The Ties that Bind, Part 19

Scene 1

Katia as attempted to rattle Amanda by accusing Derek of killing his wife.

Katia: I see from the look on your face, our little friend failed to mention that little bit about his colorful past.

Amanda:  (composing herself)  I don't know who you are, but I have a feeling that you are no friend of Derek's

Katia: I never said I was a friend, you just assumed that I was.

Maria:  (walking in)  Excuse Miss Cory did you want a cup of coffee as well?

Amanda: No, thank you, Maria and you needn't bring one for her either, she wont be staying long. (Maria turns away with a little smile on her face)

Amanda: (getting a little irritated) So what exactly is it you want?

Katia: (leaning across the desk)  Oh, I just wanted to warn you about who you may be getting involved with, let's just say it's a little friendly advice.

Amanda:  (leaning across her desk as well)  Well, if I needed a little friendly advice, as you say, I would have written Ann Landers so you can take your…

Patti: (walking through the door) You again!  Amanda, is she bothering you?

Katia: Patzzi, old friend, we meet again, tell me how long has it been….. deerie..

Patti:  (rolling her eyes)  Don't call me deerie, and I think it's time for you to leave.

Katia:  (ignoring her)  And how's that husband of yours doing?   Ever come home, did he?

Patti: Now, now, Katia, it's not nice to be jealous of someone else's man now, is it?

Amanda: Okay, hold on here, I can see that you know this woman, Patti, and apparently so does Derek, would someone mind filling me in???

Katia:  (getting up) Well, I must leave now, I'll let Patz here fill you in, now Patz, deerie, don't forget to leave out the good parts, like …..murder! (she walks out the door) Ta, for now girls…

Patti: (watching as she walks out that door)  Nothing but trouble does she cause where ever she goes, but one day she'll get her's!  (Patti starts to walk out but stops as she hears Amanda.)

Amanda: Hold on there, I don't think you're going anywhere…

Patti: I've got to get to that assignment.

Amanda: That can wait, she comes in here and drops a bombshell and I want to know what she means, so you sit yourself down and you're going to tell me who she is and what she meant…

Scene 2

Nick and Linda came back to the apartment to pick up Steven to take him back to Bay City. Vicky tried to put on her best face and told Steven that she would be home in a few days.   She was going to bring Jake back with her and not to worry, that things were going to be all right.

After they left, Vicky wandered around the room, stops and looks at the painting of a boy and girl on a set of swings. We see her flashback to when Jake proposed to her the first time at the swings in Lassiter, how he danced with her and then got on his knee to ask her. ……"You fool, why didn't you know then, why didn't you know then that Jake was the man you wanted, all the pain you could have stopped from happening" She's brought back to reality by a knock on the door.  She heads to the door as she wipes the tears from her eye and attempts to gather herself.

Kris, who has come to see if Jake by chance came back and to see if Vicky was okay.

Vicky: (opening the door) Oh, Hi Kris (still trying to compose herself.)

Kris: (seeing Vicky almost in tears, goes to give her a hug) Oh, Vicky, come here….Come on now, this will work out.  I know you two.  I've seen you two argue before and I know that you guys will get past this, come on, let's sit down and talk about this, okay?

Vicky: Is Jake with you?  (she asks anxiously)

Kris: No, honey, I'm sorry, he's not. He left pretty much after you and Steven left. (trying to sound positive) but I'm sure he'll be back soon.

Vicky: I doubt that, Kris, I was beginning to think that, too, but it's different this time. You know…. had I said yes the first time that Jake asked me we probably wouldn't be in this mess.

Kris: What do you mean the first time he asked you?

Vicky: Oh, I was such a fool, Kris!  Do you remember me telling you about Ryan and losing Ryan.

Kris: Yes, of course, and how Jake was there for you through all of that.

Vicky: When I look back at it now, I see . . . I see when Jake dropped everything for me, he put his whole life on hold, he took care of my boys for me. He brought me back to life again, but no matter what he did, I had to march right ahead and fall for Shane and hurt Jake time after time, when he asked me to marry him I told him I wasn't ready, if I had only been ready.

