of ME?
They are silent for a minute and then Kat starts humming "Physical" under her
breath. Nick grabs her by the shoulders and they both start laughing. While they giggle,
ETTA MAE walks over.
ETTA MAE
That's what I like to see....people having fun in here.
NICK
Hi, Etta Mae. Have you met Kat?
ETTA MAE
I don't believe so. It's nice to meet you, Kat, I'm Etta Mae Burrell. This is my little
slice of heaven.
KAT
It's a lovely place. I'm Kathryn Daimler, just moved here from Chicago.
NICK
She's Jake's sister.
ETTA MAE
Oh, really? I didn't know Jake had a sister.
Nick and Kat exchange a sly look.
NICK
Neither did he.
KAT
(to Etta Mae's puzzled look)
Long story.
ETTA MAE
I'll leave you two alone now. If you need anything, let me know. And welcome to Bay City,
Kat.
KAT
(smiling)
Thanks.
Etta Mae walks off and Nick leans over to Kat.
NICK
Do you want to go for a walk? All of the flowers are blooming in the park and it's
gorgeous at night.
KAT
Sure, I'd like that.
They leave the Lucky Lady and we....
FADE OUT
CUT TO:
EXT.THE PARK-SAME NIGHT
NICK and KAT walk through the park, which has a few random couples scattered around. They
walk silently for a minute, then Nick speaks.
NICK
Can I ask you something? You don't have to answer if you don't want to.
KAT
Sure. There's not a whole lot you can say that I won't answer.
NICK
My sister told me a little of what happened back in Pennsylvania. She didn't tell me much,
just that you were in an abusive relationship.
KAT
Yeah. Not a very pleasant part of my life.
NICK
How'd you get the courage to leave?
KAT
It wasn't courage. It was survival. I had to leave or I thought he was going to kill me or
Claire.
NICK
Pretty brave to me. Not many people can do that, just pick up and move to a new city
without knowing anyone.
KAT
I won't even tell you how scared I was. It was an act of instinct, nothing else.
NICK
What made you think of trying to find Vicky and Jake?
KAT
I was in Chicago and you can't even imagine how lonely I was. I was scared that Quint
would find me, scared that he'd take Claire from me, just scared. And I found an old
letter that Vicky had sent, telling me about her life here, telling me how wonderful
things were, and I decided to visit. I was hoping some of that wonderful would rub off on
me.
NICK
And has it?
KAT
I'm beginning to think so.
They smile quietly at one another, and Nick leans closer to her. Their lips meet softly,
and Nick moves his hands up to touch Kat's face. As he pulls away, she reaches up and
traces his lips with her finger.
NICK
I think something wonderful came to Bay City a few weeks ago.
Suddenly, Kat pulls away, turning her back to Nick.
NICK (cont'd)
Kat? What's wrong?
KAT
I'm scared, Nick. I'm scared to get involved with you.
NICK
Why? Kat, I'm not like Quint. I would never hurt you.
KAT
I'm not afraid of you. Don't ever think that! (Tears well up in her eyes). I'm afraid of
hurting YOU! I'm afraid that my past is going to catch up, that Quint will come back, and
I don't want you to have to be a part of that. I don't want my past to touch right now. I
want to keep them two separate parts of my life.
NICK
I want to help you get over what happened, Kat. I want to help you let it go, I want you
to see that you deserve so much.
KAT
Maybe I'm not meant for happiness. And I'm not just saying that to be a martyr, I think
maybe it's true.
NICK
What do you feel when you hold that baby girl in your arms?
KAT
(slowly)
I don't know...love....protectiveness....
NICK
Happiness?
KAT
Yeah...I am happy when I hold her.
NICK
What did you feel when you found out about Jake?
KAT
Disbelief.
NICK
AFTER you realized it was true. Happiness, right?
KAT
(beginning to smile)
Well, yeah.
NICK
And what do you feel when I do this?
He leans over and kisses her again.
KAT
Happiness. Definitely happiness.
They grin at one another and Nick takes her hands in his.
NICK
Don't tell me you weren't meant to be happy. I think you're scared to LET yourself be
happy because you're afraid it will be taken away.
KAT
Well, maybe with your help, I can stop being afraid of happiness.
NICK
I'm counting on it.
He kisses her again, and we...
FADE OUT
CUT TO:
INT.KAT'S APARTMENT-NIGHT
NICK and KAT are standing in the doorway of the apartment, holding hands. The apartment is
semi-lit. They have just returned from Vicky and Jake's, where they picked up Claire.
NICK
I was planning on taking Vicky's boys to the carnival tomorrow afternoon. I thought Vicky
and Jake could use a little time alone. Do you want to bring Claire and go with us?
KAT
That sounds like fun. What time?
NICK
I'll come get the two of you around twelve? Sound okay?
KAT
Perfect. (She leans in closer to him) You know, Nick, I really had a great time tonight.
NICK
So did I. We'll have to do this again soon.
KAT
Very soon....
They kiss gently. As they separate, Nick smiles at her, then turns around and leaves. Kat
shuts the door behind him, leaning back on it, a huge grin on her face. She stands there,
silently for a minute.
KAT (to self)
If this is happiness, then I guess I do deserve it.
There is a knock on the door, and she jumps, startled.
KAT
Did you forget something, Nick?
She opens the door and her face drops in fear as she sees who is standing in front of her.
QUINT
Hi, Kathryn.
She tries to slam the door in his face, but he reaches out and holds it open. They stare
at each other, Quint in amusement, Kat in fear, as we....
