The Ties that Bind, Part 15

Scene 1
Setting: Derek is living in Jake's old penthouse. he's wearing jeans and a white t-shirt, he's unpacking, his arms are full of books when the doorbell rings.

Derek: Coming (he walks to the door, struggles to open it)Е..Oh, Hi..

Amanda: (looking at Derek, and realizing that this guy looks pretty good in jeans and a t-shirt). Еuh...Hi Derek.

Derek: (shocked to see that was Amanda at the door) How'd you know where I'm living?

Amanda: EasyЕЕ I asked Maria, can I help you with those? (she goes to take a few from his arms)

Derek: No, it's fine, I've got them (he turns around and knocks into a box and they all fall to the floor) Е.damn

Amanda can't help but notice, as she bends down to help him with the books, that he has this tatoo on his right bicep with the initials JRS and a heart around those initials.

Amanda: She must be pretty special..

Derek: Who?

Amanda: The one on your arm there..

Derek: (picking up the rest of the books and turning around, softly) Yes, she is very special.

Amanda: Who is she?

Derek: What did you come here for? More questions?

Amanda: (looking around) So you got Mckinnon's old place, did you? Maybe you can make it look not so much like a swinging bachelor's pad.

Derek: Amanda, you didn't come here to talk about Jake's place, why did you come??

Amanda: Well, IЕ uhЕ I realized that you forgot those papers you were going to look at and I just wanted to bring them by.

Derek: (smiling) Oh, really nowЕ

Amanda: (looking around the room but not at Derek) ЕЕ and I wanted to apologize for teasing you this afternoon.

Derek: (picking up the rest of the books and setting them down) You? Apologize? That must be difficult for you, Red.

Amanda: Now, if were going to start that all over again then I'll just leave! You know, I was just trying to be nice! (she turns around to leave)

Derek:Е. Oh, alright, I just don't like being backed into a corner, so if your going to dish it then you better learn to take it.

Amanda: Oh, I can take it, I can take more than you can dishЕ.

The doorbell rings, Derek goes to open the door.

Delivery guy: Order for Summerfield?

Derek: Yes

Delivery guy: $15.95, please.

Derek: (digs into his jeans and pulls out a $20.00) Here you go, keep the change. (holding up the pizza) Why don't you join me, if you don't mind the mess and (with a smile) we can talk about calling a truce Е.Е.Red!

Scene 2
Setting: We pan into the apartment in New York city. The music in the background is a Dave Matthews song called, "Say Good-bye" but we hear the lyrics singing

Jake moved over to a sofa chair to watch Vicky sleep. She had a restless night; she was calling his name in her sleep and he watched her until the wee hours of the morning and finally falling asleep in his chair.

Vicky wakes up, turns over, and looks around the room and sees Jake sleeping in his chair. She slowly smiles, gets out of bed and walks over to Jake.

Vicky: (kneeling down beside Jake and looks at him for a moment) Oh, Jake. (she runs her fingers across his face, whispering) I love you, Mckinnon. I just need to show you just how much! (she leans in closer and softly kisses him on the lips, he smiles) You remember, don't you? (she kisses him again, he kisses her back as he starts to wake up, then realizes it's Vicky)

Jake: (quietly) What are you doing Vicky?

Vicky: Sshhh (kissing him again) can't you tell, MckinnonЕ (she kisses him on the lips then moves down to his cheek then his neck)

Jake: (in her ear)Е.Tell meЕ.. is that how you kissedЕ.. Shane?

Vicky: (stopping dead in her tracks, she leans back and slaps Jake right across the face) How could you?! (she steps back) That's cold, Jake, coldЕ

Jake: (rubbing his face) what? do you think, I'm gonna forget what you did with Shane with just a few of your kisses?

Vicky: Okay, I'm gonna say it one more time . . . I did not sleep with Shane, I couldn't, wouldn't, and didn't.

Jake: You'll have a hard time convincing me of that!

Vicky: You know what?? this is all your fault!

Jake: (a look of disbelief on his face) What?? I can't believe you're saying that to me.

Vicky: You know why?

Jake: (throwing his hands in the air) ЕOh, do tell!

Vicky: It all started when you promised to look out for me after Ryan died, you're the one that made me love you!

Jake: Oh, made youЕ. love me, so I'm right I forced you into this, didn't I?

Vicky: Yep, you know how?ЕЕЕЕ(her voice getting soft, looking Jake directly in the eyes) Е.. by being there for me, all those times when I needed you even when I told you to go away, get lostЕyou wouldn't. By taking my kids and making them your own. By putting your life on hold for me, by looking out for me. And most of allЕЕ by loving me even when I did something stupid! You've never stopped loving meЕЕ and even though you do not believe meЕ. I have never, ever stopped loving you. I love you more now than I have ever in my life, JakeЕ.. ever in my life!

