Unusual Suspects:
Date: May 1989
On Screen Locations:
- Fells Point Industrial Park, Baltimore Maryland
- Homicide Unit, Baltimore City Police Department
- Baltimore Convention Center - Computer and Electronics Show
Summary: JF Byers, Ringo Langley and Melvin Frohike are arrested after being found in a warehouse. As Byers proceeds to tell his tale to Det. Munch we find out that a mysterious woman by the name of Susanne Modeski caused the trio's problems. Byers was attending an electronics show representing the FCC, when he spots Susanne Modeski. He follows her and finds out that she is looking for her daughter who was kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend. She gives him a false name and has him hack into the DOD's Arpanet system to download the information on her daughter, which comes through as an encrypted file. Before she can get anywhere, Mulder shows up and Susanne fingers him as her boyfriend. Byers inlists the help of Frohike and Langley and they discover that Susanne is actually a chemist wanted for murder. Just then, she bursts into the room they are in. Susanne explains that she is being framed for the deaths of her collegues because she was working on a Top Secret project involving a hallucinogenic gas. By cracking the coded file, they go to the address of the warehouse which is housing the drug. Mulder shows up, but before he can haul them in two thugs arrive and try to take Susanne with them. A shoot out ensues and Mulder begins ripping his clothes off when he is sprayed with copious amounts of the ergotomine. Just as one of the thugs is about to off Mulder, Susanne kills the would be assassin. After she bolts X and a crew come in and sanitize the place leaving the three gunman and Mulder alive. Next morning, Mulder has come to and cooberates parts of their story and they are released. Using a bit of logic, they track Susanne to the local newspaper. She's trying to tell her story, but no one believes her, as she's walking down the street she is abducted, and we see that X is again involved. The episode ends when Mulder arrives asking for answers.
Rumminations: The character Det. Munch is from the NBC show Homicide. The number on this episode is 5x01, because it was filmed first due to schedualing conflects with DD and GA who were finishing up FTF. It was aired after Redux and Redux II.
Unanswered Questions: What happened to Susanne Modeski? Why was the test being conducted in the first place?
Continuity and Production Problems: DD supossedly was wearing his wedding ring in this episode (I haven't seen it.) which I'd like to think was merely a production problem. In this episode Frohike reads Mulder's file off and it most definitely says he's single. The Internet capbilities were very primitive at this time with a 2400 baud modem at the top end.
Redux:
Date: The day of and the day after Mulder's 'death' in Gethemane- which has not been established. October 1997?
On Screen Locations:
- Department of Defense
- FBI Headquarters Washington DC
- Paleoclimatology Lab American University
Summary: Mulder confronts Ostelhoff, the man who was watching his apartement, and accidentally kills him, discovering that the FBI is implicated in the conspiracy. Next morning, Scully misidentifies the body as Mulder's. Mulder then uses Ostelhoff's ID to gain access to the DOD. There he runs into Kritschgau who tells him 'the truth' that the whole alien cover-up story was nothing more than a hoax used by the military to distract attention away from the build-up of non-sanctioned weaponry. Scully compares her DNA to the chimera found in the ice core samples and comes up with a match, giving her a link between her cancer and the conspiracy. Mulder finds numerous rooms where tests are being conducted before finding his way to the pentagon, and an elaborate filing system. In one of these files he obtains a 'cure' for Scully's cancer. Scully attends a meeting discussing Mulder's final actions and before she can make her accusation she becomes ill. CSM allows Mulder to leave the DOD building. Consulting the LGM, Mulder finds out that the 'cure' he stole is nothing more than de-ionized water.
Rumminations: The voice overs caused a lot of annoyance with the fans, but it was used because of the filming of FTF caused scheduling conflicts. Scully is now back to her 'I can't lie to save my soul' self, as she avoids eye contact with Skinner in the hallway. In Gethemane, it appeared that she believed what she was telling the committee was true- that Fox Mulder was dead.
Unanswered Questions: Why would CSM let Mulder go when he has him cornered at the DOD?
Changed Premises: The phone records seem to indicate that Redux is taking place in October despite the fact that Gethsemane was in the spring.
Redux II:
Date: Two days after Mulder's 'death' in Gethemane- which has not been established. October 1997?
On Screen Locations:
- Trinity Hospital Emergency Medical Unit, Washington
- FBI Headquarters Washington DC
- Trinity Hospital
Summary: Mulder finds Scully in the ICU. Skinner must then present him to Blevins. CSM is taken to task after letting Mulder leave the DOD building. Scully believes that Skinner is the mole in the FBI and warns Mulder of this. CSM tries to get Mulder to join the consortium, by offering him the cure for Scully's cancer (which he already has- a microchip at the bottom of the vial he stole) and a visit with Samantha. Scully decides to have the chip implanted and when the cancer doesn't go into remission, she turns to God. Skinner is spotted at a senate hearing covering human cloning, which causes the first elder to turn up the heat. Blevins calls Mulder in to offer him a deal. Mulder appears before an FBI panel and implicates Blevins as the inside man. Blevin's is killed by another FBI mole and CSM is shot through his window. Through some means (medical, microchip or faith) Scully's cancer goes into remission.
Rumminations: Don't tick the consortium members off. They killed CSM because he let Mulder go? Everytime I see this episode, I call it 'Friends' since everybody and their uncle wants to be Mulder's pal.
Unanswered Questions: Was the woman claiming to be Samantha really her? Is CSM really Samantha's father? Is CSM really dead? What caused the remission of Scully's cancer? And the biggy, is there such a thing as aliens or was it all a prefabricated hoax perpetrated by the government?