Kris: And what, Vicky?  Marry him when you couldn't commit to him freely?  Now that would truly be hurting him wouldn't it? You waited until you were ready, till the time was right. Vicky, Jake has always been in love with you, ever since I can remember you know when I was young sometimes when Jake would read to me at night, when he thought I was asleep. He would tell me about you and him and what kind of life you guys were going to have and how he was going to always, always take care of you.

Vicky: And he has Kris, he has always taken care of me and had I not run away from those feelings for Jake at that time none of this would have happened.

Kris: Vicky, listen to me…As hard has you try, you can't change the past, the only thing you can do is change right now at this moment.

Vicky: I can't change Jake's feelings right now, can I?

Kris: No, you can't…. but tell me, didn't Jake wait patiently for you?

Vicky: (remembering Jake and her on the steps coming back from Lassiter and him showing her the key around his neck)  He told me he had the key to my heart and that one day I would come to him.

Kris: And just like you came to him, he will come back to you, Vicky, you just have to be patient.

Vicky: Patient, you know that is not my strong point (looking at the clock) …I wonder where he is, I bet he's at that Sally's.  Come on, let's go and see if he is there…

Kris: But I thought you were going to wait for him..

Vicky: I am going to wait, I'll wait forever…. but who says I can't wait and watch for him at Sally's..

Scene 3

Nick and Linda are at the airport waiting for their flight to Bay City.  Steven is sitting between them, he hasn't said much since they left Vicky at the apartment.

Linda: Steven, are you sure you don't want anything to eat?

Steven: No, thanks, I'm not hungry.

Nick: Come on, kiddo, you must be hungry by now..

Steven: I'm not, thanks.

Both Nick and Linda look at each other not sure what to say or do to make Steven feel better.

Linda: You know, Steven, when I was a little girl by Mom would always tell me that sometimes you go through bad times so you'll know just what the good times really are about.

Steven: Yeah, I feel like I've seen enough bad times to last me forever.   First Ryan, and now Jake. Me? I'm never getting married.

Linda: (looking up a Nick, then back to Steven): Oh, come on now, you don't mean that.  One day you're gonna find that girl who's gonna make your heart just stop.  You watch me that I'm not right on this.

Nick: (looking at Linda and smiling)  You know, Steven, Linda is right, you never know what's going to happen.  Sometimes things may look bleak and then someone comes into your life and all of a sudden things change and are sunny again. You just can't give up hope, you just can't..

Scene 4
Mustang Sally's

Sally is sitting at a table reading, the band is on stage rehearsing, Nicky comes up and sits down.

Nicky: Whew! (as she throws a towel over her shoulder) That was a tough one.

Sally: (looking up from her reading)  What?  Another new recipe that you're trying out?

Nicky: You don't know how critical it can be when your oven is not hot enough and then you get by on ingredients that are not up to the standards of my cooking!

Sally: Now, Nicky, those are the same supplies we get all the time.   You're just mad that Shari keeps trying to give you pointers in your kitchen

Nicky: Well it's her job to stay behind the bar! And as I understand it, it's my job to be the chef! You don't see me behind the bar giving her tips on how to mix drinks.

Sally: All right, I'll talk to her again if you like….

Nicky: Thank you, all I ask is that she stay out of my kitchen and let me do the cooking……(changing her tone to one of inquisitiveness)…so, umm, how are you and Tom?

Sally: (taking off her reading glasses) What?

Nicky: Tom, you…you Tom…. you know the two of you together?

Sally: (flustered)  I know who you're talking about! What? Did it make the front page?  Oh, I know, Anne's been in your kitchen spilling the beans.

Nicky: Apparently, there isn't much going on, since you're not talking to him, is there? Now if you would get your head out of those books and look at what's standing in front of you!

Sally: Nicky, I don't tell you how to run your kitchen, do I? Well, then, don't tell me how I should run my life.

Nicky: Hey now, no need to get your knickers twisted, I was just trying to help!