Jake: (standing up ) You only want me now because there's no one else better that has come alongЕ.. whatЕ.what if Ryan walked through that door, what would you do?? Huh? tell me, what would you do?

Vicky: (shocked) That's not fair, Jake, and you know it!

Jake: Sometimes Vicky you can't always have everything you want, you just can't!

Vicky: (angrily) I don't want everything,Е I just want youЕ..

Just then the doorbell rings..

Jake: I'd better get that.. (he puts on a robe and heads for the front door)

Vicky: (sarcastically) Yeah, you'd better get that. Who knows who that could be? It just might be Bridget!

Scene 3
Setting: Derek and Amanda are sitting on the couch finishing off the last of the pizza.

Amanda: So, let's talk about that truce now, shall we??

Derek: Well, if you stop digging around in my life, I'll stop calling you Red, how's that sound?

Amanda: (thinking for a moment) Well, it doesn't seem like I get much out of the deal, but if you allow me to ask 3 more questions about you, and you have to answer them, then I will make the deal.

Derek: (thinking to himself, what damage could 3 questions do) hmmmmЕ3 questions you say, and if I answer all 3 of them, then you will stopЕ right?

Amanda: Count on it! ButЕЕ you have to answer them honestly!

Derek: And I haven't been honest with you so far?

Amanda: I wouldn't say dishonest, but I would say you have been a little evasive.

Derek: They say mystery is good for the soul, you know?

Amanda: Well, I just like to know who I'm working with.

Derek: (with a smile) and do you grill all your co-workers like this?

Amanda: So what is it gonna be?   Are you going to answer or what?

Derek: Alright, alright, you can askЕ.

Amanda: Okay, question #1.   How old are you??

Derek: Old enough too know better!

Amanda: Honesty, remember???

Derek: Yeah, yeah, I remember! Okay, I'm 29 yrs old, but feel like I've lived a life of a 50 year old. .. Okay, you got two more left, shoot!

Amanda looks around the penthouse. She sees that he has a picture on the mantle piece, it's of him and a woman and they look like they are in some foreign country. He has his arm around her and she's carrying a photographer's camera and He's dressed in some kinda Khaki outfit, like those foreign correspondents wear.

Amanda: Who's that woman with you in that picture?

Derek: (he gets up off the couch and walks over to the picture, quietly he says) that wasЕЕ my wifeЕ

Amanda: Oh really, and where is she? How come she isn't here with you???

Derek: (turning away from Amanda) She's dead.

Amanda: (getting up and going over to him, she puts her hand on his shoulder and looks at the picture too) I'm so sorry, DerekЕ.. she was a beautiful woman.

Derek: (looking at Amanda) yes, yes, she wasЕ. both inside and out..

Amanda: (softly) Е What was her name?

Derek: Her name was Kerry (putting the picture down, clearing his throat) Can I get you something to drink, how about some coffee? (he turns and heads for the kitchen)

Amanda: (realizing that Derek didn't want to talk about this) Oh, sure, sure that sounds good. (then after he's out of the room) but that doesn't explain the JRS tatoo on his armЕ..

Scene 3
Setting: Mustang Sally's

Nicole is in her office at the filing cabinet. Her back is to the door. She's jamming out to some music that she has on, kinda dancing and singing along. She can't see or hear the man that has just entered and is standing at the door looking at her, he stands about 6' has dark blonde hair and a little dent in his chin.

Nicole is singing to herself the new song with Carlos Santana and the lead singer from Matchbox 20..Е"give me your heart or just forget about it.. or just forget about, give me your heart, make it real or just forget about it. Or just forget about it.

Jax: (he's laughing as he's seeing her singing) Е Excuse me, Excuse meЕEXCUSE ME!!!!

Nicole: (turning around and realizing that he is there) what?? what???

Jax: (over the music) why don't you turn that down????

Nicole: What?? I cant hear you??

Jax: Why don't you turn (she turns the music off and he's yelling) TURN THAT DOWN!!!Е.

Nicole: Hey, no need to yell there, buddy..

Jax: I'm sorry I hated to bother you cause you look like you were really enjoying that music there.. but are you Nicole? I was told I would find you back here.

Nicole: (smiling a bit and a little embarrassed) why, yes, I am, who's asking?

Jax: Well, my name is Jack Turner, but you can just call me Jax.

Nicole: Well, Jax, sit down, what can I do for you?