Plot Oversights: How did Mulder know that it was Blevins he was after? What a lucky guesser.
Continuity and Production Problems: The clocks were very wacky in Redux II. When Mulder enters the hospital the time stamp tells us it's 5:13 AM. The clock over his shoulder reads 5:30, then 5:13. When CSM tries to convince Mulder into joining the dark side, he finishes his cigarette and throws it on the ground. In the next shot, he's still holding it. Despite Skinner's supposition that anyone who lost that much blood must surely be dead is incorrect. CSM shows up in The End.
Detour:
Date: Sometime after Redux II. October 1997?
On Screen Locations:
- Leon County North Florida
- Route 43 Leon County
- Asekoff Residence
Summary: On their way to a team seminar in Florida, Mulder and Scully stumble upon a police investigation. Three men have disappeared in the forest, which has been earmarked for development, the only clue being inhuman footprints found at the scene. After the wife and son of one of the missing men are attacked in their home, Mulder and Scully search the woods with the help of Michele Fazekas and Jeff Glaser. Fazekas is attacked and Glaser runs away, leaving Mulder and Scully to fend for themselves. The next morning, Scully falls into a hole which is part of a tunnel system created by the nearly invisible creatures. When one of these creatures charges, Scully kills it. The agents they came with in the car, arrive and rescue Mulder and Scully from the pit.
Rumminations: Why do Mulder and Scully need to go on a teamworks seminar? I will never be able to hear Three Dog Night's rendition of Joy to the World without a bigass grin on my face. The shipper in me was hoping for the second verse about "making sweet love to you."
Unanswered Questions: What were these creatures exactly? The original Spaniards or their offspring?
Geographical Inconsistancies: Although there is a Leon County in Florida and the Apalachicola State Park is indeed there, I could not find a Route 43.
Equipment Oddities: The modem Mulder has on his laptop is blazingly fast.
Mulder's cell phone works in a boxcar in Anazasi, but Scully can't phone home in Florida? As Scully says, "The closest thing to primitive down here is living in a beachfront retirement condo."
Continuity and Production Problems: The rain was a big problem in this episode, and it was difficult keeping the actor's hair dry. In one scene Mulder is running through the forest and his hair is plastered to his forehead. When he bursts through the trees, into a clearing, his hair is clean and dry.
Christmas Carol:
Date: December 21 to the 25 1997
On Screen Locations:
- US Naval Station - San Diego, CA
- Transgen (Pransgen) Pharmaceuticals
- San Diego County Jail
Summary: Scully and her mom visit Bill and Tara for Xmas. Scully gets a call from a woman who sounds like Melissa, When she follows up she finds her self at the home of an apparent suicide. The young daughter (Emily) in the home looks a lot like Melissa did at that age. When another call comes in, Scully convinces the local PD that something fishy is going on. Using some of Emily's DNA, Scully has a test run that makes it look like Melissa and Emily are related. When questioning a Dr. Calderon of Transgen Industries, it comes out that they have been paying Emily's father to use Emily as a test subject against the wishes of the mother. After an incriminating piece of evidence is found, Emily's father confesses, only to be found dead in his cell not 24hrs later. Scully tries to adopt Emily, but her request is not looked upon favorably. Christmas day, a more thorough DNA comes back confirming that Emily is HER daughter.
Rumminations: Transgen was changed to Pransgen in the second airing because Transgen is a real company. DD looked pretty stupid in his elf hat, why was he in this episode at all? John Gilnitz is the tech who ran the PCR for Scully. Scully's other brother is finally mentioned- Charles. His name was inserted in MM, but that scene was cut because of lack of time.
Unanswered Questions: Who was it that called Scully? A voice from the great beyond? Why now? Since there really was nothing Scully could do for Emily. See Emily for more details.
Plot Oversights: The Tox screen lists the DOB for Rebecca Sims as 6/6/67 making her 30 not 40 as claimed by Kresge. Melissa's picture wasn't necessarily taken in October of 94 but it was developed then.
Changed Premises: The cross that Scully wears was given to her by her mother for her 15th birthday (Acension) but here they have her mother giving it to her for Christmas. Scully's badge number has changed from JTTO331613 in Teliko to 2317616 here.
Continuity and Production Problems: Ooopsie, a prop for Kitsunegari (a report on Modell) was mixed in with some paperwork that Scully was checking out.
Post-Modern Prometheus:
Date: November, December 1997?
On Screen Locations:
Summary: Eighteen years ago, Shaineh Berkowitz found herself in a 'condition'. She was pregnant after being asleep for three days. After watching the Jerry Springer show, she writes to Mulder with her story explaining that it's happened again. Scully notices a comic book written by Izzy (Mrs. B's son) and the description of her attacker matches that of the monster. When the agents go out to a field to get a glimpse of the Great Mutato, a raucous chase insues leading them to visit a Dr. Polidori. Dr. Polidori is a genetisist and has been experimenting with a few of his theories. When a local farmer turns up dead, it looks like the Great Mutato was the culprit. The townsfolk go wild searching for him, burning down the barn before they corner him. After a heartfelt confession, the townfolk realise the real monster is Polidori, not the Great Mutato. The sureal episode ends with Mulder, Scully and the Great Mutato at a Cher concert (his favorite singer) and the birth of his offspring appearing on the Jerry Springer show.
