So, why do I love Unruhe? What's so special about it? Let me count the ways...
- It's Scullycentric. In case you haven't noticed, I'm a Scullyist. I just adore her. This episode centers on Scully and how she has to empathize with the killer Gerry Schnauz. This isn't something she can do easily. Profiling is Mulder's area of expertize, whereas Scully relates to the victim in most of their cases. This episode shows...
- Character growth. I'm a sucker for these two FBI agents, and anytime I gain some insight to either of their psyches I enjoy the story more. As I mention in point #1, Scully must stretch herself to make herself empathize with Gerry. She doesn't want to, but by doing so, she buys herself enough time for Mulder to rescue her.
- It's written by Vince Gilligan. I think this man is a god. He understands both Mulder and Scully and can write them in such a way as they are true to themselves, BUT they aren't at odds with one another. Yes, it is possible to disagree with someone without being snarky.
-
She brings in the bad guy. As our dynamic duo speak on the phone, Scully makes an intuitive leap that Mr. Schnauz is in fact their man. He makes a break for it, but Scully is too fast with her gun, and he doesn't get away.
- A scary plot. One of the few things that gives me the willies is the thought that I might loose my mind. Along that same vein, I can't think of a more horrible fate (and this includes death) than to be lobotomized. < shudder >
- Scully glasses. Ya- it's cheap and shallow, but I think she looks cute in her specticals.
