The Ties that Bind,
Part 4
Scene 1
Setting: On the streets of Bay City,
(Amanda is walking down the street totally involved in what she is reading, shes not
looking where she is going. Coming down the opposite end of the street is this Man, hes
too busy looking at a map and some directions, he not looking where he is going, they bump
into each other and Amanda's papers go all over the place and so does his, she does look
up)
Amanda: What? Cant you see where your going, now look whats happened, I'm
late to begin with and now this happens, (she starts picking up her papers, she finally
looks up, there eyes lock for a minute and Amanda gets flustered, but she regains her
composure) I….I just don't need this today….
Man: I'm sorry miss I didn't….
Amanda: That's right! You didn't look where you were going… you
fool!
Man: Well I'm new here and I'm trying to find…..
Amanda: I don't have time for this, mister, I have to get to the office…
(she gets all her papers together and storms off)
Man: (looking after her) hmmmm and they say folks are more friendly these
days.
Scene 2
Setting: The herald, Jake and Amanda's office.
Amanda is busy working behind the desk, Steven comes in the door and he has a backpack on
that is quite full.
Steven: Amanda? Hi?
Amanda looks up
Amanda: Oh, hey Steven, what can I do for you? Are'nt you supposed to be
in school? You look certainly packed for it?
Steven: Oh uuh…we..uh … we have don't have school today, Is
Jake here?
Amanda: No honey he's not, he's out of town?
Steven: Do you know where he went?
(Just then a women comes in the door)
Maria: Excuse me, Miss Cory, the print shop needs you quick there is a
crisis with the ink shipment
Amanda: Oh what now, excuse me Steven I'll be right back, you sit right
down.
(she walks out the door with Maria, Steven sits there for a minute and then sneaks behind
the desk and starts snooping)
Steven: There has to be something here to tell me where he went, I've got
to find him fast. He looks at Amanda's appointment book and see's a little note that says
"send papers for JM to sign to 12800 Manhattan, suite 23, New York, NY" This has
to be where he is at, he gets a paper and copies the address down, and puts it in his
pants and starts to head out the door, in walks Amanda.
Amanda: Whoa little guy where do you think your going.
Steven: I have to get to school, bye
Amanda: But don't you want to know….(Steven runs right by her) but I
thought you didn't have school today….(she turns back into her office) that kid has
to be Jake's just like him, rude!
Amanda heads back into her office and sits back in the big chair and turns around so her
back is facing the door, she sits there a minute and closes her eye's,
Amanda: talking to herself) Jake I'm gonna make you pay when I get a hold
of you, I can't take another problem today.
All of a sudden in walks this Man:
Man: Finally! Jake old buddy, you don't know what I've been through today
to get here, I thought you said people were friendly, I just ran into this woman who had a
temper the color of her hair..RED…. What did you tell me about those redheads again?
Amanda sits upright, and slowly turns around knowing she has heard that voice before.
Amanda: I'm sure not all those stories about red……
Man: Oh, I'm so….aren't you that lovely lady I just had the pleasure
of running into.
Amanda: Well it wasn't my pleasure and if you were looking where you were
going then none of this would have happened.
Man: Whoa there don't start into me again, I'm just looking for Jake
Mckinnon, I'm and old friend of his and he told me whenever I needed a job just look him
up.
Amanda: Oh did he? Why is it everyone wants Jake all of a sudden? MARIA
Come in here!…
(Maria comes running through the door looking like she has been running all over the
office for Amanda)
Maria: Yes Miss Cory?
Amanda: Would you take (She looks at him)…hmmmm this man down to
personnel, so he can fill out an application.
Man: Hang on there a minute, first of all my name is Derek Summerfield
and I'm here to see Jake, I do not need to go to personnel. Can you just tell me when Jake
will be back?
Amanda: Not for a long while it appears, but I will give him your name
and let him know you came by.
Derek: Can you at least give me a hint where he has gone?
Amanda: He's not in Bay City I can tell you that.
Derek: (looking irritated) Well you are certainly friendly Red. I do hope
we meet again? (he turns around and walks out)
Amanda (after him): Hey, Hey don't call me Red…..ugh men!
Scene 3
Setting: Streets of New York
Jake did not go back to the apartment all day, he just wandered around the city, little
does he know that there is a crisis going on back home and he's needed there. As he is
walking along he sees this club so he walks in the door, the place is bustling with
people, its smokey and crowded.
There's a blues band playing, you hear the singer in the background singing…..
"You're damm right I got the blues
from my head down to my shoes

from my head down to my shoes
I can't win cause I don't have a thing to loose
Lord have you ever been mistreated
Then you got know, got to know just what
Im talking about
Lord I work 5 long years for one woman
And she had the nerve to mess around
I got a job at a steel mill….."
Jake: Ya this is just what I need (he heads for the bar) Bartender,
Whiskey straight up.
The bartender hands him his drink, Jake says: Start a tab will ya Joe..
he then looks at the glass for a minute, picks it up and says "to life, liberty and
the blues!"
Pretty Brunette: So you got the blues too?
Jake: (he looks at her and half smiles) Ya you could say something like
that.
Pretty Brunette: My Names Nicole, but my friends call me Nicky.
Jake: Jake's the name.
Nicole: May I join you?
Jake: If you like, but let me tell you straight off I'm here just to
drink my drinks and listen to the music.
Nicole: Well, me too ..uh, Jake, right?
Jake: Ya, Jake it is.
Nicole: Bartender, I'll have glass of wine please…..
Nicole gets her drink from the bartender and turns around on her stool to listen to the
band, Jake gets his and does the same…
The band starts playing another song, titled "The love you save may be your own"
This woman with a throaty voice gets us and starts singing.
People I've been mislead and Ive been afraid
Ive been abused whoa and Ive been accused
Been refused a piece of bread
But I ant never in my life before,
Seen so many love affairs
Go wrong as I do today,
I want you to stop
Find out what's wrong
Get it right, or leave love alone
Because the love you save today,
May very well be your own…..