Sally:  (gathering her stuff and beginning to walk off, but she stops and turns around to Nicky) Oh, and if something does happen to change between Tom and myself, I will be sure to let Anne know so she can keep your posted!

Anne and Shari coming walking up to Nicky after Sally has left, both of them have a smile on there faces, sitting down at the table.

Anne: So, come on, what'd she do, huh?  Tell us.

Shari: Come on, Nicky, tell….What did you say to her??

Nicky: Whoa, now, I (innocently) only asked what was up with her and Tom…

Both Anne and Shari look at each other and begin to giggle, Nicole is walking past and stops..

Nicole: You know, guys, I never like seeing the three of you together, it always spells trouble.  Tell me, who is the center of your attention now? Who's life are you going to save, who are you going to give your well meaning advice to, come on who is it?

Anne, Shari, Nicky: ( try to look innocent…all say in unison) Who? Us?

Nicole: Yeah, right! Oh, girls, you are too easy to read (she looks over to the bar as she hears someone slamming things around and it's Sally)…..Oh, I know, hmmm, let me guess, could it be Sally, that you're TRYING to help?

Anne: Oh, come on, Nicole!  There is nothing else to do around here.   We just want to see some people happy.  We are only trying to help her along a little.

Shari: That's right Anne, everyone needs a little push now and then.

Nicole: Little push, you say?  You're down right dragging her there!   Now, come on, girls, ease up a little.

Anne: Speaking of? Where's your buddy Jax?

Nicole: We weren't speaking of….and he's not my buddy. Just an FYI, he's no longer here. He had to go back, some crisis or another..

Anne: That's too bad, he was a cutie, if I ever saw one.

Nicole: (rolling her eyes)…. You guys are hopeless..

Scene 5

New York. Seedy Bar.

Jake and Robin have been siting at the bar for over an hour, each lost in thier own thoughts. Jake is  thinking about Vicky and Steven leaving. Robin looks over at Jake and thinks to herself,  'Now, here is a man who looks like he's lost his whole world.'

Bartender: (walking up)  Can I get you another one?

Robin: Jake?

Jake: (not hearing the bartender's question, he is in his own thoughts, as he says to no one in particular) It's funny, isn't it?

Robin: What? (she waves the bartender off)

Jake: The way your life turns out..

Robin: Yeah, usually not how you dreamed it would be is it?

Jake: (in a soft voice) Mine did, the life I dreamed came true……for awhile at least..….

Robin: Is that why your in here, trying to remember?

Jake: (looking at Robin)  Trying to forget.

Robin: (taking a sip of her drink) Dreams like that you can't forget

Jake:  (stops to look at Robin, noticing her for the first time, she was a beauty all right but if you looked at her, really looked at her, you could see in her eyes a deep sadness that was there.) Robin, right? What are you doing in a place like this?

Robin: (pausing for a moment and then finally saying)  Just like you, Jake ….trying to forget the past, drink away the pain, you know, do whatever it takes not to remember.

Jake: It's the remembering that kills you, doesn't it?

Robin: (sarcastic laugh) Gets me everytime…(lifting up her glass) I know this won't help with those memories, but what else can one do, at least it dulls the pain for awhile.

Jake: And what memories are you trying to wash away?

Robin: Do ya really wanna know?

Jake: Sure, I do, it certainly couldn't top mine, I bet.

Robin:  Oh yeah, I bet my sad story can top yours…how about having your husband leave you for another women when I lost our first child and found out I couldn't have any more children.

Jake: I'm sorry, Robin, he sounds like a real …

Robin: (puts her hand up) Don't….don't say it.. he wasn't a jerk, he loved me with all his heart, but it was me……. I pushed him away and told him I didn't want him! I couldn't stand to see the look in his eyes every day knowing that he wanted children and I couldn't give them to him (she gulps the rest of her drink down, regretting that she said too much, she changes the subject)  And you, Jake, what's your story?

Jake: (in a sarcastic voice)  How about the love of my life sleeps with another man and I find out in a courtroom full of people that she had been lying to me for months.