Rumminations: The appearance of Christmas light's places this sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Although no actual place stamp is given, the newspaper indicates that the town they are in is Bloomington (Ill.?) The filming of this happened between CC and Emily, because of wrap up filming on FTF. Dr. Polidori was played by John O'Hurley a semi-regular on the Seinfeld Show. Chris Owens (Spender) played the monster. This was the first (and only) episode shot in black and white.
Unanswered Questions: Did this episode actually take place in the X-Files universe?
Plot Oversights: Mulder says that Shaineh claims to have had a tubal ligation two years ago, and when Scully checks the medical record she finds out that she did- only it happened in 93. Not two years ago. Thanks to April for this nit pick.
Emily:
Date: December 31, 1997- January 7 1998?
On Screen Locations:
- San Diego County Children's Center
- San Diego Hall of Justice
- Transgen (Pransgen) Pharmaceuticals
Summary: Mulder arrives in SD to tell Scully that's he's come to a dead end with reguards to finding Emily's real mother (she was adopted). Scully wants him to appear on her behalf at a custody hearing. Emily becomes ill and must be rushed to the hospital, but when a biopsy is performed, the ER doctor becomes sick from the toxic green blood. Dr Calderon will not treat Emily and Mulder knocks him about. When the good doctor leads Mulder back to a nursing home, the two shapeshifters we saw in CC kill him and assume his identity. One injects Emily with medicine while the other runs around town to keep Mulder occupied. When Mulder finds hmself back at the nursing home he enters and discovers Emily's mom. She and the other residents are put to sleep, where the fetus is implanted in their wombs until they've gestated long enough. Emily's condition worsens, and her tissue is necratizing. Mulder searches the home, acquires some of the medicine the shapeshifter used earlier and finds embroys floating in this same subsatnce. Det Kresge apprehends Mulder, but before he can establish his identity one of the shapeshifters returns. They are attacked and Kresge becomes ill when he shoots him. Emily dies and her body was taken by those who created her.
Rumminations: Why does Scully even have to go to the custody hearing? The DNA proves that she is Emily's biological mother, and not to sound totally crass- but wouldn't the state welcome the chance to get rid of the financial burden that Emily and her illness would entail? Not a nit per se- because hell, I'm sure the buracracy would make you go through the formalities. Transgen was changed to Pransgen in the second airing because Transgen is a real company.
Unanswered Questions: How many Scully children are out there? <Shudder> Poor Scully.
Plot Oversights: The second set of MRIs show a date of 10/31/97 which is incorrect (see Date above) as well as the the IV bags in the rest home which indicate a November time frame. How did Kresge know to go to the Nursing Home? Scully didn't even know where Mulder was- so what clue lead him there?
Changed Premises: Scully was missing for a period of three months (events of Ascension to One Breath) yet here they blithly shorten the duration to 4 weeks. Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.
Kitsunegari:
Date: January 1998?

Summary: Robert Patrick Modell (aka Pusher) talks a guard into releasing him from prison. The only person to visit him in the last few months was a nun. A clerk at a sporting goods store exchanges clothes with Modell. The prosecutor who convicted Modell is found dead from injesting cerulean- blue paint. The home has the idiogram- 'Fox hunt' written all over the walls. Linda Bowman (the DA's wife) is to meet a Fox Mulder at a local property. When Mulder gets to the warehouse, Modell aproaches him and tells him not to play the game. Because Pusher is not acting within his previous MO- Mulder begins to suspect Linda Bowman. Scully and Skinner think he's been pushed into think that. When Mulder tries to tie Ms. Bowman to the nun, the person who could ID her electrocutes herself in front of him. Modell catches up with Linda and forces Skinner to shoot him. Mulder arrives at the hospital, waiting for him to awake. Linda Bowman wills Modells heart to stop then leaves a clue to her whereabouts for Mulder to find. Mulder find Scully at the warehouse. She puts a gun to her head and fires because Linda Bowman pushed her into it. Linda appears and Mulder wants to kill her, but when she fires, Ms. Bowman reverts to Scully and the body on the floor is actually Linda, who was pushing Mulder the entire time. In their final report it is discovered that Linda Bowman was Modell's twin sister.
Rumminations: I liked the original Pusher, but this I found dull. Sad but true.
Unanswered Questions: Why was Modell suddenly a nice guy? What changed his mind? He had ample opportunity to kill numerous times yet he didn't.
Plot Oversights: How the hell does Mulder make the leap that Linda Bowman is responsible? A few strangely chosen words? <snort> I'm glad I'm never around when he needs a scapegoat. Linda Bowman is avenging her brother, so she kills him in the hospital. Huh? What caused Scully to arrive at the warehouse? Did Bowman call her up before she left the hospital?
Changed Premises: In Pusher it looked like Mulder shot Modell straight on. Here it looks like he shot him from the side of his head. How could Bowman try Modell in 1996 when he only woke up 6 months ago?
Continuity and Production Problems: In one shot of Modell on the TV- the mug shot has him at 6'2" and the next time the TV has him at 5'10". The time stamp at the sporting goods store is 9:13 am. When they go to the Bowman's home, the clock says 9:10. Mulder calls Ms. Bowman's office and she's already left for her 12:15 appointment (must be some long drive.) Why are Mulder and Scully driving a rental car? Wouldn't they just requistion one from the Bureau? They're within spitting distance of DC.
Schizogeny:
Date: January 1998?
