The Ties that Bind, Part 3
Scene 10
Setting: Apartment in New York: Jake has drinked himself to sleep, he's laying on the
couch with the bottle half empty in his hand, he's been in the same shirt for 2 days he
has a slight growth of beard, and he looks like he hasn't slept for days. On the table is
a picture of him and Vicky from their wedding that he has taken out of his wallet.
(Vicky is standing outside the front door, she slowly tries the door and it opens, she
peeks her head in)
Vicky: (in a whisper) Jake?…are you here? (she steps in and closes
the door behind her, she sees the sign that says Jake & Vicky Steven and Kirklands
Place, the balloons, flowers, bottles of champagne, she puts her hand on her chest and
takes a deep breath) Ooh, Jake, you thought of everything, it's beautiful. (She looks
around and sees Jake on the couch)
I guess you are here, well now
that I found you I'm not letting you walk out again, (she walks over to him and kneels on
the floor next to him, she takes the bottle out of his hands and sets it on the table, she
then runs her hand through his hair, down his face, she kisses her fingers and places them
on the bruises on his face, (he smiles in his sleep) and she says…there, all better………oh,
if I could only heal your heart as fast Jake, but I will…..…. you watch me,
Mckinnon.
Jake (stirs and says): Vick, Vick.
Vicky: I'm right here……….. Right here, where I will always
be. Let's get you to bed, you look in bad shape mister. (She helps him up and heads to the
bedroom)
Jake (groggily
says breathing right in her face): hey baby, what are you doing here?
Vicky: (turning her head the other way) whew…right now, trying to
get you to bed.
Jake: I like that idea (still thinking he's dreaming)
(Vicky gets him to the edge of the bed, he drops on to the bed, she picks up his feet and
removes his shoes. Jake starts to giggle)
Jake: stop it, that tickles.. (Jake starts moving his foot around, Vicky
has to hold his foot down to get his shoes off)
Vicky: Come on, Mckinnon, stop fighting me. (She finally gets his shoes
off, she stands over him) and says: You are going to have one hell of a headache when you
wake up mister and madder than a hen when you find me here. (she turns to walk away and
Jake reaches up and grabs her)
Jake: Where do you think your going lady? (he grabs her and brings her to
him on the bed, Vicky lets out a little scream) Come here….
Vicky: Jake! (she smiles, as she lays with his arms wrapped around her)
Jake, you don't know what you're doing. Jake? Jake? (she looks around and he's asleep With
his head on her shoulder, she smiles and says) Jake, as least I have you with me for now.
(she snuggles next to him and closes her eyes)
Scene 11
Setting: The apartment in New York -early next morning
(Jake opens his eyes half awake, Vicky is still in is arms, he smells her hair and smiles)
Jake: hmmmmm, nice………(he snuggles his face on her neck,
his eyes shoot wide open) What! (he then fully wakes up and realizes that Vicky is really
there with him, he lets go of her) What….What are you doing here?
Vicky: hmmmmm, what?? (she wakes up and looks at Jake) What do you think
I'm doing here?
Jake: I don't care what you think your doing here, I wanna know when
you're going to leave! (He gets off the bed, as he tries to stand up he weaves and sits
right back down) ouch, that hurts!
Vicky: That's what you get for drinking several bottles of champagne!
Jake: (he just looks at her) I didn't fin…
Vicky: Let me get you something for that head.
Jake: I don't need you to take care of me!
Vicky: You didn't think that last night.
Jake: What? What happened last night?
Vicky: Needless to say, I took care of you last night. Just sit down,
shut up, and I'll be right back!
(Vicky walks out of the room, Jake gets up to leave and sits right back down on the bed
again)
Jake: Ouch, (he puts his hands to his head) if only my head would stop
swimming...
(Vicky walks back into the room in a few minutes with some aspirin and a glass of water)
Vicky: Here take this, and maybe your head will stop hurting. (She hands
him the glass of water and aspirin, Jake reluctantly takes them from her)
Jake: (under his breath) Ya that's about the only thing……. How
did you find me?