Robin: (surprised) Yep, that's a good one as well, good enough reason to be here, so here we are both feeling sorry for ourselves trying to forget

Jake: (he lifts up his glass as well) Well, here's to trying to dull the pain!  (Realizing that he has to meet Emily at Sally's, Jake gets up to leave) "I'd better get going, I have an appointment to get to.

Robin: Jake, you don't look in good enough condition to go to your appointment, do you have a car?

Jake: No, I can take a cab, I'll be alright …thanks though…

Robin: At least let me help you to your appointment, I've got nothing to do and besides I'm afraid I'm not going to get out of this bar without being hassled again.

Jake: Well, I know of a better bar than this and you wont be bothered, if you don't mind?

Robin: Not at all, us pity cases better stick together..

Mustang Sally's, Tom is sitting in a chair tuning his guitar as Sally's walks up.

Sally: What do you think your doing?

Tom: Well, Hi there, yourself beautiful…

Sally: I know what you're up to and I just want it to stop right now!

Tom: Up to what? I'm not up to anything, what are you talking about?

Sally: Don't try to deny it, I know you think involving Nicky and the rest of the girls are going to help me change my mind… well, I tell you it's not working!

Tom: (putting the guitar aside and standing up)  Whoa, now…. what are you saying that I need to enlist help where you're concerned?

Sally: I'm just saying this isnt high school and running to tell your friends to talk to me isn't going to work….

Tom: (standing closer to her)  High school? You think I'm playing some high school game here?

Sally: (getting uncomfortable because Tom is standing so close to her.   She tries to hold her ground) I'm …all I'm saying is….  (She never gets the chance to finish that statement because before she realizes it Tom has taken her face in his hands, he leans in closer and whispers) High school, hmmm . . .  (he lightly kisses her lips once, leans back and looks at her and then bends down again and kisses her like it was going to be the last time. After what seemed like an eternity he steps back and says)  Do you think that was some high school kiss?  (Sally obviously breathless and flustered as to what just happened just looks at Tom unable to say anything except…."what?"

Tom: You and I both know it goes deeper than that.  (with those words and leaving Sally still not quite sure what just happened, Tom walks off.)

Derek and Chris are walking back into the newsroom just coming back from an interview with Grant the mayor.

Chris: He certainly can unload it, can't he?

Derek: And he's the Mayor?

Chris: Yep, our good upstanding Mayor, who has tried to ruin just about everyone's life in Bay City.

Maria: (walking up to Derek and Chris)  Derek, Patti wants you to call her when you got back in, she said it was urgent!

Derek: Oh really, and where is she?

Maria: She had to go and take pictures of the big accident on the highway…

Amanda: (interrupting them) Chris, Derek, did you get that interview with the Mayor?

Derek: (forgetting that he needed to contact Patti) Yes, we did, very interesting man I'd say…

Amanda: Why don't you and I have a working dinner, Derek, and we can talk about how were going to handle his budget recommendations for the county…

Derek: (surprised that Amanda is asking him out)  Okay, sure, lets go…

Maria: (as they turn to head out)  But Derek, Patti says it was important…(Derek hasn't heard Maria, him and Amanda are busily talking about the interview with Grant.)

Chris: Come on, love lady, let's see what new mail we have….(as he gently grabs Maria's arm)

Maria: But Chris Patti says it was Urgent….

Chris: I'm sure it can wait until tomorrow.  Come on, let's get to reading those letters..

Scene 8

Jake and Robin made it to Sally's, so did Vicky and Kris. Vicky saw that Jake came in with Robin and she wanted to march herself right up there but Kris held her back and kept saying the word "Patience" to her.   Easy Street is playing on stage, Jake is sitting at the bar again, he's leaning back against the bar listening to the band waiting for Anne to hit the stage, meanwhile Anne talked to the group Easy Street and requested that they play this song, the 3 back up singers, Sydney, Steph and Lauren are all looking at Jake when they sing the chorus.. Vicky is sitting at a table across the room, looking at Jake. Jake knows that Vicky is there but he is trying to ignore her. Vicky on the other hand can only see Jake.