On Screen Locations:
- Coats Grove, Michigan
- Department of the Corner
- Karin Matthews’ Residence
Summary: Mulder and Scully go to Michigan to investigate a man who was sucked into a mud pit in an orchard. It appears that his step-son Bobby might have killed him. Both Bobby's mother and his counselor Karen have different stories concerning Bobby's home life. Lisa, a friend of Bobby's, has a fight with her father and he too is found dead. Mulder believes that Mr. Baiocchi was pulled out the second story window (not pushed). An autopsy reveals a piece of green wood on the body and a local grower confirms that there is some kind of blight killing the trees. This very same blight happened shortly before the death of Karen's father. Karen seems to be schizo and imprisons Lisa in her basement. Lisa escapes with Mulder's help, but Karen has gone after Bobby. The trees and the very orchard seem to be responding to the unresolved rage that Karen had over being abused by her father. Before she can kill Bobby, the local grower decapitates Karen, ending the cycle.
Rumminations: Yes the story was that lame. Why Karen felt the need to lash out at her father's makes sense, but why the kids? They didn't do anything, unless you count having Karen for a guidance counselor as some thing wrong. (and considering how psycho she was- this is definitely a problem.)
Unanswered Questions: Why were we forced to watch this lame episode?
Plot Oversights: The death of one individual wouldn't warrent the FBI's involvement unless it was part of a series of deaths spanning state lines. Mulder and Scully really have no jurisdiction here. Scully mentioning an unbelievable amount of rainfall in Act 1 is not something that a trained scientist would do. Rather it was made to cover a stupid joke DD made on the talk show circuit. When Lisa looks out the window her father just went through, there's no jagged edges. Later when Mulder and Scully check- there is. When Scully and Mulder have their conversation outside of the car- there's a downpour taking place, only problem is, they aren't getting wet. I wouldn't want to be that local grower, because he's now going to have to go to jail for a very long time. Yes I decapitated her, no she didn't have a weapon, she was using the trees officer!
Changed Premises: Mulder always buckles up when he gets into a car. Why didn't he here, when he's rushing around looking for Bobby? You don't suppose he had one of his psychic insights and knew that the branch was going to try to get him? Why didn't the air bag inflate? And while they have Scully do the autopsy on the first gentleman, she wasn't asked to do the one on Mr. Baiocchi? Huh?
Equipment Oddities: When Scully is weighing the mud pie, she comes up with 12 lbs. 9oz. The scale says 11 lbs.
Chinga:
Date: February 1998?
On Screen Locations:
Summary: Scully is on vacation in Maine when she happens upon a store full of people who were clawing at their eyes. One person, the butcher, stuck a knife in his eye. The only woman to not be affected by this strange behavior is Melissa Turner. The locals consider her a witch. Melissa has seen the deaths of people before they happen and she's scared. Riggs a deputy who is sympathetic to her cause gives her the key to his cabin and urges her to lay low. Every time Polly (Melissa's daughter) is crossed in some way, something bad happens. It appears that the doll she is carrying is responsible for the mayhem. When Melissa views the death of Mrs. Froelich, the day care center owner, she almost runs down a ranger near the cabin. Scully tracks down a fisherman, who tells her the tale of Polly's father and how he died shortly after the doll was found. She and the Sheriff go to Melissa's home and find that she is trying to kill herself. Busting in the door and grabbing the doll from Polly's hands, Scully neutralizes the 'fetish'. Later, another fisherman on the ocean discovers the burnt remains of the doll.
Rumminations: Why couldn't 1013 have played up a religious aspect to this case? After all Relevations and All Souls both look at this phenomenon, and we know that Scully believes in it. It just seems to me that this was a missed opportunity. And it would have made Scully's opening herself up extreme possibilities much more plausible here. I love the book that Scully is reading: Affirmations for Women Who Do Too Much. LOL
Unanswered Questions: How does Scully know to grab the doll and put it in the microwave? What insight lead her to this conclusion? Is she just a big Steven King fan? <snerk>
Geographical Inconsistancies: I'm not a King fan, but evidently he likes to put the action in many of his books in Ammas Beach, Maine. Ammas Beach, doesn't exist, and is King's 'ideal' costal town.
Plot Oversights: It's Maine, it's winter time. Why would an intelligent woman, such as Scully want to drive around in a convertable with the top down wearing only a T-shirt? I don't believe Scully would set something on fire while standing in a puddle of kerosene, yet she does exactly this in Mrs. Turner's kitchen. Most food places make it manditory for all personnel to have their hair up and out of the way (heath inspectors insist) yet the girl at the ice cream counter has her's in a pony tail. Bet she's sorry for not listening to her boss, huh?
Equipment Oddities: When Scully gets out of the car to pump her gas- the volume sold is in litres (as it would be in Canada) and should be gallons (the American measure.) Plastic dolls do not go up in flames when they are microwaved (not that I've tried it). They melt.
Kill Switch:
Date: February 1998?
On Screen Locations:
- Logan Circle, Washington D.C.

- 7th and Kennedy, Washington D.C.
- Fairfax County, Virginia
- David Markham Residence
- North Platte, Nebraska
Summary: Mulder and Scully investigate the death of Donald Gelman, computer nerd extrodinare at a Washington diner. Using the LGM, they track down a cryptic e-mail which leads them to a shipping container that Esther Nairn (Invisigoth) has been living in. She tells them that she's been involved with the creation of an artificial life, that has run amok. By discovering it's weakness (it loves bandwidth), Mulder is able to track down a likely 'resting spot' for the intelligence. The AI is smart enough to capture Mulder, in the hopes of locating the kill switch, the program that Gelman designed to destroy the life form. Esther and Scully catch up with Mulder, but not before the AI gets the kill switch. Before the life form can finish processing the information necessary to inoculate itself, Esther sets an auto- destruct and uploads her consciousness to the net.