Jax: Well, my cousin, Jake Mckinnon called me last night asking me if I would like to come into the city for a while and help him out with some things. He told me to come and see you.

Nicole: He did, did he? Good ol' Jake, thinking ahead of the game. Hmmmm, and what did he say I would tell you to do.

Jax: (laughing) well, he said first of all to ignore any attitude that you may give me because you were all bark and no bite!

Nicole: we'll see about thatЕ. and have you seen your cousin for a while?

Jax: No, I haven't seen him for a few years, I heard that he finally married Vicky though. That was about time, I'd say.

Nicole: I guess he hasn't told you yet then?

Jax: Oh, no, what now? Another fight between the two of them? Another knock down, I hate you, always have, always will. fight? That was just it with the two of those two, could never see a good thing looking them right in the face.

Nicole: hmmm, it seems you have some experience with them, do you?

Jax: (laughing) With Jake and Vicky, it's always one big roller coaster ride, you hate it when your on it but as soon as you get off you want to go back again!

Nicole: (laughing) It sounds like you have been on a few of those roller coaster rides yourself?

Jax: Hmmm, getting personal already? I like that. Jake did say you weren't one to beat around the bush!

Nicole: Life is to short, my friend, way to short to beat around the bush. By time you get around it, what your chasing may already be gone!

Scene 4
Setting: Apartment New York City,

Jake: (swinging open the door) : What!

Nick: That's a nice good morning for you!

Jake: (surprised) I'm sorry, Nick, what are you doing here? what's wrong? Is Kirkland alright???

Nick: Well, can we at least come in??

Jake: Oh, I'm sorry, Hi Linda, come on in pleaseЕ

Linda: Hi Jake, you look like Hell..

Jake: Thanks, I feel like it, too..

(Nick and Linda walk in, Linda puts down the package that she is carrying for Derek)

Jake: Ok, what's going on?

Nick: Donna asked me to come and get Stephen and take him home..

Jake: What? Why? He can go home with Vicky when she leaves..

Vicky: (walking into the room dressed, firmly she says) I'm not going home yet. Hi Nick.

Jake: What????

Nick: Vicky.

Linda: Hi Vicky, I'm Linda, I work with Derek.

Vicky: Hi, I'm Jake's wifeЕЕum...Nick, can I talk to you for a few minutes?

Nick: (uncomfortable) I guess..

Jake: Excuse me, while I go and change..

Nick: Listen Vicky, I'm still having a hard time dealing with what you have done, so you are not one of my favorite people right now and I'm only doing this for Donna.

Vicky: Nick, I know you're angry and mad at me right now, and you have every right to be. I just want to thank you for taking Stephen home and I intend to be home with Jake in a little while.

Nick: He doesn't seem to think that way.

Vicky: He will, I just need to some time to convince him is all.

Nick: I hope so because those boys need him, and as much as I hate what you did, I think you need Jake as well.

Vicky: Oh, Nick, I know how hard this has been for you, and I thank you again for this.

Nick: Well, where is Stephen?

Vicky: He stayed with an old friend of mine last night, Kris. I will give her a call and see when she is going to bring him back.

Nick: Well, our flight doesn't leave until tonight so would you mind if Linda and I take in some of the city before we pickup Steven and head back?

Vicky: Not at all, it will give me a chance to talk with Stephen first.

Jake: (walking back in after changing, into jeans) Vick, you and I need to talk..

Vicky: Oh, now you want to talk? Well, I cant right now because I have to call Kris!

Nick: Come on, Linda, let's go get some breakfast and see the sightsЕ

Linda: Excuse me, but before we leave, Jake, I have something for you from Derek?

Jake: I'm sorry, Linda, what is it?

Linda (picking up the picture): Here it is, Derek said this is something that you have wanted for a long time and he finally was able to obtain it for you.

Vicky: What is it?

Linda: Well, I think it's a portrait..

Nick: Ready, Linda? Vicky, we'll be back later. Jake, we'll see you later.. (they leave)

Jake takes the picture and sits down on the couch. He takes the wrapping off the picture.   it's a portrait of a set of swings and a little girl in a swing and a boy behind her pushing it. It's titled, "Friendship Forever."

Vicky: (sitting next to him on the couch) What is it? .ЕЕ.(catching her breath)ЕOhЕ JakeЕ that's usЕ that is beautiful..

Jake: (softly)Е.IЕuhЕ I forgot about this. (he runs his hand across the swings)

Vicky: (she puts her hand on top of his and he runs it across the swings and the little girl's hair) That's us, you knowЕ.. (turning to look at Jake) Е..that's us foreverЕyou and me.
