The Ties that Bind, Part 6

Scene 1
Setting: New York, Mustang Sally's Blues/Jazz club

Jake comes back from the phone and he sees, Anne, Shari, and Nicole whispering and laughing.

Jake: Okay, what's so funny?

They all 3 look at each other.

Shari: I gotta go serve drinks. (walks away)

Anne: I'm on again…(walks away)

Nicole (still laughing to herself) : I guess that leaves me.

Jake: What?

Nicole: Just that we came to a conclusion about you is all.

Jake: Oh really, you don't even know me.

Nicole: We've seen enough.

Jake: Well, can a man get a fresh drink here first, because I have a feeling your gonna tell me what it is and I'm not going to like it, am I?

Nicole: Probably not.

We hear Anne in the background start up again….
(the crowd starts clapping)

Anne: Listen up gang, I've just made a new friend tonight, and man he's got the blues all right. So to Jake, my new friend, listen up, this one is just for you…

Jake: (smerks and sits down, he gets a fresh drink and salutes her as she starts singing)

(as Anne is singing the song we see Jake flashing back to him and Vicky, when they first hit town on his bike, the baby switch, him helping her get over Ryan, the first kiss that involved water, the engagement party, the wedding…) Jake is smiling


…And feeling of communication

(then it switches we see Shane enter the picture, we see Jake letting Vicky go at the docks, we see Vicky telling Jake that she will never feel the same way about him as she does Shane, we see the courtroom scene)

We see Jake come out of his trance and he's facing the bar and looking in the mirror at his reflection and he says…

Jake: NO! Not this time Vick.

Nicole: So that's her name, is it?

Jake: Oh what,…. damn….

Nicole: Ya, us women can do that to you, cant we?

Jake: (he puts his hands on his face and rubs his slight beard and eyes) And to think I came here to get away from women!

Nicole: Jake, you can NEVER get away from Women, especially the one that you love, when she's in your heart, that is something that you can't drink away or run away from. Because your heart is the one thing you can't leave behind.

Jake doesn't say a word he just lifts his glass and swallows the rest of his drink.

Fade out.

Scene 2
Setting: Bay city bus station

Steven is looking at the board for the next bus to New York, he's looking around, he looks in his wallett and pulls out his money,

Steven: $14.27 is all I have, that's not going to get me a ticket either.

Just then you hear people getting off a bus, and the bus driver says:

Bus Driver: 15 minute break, and then please get back on the bus, New York is our next stop.

Steven smiles to himself, Yep that's the bus I need. He looks around and sees the driver heading off to get coffee, so he sneaks his way on the bus and hides.

Steven: All right!  I'm on my way..

Exit

Scene 3
Setting: Apartment in New York

Jake comes stumbling through the door Nicole is trying to help him in.

Nicole: It's a good thing you came to my place, you probably wouldn't have gotten a free ride home, if you had gone somewhere else.

Jake: True enough, but then I probably wouldn't have gotten the little speech either. So are you going to join me for a night cap?

Nicole: (laughing) I don't think so.  Jake, like I said you cannot drink her out of your heart, why don't you go take a shower, you look like you need a shower and shave and certainly some sleep.

Jake: Sleeping is a wasted art in my opinion, what I need is to forget and this (looking at a bottle of liquor) is what will help.

Nicole: Boy, you are one stubborn man aren't you?  She certainly must have done some kinda number on you.

Jake: Number? Like being hit by a semi-truck, then the truck backing up over me again….She lied to me, she used me, she told me she loved me while she was in love with another man, wouldn't you want to forget all that?

Nicole: Well I guess so, but have you talked to her?

Jake: Talking, like sleeping, is way overrated!

Nicole: (looking around the room, noticing the balloons, flowers and sign, but not noticing the note, because the note fell off the sign and is on the floor now) Well, from the looks of this room, it looked like you have kids and were planning on staying here.

Jake: (looking around the room, in a very soft voice) ya, something like that…

Nicole: So you have kids too?

Jake: No, they're not mine.   They are her boys, but I consider them my kids as well.

Nicole: Well, what about them then?  have you thought about how this affects them?

Jake: I've talked with them.  they will be alright.

Nicole: From the look on your face and what your telling, or not telling, me I don't think so, mister.

Jake: (just looking at her) ….I guess I'll take that shower.. (he heads off to the bathroom)

Nicole: Why don't you do that and I'll make some coffee for us.

Jake: Whatever you like….

Fade out

Scene 4
Setting: The Cottage..

Vicky: Where is Jake? He should have gotten my note by now.

Paulina: I'm sure he has, and is on his way home right now.

Vicky: He should be here by now, unless he doesn't care anymore.

Donna: Darling, he cares.  this is his family, why don't you call the apartment to be sure.

Vicky: (looking worried) I guess I could try and see if he is still there. (she heads to the phone and picks up a little phone book, gets the number, and calls. the phone rings a couple of times and then a woman answers the phone)

Woman: uh, hello?

Vicky: oh, oh I must have the wrong number.

Woman: Wait, wait, this is Jake's place.

Vicky: (shocked ) oh is, is Jake there?

Woman: Yes, but he's in the shower right now, can I take a message?

(In the background we hear Jake yelling, "Hey there's no towels in here, would you mind bringing me one?")

Woman: Just a second….. Yes, anyway, can I take a message?

Vicky: (Mad and Upset) NOT ANYMORE!!! (she hangs up the phone)

Paulina: What was that all about?

Vicky: I guess Jake has already moved on, now it's up to me to take care of this! (she storms out of the room)

Scene 5
Setting: New York Apartment

Nicole: (she hangs up the phone, to herself) why do I get the feeling that was the Woman who broke his heart?

Jake comes out of the bathroom, with a robe on and drying his hair with a towel . . . Nicole looks him up and down, with appreciation.

Nicole: Mercy me . . . Hmmm . . . some woman just called I think it was Vick, Vicky, is that her name?

Jake: I wouldn't doubt it, she was here this morning, or yesterday morning, is it, trying to talk to me.

Nicole: She sounded pretty mad when I told her you where in the shower.

Jake: (a smile on his face) Oh really, good, maybe a little of her own medicine.

Nicole: Well, she didn't leave a message and she sounded a little worried.

Jake: She'll get over it.

Jake walks over to the sign and finally sees the note on the floor goes over and picks it up.

Jake: What is this? (he opens it and reads the note)

Jake,
Steven has run away, I'm headed back home to find him.. hurry home. I'm not giving up on us, I need you. Love, Vicky.

Nicole: What is it?

Jake: It's one of my boys, he has run away from home. I have to get back to Bay City to find him.

(He runs back to the bedroom to change)