Rumminations: I guess it would have made for a short epiosde if Gellman had just hit the enter button instead of panicking and screaming, "NO!" wouldn't it?
Unanswered Questions: How would Mulder have known so quickly that there was something he need to check out at the Metro Diner? The killing obviously happened at night, and Scully clearly states that it's 2:45 am.
Plot Oversights: One wonders how Mulder keeps his job. Taking evidence from a crime scene without logging it in is a BIG no-no. Exactly how does an AI go about constructing it's nest? Someone, somewhere has to sign for things, and who actually built the trailer that the AI used as it's main node? Without some ONE supervising it's not believable that the job of constructing it would even be started, let alone finished. There's an error on the computer file on Mulder. It says he went to Oxford between 1983-1986, getting A.B. in psychology, entered the Quantico Academy in 1986 then assigned to the Violent Crimes Unit in 1988. But at the very end, it says he graduated summa cum laude in 1982! And went to the Quantico FBI Training Academy in 1984! And Mulder's disappearing coat. He's wearing it in the field as he approaches the trailer. When he enters it, he isn't wearing it. When Scully rescues him, he doesn't have it on and then, next morning he does. (thanks to Jane)
Equipment Oddities: The car would not have started to flash it's lights simply because a CD Rom was inserted into it's CD player. A 'normal' CD player and a computer CD player are similar, but only the computerized version could interpret data encoded on a CD with executable programs. And speaking of the car- it appears to be an import since the speedometer is in kilometres, not miles per hour. It is not possible for individuals to 'upload' their consciousness to a computer. Any one with a dial-up could see that Ester connects to the internet too quickly when she types in the laptop; as she and Scully are looking for Mulder.
Bad Blood:
Date: February 9, 1998
On Screen Locations:
- Chaney, Texas
- FBI Headquarters - X Files Office
- Peaceful Slumbers Funeral Parlor
- Sam Houston Motor Lodge - Night
- Rolling Acres RV Camp
- Dallas Fort Worth Pathology Lab
Summary: Scully and Mulder have vastly differing accounts of their time in Chaney Texas. The two agents were sent there to investigate the exsanguination of a tourist. Scully believes that there's some one who wants to be a vampire, while Mulder believes it is a vampire. More clues come to light, such as clorolhydrate in the bloodstream. When another gentleman is murdered, the second autopsy reveals that both victims ate pizza for they're final meal. This leads Scully to the conclusion that the pizzaman is the suspect they're looking for. Meanwhile, Mulder is at the hotel, eating the pizza Scully ordered before she had to depart. Ronnie Strickland tries to attack Mulder, but ends up being distracted by some tossed seeds. Scully busts in, guns blazing. Ronnie leaves and Scully chases after him. Mulder, in a drugged stupor, follows on foot and apprehends Ronnie by running a stake through his heart. His family is suing the FBI. Because Ronnie is a vampire, when the Coroner removes the stake, Ronnie awakens and tries to snack on his neck. The agents are sent back to Chaney to find out what's going on. Scully stands watch at the cemetery with Sheriff Harwell, while Mulder tracks Ronnie to his mobile home. Unfortunately, the rest of this sleepy community are also vampires. Mulder and Scully awake at there respective venues with nothing to show but a badge and some untied shoes.
Rumminations: I thought this episode was hysterical. One of the funniest things to me is the marksmanship displayed by the two agents. Mulder couldn't hit the tire on an RV which was making lazy circles in the parking lot, while Scully shot out the tires on a Gremlin as it was speeding away.
Geographical Inconsistancies: There is no Chaney Texas.
Plot Oversights: There were some editing problems in the beginning as subsequent
shots between Scully and Mulder kept switching between her arms crossed and her hands in her lap depending on the perspective. ( Thanks to Autumn Tysko)
Continuity and Production Problems: Intestines are never ever weighed during an autopsy. There's just no reason for it. Also, At the end of Mulder's version of events you see him demolishing a
chair cause he needs a nice pointy stake. Well, it looks like that didn't work, cause you can see someone on the left bottom corner of the screen moving a good stake into view. In the widescreen DVD version you can even see the hand of the person placing the stake. (Thanks to Diana de Bruin)
Patient X:
Date: End of February 1998?
On Screen Locations:
- Kazahstan, Former Soviet Union
- Massachusetts Institute Visiting Lectures' Forum
- Tunguska Gulag, Russia
- East 46th Street, New York City
- Uroff-Koltoff Star of Russia, New York Harbor
Summary: In the former Soviet Union, a group of people have gathered, they are waiting for a UFO. They are all burned to death. The only survivor is found by Alex Krycek and whisked away before Marita and the UN soldiers can do anything about it. Mulder appears on a UFO panel and decries the believability of Cassandra Spender- a multiple abductee. Krycek uses a russian doctor to infect the survivor with the black oil and sews up his orifices. Absconding to the US, Krycek offers the consortium the survivor in exchange for information regarding a vaccine. Agent Spender (Cassandra's son) wants Mulder to leave his mother alone. Scully visits with Cassandra and discovers important facts about the case, facts that Mulder seems uninterested in. Marita meets with Krycek and after a little lovin, she grabs the survivor and calls Mulder. Scully has taken off, being called against her will to Ruskin dam. When she arrives she finds Cassandra is already there. As they watch, a UFO descends and faceless aliens proceed to burn the people on the bridge. To be continued...