Vicky: Amanda
Jake: I knew she couldn't keep a secret! That little princess is going to
pay.
Vicky: Well, she didn't tell me directly but I figured it out, that's not
the point! The point is that I found you and you're not leaving until you listen to what I
have to say! (she has her hands on her hips)
Jake: Listen Vicky I don't have the strength right now to fight with you?
Vicky: Good! Then just listen!
Jake: I….I….
Vicky: Shut up, Mckinnon…You had your chance to speak, now I want my
chance! First of all I DID NOT sleep with Shane, not that night, not ever! When I married
you, I married you forever! Yes, I lied to you about that night, and that was the biggest
mistake, and I'll regret it all my life, but do you remember that night when you came to
the cabin? If you knew I was there I don't know what you would have done.
Jake: Then why didn't you tell me later, when I called?
Vicky: Jake, I don't know why,
Jake: I do.
Vicky: Well you're wrong, you're wrong about a lot of things…..Let
me start from the beginning……

Scene 12:
Setting: New York Apartment, Jake is sitting on the couch, and Vicky is sitting in a chair
across from him.
Vicky: ………that's the story, Jakem that's all of it, now I
know you don't think I love you like you love me, but I do…. (She is crying, she gets
out of her chair and kneels in front of Jake)…… I love you more than life
itself.
Jake: (he puts his hands on her shoulders) there just words Vick, just
words, when you love someone you show it also by actions, your actions that night showed
me you didn't love me. (he gets off the couch and goes and stands by the window and looks
out the window) As much as I love you, I told you once before that I wouldn't settle for
second place and it seems like I did.
Vicky: What does coming here to find you mean, isn't that action? doesn't
it show you how much I want you back home?
Jake: (still looking out the window, running his hand through his hair,
after a minute he says) Vick, I'm tired…….I'm tired of fighting for us, I'm
tired of worrying when your gonna change your mind about us, I'm tired of doing all the
work, I just cant fight anymore….
Vicky: (walking up behind Jake)….. Then let me take over, let me
show you that we are worth fighting for, that You and I are the ties that bind us together
(she whispers)….let me do it then.
Jake: (he turns to look at her, just about to give in….) NO! (he
walks past her and wipes the corner of his eyes) I think you better leave now.
Vicky: Now? You want me to leave now! I thought you were a fighter Jake,
I thought you never gave up, you mean to tell me you're gonna give up now just when the
going gets tough, your gonna throw in the towel. I thought you promised through good times
and bad?
Jake: That's not fair!
Vicky: Fair! you think I'm going to play fair when I have our whole lives at stake here?
not just you and me, but the boys, did you think of the boys at all?
Jake: Hey, I talked to my guys I told them I would be there for them
always?
Vicky: Like Grant or Jamie are? Are you going to be there when Kirkland
hits his first home run? Are you going to be there when Steven needs to talk to a Man?
When are you going to be there, when you're living here? tell me!
Jake: Don't turn this around on me, this would never had happened had you
not lied to me.
Vicky: But I told you why!
Jake: You just think telling me why is going to fix everything? Listen, I
asked you to leave if you're not going to leave then I will!
Vicky: I'M NOT LEAVING! (she says with firmness)
Jake: Ya??
Vicky: YA!
Jake: Fine!.. (he walks out the door and slams it shut)
Vicky: UGH!!!! Jake? (she starts for the door and her cell phone rings)
Of all the timing! (she digs in her purse and pulls out the phone) What! (its Donna on the
other end)
Donna: Darling its Donna, there's something wrong….
Vicky: No! how could you, how could this happen? I'll be right there,
have you called Joe? Okay don't worry, I'm coming home! (she hangs up the phone, and looks
around the room as if she doesn't know what to do, then she goes over and picks up a piece
of paper and starts writing, when she is done she puts the paper near the Jake, Vicky,
Steven and Kirkland sign and runs out the door)
