Shinji Ikari - our hero
Shinji is a psychologist's wet dream.
A fourteen year old boy whose mother is dead, whose father has basically abandoned him, and who is forced into being a pilot of a strange machine simply because this father has a "need" for him.
Shinji's need for love and acceptance is the prevailant theme of the series.
I really love the character of Shinji. I think he reminds a lot of us of what it was like to be fourteen.
Shinji is a child in an adult's world. He desires the repect and friendship of others, yet he's felt his whole life that he was unwanted. Now he can gain what he desires - through the hell of piloting the eva.
But is piloting eva really hell? Or does it bring him closer to his mother?