Rumminations: More mytharc - more muddying of the waters. Chris Carter is adding needless complexity by adding the faceless aliens, perhaps in the hopes of extending the back story for more than five seasons (which was his original stop date). This does appear to be the beginning of the end of the project.
Unanswered Questions: Just who are the faceless aliens and why are they interested in killing the abductees?
Changed Premises: Skyland Mountain was a private resort [ see Ascention] , it now appears to be a national (state) park.
The Red and the Black:
Date: Beginning of March 1998?
On Screen Locations:
- Ruskin Dam, Pennsylvania
- Uroff-Koltoff Star of Russia, New York Harbor
- Office of Dr. Heitz Werber, Silver Springs, Maryland
Summary: Scully is found alive at the bridge but remembers nothing. Cassandra's body is nowhere to be found. WMM offers Krychek freedom in exchange for the Russian vaccine. A UFO crash lands at Wiekamp AFB and a faceless alien is captured. The Syndicate realizes that there's two factions at work here and that the faceless alien is a rebel. WMM wants to deal with the rebels but is outvoted, because the serum doesn't appear to work (they're testing it on Marita who was infected when she took the Russian survivor.) Mulder discovers that all the victims had implants. He and Scully go to Dr. Werber who hypnotizes her. Scully recalls two seperate ships, one which kidnaps Cassandra. Spender explains to Scully why he's so leery of abduction phenomenon- since his mother 'brainwashed' him into believing such things. Krychek contacts Mulder and gives him the location of the rebel and clues him into the 'lighthouses' and mass abduction plans as well as the rebellion. Scully and Mulder drive to the base, only to be stopped at the front gate. Mulder recognizes the driver of a vehicle leaving and stows aboard it as it leaves. As he's about to look inside the cargo box in the back, another alien appears and Mulder looses all memory of the next few minutes. Spender receives a letter from his father. CSM.
Rumminations: We learn that CSM is still alive and is Jeffry Spender's father. Also, we find out that the faceless aliens are rebels intent on destroying the projects guinea pigs.
Unanswered Questions: Who has Cassandra Spender? Is it the colonists, the rebels or the government?
Geographical Inconsistancies: There is no Silver Springs Maryland, it should be Silver Spring (singular not plural).
Plot Oversights: How did CSM survive a gun shot wound which produced enough blood to have killed him? Who spirited him away- since he probably wasn't in any condition to get to a doctor on his own? It couldn't have been a consortium member since they're the ones who marked him for death.
Continuity and Production Problems: Scully has no bandage on her hand when Mulder comes into her hospital room, but moments later it's wrapped up.

Summary: Edward Skur dies in a house with a dessicated body, muttering the name, "Mulder". Mulder visits a retired Agent Arthur Dales, who was the officer on record of investigating some murders Skur suppossedly commited. On a tip, Mulder discovers that his father, William Mulder might be connected to the case somehow. Mulder returns to Dale's apartment to get the full story. Dales arrested Skur for 'communist' activity. Skur then hung himself. In a fit of remorse Dales goes to Skur's house to find that the man isn't dead. When reporting his findings he is told to change his story. A German doctor, who helped Skur is found dead; all of his internal organs are gone. Bill Mulder tips Dales off, explaining that Skur is a patriot, who allowed himself to be experimented with. Unfortunatly, now that the experiements are over (failed?) no one wants him. Skur is dangerous and believes that Dales is his enemy. Skur does attack Dales partner, and some strange spiderlike appendage devours all of his organs. Dales is told to drop the case or suffer the concequences. A clerk leads Dales to the X-Files where the German doctor is mentioned. An autopsy is done on one of Skur's fellow lab rats, and a spider like creature which was grafted in was found. Bill Mulder escorts Dales to a meeting with Skur, who then tries to kill Dales. Fortunatley, Dale's wins the battle and arrests Skur. Later, Bill Mulder and Skur are driving down a deserted road, Bill exits the vehicle and gives Skur the keys.
Rumminations: Mulder sports a wedding ring and smokes. The smoking is metaphor for the obfuscation involved in the conspiracy. No, Mulder isn't involved, but he hasn't seen the light of day, and his vision is clouded by the smoke surrounding him. The wedding ring... see Changed Premises
Unanswered Questions: Where does this new alien fit into the established X-Files Universe? It's an anamoly. Thank goodness we'll never hear about spider aliens again.

Changed Premises: Mulder was married? DD quite clearly in two seperate scenes flashes his wedding ring. In both Unusual Suspects previous to this episode and Kill Switch after this episode, FBI records indicate that Fox Mulder is single. Bill Mulder is a member of the State Department in this tale, yet in Musings... he left his job at the State Department to become an Army Captain? Huh? Doesn't that usually work the other way around?
Equipment Oddities: Former Special Agent Arthur Dales opens the curtain and then proceeds to sit down. Simultaneously, a sound of the curtain closing is heard despite the fact that Dales was sitting at the moment and his hand was not near the curtain.

Summary: When a drug dealer is murdered, a blind woman, Marty is found cleaning up the scene of the crime. She's arrested, but released due to lack of concrete evidence. Marty is seeing through the eyes of the killer, and when he kills again- she confesses to both crimes. As an act of spite, Marty informs the killer's contact that the police are watching, which scares him off. When genetic testing proves her innocence beyond a reasonable doubt, Mulder convinces Marty to help the authorities. By tracking down old medical information he discovers that the killer is Marty's father. Sending the agents on a wild goose chase, Marty sets her father up- who's stalking her with the intent of killing her. In a case of poetic justice, Marty kills her father by looking through his eyes at her. As far as Marty is concerned life in jail is more liberating than experiencing life through her father's eyes.