Chorus.
If you give her one, one more chance
that's all she needs is one more chance

Just let me prove that my love is real
baby wont you let me show you how I feel

Chorus.
all she wants is one, one more chance
thats all she needs to make things right

Why can't you see that my love is true
can't you see that I'm still in love with you
I don't care whats in the past
its all over
I don't care what people say,
I know that your the one…

Chorus.
If you give her one, one more chance
that's all she needs is one more chance

During the middle of this song, Jake can hear the words so he sneaks a pick over at Vicky, she's looking right at him, trying to melt him with that smile, their eyes lock for a moment. Vicky smiles at Jake…a smile starts to creep across his face….

Anne: Jake? (tapping him on the shoulder)

Jake: (trying to pull his eye's off Vicky) Huh? (turning to face Anne) Oh, hi there..

Anne: That must be Vicky, musn't it? (looking over at Vicky, who now has a frown on her face because she doesn't know who this woman is either!)

Jake: How'd you know that!

Anne: Oh…. just the fact you cant keep your eyes off her, and the fact that she is throwing daggers my way because I'm talking to you….why don't you go over there?

Jake: (rolling his eyes) Oh no, not again….. (feeling his back) what is it, do I have a sign on my back that says 'pick on Jake' everytime I come in here?

Anne: (laughing) Oh Jake, I may be young but I know what real love is when I see it, and that over there (pointing to Vicky) is real love.

Jake: You don't know the whole story.

Anne: Don't forget, Steven told us quite a bit, so I know, Mister…….. I know.

Jake: And what exactly is it that you know? Real love?….. Take my advice, real love is not worth the hassle.

Anne: (laughing)

Jake: What? what are you laughing at?

Anne: (patting him on the shoulder) Oh Jake, you know it is, otherwise you wouldn't be staring at real love sitting over there,……….. I'm on in a few. (walking off and giggling to herself) hassle, oh please….

Scene 9

Nick and Linda are at the cottage, just getting back from New York with Steven. They are standing at the door with Donna.

Donna: Thank you, darling, for bringing Steven back home.

Nick: Well, he didn't want to come home, he wanted to stay with Jake.

Donna: Kirkland needs him here, he's his big brother..

Nick: I'll come by tomorrow and pick the boys up and we can go to the park or something.

Donna: that would be great, and thank you, too, Linda… I wish we could have meet under different circumstances…

Linda: That's alright, Ms Love…

Donna: Oh, please, call me Donna..

Linda: Donna, then… I was glad I was able to help..

Nick
: I'll call you tomorrow, Donna..

Donna: Goodnight, you two.. (she closes the door, both Nick and Linda turn and start to walk down the steps they get to the bottom)

Nick: You think Steven and Kirkland are going to be alright?

Linda: With an uncle like you Nick, I'm sure of it…

Nick: (sitting down on the steps) You know, I never had a family until I moved here to find my real dad

Linda: (sitting down next to Nick) really? So you never had any brothers or sisters?

Nick: (putting his elbows on his knees) Nope, not until I came here did I find out that I had this big old family and you know, as angry as I am at Vicky for what she did, I still love her and don't want to see her hurt.

Linda: (following Nicks example, she does the same, she puts her elbows on her knees) Vicky needs you now Nick, now more than ever, she needs her brother to help her with her kids.

Nick: (turning to face her) You're right, Vicky is my family and I've got to help her through this, she would do the same for me. (Looking into Linda's eyes, Nick is drawn into her beauty, her mouth which seems to so easily turn into a smile, not thinking what he is doing he leans in and softly brushes her lips with his)

Linda: (surprised and her face blushing, Linda leans back) What? what was that for?

Nick: Thank you.

Linda: Thank you? Most people send cards, or shake your hand when they say Thank you.

Nick: I like to be different…..

Linda: That you are, Nick, that you are…

Nick: Come on, I'd better get you home. Work, bright and early tomorrow? (he gets up and holds out his hand, Linda looks down at his hand and then up to Nick, smiles and offers her hand, he takes her hand in his and they turn to head home)

Donna: (who has seen this all take place) Nick, honey, I hope you know what you're doing……so soon after Sophia.