Summary: Scully recounts a recent case to her priest in the confessional. She's asked by Fr. Mc Cue to help the parents of a handicapped child, who died under mysterious circumstances. When she looks into things further, it turns out that the girl was one of quadruplets, and a second child is found in the same perdicament. This second victim was about to be adopted by a Father Gregory, who turns out to have some very unorthodox ideas. Later Scully attempts to do an autopsy and has a vision of her dead daughter Emily. A social worker (Aaron Starky) and Mulder track down a third sister, but not before she too is killed, with Fr. Gregory in the vicinity. The priest is arrested, and while Mulder and Scully are interegating him, news of the fourth girl surfaces. Starky finds his way into the interegation room, and kills Gregory before he can do much more than warn the Agents of the danger around them. Mulder tracks down the girls father only to find she's gone, and Scully must deal with the paperwork on the dead priest. As she leaves the precinct, she has a vision of a four headed man. When she confides in Fr. Mc Cue he explains that what she's describing is a Seraphim- and recounts an ancient story of the Nephalim, half angel / half human hybrids who must return to heaven. Starky gives Scully the whereabouts of the final girl, but because he's actually a devil/demon he cannot enter the premises. Scully realizes that she can't take the girl back to Starky, but before they can leave the Seraphim calls to the child. Another vision occurs, where the girl becomes Emily who asks to be let go, because it is God's will. When it's over, the final quintuplet is dead.

Summary: A task force stakes out a meeting between Jacob Haley, a member of an extreme militia group and an arms dealer. The meeting end when the arms dealer doubles over, killed by some flesh eating bacteria and Haley bolts. Scully suspects Mulder only because of his suspicious activity at the time. She tails him and is stopped by some other agents. Turns out Mulder is working undercover, but wasn't allowed to say anything. Mulder is taken to task by the new Spartans, but is reluctantly allowed to stay, not before they break one of his fingers. As it turns out, there's a power struggle going on and Haley is trying to oust current leader August Bremer. We see Bremer infect a theater full of people in Ohio, testing the potency of their new biological weapon. Mulder is coerced into helping the group rob a bank, whose real purpose is to infect thousands via the money in the reserve. Bremer plays a tape implicating Mulder and discrediting Haley. Through trickery, Bremer allows Mulder to go free, revealing himself to be a deep undercover operative, working for the government. When Mulder gets to the bank, Scully is already there- having figured out the plan for infecting the populace. Although it can't be proven, it looks as though the CIA orchestrated the whole plan, for some undisclosed reason.

Summary: Mulder investigates a threat against a telemarketing firm. One of the employees, Gary Lambert, is trying to warm everyone of the danger he sees. Mulder arrives at the office just as Lamber goes postal. During hostage negotiations, Lambert requests a TV link up- so he can show the world that his boss, Mr. Pinkus is actually a brain- sucking insect. Taking a chance, the police SWAT team storm the building and Mulder saves Pinkus' life. In the shadows created by the capture, Mulder sees the real Pinkus and he is in fact a monster. Looking at old cases, Mulder tries to convince Scully that there's something strange going on, but she'll hear none of it. Things heat up, when Mulder tries to shoot Pinkus in Skinner's presence. Mulder is sent to the psych ward. He persuades Scully to take another look at one of the 'zombies' and she finds odd bite marks. When she returns to the hospital to discuss the case with Mulder he is being attacked. She rushes in and shoots. Although there's no hard evidence, Scully cooberates Mulder's story enough that he's released. Meanwhile Pinkus is at a new company, sucking the life out of his new employees.

Summary: A chess master is shot during a match. Krychek hunts down CSM and returns him to the syndicate's folds. Spender is put in charge of the inquiry into the shooting. Mulder shows up and posits that the real target was Gibson Praise. Another agent, Diana Fowely agrees, much to Spender dismay. It turns out there is some history between Fowely and Mulder. She was there when he discovered the X-Files. The consortium ask CSM to take care of the Gibson problem- he agrees. It turns out that Gibson can read people's minds. Scully goes to the LGM to find out more information on Praise and Fowley. The evidence seems to be scientific proof that extra sensory perception does exist. The shooter tries to arrainge a deal in exchange for immunity but CSM kills him before that can happen. That same night, Fowley is shot while watching Gibson who is taken, to be studied by the project doctors. Mulder sees Spender with CSM and assumes that he's at fault and promises to take him down. CSM steals the file on Samantha, sets fire to the X-Files office and reveals himself to be Spenders father. The X-Files are to be shut down and all Mulder and Scully have is each other as they survey the ruins.

Summary: 35,000 years ago aliens walked the earth. When one was killed, a black oil like substance seeped into the ground. Present day Texas, we see a group of boys digging. One of them falls through a sink hole and lands on the exact spot the alien died. Since it was only dormant, the black oil activates; infecting the child. Firemen are dispatched and enter the cavern looking for the boy, but contact is lost almost immediately. Vehicles with no discernible markings begin to arrive, as well as men dressed in Biohazard suits. Entering the cave, they return with the victim. A week later, a Federal Building in Dallas is targeted by a bomb threat. Mulder and Scully are across the street looking into a 'hunch'. As it turns out, their hunch is valid and the building is about to blow. The senior agent stays with the bomb under the pretense of defusing it. He lets the timer run out. Two weeks later, OPR wants to know how Mulder and Scully knew which building was endangered, implying that they were at fault. Scully is disheartened and talks about leaving the FBI. Mulder goes to a bar and gets drunk. A Dr. Alvin Kurtzweil approaches him and tells him to look at the evidence again. Mulder is intrigued enough to take the tip seriously and asks for Scully's help. An autopsy of the bomb blast victims seems necessary, after the agents find incongruous tissue damage on the bodies. Mulder leaves in order to track down his informant. As it turns out, Kurtzweil is wanted by the police. Although he looks like a crackpot, the doctor claims the information he has makes him a target. He spins a story about aliens, the government and an engineered plague. Reenergized, Mulder calls Scully and tries to convince her to meet him in Dallas. The field office there has old bone fragments which originally came from ground zero, where infection occurred. Meanwhile, the sink hole site has been put under quarantine and the project leaders are watching an alien gestating inside of one of the firemen. The doctors decide they're going to test the vaccine they have. Before they have a chance to use it, the alien hatches and goes on a rampage. The scientists seal the cavern and a new playground is erected over the tomb. In London, CSM, WMM and Strunghold (a consortium leader) discuss the new (old) alien mutation and Kurtzweil / Mulder's snooping. Mulder and Scully arrive at the sink hole, just after the fresh grass has been laid. Suspicious, the duo ask some local children a few questions and realize they need to start looking for unmarked tanker trucks. Scully and Mulder then spend the next several hours on the road chasing the vehicles. Eventually, they find a large dome in the middle of a corn field. After a closer look, they find themselves under attack. First from bees (who inhabit the dome) and then by black helicopters. When the helicopters withdrawal, the two agents scurry away. Next morning, a disheveled Scully appears before OPR again. She is trying to make a case concerning the black oil with the ancient bones. A bee ominously crawls out from under her collar. Mulder has gone back to the bar and Kurtzweil. He explains what they found. When Kurtzweil gets up to leave, Mulder believes he's been duped again. Kurtzweil insists his life is in danger. Returning to his apartment, Mulder finds a picture which cooberates Kurtzweil's association with Bill Mulder. A dejected Scully arrives and announces that she's being transferred to Salt Lake City. Before that can take effect, she's decided she's going to resign. Mulder pleads with her, and tells her she's kept him honest. Touched, Scully starts to cry. The two share a long look and just as they're about to kiss, Scully is stung by a bee. The reaction to the sting is instantaneous and life threatening. Mulder calls 911. Paramedics bundle Scully off and just as the ambulance is about to leave, Mulder recognizes the driver as a member of the syndicate. The driver shoots him. Scully is placed in cryogenic suspension and loaded onto a plane while CSM looks on. Fortunately, Mulder's wound was superficial and he wakes up in the hospital with Skinner and the Lone Gunmen standing over him. Since he's being watched, Mulder switches places with Byers and uses Frohike and Langley for cover when he leaves the hospital. Running back to the bar, Mulder looks for Kurtzweil, but finds the WMM. The WMM invites him into his limousine and proceeds to explain what the project is all about. Despite orders, the WMM hands Mulder a vaccine against the alien virus and the location of Agent Scully. He kills his driver then trips the car bomb that was meant for him. Forty-eight hours later, Mulder is in Antarctica, looking for Scully with the coordinates the WMM gave him. When Mulder's GPS tells him he's where Scully should be, he sees nothing. Climbing a rise, he spots another dome like building in the distance. Before he can reach the building, the snow gives way and Mulder finds himself in a labyrinth of tunnels. One of them is a vent and it deposits him in a long hallway with multiple pods on either side. Each pod is a receptacle which holds a human, with an alien growing inside. Moving deeper into the cavern a large space opens up, revealing story upon story of cryopods. Below there's movement. Following this slim lead, Mulder climbs down and almost tumbles to his death. At the bottom, Scully's clothes and cross confirm he's on the right path. Checking the current corridor, he finds his partner and starts to use his flashlight to smash the pod's face plate. On the surface, CSM has discovered Mulder's snow cat and has alerted the rest of his team that someone's breached security. Mulder desperately pounds on the cryopod's walls and finally breaks through. Using the vaccine, he injects Scully with a large dose and the ship reacts violently. CSM is monitoring the system and realizes that Mulder has the drug. Equipment begins to go haywire, CSM tells his team to evacuate. Removing Scully from the pod, Mulder dresses her with his extra layers and starts on the way out. Scully is weak and Mulder must carry her most of the way. When they get to the vent, Scully has passed out and he performs CPR on her to keep her going. As they're scrambling, an awakened alien almost catches up with them. Topside, the crackling sound of shearing ice indicate the instability of where they're standing. Using his last bit of energy, Mulder throws Scully's arm over his shoulder and hauls a**. The ship is taking off, and as it rises, the slope becomes more pronounced and the two agents find themselves falling. They land on the snow and Mulder watches in wonder as a flying saucer leaves earth's atmosphere. Drained, he starts to succumb to hypothermia. Scully, moves closer then cradles Mulder in her arms, rocking them both for warmth. Another OPR meeting, and Scully is defending her report on the events that happened in the last few days. AD Cassidy who is running the inquiry insists that there's no evidence, therefore there will be no investigation. Scully produces the bee which stung her and reminds the panel that there's no department qualified to pursue the evidence in hand. On the Capitol Mall, Mulder bemoans the fact that he and Scully are no closer to the truth then when they started. Scully reminds him, that he saved her and they have to keep fighting, because if they don't no one will. In Tunisia, CSM informs Strughold that the FBI has decided to reopen the X-Files.
